hat’s in a name?” Juliet famously asked
her star-crossed lover, romeo. Well a name may in
fact be everything that included a dream, a vision and a mission for
two caring parents being the late reverend daan du Toit and his wife alta du Toit.
The dream was alta du Toit who was born on the 4th september 1954, and two years later diagnosed with down’s syndrome. soon they had a vision for facilities were people with intellectual disabilities could go to school. Thereafter as alta, and her friends grew older the need for an aftercare Centre came to the fore.
Today their mission and ours after 35 years, the alta du Toit aftercare Centre still serves persons with intellectual disabilities through a comprehensive program which provides safe care and optimal development so they can be part of the community and remain part of their families.
it’s their legacy that inspires me personally and the privilege to honour their vision and mission. Throughout this publication you the reader will sense the golden thread of dedication, loyalty and commitment from all stakeholders involved with alta du Toit aftercare Centre.
To all our stakeholders, you have excelled in your support to us, we thank you! enjoy the moment in our world, a journey that we proudly share with you.

Wanneer as ons maar net dink aan die huidige ekonomiese klimaat, hoë werkloosheid syfer, dan is dit met groot dankbaarheid dat ons erkenning kan gee aan ons eksterne werkverskaffers wat ons hart saak hulle eie gemaak
het en die geleentheid aangegryp om ’n verskil te kan maak aan die ontwikkeling van vaardighede vir ons intellektuele gestremdes.
ses besigheide verskaf tans werk aan vyftien van ons kliënte. Wilson & maclagan was een van ons eerste werkverskaffers en so het later bygekom Wonderland educare, itz van allez, browns fudge, pick & pay boston en Cyclon.
ons kliënte is baie gelukkig in hulle werk en bied dit aan hulle ’n groter mate van onafhanklikheid met die inkomste wat hulle tans verdien.
so het ons dan ook vir annette de Kock wat al agtien jaar ’n inwoner is by alta du Toit Nasorgsentrum. sy is die vriendelike stem agter ons skakelbord al vir die laaste twee jaar en het bewys dat gestremdes nog steeds ’n bydrae kan lewer in die normale arbeidsmag.
Ons groep geniet ons buite werk vreeslik baie.
a comprehensive approach
Coordination of care encompasses a comprehensive approach to provide the right care for the right reason, by the right people and at the right time. This is the most important service that megan rustin and her team of 26 personal carers, plus 4 hostel matrons provide 24/7. They take pride in making a difference every day.
There are various aspects that must be considered throughout our residential client’s lifespan at alta du Toit aftercare. These being nutrition, physical care, social engagement, but all with a strong focus on own personal space.
The hostel matrons edna, deidre, delia and bettie are part of a strong support network for residents. This network enables them to celebrate victories and offer guidance during challenging times.
at the hair salon with Hanlie Walters as hairdresser, she and her team are the gurus of all the makeovers for our residential clients. Hanlie knows each residential client as well as their preferences to style.
Her dedicated team consists of residential clients that have developed various skills and they have excelled under Hanlie’s guidance. What residential clients have to say. “We are very proud of our hair salon at the centre and we feel pretty when our hair has been done”, says a satisfied client.
The food service have been outsourced to feedem who delivers good quality service and food to our residents and day care clients.

’n Voltydse verpleegspan van vier personeel kan meeste kwinte en kwale behandel. Versorgers by alta du Toit Nasorgsentrum is baie nou betrokke by ons kliënte en kan op ’n daaglikse basis die nodige observering doen sou daar enige mediese toestand ontstaan, wat ookal die aard mag wees. Hierdie gevalle word dan onmiddellik verwys na suster antoinette Horn en haar bekwame span.
om elke dag in liefde teenoor almal op te tree is vir seker nie maklik nie, omdat elke intellektuele gestremde sy eie unieke manier het van dinge doen en sê. Tog is dit moontlik om die liefde te leef. om dit te word!

inwonende kliënte vinnig verouder reël en verrig die verpleegspan ver bo verwagting besondere dienste.
Twee spesiale versorgingseenhede met ‘n totaal van 24 beddens verseker ekstra spesiale dienste wat gelewer word aan inwonende kliënte.
Tussen brille en pille is daar ook oomblikke vol humor, soos die oggend toe een van ons versorgers by ‘n kamer instap waar twee manlike inwoners tuisgaan. Hier vind sy een van hulle in ’n redelike regop sittende posisie. Haar opmerking is ook dadelik “jy lyk amper soos ’n toebroodtjie” waarop sy kamermaat vinnig antwoord – “dit sal lekker wees, met konfyt asseblief”.

