Home For The Children

Suzanne Lee:03-77815977.

Children are gifts from God” as a popular saying goes.

They are also compared to plants that need watering and nurture. Most children nowadays are pampered and adored by their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Mothers invest their time and energies ferrying their kids from one tuition session to another.

Yet in the midst of a generation where children are revered and treasured, there are those who border on abandonment and desertion by parents due to death, divorce, broken families or irresponsible lifestyles. Children in such circumstances face the possibility of educational, emotional and physical neglect when there is no family crib to care for them and protect them in their growing years. Due to the lack of strong supervision some kids have experienced mishandling and abuse of sorts.

Friends and neighbours who feared for the well-being of such minors have helped to send them to welfare homes such as Rumah Charis. Some even contribute as sponsors to help alleviate the costs of child rearing, borne by the social organisation. As we may know, providing for the needs of growing children is no easy task – both fi nancially and physically. This includes day-to-day health care, food, schooling, pocket money and transportation.

Due to this, organisations such as Rumah Charis are seeking more public support towards childcare and nurture by introducing a fostering program where contributions by the caring public can ensure the proper running of children homes undertaken by them.

Rumah Charis invites caring individuals or organisations to assist in its child fostering program by contributing to the needs below:1) School and Book Fees – RM 60 per child2) Tuition Fees – RM 120 per child3) Food and Transport – RM 200 per childTotal sponsorship per child will be RM380-00.Please contact Suzanne Lee at 03-77815977 if you are able to assist in the fostering program!

It is important for youths to pick up new skills as they grow to enhance their knowledge and personal development. One of the creative skills is baking. The House of Bread which is link to a social organization offers baking classes at reasonable rates for youths. The training program seeks to endow them with skills for adult working life.

Teaching others to fi sh instead of fi shing for them is about facilitating personal progress and empowerment through skills training. As the young embark on the journey of acquiring skills, it may set them thinking on what they would like to do in life and what to make of their future. It thus leads to personal and vocational development.

Most young people have to religiously breakaway from a lifestyle of loafi ng around - alone or with friends – and the luxury of endless surfi ng hours, to undergo training at House of Bread. For some coming to classes means having to a chance to reevaluate their values in life and adopt new paradigms. Those who have spent hours of gaming in front of computers are now learning to work in teams and with new friends. The students need to adept to the regiment and industry required in the training program which includes instruction on Moral as well as the English language. Other than the hands-on cooking, the theory and concept of hygiene, kitchen management and quality control of food is taught. It is hoped that through these, the students will discover what they can achieve through purposeful industry and realize the need to take responsibility for their own lives.

Mothers who have teens with learning diffi culties have sent them to the House of Bread for training and were delighted to taste the food which their offsprings had prepared for the fi rst time. For them, it was certainly food for the soul to see their children demonstrating new abilities! It goes to show people generally have some capability to learn – the difference lies in the pacing. Everyone learns at a different pace. Some of these special teens agreed that the program has helped them to be more focused and disciplined. When asked if they are helping their mums around in the kitchen now, a few nodded their heads with shy smiles.

Other than special training for youths, the House of Bread also offers baking classes to the general public. Those who would like to experience working in a well-equipped kitchen under a professional trainer can sign up for the monthly Creative Baking Classes which are conducted on Saturday mornings at its kitchen at Taman Yarl, Puchong. Mothers and working adults who have joined the baking classes fi nd the hands-on experiences stimulating and the end products encouraging. It would be true to say that one is never too old or too young to learn.

The Chinese regard learning to be a lifelong affair. They compare the acquiring of skills to acquiring weapons for personal empowerment. Those equipped with more skills are better prepared to face the challenges in life. The pathway to learning lies in those who seek to training. For those are interested to inquire about the courses that House of Bread, please contact Koh at 016-3178778 or 03-77815977 or log on to www.rumahcharis.org.my for details.

Warm Response To Charity Dinner

Rumah Charis organized an “Honoring Your Parents”

Charity Dinner in conjunction with parents day. The dinner provided an opportunity for children to treat their parents as well as contribute to the needy. The project received a warm response from the caring public. Some youths and young adults served as volunteers.

The committee members kicked off the event by letting off some celebration crackers. This was followed by a string of on-stage programmes such as praise dance by a church, song specials by Rev Elaine Teo, other classical songs and dances by guests. The old folks of Rumah Charis sung a Chinese oldie “Mum is the Best on Earth”, whilst RC children performed sign-to-songs. There was also a lucky draw. The evening ended with sale of cookies and dumplings for charity.
