    Dear Friend,

May the peace and grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ bewith you and thos e you love. With gratitude for your faithful friendship and generous support, I send you

prayerful bless ings for the upcoming civil holiday of Thanksgiving. This day was s et as ide and marked byour nations founding fathers for its citizens to pause togive thanks and praise to God, for the countless

blessings He daily, faithfully gives. How fitting that this day falls on theeve, of the liturgical season of Advent, which the Church gives us t o

prepare for the coming, the glorious Birth of Our Savior, the Son of Godfrom whom all blessings flow, and who gives His very self to us in theEucharist, which in Greek means : Thanksgiving. May our country realizeagain its need for God and trust in Him.

Let us rejoice and together give thanks for God's many blessings t he pas tyear, acknowledging His Presence in our lives in myriad forms, giving usthe st rength, courage and faith to rise to our respective tasks in our dailyliving out o f our personal call to holiness. The Friars give thanks in a

particular way for your sacrificial contributions and unfailing friendship tous and our Mission. Truly, you and your support are the tangiblemanifestation of Gods bless ing to us . Your friends hip and collaborat ionare central to us in being able to carry out and expand our Miss ion inservice to the Church. I want to thank in a special way and pay tribute to our Directors of theBoard of theDominicanFoundation. Wehad a very fruitfulmeeting Nov. 4-5in NY with the

participation of 19of our dedicatedDirector s. I am

profoundlygrateful for their generosity andongoingcommitment tothe work of theFoundation incollaborativesupport o f the Mission of the Province. And I express this gratitude as wellon behalf of each of the Friars of the Province. At the heart of the life of the Province, of course, are vocat ions, with whichGod has s o abundantly bless ed us in recent years. It bears frequentrepeating: there are a record-setting 21 Novices now well into their

Novitiate year, with more than two dozen Student Brothers in advancedstages of formation. Your gifts allow us to offer these men the bes tformation possible, in the Dominican tradition, providing a promising

future for the Province and decades of pastoral care for the People of God.Thank you for your prayers for their perseverance. Earlier this month, seven of our brothers made their Solemn Profession,

having reachedthe "finish line,"as Prior ProvincialFather BrianMulcahy, O.P.said in his homilyduring the Mass.Their "vocationtakes on a

permanent andirrevocable form,as it were, by their SolemnProfess ion asFriars Preachers,as sons of St.Dominic, in a line

of Dominican men and women that stretches back 800 years, and a line thatstretches forward into eternity," he declared. That is the goal for all thewonderful Dominicans in formation. You can watch a video of the liturgyand read the Provincial's entire homily, by clicking here . To be s ure, not only the young enter our Order. This month also saw theSolemn Profession of a man whoalready a reli ioushad entered our

Dear Colleagu e, I hope this finds you well aswe are nearing Thanksgiving.During this holiday, we thankGod for all of His countlessblessings in our lives. Thank you to all those whoparticipated, both in personand via teleconference, in our November 4 thand 5 thBoard meeting in New York. This meeting was held at therecommendation of those whoattended the annual meetingin Washington this pastMarch. There is much workthat goes on in thecommittees throughout theyear, in addition of course tothe work of the staff of theFoundation, and it is helpful tocome together to discussprogress and to plan ahead. One of the highlights of themeeting is always thegathering the night before inwhich we have Mass and ameal together, held this time

at the Dominican parish of St.Josephs in Greenwich Village.

Afterwards, one of the young, newly ordained Friars, Fr.Bruno Shah, O.P. shared withus his very moving vocationstory and a talk on the virtueof Faith. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Iwould like to personally thank,in a special way, each of myfellow Directors on theDominican Foundation Board, for your ongoing efforts andfruitful collaboration - in ways

big and small - of your time, talent and treasure in supportof the mission of the Province. You give of yourself sacrificially in this waybecause of your desire togive back, in gratitude for themany ways in which you andyour loved ones have beenblessed. There are countlessways that you could do thisbut you have chosen theDominican Foundationbecause of your strongCatholic faith and your belief in the mission of preaching

Jesus Christ entrusted in aspecial way to the Order of Preachers through theDominican Charism. I am verygrateful for your witness andcommitment because itinspires and helps me to beable to do the same, to give

Novitiate just shy of 41 having been ordained a priest for 12 years and amember of the Congregation of St. Basil for 16 years! "This act of religious

profession, of religious cons ecration, of self-oblation, is but his heart'sonly fitting respons e to the greatness , the immensity of the love he hascome to know in Christ Jesus his Lord," said Fr. Mulcahy in his homily onthat extraordinary occasion. Of course, from the Novitiate to Solemn Profession is a journey of manystages and years of prayer, study and preparation. One key step for Brothers on the way towards ordination that I'd like to call your attentionto is the critical Ministry of Reader. This milestone was reached by six of our Brothers earlier this fall. Thank you for accompanying our StudentBrothers all along their way.