service delivery to our clients is part of the integrated model of the department of social development.
myra has recently joined our team after diana le roux resigned. myra evertse has much knowledge and experience in the world sphere of social work and her footprints will soon be visible in the lives of our intellectual disable clients, their families and friends.
facing various challenges to keep our clients part of normal society and to ensure safe, caring and supportive environments remains an on-going task for a social Worker.
Communication plays a major role and we would like to share some listen, learn and caring tips with society which will add value to the lives of people with intellectual disabilities:• ensure you have the person’s
attention, address by name, use eye contact and/or touch.
• When unsure of ability to understand assume competence and then adjust accordingly.
This is more appropriate and respectful than assuming a lack of understanding.
• if uncertain, ask about communication style/techniques, forms of yes or no, use of communication aid.
• Use appropriate; Language, use simple clear words
and short uncomplicated sentences. Visual information, use pictures,
diagrams, signs, gestures and miming.
Tone and volume, use respectful for the person and the situation
• Wait for response, allow person
time to listen, process what you say and respond. don’t rush
• Check understanding in own words, do not simply ask “do you understand?”. remember receptive language may be better than expressive language or vice versa.
• be honest and take responsibility for communication breakdowns e.g. i’m sorry, i’m not understanding what you are telling me. Never pretend to understand!
• Try alternative strategies, is there another way you can think of saying it?
• repeat process if required.

We’ve got what it takessays ona beets, our other partime occupational Therapist. she has contributed a huge amount of her time and expertise to the advantage of our residential and day care clients that work in the workshop. ona beets and Liezel booth form part of a multi-disciplinary team who ensure
occupational therapy, often abbreviated oT, is the use of treatments to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living and work skills of people with a physical, mental or developmental condition.
occupational therapy is a client-centered practice that places a premium on the progress towards the client’s goals. occupational therapy interventions focus on adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the client or family in order to increase participation in and performance of daily activities programmes.
Liezel booth one of our part time occupational therapists is responsible for the daily activities at ‘byenes and Lewenslus’.
that intellectual disabled persons can function effectively on their level of capabilities.
part of the process is regular evaluations, particularly when new clients join our workshop activities. ongoing in-house training is a priority for all staff involved. The interaction between staff and parents plays a vital role to stay ahead of challenges.

to their lives.

13 years ago our centre has been selected by the University of stellenbosch to host occupational students for their practical assignments under our supervision.
We are honoured and very grateful to be part of such a privileged relationship.

gewillige vrywilligers is ons spesiale alta engele wat volhard in ’n saak waarin hulle glo en dat hulle ’n daadwerklike verskil kan maak. god waardeer vrywilligers, sy engele op aarde.
Nogtans wil ons sê, ons waardering is baie groot vir ons vrywilligers en waarvan dit ook ouers van ons gestremdes insluit, elke projek wat julle ondersteun, elke besoek, elke donasie wat ons ontvang en soveel meer, dankie en nogmaals dankie.
ons nooi besighede, individue om deel te raak van hierdie spesiale netwerk van alta engele, dit sal u lewe verryk.

Hierdie aksie dra by tot die ontwikkeling en vaardighede van ons residensiële inwoners en ons dagsorg kliënte.

looming and always well prepared
special olympics is not just another activity for our intellectual disable athletes, it’s a lot more serious than that. in special olympics sports, winning and losing are beside the point. building confidence, skills and fitness through training and competition are the foundation of the special olympics sports experience.
every year some of our athletes participate in the Western province special olympics and they participate in various items such as swimming, athletics, floor hockey and bocce. sports play a critical role in the health and development of all those with intellectual disabilities.
special olympics is raising awareness about the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. Through sports, we showcase the skills and dignity of our athletes. We also bring together communities to see and take part in the transformative power of sports.
We know the odds our athletes must overcome and the barriers they face every single day. We see this at training events and competitions as our athletes push to beat their personal best. Their stories and successes inspire us all.
To all our athletes, remember with each medal, which makes you so proudly bloom, you truly set a high example for all of us year after year.

meeste mense stel elke jaar ’n begroting op en probeer daarby hou. op papier lyk alles baie goed maar kort-kort gebeur daar voorvalle wat meebring dat die goeie verwagtinge
met die begroting net nie bygebring of selfs volgehou kan word nie.
finansiële administrasie is en bly die hartklop van enige organisasie se suksesverhaal, en Nicky mollett en haar span verdien in hierdie verband lof vir hul werk om te verseker dat daar streng volgens badisa se finansiële en bedrogvoorkomings beleid gewerk word.
met ’n bekwame finansiële komitee wat proaktief betrokke is met ’n
werkende begroting kan daar altyd voorkomend gehandel word. elke donasie, bydrae wat ontvang word maak ’n groot verskil aan ons maandelikse begroting en kan daarvan rekenskap gegee word.
