Health Benefits of Red Palm Oil

Copyright 2013 by Virgo Publishing. http://www.naturalproductsinsider.com/ By: Bryan See Posted on: 03/04/2013

Red Palm Oil, the staple oil in the Africa and Asia continents, naturally contains unique phytonutrients that are proven to be beneficial to human health. The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), from which red palm oil is derived contains the phytonutrients tocotrienols (vitamin E), mixed carotenoids, phytosterols, squalene and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Of these, the tocotrienols and carotenoids in particular, are proven to confer health benefits such as potent cardioprotection, neuroprotection and skin nutrition; as mentioned by Dr. Mehmet Oz in his recent TV program, where he called it his most miraculous find in 2013 to address the aging process.

Scientific evidence (more than 700 published papers) have shown tocotrienols together with the phytonutrients from red palm oil contribute to these health benefits.

The two main phytonutrients concentrated from red palm oil and available as commercial extracts in the market are tocotrienols and carotenes complex.  Both full-spectrum palm tocotrienol complex and carotenoids complex , are GRAS (generally recognized as safe) according to Title 21 Code of Federal Regulation for use in foods and drinks, with a “No Objection Letter" from FDA.  In addition, these products are not genetically modified and are vegetarian, kosher and halal certified.

Tocotrienols are members of the vitamin E family. In the body, vitamin E acts as an antioxidant that protects lipid from peroxidation and help quench free radicals. However, there is a difference in antioxidant potency between tocotrienol and its sibling tocopherol. Tocotrienol has been shown to be 40 to 60 times more potent than tocopherol as an antioxidant. Similar to the tocopherols, tocotrienols consist of 4 members: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta isomers.1 Structurally, both tocotrienol and tocopherol possess a chromanol head attached to a carbon side chain. Tocotrienol has three double bonds in its side chain, but tocopherol has a saturated tail. Many studies have suggested that this polyunsaturation in tocotrienols contributes to more potent effects than tocopherols.Learn more about the sustainability of red palm oil in this INSIDER article.

Research shows tocotrienols are beneficial to consumers who want to maintain healthy brain (neuroprotection), blood lipid levels, arterial compliance (by reducing arterial stiffness), liver health, skin nutrition and immune protection.

The deep orange red color of red palm oil is contributed by natural pigments called carotenoids. There are more than 600 different carotenoids known to exist in nature. Carotenoids have long been used as natural food colorants in food and drinks, as well as cosmetics. Red palm oil is a natural plant source of carotenes in terms of retinol (vitamin A) equivalents, providing 7,000 retinol equivalents (RE) per 100 grams. This is about 17 times as much beta-carotene as carrots, in terms of retinol equivalents. Some carotenoids, such as beta-carotene and alpha-carotene, act as precursor of vitamin A. Lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin are carotenoids that do not have vitamin A activity, but possess other health-promoting biological properties. The primary forms of carotenoids in red palm oil are beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, gamma-carotene and lycopene. Palm oil contains the highest alpha-carotene level among all the plant sources.

There are four main commercial sources of carotenoids, namely synthetic beta-carotene, algae’s beta-

Page 3: Odu Ifa Texts 2

carotene, fermentative beta-carotene and palm carotenoids. Synthetic beta-carotene is an artificial colorant containing only a single form of isomer (all trans beta-carotene). Likewise, algae’s and fermentative beta-carotenes predominantly contain a single isomer (more than 96 percent as beta-carotene), which are not true mixed carotenoids complex.

In comparison, palm carotenoids complex is a fruit/food-based natural carotenoid. Natural palm carotenoids complex is extracted from palm fruits via a mild extraction process, which ensures maximum natural preservation of carotenoids. Apart from beta-carotene, palm carotenoids complex contains the highest level of alpha-carotene compared to carotenoids from other sources. It also contains appreciable amount of gamma-carotene and lycopene.

