The Reconciliation offering supports ministries and programs that address the causes and effects of racial injustice and prejudice in present-day society. Here in the Pacific Northwest, Reconciliation funds have supported local church outreach, such as Yakama Christian Mission, Gomer’s House (a transition home in Portland for people overcoming addictive behaviors). For more information visit their website atwww.reconciliationministry.org. The attachment has additional details regarding the Reconciliation Offering.

On October 17 our Sanctuary will be filled with the sounds of one of the West Coast’s most engaging new music groups, 545 Express, four guys with eclectic musical backgrounds and a passion for a cappella singing. They are fresh off a summer of entertaining audiences on cruise ships in the Mediterranean and Alaska. They are currently on a tour from Seattle to San Diego and look forward to sharing their exciting mix of barbershop, gospel, musical theater and vocal jazz. Their sound will wow your ears and stir your soul.

Bites of Bread from Bob We often hear of the pain of unanswered prayer, but do we ever think about the pain of answered prayer? Most of us have heard various versions of the story of the genie in the bottle that grants its owner three wishes. The usual story line is that the third wish has to be used to correct the problems caused by the first two wishes. If we ask for God's guidance, we should not be surprised if God directs us down a path that we would not choose. It is a little like what Oliver Wendell Holmes said, "When folks ask for our opinion, they really want our praise."

Do you remember the rich young man's question of Jesus? "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" When Jesus tells him to sell what he has and to give it to the poor, he goes away sad. We take a certain risk when we turn to God asking for guidance. God may give us guidance that we may not want. Sensing God's calling upon our life can invade our contented soul.

Too often we are like the person mentioned in the book of James, who looks in the mirror, sees the im-perfections and then walks away and forgets what has been seen. "This is the judgment, that light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light." (John 3:19) If you are sleeping in a

dark room and some-one suddenly turns the light on, the light will hurt our eyes. Eventually our eyes adjust and the light is a great benefit. So it

is when God shows us the path we should be walking. It may be difficult at first, but if we continue to walk with God we will find there is no better way to go.

Condolences Jerry Watson passed away at home surrounded by family on September 25, after a long battle with cancer. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to his wife Diane, his children, grandchildren and the rest of his family. His memorial service was on September 29. Trudy Gregory Bradley passed away on September 28 after being hit by a car. In recent years, she was involved with our region’s Youth Camps. Trudy was the Associate Minister at Portland’s First Congrega-tion Church. Our prayers and sympathies go out to her family.

For Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and YouthFor Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie We are studying the book of Genesis. In chapter 12, we learned that God told Abram to just “Go….” To teach the point of the text, and review what we have learned so far, I decided to take my Sunday School class on a journey across the church. We used our GPS or, ‘God’s Positioning System,’ (aka the Bible) and some clues to help us travel from place to place. Other classes and a worship service were being held at the same time, so I emphasized the need to be ‘Quiet Travelers.’

Thinking it to be the least intrusive route, I chose to take the elevator to the next floor. As we stood read-ing the next clue, suddenly a bell started ringing in the elevator. Quiet Travelers be gone. I ushered them out and pushed every button in an attempt to shut off the annoying sound. That feeble attempt only accomplished making a phone call to an anony-mous voice through the speaker.

The children were rerouted up the stairs. On the way up, one of my Sunday School students commented: “If you had let the door shut, I bet the alarm would have turned off.” Stomping up the stairs with a group of giggling children, I wondered, “How often, when our quiet journeys are interrupted, do we keep ‘pushing random buttons’ in an attempt to stop the mayhem?” God is there no matter what, even when we panic and try everything else first. I am thankful my students are often my teachers.

Flurries from Chris At the beginning of each week the Salem FCC staff gathers to get caught up on what is going on within the life of the church in our various areas. But we also have become intentional about first joining together in a devotional called “Jesus Calling.” Some of our staff have purchased the book while others, like myself, have bought the app for our mobile devices.

Some of the devotionals have been more powerful than others and this past Monday was one of those. Here is what it had to say, “Worship ME Only. I am King of kings and Lord of lords, dwelling in unapproachable Light. I am taking care of you! I am not only committed to caring for you, but I am also absolutely capable of doing so. Rest in Me, My Weary one, for this is a form of worship… Many of My children drive themselves like racehorses. They whip themselves into action, ignoring how exhausted they are. They forget that I am sovereign and that My ways are higher than theirs. Underneath their driven service, they may secretly resent Me as a harsh task-master. Their worship of Me is lukewarm, because I am no longer their First Love. My invitation never changes: Come to Me, all you who are weary, and I will give you rest. Worship Me by resting peacefully in My Presence.”

So often we forget how tired and exhausted we are simply because we have become too busy. When this happens it is our worship and love of God that suffers. When we fill up our lives with activities and commitments that take over our entire lives, we miss out on what God is saying to us in a still small voice as Elijah found at Horeb in 1 Kings 19:12.

Join with me in making time each day to worship God only and recognize that the business of our lives does stand in the way of hearing what God is saying to us each day.

Here at FCC Here at FCC Here at FCC Here at FCC Women’s Spiritual Renewal Retreat October 12-13 Amy Gopp, Director for Week of Compassion, will be the retreat leader at the annual Regional Women’s Retreat at Murray Hills Christian Church.

She plans to reflect on the story of Esther, interpret-ing the story as one that increases the faith and courage of women today. Besides hearing from Amy, women will be able to make mosaic tiles, share in discussion and prayer groups, including our annual book group pick, “Surviving the Applewhites” by Tolan.

All-Church Rummage Sale Bring it on, rummage that is. Your clean, tenderly used items are needed to support the Rummage Sale sponsored by Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF). Mark your calendars for this annual event. The dates for the sale are: November 9, Friday and November 10, Saturday from 9:00 am-3:00 pm each day. Invite your friends, family, and neighbors to this event. Food will be available for sale on both days.

We need your understanding and help. Some items do not sell and we cannot use the following:

• Computers and all computer components • Televisions • Electronics that are out-of-date • Books (Save them for the CWF Book sale in

February) • Clothes hangers • Skis/Golf clubs & bags • Exercise machines • Soiled/broken items • Glass jars other than canning (no mayonnaise/

pickle jars)

Drop your items off in the Fellowship Hall, northeast corner. We can provide a tax receipt if needed, just ask. Please hold all large items until the week of November 5.

Spiritually Speaking - Alzheimer’s Support Group CONGREGATION FAMILY and FRIENDS, please join us on the fourth Wednesday of the month for our Spiritually Speaking Alzheimer’s Dementia Support Group. All of us have been touched by this disease, or will be, within our families, among friends, or within our larger Church family. Come for informa-tion and understanding; come for physical, emotional and spiritual support. Come with questions and con-cerns and leave with answers; tools for caregiving and supporting our loved-ones who are affected by Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.
