Gold Rose Award       Category Winner

Once again we are delighted that our work with Yorkshire in Bloom has been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society not only presenting the school with a Gold Rose but also declaring Molescroft Primary School the category winner across Yorkshire and the Humber. A huge vote of thanks must go to Mrs. Hemphill for the fabulous lead she gives to this and also to her family who often help her on weekend trips to the garden centre and watering in holiday droughts. R Annual Charity Fund Raising CampaignLast year the children raised a staggering £4028.04Most of you will be familiar with our Annual Charity Fundraising Appeal. This period matches our Citizenship Week and invites the pupils to consider how they may help causes in need. Towards the end of October the children had the opportunity to complete forms in order to organise special events outside teaching hours or perhaps organise a stall. Once again the children have come up with an intriguing variety of shows stalls and activities.

The Pupils’ Charity Appeal is one of the main events in the Molescroft Primary School calendar. Not only does it achieve the obvious aim of charitable giving it succeeds on other fronts too. Firstly the children develop their organisational skills and team work. The standard last year was amazing with pupil teams arranging and presenting an array of shows with self-assured professionalism. Secondly the relationship and bond between pupils and staff develops as the pupils manage to cajole teachers into participating in events …… possibly out of their comfort zone. Thirdly pupil’s talents are displayed and shared and frequently discovered. There are more than a few emotional moments during the fortnight.

I do hope therefore that Parent/Carers will continue to value this very special time in school. The pupils are reminded however that this is not supposed to be a raid on parents’ purses. The pupils themselves are to make a sacrifice here and there from

their pocket money to support the events they wish and can afford to attend. It is certainly not expected that children attend every event.

In response to some parents representations, the period of fundraising has like the last three years been reduced to 7 days and pupils can only organise one event and/or a stall and/or busking.

I have also maintained the reduced number of show slots to just one per day. Consequently the shows selected were not on a first come first appointed basis but those for which the child organisers demonstrated the greatest organisation, ingenuity and planning. Some events are organised at lunchtimes.

Busking will feature from 3:20pm - 3:45pm at the Y2/Y3 entrance.

As before, teachers will support the children but the children will be responsible for their own organisation.

Those wishing to organise a stall or a game such as a lucky dip will be able to do so at a special Charity Fayre on Monday 17th November from 2 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. The hall will be open to Parent/Carers also wishing to support the children’s fund raising efforts.

The full programme of events and activities was published just before the half term holiday. Please note they are not listed on the diary at the end of this letter. The children will nominate the charities to be supported for consideration by the School Council. The grand total and chosen charities will be announced during the final

assembly on Friday 19th December. In addition on this day everyone is invited to come to school in fancy dress and to pay £1 for the privilege.

The first donation to the Charity total was the £86.27 raised from the sale of Harvest produce and soup.

The Pupils’ Charity Fayre will be organised on Monday 17th November 2014

In addition, on Tuesday 2nd December at 6pm there will be a special winners’ concert featuring performances from the children’s various talent shows. Parents/Carers will be most welcome.

School Meals are Excellent Value.

Any Parent/Carer of Grandparent who would like to come to school and enjoy dinner with their children is welcome to do so. Just telephone the office before 10.00 am. on or before the school day* to reserve a meal. Please bring photo I.D. with you. Adult meals cost £3.30. Children’s are £2.30. It is excellent value, and by educating children away from a diet of crisps and processed food we are together building a lifetime of good eating habits and healthy hearts.

DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID, from Nov 3rd no more than £2.30 will be accepted in arrears. Money must be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office.

Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option.

Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at Christmas during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies on the first week in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

Mrs. Jenny Wilson our new admin officer has completed the task of reviewing the school meals payments system. Jenny has made a number of changes which will make the payment system much more responsive. Meanwhile I thank parents/carers for their patience as Jenny waded through the accounts. Any parents still owing money will have now been contacted. From Monday 3rd November the maximum amount allowed in arrears will be £2.30. MEALS WILL NOT BE SERVED IF MORE THAN £2.30 IS OWING. Parents will be contacted and asked to send in a packed lunch.Meanwhile, children in the Foundation Year and KS1 now all receive free meals. Meals for KS2 pupils remain at £2.30 per meal. However to support parents our discount price for 5 meals in one week will be maintained. So if a child takes five consecutive meals within one week i.e. Monday to Friday, the cost for a week’s dinners will be £9.20. I hope this continues to be a help to parents.

If a week has less than five days such as the first week, each meal will cost £2.30 but in weeks of 4 days we will do a special 4 days for £6.90. This includes weeks when we take children out on a visit. In summary, by taking 5 meals in one week, the fifth meal is free (or the fourth in a four day week).Adult meals cost £3.30 with a discount price of £13.20 for 5 meals.

