Dear Reader, Welcome to this latest edition of Infosylva. We open this edition with news from the Forest and Landscape Investment Forum (FLIF), which was held in Kigali, Rwanda 16-17 May under the aegis of FAO. At the meeting, experts highlighted findings that show that not only can investing in forest and landscape restoration improve the livelihoods of millions of people, but that it can also help combat desertification and the negative impact of climate change. (In English – FAO’s webstory here) FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific warns that managing forests sustainably, one of the key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), might not be achieved by 2030 unless more drastic measures are taken to contain indiscriminate deforestation. That practice seems to be out of control in many Asian countries and harms the efforts these countries are making to reduce hunger and poverty. (In English) Risk management in agriculture in Caribbean countries needs to integrate a clearer gender focus in protecting small producers who are victims of disasters, as such events can affect men and women producers in different ways. In the Caribbean area, women are reported to be responsible for 43 percent of agricultural production. (In Spanish)
At the 2nd International Conference on Environment, hosted by the Italian national police force the Carabinieri in Rome earlier in May, the manager of the FAO-EU FLEGT Programme illustrated the environmental loss caused by illegal logging. Robert Simpson also pointed out the loss of tax revenues to governments, money which should benefit citizens and forest communities. (In English) New research carried out in the United States maintains that forests around electric power lines seem to enhance the protection of the birds that live in the area. (In French) In the Spanish city of Malaga, 30 experts in communicating forest issues were meeting at the end of May to discuss different techniques put in place and lessons learned in Europe and other regions in relation to disseminating themes related to forests and climate change. Abrimos esta edición con noticias del Foro de Inversión Forestal y para el Paisaje (FLIF por sus siglas en inglés), que se llevó a cabo en Kigali, Ruanda del 16 al 17 de mayo bajo la égida de la FAO. En la reunión, algunos expertos destacaron que no sólo la inversión en la restauración forestal y paisajística puede mejorar las condiciones de vida de millones de personas, sino que también puede ayudar a combatir la desertificación y el impacto negativo del cambio climático. (En inglés – Webstory de la FAO aquí) La Oficina Regional de la FAO para Asia y el Pacífico advirtió que la gestión de los bosques de forma sostenible, uno de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), podría no alcanzarse para el año 2030, a menos que se tomen medidas más drásticas para contener la deforestación indiscriminada. Esa práctica parece estar fuera de control en muchos países asiáticos y perjudica los esfuerzos que se están haciendo en esos países para reducir el hambre y la pobreza. (En inglés) La gestión del riesgo en la agricultura en los países del Caribe necesita integrar un enfoque de género más claro en la protección de los pequeños productores víctimas de
desastres, ya que estos eventos pueden afectar a los productores hombres y mujeres de diferentes maneras. En el área del Caribe, las mujeres son responsables del 43 por ciento de la producción agrícola. (En español) En la 2ª Conferencia Internacional sobre el Medio Ambiente, organizada por la policía nacional italiana Carabinieri en Roma a principios de mayo, el director del Programa FAO-UE FLEGT ilustró la pérdida ambiental causada por la tala ilegal. Nous ouvrons cette édition avec des nouvelles du Forum sur l'investissement dans les forêts et le paysage (FLIF), qui s'est tenu à Kigali, au Rwanda du 16 au 17 mai sous l'égide de la FAO. Lors de la réunion, des experts ont souligné que non seulement les investissements dans la restauration des forêts et du paysage peuvent améliorer les conditions de vie de millions de personnes, mais qu’ils peuvent aussi aider à lutter contre la désertification et l'impact négatif des changements climatiques. Cette pratique semble être hors de contrôle dans de nombreux pays asiatiques et nuit aux efforts que ces pays mettent en œuvre pour réduire la faim et la pauvreté. FAO Forestry announcements Communication, forests and climate change in Europe under discussion FAO forestry newsroom 30/05/17 This annual meeting of the European Forest Communicators Network (FCN), promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), aims to improve the capacity of the forestry sector to communicate its activities and products more effectively.

Philippines forest sector agrees to roadmap to improve forest law enforcement, governance and trade FAO-EU FLEGT Programme News 29/05/17 A broad coalition of Filipino stakeholders is acting to improve forest law enforcement, governance and trade (FLEGT) in the Philippines with support from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations’ FAO-EU FLEGT Programme. At its inaugural meeting, the Technical Working Group on Wood (TWGW) set out a roadmap of FLEGT activities in the Philippines to undertake between 2017-2020 to promote the trade of legally sourced timber and wood products, which will contribute to more transparent and responsible domestic forest industries.