Neuroprotection

Neuroprotection A series of NIH-funded research that spanned longer than  a decade showed tocotrienols (as Tocomin SupraBio®, from Carotech Inc.) support brain health by triggering and increasing blood circulation through collateral arteries to the area of the brain that suffered ischemic stroke.2  In addition, oral supplementation with Tocomin SupraBio® in human subjects showed tocotrienols are well absorbed and distributed to organs and tissues, such as the brain, liver, heart muscle, adipose tissue, blood and skin; reaching levels that more than enough to confer neuroprotection.3

Page 4: Odu Ifa Texts 2

Based on these encouraging and significant results,  a clinical trial named “NUTRITION," which is the acronym for “Natural Tocotrienol Against Ischemic Stroke Event," has been commissioned and is now been carried out at  the Ohio State University Medical Center. NUTRITION will evaluate the effects of orally supplemented natural full spectrum palm tocotrienol complex (as Tocomin SupraBio) on platelet function and blood lipid profile including high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and total cholesterol. Dyslipidemia and hypercoagulable are established risk factors of stroke. This study aims to clarify the potential of full-spectrum palm tocotrienol complex to mitigate these important stroke risks.

Cardioprotection Peer review journals have documented palm tocotrienol complex’s promising hypocholesterolemic properties.4,5

A recent double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial shows that subjects with high blood cholesterol who received Tocomin SupraBio demonstrated significant reduction in total and LDL cholesterol levels within four month of supplementation. Continuous significant reduction was seen on the fifth and sixth month. In contrast, subjects in the placebo group had negligible changes in their total and LDL cholesterol levels compared to baseline.6

High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the major risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and strokes. In a human clinical trial, patients supplemented with palm tocotrienol complex for two months resulted in significant reduction in aortic systolic blood pressure.7

Decreased arterial compliance or increased arterial stiffness is a predictor of cardiovascular events in both normal and diseased human subjects. A randomized controlled clinical trial demonstrated that oral supplementation of Tocomin SupraBio for two months reduced arterial stiffness in healthy adults.8

In a prospective, cross-sectional, population-based study involving a randomly selected population sample of 392 men and women aged 45-65 (The BRUNECK study), the relationship between atherosclerosis (carotid and femoral artery) risk and plasma alpha- and beta-carotene level (mixed carotenoids) was evaluated.9 This study provided evidence that atherosclerosis risk was inversely related to plasma alpha- and beta-carotene levels, indicating a protective role of high levels of carotenes against atherogenesis.

Skin Nutrition

Vitamin E, synthetic or natural, is widely used in the cosmetic/personal care industry. The main reason for the use of vitamin E was for its antioxidant properties in the protection of skin against the onslaught of free radicals or oxidative stress caused by chemical insult and UV rays in our daily atmosphere. Most of the vitamin E used in cosmetic is mainly of the tocopherol form (synthetic and natural forms).

Fueled by the many recent scientific publications on the benefits of tocotrienols in cosmetic application and women's health, the use of tocotrienols has been gaining tremendous attention in the oral and topical cosmetic and personal care industry. Exciting science and research are being conducted on tocotrienol for its superior protection of skin and skin aging compared to tocopherol as well as the skin’s first line of defense against free radicals.

Dr. Nicholas Perricone, dermatologist at the Yale Medical Center, in his New York Times' best-selling book, "The Wrinkle Cure," advocated the use of tocotrienols in cream to promote skin health and prevent skin aging.

The research on tocotrienols in the protection of skin has been fairly new, i.e., less than 15 years. More research is currently being conducted either by companies or universities to understand and evaluate the efficacy of tocotrienols in skin protection and skin nourishment. Scientists believe tocotrienols play a major and important role in the protection of the skin, especially in the prevention of oxidative stress and skin anti-aging and wound-healing.

