Extremely popular. Thats the only way to say it. During winter its not much to look at perhaps but during the Green Season Niseko View Plaza is one of the busiest places in the area with people coming from far and wide to purchase the finest local vegetables at very reasonable prices. There are, literally, bus tours operating to this place. Aside from vegetables theres a small shop specializing in Nisekos locally manufactured goods, as well as a tourist information centre with details about the area. Theres a few snack shops where you can try locally made German sausage, Chinese dumplings and ice cream. In late autumn the soup gyoza are a must, if theyre not sold out!

Newly constructed, Sun Green Farmers Market opened in July of 2010. A somewhat smaller version of the market place at N iseko V iew Plaza, they showcase produce from local farmers as well as fresh food goods from local producers like bread, jams and other preserved foods. The produce is a little more expensive than at Niseko View Plaza but the quality is good. During summer they frequently have BBQs and ice cream stalls out the front.

A little off the beaten track is Niseko Fromage, located up the road from Milk Kobo on the way to the Hilton. Not as widely known as the Niseko Cheese Factory, the proprietor was originally from Yoichi and moved to Niseko to follow his passion for making cheese. They offer black pepper string cheese, Camembert, and Gouda. My favouri te is the crispy, crunchy cheese chips a must if you ever enjoyed eating the crispy cheese left over in the pan after cooking a good lasagne.

Located nex t to Ju , N isekos we l l - known okonomiyaki restaurant. Probably the most well-known cheese factory in the area, Niseko Cheese Factory makes a wide variety of cheeses and cheese-related products. Mozzarella, stringy Cheddar cheese, Camembert and Gouda. The kids might enjoy a Camembert ice cream on the deck that looks out toward Mount Yotei.

Located on the road to Otaru on the far-side of Kutchan. Sells fresh produce from local independent farmers. They have relatively cheap prices for vegetables like radish and cabbage. In summer they have potato flavoured ice cream.

Whats so special about Niseko? Natures beauty, adventure activities, onsens and fresh food. Whilst many perceive Niseko as being only about winter the reality is that the Green Season is probably the best season to experience all that Niseko has to offer.

Dur ing th i s Green Season i s when Niseko really comes to life. Verdan t v i s tas abound as the forests and fields awake from their long winter sleep. Farmers also

return to their duties of tending fields and crops. Roadside stalls star t popping up alongside most major roads as farmers sell parts of their crops in unmanned honesty stalls. In the Niseko area youll find plenty of cobbed-corn, cabbages, capsicums, radish, potatoes and many things you may not have ever seen before.

In this article we have compiled a guide to some of the best places to get fresh vegetables, fruits and locally made goods whilst youre in the Niseko area. There arent enough pages in the magazine to cover everything; so our team has surveyed the region and come up with our best picks. Read on for more information.

The name of this caf suggests the endless possibilities in life. This is the case for Mamiko-san, the owner of Caf If, whose passion for skiing was so strong that it brought her from Sapporo to Niseko 30 years ago. Niseko was the perfect place to open a caf, as she could enjoy doing what she loves, as well as watch her kids grow up in a natural environment.

Mamiko-sans passion for cooking is also the reason why this caf has stood the test of time. Her pasta dishes and grilled apple with whipped cream are quite simply, heavenly.