Remembering Mr. Billy SteeleGrandad and MoleWe were all shocked to hear of the death of Mr. Steele in a tragic accident in the summer. Mr. Steele was Grandad of Ellie, Charlie and Sophie DInes and a regular at the school pick up. A collection held at his funeral has been donated to the school which he loved. A further iPad has been purchased and a subscription enabling 80 pupils to be able to access a wonderful new online Maths resource centre. This may be rolled out for all children if the pilot is successful. Obviously I

am very grateful to Mrs. Dines’ family and Mrs. Steele. They have asked me to publish the following:

“These things have been paid for in loving memory of Billy Steele, granddad to Ellie, Charlie and Sophie Dines. Who was a proud granddad who took the time to come to all the school open days with a special love of sports day. He loved everything to do with Molescroft school and his cherished grand children. He always had a smile and a hello for everyone on the playground. May he be forever remembered”. .

Even Grandads become Moles, and as we say “Once a Mole, always a mole” God Bless.

FOOD BANK

On behalf of Harriet Miller, Grace Weerakoon and Katie Percival thank you for the donations specifically collected for the Beverley Food Bank. You will recall that the girls had started a campaign to encourage school Harvest Festivals to collect for the Food Bank. The Girls who are working the scheme as part of their Operation Lifestyle Project visited Manor Nursery in Beverley to receive their collection.

Type One Diabetes Awareness DayShowing solidarity and support for Luke ScaifeThousands of people across the country took part in TypeOnesie last year to raise awareness of World Diabetes Day. Luke Scaife in Year 6 has Type One diabetes and has asked the school to show its support in raising awareness of the condition. On Friday 14th November therefore I have agreed that at 12noon children and indeed staff may change into a Onesie and remain in it for the rest of the day. There is no

fee, no fundraising although it is within our fund raising period, so the children may decide to choose this charity in December. The main aim of the activity is to support Luke and raise awareness. The great news is that research is progressing very well. Last week there was news of a potential break through.

CHARITY WINNERS SHOWTuesday 2nd December at 6pmFollowing the huge success last year, the children who win the various talent shows in the Charity Fundraising fortnight are to perform at a special winners’ concert at 6pm on Tuesday 2nd December in the Hall. This will include all the children who are selected in “The Voice” who will “sing off” to be declared the winner. Tickets will be available to adults and children for £1 each. A booking form will be sent home after the charity fundraising week.

AUTUMN PHOTO COMPETITION

To mark the season of ‘mellow fruitfulness, we are inviting children to send in Autumnal photographs that they have taken. Digital images can be sent to [email protected] The closing date for entries is 17th November 2014. Prizes will be presented to the winners who capture the beauty of the season. This has produced some fabulous images in the past. Children may enter in school time by arrangement with Mrs Hemphill using school iPads.

R Enterprise Day 2014Putting the Curriculum into the real world.November is traditionally the time when at Molescroft we consider the many facets of being a good citizen and place our work in the context of the wider world. There are a number of special events outlined in this newsletter on this theme including the Charity Fund Raising Fortnight, Operation Christmas Child and Remembrance.

Linked to our Citizenship Fortnight on Friday 7th November, Mrs. Grainger with the Team has organised another Young Enterprise Day. This year as always everyone is involved. The programme of activities is shown below. I am sure the children will have much to tell when they finish the event. The children are to experience a day in which the curriculum is clearly linked to the real world and people in the community.

I am grateful to the volunteers who will be helping across the school. Although not a cheap day to organise the value of the event has been immeasurable and the cumulative effect year on year not to be underestimated. I am not aware of any other school, which provides this event every year for all its pupils.

To support the school in funding this initiative, I would be grateful if parent/carers are willing to send just £1 to school on 7th November, it will make a big difference. Thank you all in advance.

On the day itself please put £1 in an envelope marked Enterprise Day.

WHO IS DOING WHAT

Throughout the first fortnight, the Foundation Stage are meeting people who help us with a range of visitors from the emergency services.

Yr 1 are looking at needs and wants, linking up with the Operation Shoebox appeal.

Yr 2 shall be following up on their harvest soup making session, looking at how they could advertise their soup. They will receive advice on product placement and food marketing.

Yr 3 will be creating Molescroft newspapers on the day's events. They will be joined and supported by visitor Paul Smith the photographer for the online magazine HU17. He will support their journalistic development.

Yr 4 are to visit Tescos in the morning with special follow up activities on the return.