Liver Health A recent human clinical study completed at The Ohio State Universtiy Medical Center also reported that

Page 5: Odu Ifa Texts 2

end-stage liver patients (those waiting for liver transplantation) supplemented with Tocomin SupraBio resulted in statistically significant protective effects.10 Another group of researcher in Malaysia also reported that taking 200 mg of Tocomin SupraBio twice a day was significantly effective in addressing fatty liver. This study was presented at the Liver Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (ASSLD) in Boston in 2010. Source of Vitamin A Research has shown consumption of red palm oil significantly enhanced vitamin A levels in humans, and it is beneficial in preventing vitamin A deficiency.11  Vitamin A deficiency may lead to blindness, skin disease and weakened immune function.

The human body is able to convert provitamin-A carotenoids (alpha- and beta-carotene) when there is a deficiency, hence it is safer to supplement with carotenes than consuming vitamin A (retinoids) directly. Excessive consumption of retinoids may lead to toxicity with symptoms ranging from mild, such as headache, nausea and dry, itchy skin to severe, such as liver damage.

Natural Food Color

Palm fruit carotenoids are widely used in the fat- and dairy-processing industry to standardize the color of margarine, butter and ghee. They are also widely used as a natural colorant in confectionery and convenience foods; and to replace synthetic colorants in the beverage industry. The trend, especially in Europe, the United States and Japan, is moving toward replacing synthetic with natural colorants.

Potent Antioxidant Carotenoids are potent antioxidants. Professor Lester Packer of the University California Berkeley showed alpha-carotene is a more potent antioxidant than beta-carotene .12

Red palm oil is rich in natural phytonutrients that are important for health. These phytonutrients (ie : tocotrienols and carotenes) are also powerful antioxidants that help maintain the stability of the oil during cooking process and may extend the shelf life of food prepared with red palm oil.

Numerous scientific studies have shown how tocotrienols and carotenoids work in supporting important health conditions, especially in supporting brain and heart health, liver health as well as skin nutrition. However, in all these research, a common and important thread for positive effects has been the naturally-attained full spectrum tocotrienols or carotenoids complex. There have been negative studies for both vitamin E (ie : alpha-tocopherol) and beta-carotene in the past, due to the fact that those studies only used a single form (isomer) of the nutrient. The market is moving towards taking what nature produces – as a wholesome complex of ingredients, naturally found in our diet as opposed to a single ingredient formulation. Therefore, it is important to use what nature produces – as the combination of nutrients naturally found in red palm oil work synergistically to confer the optimum functionality and health benefits.

The Mythical Marriage by Chief FAMA The undisputable fact in the Yoruba religion is that Ifa's messages are universal. Although the messages might be distorted, misconstrued, misrepresented, and/or refashioned to suit the whim of the messenger, Ifa's direct messages are always unbiased. When Ifa speaks, it speaks on the universal essence of the subject matter in clear and concise language. Also, when Ifa makes recommendations, the recommendations are given in clear language particularly if the recommendations are about people. For instance,

Page 7: Odu Ifa Texts 2

when it recommends in Irosun Meji that Ori be propitiated for success in endeavors, the recommendation is unbiased; it is inclusive of all beings that are capable of the knowledge and essence of Ori. The particular verse in reference talks about Ori (destiny) when ori was coming from the spirit world to earth. Ori was told to make ebo for all ire. Ori did.

Ori became a deity that has to be propitiated by all living beings for attainment of destined ire. Even in situations where ire is not ordained, Ori is still propitiated for balance. For evaluation of the Irosun Meji stanza, the chant is printed below:

Alata toro ewon Oduduwa Eni ara ro ni i raro mo Babalawo Ori lo d'Ifa fun Ori Ori nti orun bo waye Won ni ki Ori rubo Ori rubo Ori to waye to l'oun o ni l'owo Osun, mo f'ori mi sun o, Ifa je ki nl'owo lode aye Ori to waye to l'oun o ni l'aya tabi l'oko Osun, mo f'ori mi sun o, Ifa je ki nlaya tabi l'oko lode aye Ori to waye to l'oun o ni l'omo Osun, mo f'ori mi sun o, Ifa je ki nl'omo Ori to waye to l'oun o ni ni ire Osun, mo f'ori mi sun o, Ifa je ki nni ire gbogbo l;ode aye