Annonces du Département des Forêts de la FAO Une meilleure maîtrise du commerce informel pourrait stimuler les économies africaines FAO Nouvelles 25/05/17 Selon la nouvelle publication de la FAO «Formalisation du commerce informel en Afrique», le commerce transfrontalier informel - dont les transactions ne respectent pas la législation locale sur les taxes, ainsi que d'autres règles - représente une part importante des emplois en Afrique subsaharienne (entre 20 et 70 pour cent) et le régulariser pourrait stimuler la prospérité tout en améliorant les perspectives d'avenir pour les femmes.
New FAO publications Agroforestry in rice production landscapes in Southeast Asia: a practical manual This publication provides practical information on the status, benefits and techniques related the use of trees outside forests (TOF) in rice production landscapes in Southeast Asia. The manual describes the main rice-based farming systems in Southeast Asia, discusses the potential of agroforestry in enhancing the livelihood of smallholder farmers in rice growing areas in Southeast Asia, and gives an overview of traditional and innovative practices integrating trees in rice-based farms and landscapes. FAO Yearbook of Forest Products 2015 The FAO Yearbook of Forest Products is a compilation of statistical data on basic forest products for all countries and territories of the world. It contains series of annual data on the volume of production and the volume and value of trade in forest products. It includes tables showing direction of trade and average unit values of trade for certain products. Statistical information in the yearbook is based primarily on data provided to the FAO Forestry Department by the countries through questionnaires or official publications. Se presentan datos anuales sobre el volumen de la producción y el volumen y valor del comercio. Se incluyen cuadros que muestran la dirección del comercio y el valor unitario del comercio de algunos productos. Los datos estadísticos se basan sobre todo en la información que los países proporcionan al Departamento Forestal de la FAO a través de cuestionarios o de publicaciones estadísticas oficiales. Nouvelles publications de la FAO FAO annuaire de produits forestiers 2015 L'Annuaire FAO des produits forestiers est un recueil de données statistiques sur les produits forestiers de base pour tous les pays et territoires du monde. Il contient les chiffres annuels concernant le volume de la production ainsi que le volume et la valeur du commerce. Des tableaux relatifs à la direction du commerce, qui montrent des courants commerciaux principaux, y sont inclus ainsi que des tableaux indiquant la valeur unitaire des échanges de certains produits. Les données se basent essentiellement sur des renseignements fournis par les pays en réponse aux questionnaires qui parviennent au Département des forets de la FAO ou à des publications officielles. Lorsque ces renseignements font défaut, la FAO établit des estimations à partir des meilleures informations dont elle dispose. Videos and video-interviews Sustainable establishment and management of Mahogany woodlots on Niue Island This audiovisual manual has been produced to assist the government, forest department, and landowners of Niue and other Pacific Island countries with the establishment and management of mahogany plantations and woodlots. The sustainable timber production will contribute to the income of landowning communities, while reducing utilization pressure on natural forests and ecosystems in protected areas. Edmond Dounias on “wild nutrition” and the role of cultural diversity in food systems – Video-interview Edmond Dounias from the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) shares insights on the management of wild food resources by modern-day foraging societies. Dounias explains the role of cultural diversity in dietary regimes and food habits, and the limits of the wild/domesticated dichotomy. (In French)

--------------------------------------------------- 7º Congreso Forestal Español (7CFE) Del 26 al 30 de junio próximos se celebra en Plasencia (Cáceres, España) el 7º Congreso Forestal Español (7CFE), el evento más importante que organiza la Sociedad Española de Ciencias Forestales (SECF). Cada cuatro años tiene lugar esta cita, el principal foro de encuentro para los profesionales forestales españoles, con el objetivo de presentar los resultados de las investigaciones y experiencias en materia de ciencias y técnicas forestales surgidos entre un Congreso y el siguiente, fomentar el análisis y el debate para encontrar nuevas ideas y propuestas que mejoren la gestión forestal y orientar la política en el sector de manera que converja con los intereses de la sociedad. Esta es una de las razones por la cual el lema elegido para nuestro encuentro de Plasencia es Gestión del monte: servicios ambientales y bioeconomía. Al respecto de novedades relacionadas con herramientas tecnológicas, para este año se ha establecido la modalidad de inscripción ‘En línea’, para poder seguir el Congreso a través de la retransmisión de las comunicaciones desde cualquier lugar del mundo, a través de la web del CFE. La proximidad de Plasencia, la sede este año, a la vecina Portugal ha venido acompañada de la firma de un convenio de colaboración entre la SECF y la Sociedade Portuguesa de Ciências Florestais (SPCF) con el objetivo de fortalecer el sector forestal en la península. Como parte de este acuerdo, una de las visitas de campo del 7CFE se desarrollará por territorio portugués (concretamente, al Parque Natural de la Sierra de San Mamede). Además, la colaboración se hace más patente a través de la participación de un miembro de cada una de las juntas directivas (lusa y española) en el Comité Científico de la organización del Congreso Forestal de cada país. En el caso de Portugal, la SPCF celebrará el VIII Congresso Florestal Nacional en Viana do Castelo del 11 al 14 de octubre de 2017. La presencia de investigadores internacionales no se limita únicamente a la referida colaboración con los investigadores portugueses, sino que en esta séptima edición del Congreso Forestal Nacional se han recibido muchas más aportaciones de profesionales extranjeros. Además, se ha fortalecido la relación con organismos e instituciones como el Instituto Forestal Europeo (EFI), el Instituto Nacional de
Tecnología Agropecuaria de Argentina, (INTA), y diversas universidades de América Latina con las que se ha establecido una colaboración para posibilitar el seguimiento del 7CFE en streaming desde salas en las que se puedan seguir, en tiempo real, las comunicaciones orales, conferencias magistrales y demás actos (inauguración, clausura) que acompañen al 7CFE. Por otro lado, desde la última edición del Congreso Forestal Español (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 2013) la evolución tecnológica ha abierto enormemente las posibilidades de interacción. El Comité Organizador del 7CFE ha decidido aprovechar estos avances y ha creado una aplicación para dispositivos móviles con dos claros objetivos: información e interacción. Con esta app (ya disponible para Android) se da cuenta de las actividades del 7CFE (noticias, programa, videos, etc.), pero además se presentan dos herramientas destacadas: Por un lado, se da acceso al glosario técnico forestal de la SECF con más de 1.200 referencias con su definición y traducción al inglés y, por otro, se ofrece al congresista la oportunidad de subir un video corto explicando la comunicación presentada al 7CFE, que podrá ser visionado antes, durante y después del propio Congreso.
