Peripheral Nervous System

•The spinal nerves comes out of the spine, and the cranial nerves come out of the brain directly.

•There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves

•They are numbered with Roman numerals.

The 12 Pairs of Cranial Nerves

Page 4: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

I. OLFACTORY•Transmit the sense of smell. Outside of the

CNS they are called olfactory nerves, and inside of the CNS they are called the olfactory tract.

Page 5: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

II. OPTIC NERVE•Transmits information from the eye’s retina.

Page 6: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

III Occulomotor Nerve•This controls most of the extrinsic muscles of

the eye (that move the eyeball).

Page 7: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

IV. Trochlear Nerve

•Innervates an extrinsic eye muscle

Page 8: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

V. Trigeminal Nerve•This is the main sensory nerve of the face. It has a

large branch that passes through the foramen ovale of the skull. It has three parts.

Page 9: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

VI: AbducensControls one of the eye muscles (lateral rectus).

Page 10: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

VII Facial Nerve•This innervates the muscles of facial expression.•A person who cannot blink or smile may have

damage to this nerve. •BELL’S PALSY is damage of the facial nerve

causing paralysis on one side.

Page 11: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

VIII. VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR•Transmits hearing and balance. (also called

Auditory nerve)

Page 12: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

IX: GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL•carries information from the head and neck to the

brainstem.

•Information about blood pressure (baroreceptors)

Page 13: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

X Vagus Nerve•(vagrant =

“wanders”) - the only cranial nerve that travels into the abdomen.

•This is the most important cranial nerve because it innervates all of the organs in the thoracic and abdominal cavities

Page 14: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

XI: ACCESSORY NERVE•Enters the skull through foramen magnum and

leaves through the jugular foramen.

•It just supplies the shoulder muscles.

Page 15: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

XII. HYPOGLOSSAL NERVE•Supplies the tongue.

•Damage causes impairment of speech.

Need to know all of the cranial nerves ?

Page 19: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

Do Now 1/30/13

1. What type of numbering is used to identify cranial nerves?

2. Which cranial nerve is considered the most important?

3. If you sever this type of nerve, you will have a speech impediment. Which nerve is this?

4. What is the mnemonic I taught that will help you identify all 12 cranial nerves? Can you make up a different one if you don’t like the current mnemonic?

Page 20: Notes:  9.14, 9.15
Page 21: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

Do Now 2/4/13-2/5/13

1. What parts of the test you took last Thursday/Friday stumped you? Name at least three.

2. What parts of the test was the easiest for you? Name at least three.

Spinal Nerves8 pairs of cervical nerves (C1 - C8)12 pairs of thoracic nerves (T1-T12)5 pairs of lumbar nerves (L1-L5)5 pairs of sacral nerves (S1-S5)1 pair of coccygeal nerves (Co)

31 Total

*Spinal cords ends at the level between the 1st and 2nd lumbar vertebrae *The lumbar, sacral, coccygeal nerves descend from the end of the cord – CAUDA EQUINA (horse’s tail)

Page 25: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

ROOTS

Page 26: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

Each nerve emerges from the spinal cord at points called ROOTS            Dorsal Root Ganglion            Ventral root ganglion

Page 27: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

PLEXUSES

•Main portions of the spinal nerves combine to form complex networks called PLEXUSES

Page 28: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

1.  Cervical Plexuses - neck 2.  Brachial Plexus - shoulders, arms, hands      ulnar, median, radial, axillary nerves  3.  Lumbrosacral Plexuses - pelvic area                 sciatic nerve, femoral nerve

AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

•Sympathetic (fight or flight)

•Parasympathetic (resting)

Page 31: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

9.15 Autonomic Nervous System

Sympathetic - energy, high stress, emergency

Fight or Flight

Parasympathetic - resting, normal

Divisions act antagonistically - one is exhitatory, other inhibits

The sheep brain also has the 12 cranial nerves, but they can be difficult to find

Page 36: Notes:  9.14, 9.15

Do Now 2/6/13

1.  What are the cranial nerves in the mnemonic, On Old Olympus Towering Top, A Fin And German Viewed A Hop?

2. How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?3. What does Cauda Equina mean?  Where

do you find it?