The mystical chain of Oduduwa Comfort brings multiple wealth Ori's Babalawo divined for Ori When Ori was coming home from the spirit world to earth. Ori was told to make ebo Ori made the ebo. Ori that comes to earth and fails to prosper Osun (adjudicator), I commend my Ori to you Ifa, let me prosper. Ori that comes to earth and fails in relationships (marriage, friendship, etc.) Osun (adjudicator), I commend my Ori to you Ifa, let me prosper in relationships. Ori that comes to earth and will not have children Osun (adjudicator), I commend my Ori to you Ifa, bless me with good children. Ori that comes to earth and will lack ire Osun (adjudicator), I commend my Ori to you Ifa, bless me with all ire.

However, when it comes to some aspects of Ifa messages, some priests' recommendations are different for women. In particular, recommendations as to whether a woman should practice Ifa professionally, more so when it is highly and spiritually ordained, are given differently. The Odus of Eji Ogbe, Iwori Meji, Ofun Meji, Owonrin Sogbe, Ogundatasia, Ose Otura (to mention just a few), that make it unflinchingly imperative for whomever is born by

Page 8: Odu Ifa Texts 2

these Odus. The ignoramus sees it differently. To him, the recommendations must be biased. If the reading is for a man, the recommendation would be that the man must be initiated into Ifa, and that he should practice Ifa. The recommendations would be highly emphasized, too. If the reading is for a woman, the uncompromising emphasis would be that she should be married to a Babalawo. As my Oluwo, Araba ***bemi Ojo Alabi of blessed memory (ki awo rere ma je won ni 'Morere), once pointed out the recommendations should have been the same for both sexes. According to him in a taped interview, Ifa does not discriminate. If a well-versed Babalawo, and other respected Babalawos who have opened up to train women (in the persons of their daughters), believe that the knowledge of Ifa is universally indiscriminate, it is time then to let the words of Orunmila flow freely to the spiritually hungry souls who beg for the freedom to feed their spiritual hunger. It is not ideal to tell a woman that the only way she can communicate effectively with Ifa is if she marries a Babalawo, more so if such a woman is born by an Odu Ifa that would have compelled a man to become a full-fledged Babalawo. Agreeably, in all disciplines of life which includes all other religions of the world, there are fake practitioners. Ifa is definitely no exception to the infiltration of the untrained. Fortunately, Ifa has its control of that in place. Concentrating on the exclusion of women, while the untrained man thrive without caution and are even given free-will to preach their biased opinion under the cloak of priesthood, is a situation that need reexamination. Just as it is important for anyone who aspires to represent Orunmila as a priest to be well trained, it is equally important for any woman who aspires to speak the language of Ifa to be well groomed, trained, and versed in Ifa practice.

The messages that compel a woman to marry a Babalawo, which is more or less a mythical marriage, should be expanded to include the advantage of a choice. Let the woman know that she has the choice to either marry a Babalawo or sefa (to receive on hand of Ifa, "mano de Orunmila") and even t'efa (be initiated into Ifa "iniciacion de Ifa") when that recommendation is the ultimate. It is time to do away with reticence; let Ifa messages reign supreme. Osun's position among the deities is a testimony to Ifa's liberalization of the Yoruba religion. Odu, known as Olofin in the diaspora and the most revered aspect of Ifa initiation (actually initiation within initiation), is another crucial example of Ifa's acceptance, respect and reverence of women in the religion. Praise be to Orunmila, Ogun, Esu, Obatala and all the deities of the Yoruba Religion. Praise be to Aje and Aje, Osun, Odu and all the revered mothers of the religion. May all the positive forces join together to make the world peaceful for their children, devotees, priestesses and priests, ase.