Yr 5 are to be treated to a World Trade Game led by specially trained Enterprise volunteers

Yr 6 are having a two day event designing and making products in teams. The top products will be pitched at the finale Dragons' Den assembly. Mr. Mark Campey will support on the

Friday to give his input on enterprise /entrepreneurial endeavours and be a Dragon at the end of the day.

SCHOOL CROSSING PATROLSuper StartI am absolutely delighted that Mr. Platten has agreed to resurrect our School Crossing Patrol and thank him for a great start. I also thank car drivers for not parking on Molescroft Avenue and those with disabled badges for ensuring they park well away so as not to block the view of the crossing. I understand there is a vacancy for the Woodhall Way crossing.

I also would like to thank parents for their cooperation while the building work proceeds. I realise that it is a bit of a squash at the gate in the South Playground, but the reason we do not open the wider access is because it goes directly onto the road and we cannot fit a barrier preventing a child running into the road as it is the Fire Access point.

In addition Mr. Platten is not to open the gate until all children doing PE activities are back in the building.

Countdown to the Friends’ Christmas FayreDonations welcome anytimeOn Sunday 7th December 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m. the ‘Friends’ are hosting the annual Christmas Fayre. This is, as most of you know, the biggest fundraising event of the Friends’ year and, once again are asking for your help to make it another resounding success. There will be lots of old favourites including Santa’s grotto, tombola, chocolate tombola, jam jar tombola, many games and prizes, raffle, refreshments and more craft stalls than ever before.

The ‘Friends’ will be extremely grateful for items for any of the tombola stalls – unwanted gifts, new books and toys, chocolate and soft toys. Filled jam jars (filled with anything you like) for the jam jar tombola are now a firm favourite. Please note sweets in jars must be wrapped. We regret we are unable to accept second hand books, jigsaws, DVDs, CD’s and toys (other than cuddly toys for the teddy tombola).

We will, as ever be grateful if anyone can spare an hour or so on the day to help out on a stall, set up or clear away.

The Friends Association have also asked if the Choir will be willing to provide some festive music at 12.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. A number of games are also being organised. Last year nearly £3000 was raised at this event. The Friends work tirelessly for the school and all our pupils benefit so much from their work.

One of the obvious benefits of the work of the ‘Friends’ is the Adventure Playground, but the Friends have also purchased 84 iPads for the school. These tablets are inspiring our children across the school in their learning. The difference the Friends Association makes to the learning, happiness and wellbeing of your children is immense.

Please note that the Fayre is back on the Sunday this year at the usual start time of 11:00am ... just in time for lunch and we are catering just for you!

This is the ‘Friends’ biggest event of the year. They need your support.

The Friends Association have asked once again if the Choir could perform at 12:30pm and 1:30pm.

The School is paying for the Crossing Patrol, as according to the Local Authority criteria, we do not qualify.

Green MoleIntroducing our Green Team Leaders for 2014/15

Ethan – “We have only one planet to live on, so lets look after it!”Molly – “I care about the world and want to keep our Green Flag flying”Chloe “ I want to help keep our school a green place to be and to look after the wildlife in the conservation area”Olivia – “I want every school to learn about caring for the planet so we can make the world a better place for everyone”Theo – “Being a Green Team Leader makes you think about the recycling waste, saving energy and cutting down on pollution”Francesca – “We all need to think about recycling otherwise the planet will become one big landfill and really damage our environment”Casey – “I care about the planet and the people on it. NOW LIGHT 1000 CHRISTMAS LIGHTSFamily Night available Continuing our tradition there will be a special assembly to welcome the decoration of the Christmas tree and the start of the school’s festive preparations. This will be held on Friday 5th

December at 2.30 p.m. Unfortunately not everyone can attend, however Governors, Staff, Friends Association Committee Members and

Volunteer Helpers are most welcome. The assembly will conclude with the lighting of both our indoor and outdoor trees. The outdoor tree is illuminated by 3000 lights provided by the Parish Centre Committee.

CHRISTMASADVANCE WARNINGIn the diary you will see the dates for the main events in December. I hope this helps working parents who wish to attend school time events.

Parents/Carers of children in Y3 to Y6 are particularly asked to note that the KS2 Festival of Christmas is being held as always at Beverley Minster. This year it is on Monday 15th December at 7 p.m. It is expected that every KS2 child will attend (except for religious reasons). Every class will be preparing items for this event and the choir and recorder players from Y4 to Y6 will perform.

If your child really cannot attend please write a brief note to the class teacher so that teachers can prepare knowing who will be there. It is very disappointing when gaps suddenly appear. I am very grateful to staff for facilitating this annual event on an evening so that Parent/Carers can attend without having to rearrange daytime work commitments. Holding it at the Minster also enables us to welcome everyone to the

celebration regardless of age and without ticket restriction.