I hope you all had a chance to see Father Benedict Croell, O.P., VocationsDirector of the Province of St. Joseph, and Fr. Nicanor Austriaco, O.P., aFriar of the Province who is a molecular biologist and professor atProvidence College, discuss our vocations boom on EWTN Live! You cando so now, here . Please also be sure to watch our new vocations video which we have jus tcompleted. This video will be housed on the website and used in

promoting vocat ions. In gratitude for their vocations to the Dominican Order, five former WalshUniversity students will return to their Alma Mater for a special prayer of Thanksgiving. Fr. Chris Saliga, O.P. who is Walshs first full-time Chaplain,is credited with helping students t o see how fulfilling a religious voca tioncan be. The month of November, of course, is also the month of Holy Souls that ismarked by asolemnremembrance of all the dead andthe celebration of the Communionof Saints. Eachyear, on the eveof All Saints' Day,an All Saints Vigildraws hundredsof worshippers tothe DominicanHouse of Studies. Here is aslideshow of thisyears' vigil. Iencourage you to watch and read the reflections of two FriarsFr.Matthew Rzeczkowski, O.P. and Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, O.P.on the DominicanOrder's "s olicitude for its dead," Friars, Sisters and benefactors alike.

The many prayers for those who have gone before serve a three-fold purpose: gratitude for their contributions; a reminder of our mortality; anda way of reconciliation with those with whom our relationships weretroubled in some ways. I also call your attent ion to my own reflections onthe subject, in which I urge all of you to follow the Dominican tradition of keeping deat h close at hand," which is a most fruitful exercise as you willdiscover. It has been said that Dominicans are 'experts in humanity' and this is wellillustrated as concerns bo th the afterlife as well as the thick of life. Thelatter is in evidence in the Friars' many talks and presentations throughoutthe year. Consider the synops is of the talk by Fr. Nicholas Lombardo, O.P.(which was scheduled for a conference at the University of Notre Damethat examined "virtue's contribution to human flourishing") examining"the

phenomenology and structure of boredom." This Friars' words are awelcome antidote to the notion that the Church is out of touch with reallife! Last month, the first of this academic year's Thomistic Study Circles at theDominican House of Studies (DHS) in Washington, D.C. featured a panelof distinguished s peakers reflecting on St. Thomas Aquinasunderstanding of the human soul. In his introduction to the proceedings,Fr. Thomas Joseph White, O.P.

a Professor of Theology at the Pontifical Faculty of the ImmaculateConception at the DHSexplained that "knowledge of the s oul affectsissues as diverse as : the nature of human beings, ethical dignity for theunborn human being, respect for persons in a persistent vegetative state,

the immortality of the self and life after death, mysteries of purgatory, heaven and hell, the human nature of Christ, the dist inct graces of theVirgin Mary, the life of grace in ordinary Christians ," and more. Please note the recognition of our own Providence College in Providence,R.I, by the distinguished journal First Things, as one of the nation's topCatholic schools in te rms of both academic s trength and Catholic identity. There is so much more. Markin the mid-term election in the be innin of

ac . can no an youenough for all that you do. Have a delightfulThanksgiving and let us keepeach other, and the Friars, inprayer. Many Blessings to you andyour family!

    Sincerely in Christ,

    Ray Clark President

the month, Fr. Francis Belanger, O.P., the Promoter of Social Just ice for theProvince of St. Joseph, shrewdly points out referencing Pope BenedictXVI's encyclical Caritas in Veritate that "the Church in political mattersis neither merely liberal nor merely conservative, but simply Catholic." For reflections on Catholic social teaching and its relevance for economic

policy, I highly recommend " The True Wealth of Nations:Catholic Social Thought and Economic Life ," a new book that features acontribution by Fr. Albino Barrera, O.P., a Profess or of Economics andTheology at Providence College. When it comes to Church s ocial teachingin action, don't miss Fr. Belanger's tribute to Nobel Peace Prize-winner Fr.Dominic Pire, O.P., the Belgian Friar, on the centenary of his birth. The Dominican tradition of excellence in intellectual formation is in theservice of human good and the high stakes of ordinary, day-to-day life with

all its challenges and dist ractions. In this interview , Fr. John Corbett, O.P.,who leads the campus ministry on behalf of the Province at DartmouthCollege, reflects on the nature of true happiness as hinging on living a lifeof virtue as defined by the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition. " Eventually, immorality will make you unhappy," he asserts. Last month, Aquinas House, the Catholic Student Center at DartmouthCollege s taffed by our Dominican Friars, also spons ored this talk by Fr.John Vidmar, O.P. on the Christian imagination of J.R.R. Tolkien. Angels anddemons were also t he subject of a wonderful article by Fr. Dominic Legge,O.P. on the Knights of Columbus website Headline Bistro. In this space I cannot poss ibly do full justice to all the riches found on theProvince website be sure to visit it often. Better yet, also sign up toreceive email notification each time we post a new item. Simply submit your email address when prompted upon first visiting the site. I leave you, again, with all the Friars' prayers of thanksgiving for your

bountiful generosity. A Happy Thanksgiving and blessed start to Adventfor you and your loved ones!

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

    Fr. Dominic Izzo, O.P.Director