Chief FAMA was born in 1953 to an Ogun worshipping family at Emure Ile, a village revered for the spiritual prowess of its citizens. In 1984 she became

actively involved with Ifa. In November of 1988 she was initiated into Ifa by Chief '***bemi Ojo Alabi, late Araba of Ayetoro town, Egbado, and the Oluwo (High Priest) of Ogun State, Nigeria. Osama Bin Laden and IfaFrom Owonrin SogbeBy Chief FAMAA be obì, a yo ìkòkòA gé omo l’owo, a yo ikeA difa fún olóbìA bù fún oníke…English TranslationWe cut an obi abata (kolanut tree); we removed a clay pot[In order to remove a clay pot, an obi abata tree was cut down] ---aggressionWe chopped off a child’s wrist; we removed a bracelet[In order to remove a bracelet, a child’s wrist was chopped off]—retributive justiceIfa was cast for the owner of obì àbàtà tree (a victim) The same Odu Ifa was cast for the father of the child (the aggressor)This verse of Owonrin S’Ogbe continues with its messages.Life is a teacher by Odumare’s design. By the same design, astute students of life are daily bombarded with abundant lessons from life’s experiences. For students and practitioners of Ifa, however, Ifa is forever current in the application of its messages to human conditions. A case in point is the worldly affair of terrorism and Osama Bin Laden. In the above verse of Odu Ifa Owonrin Sogbe, Ifa discourages antagonism and aggression. At the same time, the same Odu Ifa Owonrin Sogbe encourages retributive justice. This dual message from the same Odu Ifa is an example of the complex nature of Ifa, even though a trained Babalawo is required by Ifa to counsel peace in place of retributive justice. The point is that Ifa denounces aggression, and it also recognizes justified act of revenge. Viewed from this verse of Odu Ifa, the U.S. government’s recent action against Osama Bin Laden (May 1st, 2011) is justified. In this case, The US government’s resolute action of catching an aggressor or aggressors, and closing a chapter on an act of aggression—one of the finest qualities of good governance—is highly commendable. Hopefully, this “closed chapter on the person of Osama Bin Laden” will signify the beginning of a much needed peace in our world, ASE.

A parable in Owonrin-Ogbe says:O se miMo se sanAdie da mi loogun nuMo foo leyin

Page 10: Odu Ifa Texts 2

Igba oro ii foOsuwon oro o ya boro boroIgba ti a ba fi win oka Laa fii san anA d'Ifa fun Owonrin Ti n lo ree so iyun mo omo Ogbe lorun ...Iduro gba kokoNi iduro gba ide

TransliterationYou slight meI avengeA hen spilled my medicineI broke her eggsThe calabash of assault will not breakThe bowl used to borrow cornIs the one that should be used in repaying itThe divination for OwonrinThat will place a necklace on Ogbe's daughter

NarrationOwonrin borrowed an old bottomless pot from Ogbe to protect his young cherry plant from rampaging goats. When Ogbe wanted his pot returned it could no longer be removed unless the grown cherry tree is cut. Owonrin offered to purchase a new pot as replacement, but Ogbe would not accept anything different from his old pot. The tree was hewed and the pot returned.Years later, Ogbe borrowed an expensive jewellery from Owonrin to adorn his daughter's neck. When Ogbe's daughter was to be married off, Owonrin came for his jewellery. He too would not allow his necklace to be cut. The lady had to be beheaded for the necklace to come off the neck.

The import of the parable is that what you do not want from others do not do it to them. It should not be misunderstood; the parable does not encourage payback in bad coins. Rather, it is meant to discourage the sowing of bad seeds. Remember the echo and the mirror image are reflections of nature. If you want understanding and respect, show understanding and respect to others.