CHRISTMAS ART COMPETITIONThe Beverley Lights Committee

Once again the Beverley Lights Committee would like to invite children to take part in their Christmas Art Competition. Prizes will be awarded to the three best pictures and the best twenty runners up. The children are asked to design a star or an angle for the top of the Christmas Tree in any medium on A4 sized paper.

Each picture must have on the back, the child’s 1) Name 2) Age and 3) Address and telephone number.

All entries must be handed in by Saturday 15th November by 12noon at any of the following locations: G. Jack’s, Wednesday Market or Shirley’s, Lairgate or Collections, Angel Square.

Prize winners will be contacted and prizes will be awarded on 30th November when the Beverley Christmas Lights will be turned on.

The Children in Key Stage 1 and the Foundation Year will be presenting their own Christmas Assemblies. The Orchestra will also be hosting a Festival of Christmas Music.

All these events will be ticket only. Booking forms will be issued at the end of November.

A great Christmas Present.

Remembering keeps hopes aliveOpen as normalAs Remembrance Day falls on a Tuesday this year, we shall once again be holding an assembly at the Beverley War Memorial. This will be for Year 4 to Year 6 children. The assembly will commence at approximately 10:35am and will include a minute silence

at 11am. Parents/Carers and members of the public are welcome and often do join us for this event at the Hengate Memorial. Younger children will have their own Remembrance Day Assembly in the school hall led by Mrs. Hakner. Poppies will be available at school daily during the week prior to 11th November.

LOVE IN A SHOEBOXThis is one of the most moving and engaging events in the school year. A simple idea which sends so much love round the world.

Every year the Operation Christmas Child Charity organises the collection of Christmas presents. The gifts are airlifted to children in Eastern Europe and Africa who would otherwise receive no present this year. These presents are prepared in a shoebox. I am inviting again families in Molescroft to be involved in this project. Full details are included in a leaflet to be distributed with this newsletter. It gives details of what can and cannot be sent. We are organising this collection to coincide with our Citizenship Fortnight. The shoeboxes are to be collected from school on Friday 21st November in a special assembly. Last year 440

shoeboxes were sent from Molescroft School, a new record and more boxes than children! It was a truly remarkable sight. Extra leaflets are available from the school office.

One or two parents, were quite rightly concerned two years following newspaper reports of children being forced to ‘sign up for Jesus’ on receipt of a shoebox. I received a categorical guarantee that this never happens with boxes from the UK. This is confirmed on the charity’s UK website. Chris Webb, who has collected from Molescroft for 11 years now has personally supervised the hand out on many occasions. I am convinced of her integrity and her confirmation that children receive the gifts regardless of faith, and background and that through the project, contacts have been made which have saved lives and offered children life enhancing operations.

Operation Christmas Child was a UK charity which grew so popular that it needed a sponsor charity to pay the freight costs or the boxes could not be sent. This is how Samaritan’s Purse became involved. Their CEO in America has expressed views which many of us would be unhappy with. I am however assured that they have no impact or involvement in the UK operation.

A BOX OF LOVE

Operation Christmas Child Leaflets are being sent home with this newsletter.

Additional Leaflets are available from the office. They describe what can and cannot be sent in a shoebox.

Putting a box together could be a nice half term project.

Following a request in the Parent/Carers survey 2014, I publish the advance dates as currently scheduled and remaining for 2014/15.

Please be aware however that the further ahead into the future dates are, there is a chance that events may have to move due to unforseen circumstances.

YEAR 6 BIG SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT AT LONGCROFT

In this first competition of the new season, Molescroft were keen to show off their footballing skills.Their first opposition were old adversaries St Mary’s and this game proved to be so like many others against these close rivals.Defenders Tom Smith and Connor Lindsay kept things tight at the back enabling Mitch Bellotti and Harry Armstrong to put some great passes together. Unfortunately St Mary’s battled for every ball and both teams were evenly matched resulting in a 0-0 draw.Minster came next and in this game Molescroft were definitely in control. Mitch linked well with new European signing Kristian Schraversande in midfield, allowing striker Ethan Jacobsen to hit a shot over the bar. Molescroft had so much of the possession that keeper Luke Scaife did not touch the ball in the whole game. Mitch forced a couple of great saves from the opposition keeper but unfortunately, despite having all the ball Molescroft could not score, another 0-0 draw.Having achieved two draws, Molescroft needed to get a win and they pulled out all the stops in this game. However, in pushing everything forward gaps appeared enabling Tickton to score a goal against the run of play. Molescroft came back with a

