Youth Leader Spotlight:
Andrea Arroyo
Images of an American teenager traveling Europe on someone else's dime for 9 months might not match that of local Battle Mountain High School seniorAndrea Arroyo. Arroyo was the fortunate recipient of a 2014 Rotary scholarship to spend her junior year on an acclaimed exchange program. Based out ofVienna, Arroyo had the opportunity to venture beyond Austria to Germany, Hungary, Belgium, France, Spain, Czech Republic, Monoca, Andorra, and
Italy, enabling her to experience a variety of cultures, expand her linguistics, and sample delectable treats.
Service Above SelfRotary International's tagline of Service Above Self rings true through their exchange program. Rotary International commits to an exchange philosophy ofservice to others by broadening perspectives and increasing understanding. Beyond somewhat selfish pursuits many American teens might have of "findingthemselves" and "developing their path" through international travel, Arroyo had the unique opportunity to "live like they do, seeing perspectives andshifting my thinking," as she describes. The rigorous yearlong application and interview process culminated in a joyful celebration for Arroyo, and she feltprivileged to have been assigned to her top choice of location. "As a fan of classical music and the German language, Vienna was an obvious choice," sheexplains.
Andrea Arroyo experienced living with three different host families across her term. When comparing cultures, "Europeans don't seem as friendly and areway more laid back than Americans, and their respect for teachers seems more like a University environment," Arroyo recalls. "I'd walk into a class roomand my classmates address their teachers as 'Mr. Professor', and the teachers seemed to have that mutual respect for students, almost seeing them as thesame level," she continues. INTEGREAT! JOINS ERYCIntroducing Sara Amberg, Interim Director of InteGreat! to the ERYC Team
InteGreat! is a multisector group of thirtythree diverse local organizations, neighborhood leaders, parents, students, and teachers working to create amore effective community system that supports the health and learning of all our children. This collaboration's three strategies provide the necessaryingredients for collective impact: family/youth engagement, information sharing, and quality collaborative relationships. As we examine the needs of ourcommunity, we can begin to then champion true systematic change by tackling glaring disparities:
Nearly 50 percent of households in Eagle County earn less than the selfsufficiency standard: 336 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Half offamilies in the Vail Valley make too little to make ends meet, but too much to qualify for assistance.
Nearly half of the children in Eagle County have foreignborn parents, and twothirds of those families live in poverty.
More than 60 percent of students in Eagle County qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch at four out of five elementary schools. Continue ReadingAbout InteGreat! and Sara Amberg

Early Childhood Partners (ECP) is a community based nonprofit organization founded in 2006. Over the years, ECP has evolved from our initial aim to implement child carequality improvement initiatives to now include services for parents and professionals using a twogeneration approach. Our specialists are highly trained and educatedprofessionals that impact families, children, and child care providers in Eagle County through a variety of evidencebased programs, including the Incredible Years (IY)parenting series, IY Teacher Classroom Management training series, and the children's curriculum, IY Dinosaur School. Additionally, ECP provides support and guidance toboth child care providers and parents when a child is exhibiting a suspected developmental delay, and/or persistent challenging behavior. Early Childhood Partners workstowards a single, paramount goal to improve the quality of early childhood experiences for children and families in Eagle County.
In order to further the two generation model of support that ECP strongly believes in, Early Childhood Partners is currently recruiting participants for the 2016 FamilyLeadership Training Institute (FLTI) which was started in Eagle County 3 years ago. In studies spanning 30 years, FLTI demonstrated efficacy building leadership andengagement with positive results related to child development, health, wellbeing, and family mobility. FLTI utilizes an evidencebased curriculum to build participant's knowledge of child development, leadership, and civics. The FLTIcurriculum consists of 20 (4 hour) sessions that also feature an intensive retreat, DayAtTheCapitol, andcompletion of a community leadership project. FLTI alumni is actively engaged in new FLTI sessions,
with the majority continuing with their civic projects, resulting in a Pyramid effect of change.
Applications are now being taken for the next session of FLTI. Twentyfive participants will be chosen through a selective process which includes anapplication and interview.