Prayer:May the wisdom of Olodumare as contained in Ifa and championed by Orunmila, guide us to always sow the appropriate seeds for our desired harvest. Ase!Bifatife

People from all spiritual families should try to exercise the example of orunmila in their life to overcome the challenges they are confronted with and thus walk in the path of light, glory and mercy. Be diligent in performing the needed sacrifice, rituals and initiation and observe the importance of fasting and exercising self control and discipline. Doing this you will enable yourself to tear down the obstacles that rise as blockages for our joy and happiness. To strengthen the divine power within so we can generate strength to embrace good fortune and expand our spiritual wisdom so we can conquer our obstacles we can use the following aladura from the odu ogbe-otura.

Odu Toyale: Otura Ogbe  IRE OWO (Money)

Give praise to Olodumare, IFA, Ori and Eegun (The Male Ancestors)

Otura Ogbe: the Prince of Peace. This Odu ordains a blessing that results from the unity and harmony of all people. Beware that in your efforts to be fair and equal, you don’t tip the scales too far left or right. Curses. Avoid believing the ends justify the means. The best cure for what ails you is to open your heart to others, so that others might open theirs to you.IFA says you will have the opportunity to have all good things in your life this year, but only if you make offerings to the male Egungun of your family.IFA wishes you well and prays for you. IFA says you need to make offerings to an Ancestral deity in your lineage in order for you to become rich. You should also light two candles (lamp of wealth) at your front and back entrances; good things will enter in your house.IFA says you are open minded but people are forming evil thoughts on you. You need to perform offerings in order to overcome them. Be kind do not do evil.IFA says that you are lacking self-confidence because you have suffered losses. With offerings to the male Eegun the losses will turn into winnings and self confidence again.

Page 17: Odu Ifa Texts 2

IFA says that if you feel that your life is passing you by and you feel worthless, that by doing offerings to the male Egungun that you will become great this year.

COMMENTARIES:The person should make sacrifice to the ancestral deity in their clan for him to become rich.Burn two clay pot lamps at the front and back entrances of the house, so good will enter. You are an open minded person but people are forming evil thoughts on you. Make ebó to win.Speaks about a person raised in some sort of covenant.Avoid looking in the mirror because you might see death.

Oshun and Oya fall into the river while fighting for the love of Shango.

Speaking: Orunmila, Eshu, Eegun, Oshun, Shango, Ori, Oya.   An Awo had the secret of talking to Olokun in person, but because he confided in his brother and told him this secret, Olokun took away the ashe.

Break up of marriage through Eshu because the head refuses to make ebo. Shango went to consult with Ifa, Ifa marked ebo for Shango, but he refused to complete it because he believed he was stronger than anything. A few days after, he married Oya. He became very ill and died.

It is forbidden to pass spirits (become mounted) with this Odu because Otura Oriko sat in front of the house of iku and watched all the moves that iku made.  He learned how to revive those who were in line for death to take away; he knew so much that iku had to make a pact with him.  Since that day, Otura Oriko has not spoken to the dead.

Ifa says do not be conceited and remember the Orisha.  When you have money, do not spend it on alcohol. You do not trust someone you know. Money is your downfall. This Odu talks about two women who are fighting over one man. Do not show anyone anything because it will be your downfall. Do not do any favors because they would not thank you for it. There is someone in your house who walks around showing his belly. You have to do what you are told. If not, you will pay for it. Feed your head now and again. If you do what Ifa tells you to do, you will live a very long life. Love Eshu a lot because he can give you everything or take it away, even your life. Ifa says respect the daughters of Oya and Oshun. There is someone in your house who is pregnant. She will have a baby boy and this baby will be the son of Orunmila. Someone is going to send for you for something good. You had money but today, you do not even have anything to eat. Give thanks to Shango. Feed your father if he is dead so that he can give you luck. If you do not do this, you will go to where he is. If you have Palo Mayombe,be careful. Do not eat alligator. Do not eat anything that is given to you or that they bring to you for seven days.

