Chigasaki with Tokyo and Osaka in 1898, which made the journey to the then a small seaside village an easy one. Before long this small town had become one of the most prestigious areas in the Shonan district for holiday homes and villas. Famous people such as Danjyuro Ichikawa, the most influential Kabuki actor, Tetsugoro Yorozu, a painter, and well-known actor Otojiro Kawakami and his wife, Sadayakko, who led the first Theatre Troupe overseas, owned spacious villas and enjoyed balmy sea breezes through the garden pines.

Right after the inauguration of

Tokaido Line, Nankoin 南湖院 , a modern sanatorium, was opened by doctor Koan Takata south-west part of the Chigasaki area in 1899. It was the best sanatorium in Asia, and it is said that most of the medical students of Tokyo made a visit as a graduation requirement. The site had 50,000 tsubo and 158 bedrooms in 4,500 tsubo floor space. Author Kunikida Doppo was one of the many patients, who were mostly from Tokyo, seeking the most advanced medical care.

Chigasaki became a city in 1947 and summer leisure activities remain important. The shop called “Goddess” located only about 20 meters from the shoreline claims to be the first surfboard shop in Japan. Chigasaki is the birthplace of Japanese surfing and for locals like me it’s not rare to see people in wet suits riding bicycles with a surfboard attached with a metal fitting all year around.

On Nov.11 the new commercial complex Shonan CX will open for business in Tsujido adding another modern attraction to this beautiful place, Chigasaki.

Chigasaki is a growing coastal town located midway along the shore of broad Sagami Bay. When you stand on the shore and look from East to West on a clear day, great views of the Miura Peninsula, Enoshima Island, and the offshore reef Eboshi Iwa, not to mention the magnificent Mt. Fuji are all yours.

Dating back to the Edo period, there were 23 villages and they were part of the Tenryo Territory 天領 in Sagami Province controlled directly by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Ooka Echizen who was highly respected as an incorruptible judge during the reign of Tokugawa Yoshimune was from a feudal lord family 領主 here. He became more famous due to a long-running popular TV program. Every year the city holds the Ooka Festival commemorating his accomplishments. People dressed in the style of the Edo period parade through the city representing a Daimyo Procession. We can see the mayor on horseback happily waving his hand followed by a group of Yakko-san clad in special kimono and wigs spinning spears adorned with white fur. It is fun to see many people, including foreigners, in period kimono, mikoshi on sturdy shoulders, children’s music bands and baton twirlers all at the same time.

The Tokugawa Shogunate made a cannon firing range along the seashore. The road once used for conveying cannons大筒 was named Teppo Street 鉄砲通り, and is now one of the popular streets lined with fashionable shops and cozy restaurants.

After the start of the Meiji period, the Tokaido Main Line Railway was built connecting

Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima Products Plaza

岩手・宮城・福島観光物産プラザ Open since August, this shop is doing a brisk business selling various foodstuffs native to three prefectures in the Tohoku region. Located at the far end of Yugyo-dori in Fujisawa, the shop is staffed by four women from Fukushima.

The most popular products include age-kamaboko at 105y per one-piece package. The various types of sembei crackers also sell well. Familiar nambu sembei peanut crackers (370y for package of 5), yaki-imo sembei (136y for package of 2), and octopus sembei (400y per package), are also available. From drinks and snacks to sake and sweets, the stock varies, but there are always unique and attractive products. When we went there most recently, our favorite snack, kabocha sembei (136y for package of 2), was sold out. But as it is one of the things that we ordered specially for the TSP booth at KIF on November 6, we know that a shipment is due soon. Many TSP members heartily recommend this substantial pumpkin cracker, so visit early in order to be able to purchase them.

We spoke with one of the staff members at this antenna shop. “People in Shonan are so warm and considerate,” she commented, “and getting around is so convenient.” Also the response from area residents has been positive, so opening the shop has been a good support for the three Tohoku prefectures. At this time, the shop is scheduled to remain open through March 2012;
