Available from [email protected] 1812 Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin is born, in Keppel Street, Russell Square, London to the French Auguste Charles Pugin, and the English Catherine Welby. 1827 Gothic furniture at Windsor Castle is designed by the fifteen-year old Pugin for George IV. Pugin also works for the royal goldsmith, Rundell, Bridge & Rundell. 1831 Pugin marries Anne Garnett. He works in the theatre in London and designs the sets for a ballet of Kenilworth, the novel by Sir Walter Scott. 1832 Pugin’s first child, Anne, is born. Her mother dies soon afterwards. 1833 Pugin marries his second wife, Louisa Button. She has five children, Edward, Agnes, Cuthbert, Katherine and Mary. 1834 The old Houses of Parliament burn down. Pugin is by now living at Ellington Cottage, Ramsgate, where his son Edward is born. Edward is baptised at St Laurence Church nearby. 1835 Pugin converts to Roman Catholicism. He makes designs, for Charles Barry, and also for James Gillespie Graham, for the competition to build the new Houses of Parliament. He builds his first house, St Marie’s Grange, near Salisbury. 1836 Pugin writes his famous book Contrasts in Salisbury, with illustrations and text wittily satirising contemporary buildings and praising ancient ones. 1837 Pugin becomes Professor of Antiquities at Oscott College in Birmingham and sets up important connections there. He first meets John Hardman, who was to manufacture his designs for metalwork and stained glass. He starts work on the interiors and some of the exterior of Scarisbrick Hall, Lancashire and designs one of his earliest churches, St Mary’s, Derby. By the time of his death he had designed at least a hundred buildings, including at least forty churches, and also, in addition, presbyteries, institutional buildings for religious orders, and interiors and additions for existing sites. 1839 The Catholic Cathedral of St Chad, Birmingham is commenced by Pugin. 1840 Pugin begins work on the magnificent church of St Giles, Cheadle, Staffordshire, for John Talbot, 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, his greatest and wealthiest patron and friend.