Ifa says do not spend your time wishing for money because they will end up using it for your funeral.  Do not argue stubbornly.  Do not take a bath in the river.  Be careful of betrayal; they may poison you.  Be obedient with your elders so that you can live in happiness. Give two coconuts to your head. There are three blessings coming your way. You left your house looking for money and ran into three of your lovers. Grab onto your guardian Orisha so that you can find money and happiness. Always wear an apron. If you see anyone turning away a lottery ticket,

Page 18: Odu Ifa Texts 2

make sure you buy it. Take care of your child so that he/she does not get sick. The day you cook food for the Orisha, you should not work. You do not have anymore children because God is angry with you.

Ifa says give thanks to Iyalode and Orunmila.  Also, give thanks to your ori because all evil things want to attack you, but your ori would not allow it.  "ori ko," your ori says "No."  When you win the lottery or come into some money, buy a bottle of oti and food for the Orisha. It will rain on that day. So,try not to get wet until after you have received the three blessings. Be happy with what you have.  Cover up all the holes that are in your house so that your luck does not escape through them. You have something pending with Eegun. Buy your wife a dress with ovals and an apron so that she always wears it. Ifa says this Odu prohibits the spiritist to speak with the dead. Throw three little splashes of brandy at your door. Odu of loneliness.

History   There was an Awo who was very intelligent. He was the only one that Olokun had given the knowledge and the ashe of feeding her in the deepest parts of the ocean. The Awo got on a white bull and rode off to the sea. Once he had arrived, he began to pray to Olokun to part the waters. Olokun did so, and he entered the sea to feed her. Olokun would thank him with money and jewels.

One day, his brother asked him why every time  he went to the sea, he would return with money and jewels. He trusted his brother and did not believe that he would betray him. He told him how he would go and feed Olokun. He even told him the secret prayer that he would recite so that Olokun could identify him. After a few days had passed, his brother wanted to test what his brother had told him. So, he went to the sea and recited the secret prayer. The water parted so that he could enter. After awhile of walking along the path to get to Olokun, Olokun noticed that the person approaching her was not the Awo that she had given this power to. She threw him out of the sea.

A couple of weeks later, the Awo went to the sea like he had always done and recited the prayer. After he was done, the waters did not part. He tried it again but nothing happened. A messenger sent by Olokun emerged from the water and told the Awo that because he had told the secret to someone else, Olokun had taken away his ashe. If he ever wanted to feed Olokun again,he would have to do it from the outside because he would never again be allowed in Olokun's house. The Awo then understood that his brother had betrayed him and that he had betrayed olokun by telling the secret. The Awo then returned to his home and never told his secrets to anyone ever again._______________________________________________________________________________________________________

One day Shango, went to consult Ifa because he wanted to marry Oya. He also wanted to know if his marriage to Oya was going to benefit him. Ifa told him to make ebo so that the marriage would be full of happiness and he could enjoy it for a very long time. He also had to make ebo because there were a lot of entities with diabolical plans that would try to tear the relationship. Because they were in love with her, so that they would not come after him out of anger and

Page 19: Odu Ifa Texts 2

jealousy. Shango told Ifa that he was not afraid of anything, and that he could defeat any one of them in a war. He also told Ifa that he would show him how he could destroy them. He refused to make ebo and married Oya. After some time had passed, Eshu went to Ifa to ask if Shango had made ebo. When Ifa told him "No," Eshu immediately sent sickness and death to Shango and he died.

The Odu’s Admonitions on Behavior

The Earth rots but it does not die. Don’t take food out of the fire until it’s done. The working man is rarely suffers from want. He who has two arms and does not work is the father of idleness.

Page 22: Odu Ifa Texts 2

The capacity of the intelligent person is the sword that conquers his goals. Strength is found in union. An arrow does not kill an idea. The crab builds his house but does not have time to put a roof on it. The turtle plants beans but has no time to harvest them. A knife is headed for your neck. You should give before your receive.

Our Commission is grateful to the great systems of communication that make possible that these Predictions reach every Corner of the World.