vengeance and Ethan hit a cracking left footed shot into the bottom right corner to level the score. Moments later Harry smashed the ball into the top right corner of the net, a superb effort with his right foot giving his team the lead and a much deserved victory, 2-1.Final opposition was Walkington but things did not go according to plan. Molescroft found themselves a goal down early on and had to get a grip on the game. Harrison McGregor, Harry and Mitch were able to keep possession but could not capitalise on it. Eventually Harry made a great run down the left wing and slotted the ball underneath the advancing keeper to level the score, 1-1. Keeper Luke, with Tom and Connor, kept things tight at the back and the score remained a draw.Even though they remained unbeaten, Molescroft were unable to top St Mary’s combined points score of 10 and finished in second place with 7 points. Nevertheless, they had competed well and no doubt will endeavour to score more goals in their next competition .With St Mary’s unable to attend the next round of matches at South Hunsley, Molescroft have been invited to take part in their place, something which the players can look forward to with relish.

Well done boys.

Unbeaten and playing in the next round.

YEAR 5/6GIRLS BEVERLEY SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT AT LONGCROFT

Meeting their first ever competitive opposition, Molescroft girls were understandably a little anxious as to what to expect, but playing in five matches certainly gave them all a chance to shine on the pitch and gain experience from the occasion.

In a close first game against St John’s, Molescroft battled hard for every ball. Defenders Laura Woods and Grace Weerakoon formed a great partnership and played solidly at the back, and Keeper Chloe Wilson pulled off a brilliant fingertip save towards the end to keep the game goalless.

Next opposition were St Mary’s, always tough adversaries and on this occasion they proved to be too strong and experienced for Molescroft. Despite a great save early from Chloe, they were unable to prevent St Mary’s from scoring three goals and winning the game.

Molescroft took on St Nicholas in their third match and were clearly learning from the experience of competing. Both teams fought for the ball with Molescroft often proving to be stronger in the tackles. Great determined play from Liz Hallam, Maddy Stephenson and Katie Percival enabled Molescroft to put together some promising attacking moves and Niamh Stuart surged forward on more than one occasion but was unable to score.

A goal mouth scramble at the other end resulted in St Nicholas getting a lucky goal and winning the game, 1-0.

Leconfield were Molescroft’s next opponents and this once again was a close game.Charlotte Hutt played well in goal supported by Grace and Laura, and Niamh and Millie Cooper chased all over the pitch enabling Molescroft to keep possession for long spells in the game. Olivia West and Maddy tried to link passes together as did all Molescroft’s players but the important goal proved too illusive and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Final opposition was Minster, well known for having a very strong team. With four games under their belts Molescroft put on a brave performance and battled for possession. However, Minster’s experience and strength of passing play showed through and they won the match with four great goals.

On this occasion Minster’s strength proved too much for everyone and they were worthy winners of the trophy with St Mary’s in second place. However, Molescroft can hold their heads high with everyone playing brilliantly and clearly, with more experience, they will no doubt reap the benefits. Fantastic performance girls, all your fans are so proud of you.

BEVERLEY SCHOOLS LEAGUE – YEAR 6 – 16/10/14

In their first outing in this new league, Molescroft paid a visit to St John’s and were keen to get off to a good start. Attacking straight from the whistle, they kept possession and with excellent zippy passing from all the visiting players, Mitch Bellotti scored the opening goal of the game, a superb right foot shot fired into the top corner of St John’s goal. Molescroft scored again moments later, this time Mitch laid the ball off to Harrison McGregor who slotted the ball into the net. This proved to be a fruitful partnership and Harrison repeated the move to score another. Excellent close marking by Katie Percival teamed with accurate passing with Harry Armstrong ensured Molescroft stayed on top and Harrison scored his hat trick to make the score 4-0. Following this and just before half time, Mitch and Harrison laid on a great pass to Ethan Jacobsen who increased his team’s score to 5.

In the second half, St John’s had no answer to Molescroft’s superior skill,

strength and team play and further goals soon came from Tom Smith, Ethan, Harry( a fantastic solo run), Connor Lindsay and another 2 from Harrison. Keeper Luke Scaife came up for a corner late on in the game, having had very few touches of the ball as his team were so dominant in this first game. When nothing came of the corner, he scampered back to his position , determined to play his part and keep a clean sheet. The game ended in a resounding 11-0 win to Molescroft which puts them at the head of the league table after the first round of games.

An excellent performance from all the players who, although the teams were not evenly matched, played the game in a very sporting manner. Well done everyone.
