2013 Summary

2013 was a year of increased momentum in investment in scientic research and education by governments in the Asia-Pacic region. In response to this robust growth in funding, more well-trained scientists are migrating or returning to Asia; there is a real sense of optimism and condence in the air. The scientic landscape of the Asia-Pacic

region is rapidly being transformed, and the impact is being felt around the world. These positive factors continue to reshape and increase research productivity in the region, best exemplied by the exponential growth of publications in internationally accredited journals. Echoing this trend, CSHA worked hard in 2013 to capture a wider range of rapid scientic developments in the life sciences. The new meetings we developed this year, for example on metabolism, membrane proteins, infectious diseases and host interactions, epitomize CSHA’s efforts to broaden our program and showcase much new and vital research from around the region.

For us, 2013 not only saw a steady growth in the number of our meetings, but was also a year in which the quality of our conferences went from strength to strength. Among the highlights of 2013, the CSHA optical imaging meeting has evolved into one of the CSHA’s signature meetings and is now a key event in this particular eld: the list of the speakers now include the premier key players actively working at the cutting-edge of molecular and cellular imaging. While all our meetings attract signicant numbers of distinguished and established scientists as speakers, in many ways the real highlights of each program are the outstanding short talks given by promising junior scientists from key labs around the Asia-Pacic region.

Deeply ingrained into Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s

mission is that our CSHA program, while headquartered in Suzhou, should reach out as broadly as possible to benet life scientists throughout the entire Asia-Pacic region. Excitingly, 2013 marked the rst extension of activities outside China. In collaboration with the Japanese Biochemistry Society (JBS) we hosted an independent session at JBS’s 86th annual meeting in Yokohama. This CSHA session in Japan addressed the latest developments in epigenetics, involved an outstanding cast of international scientists from Singapore, Korea, USA, China and Japan, and embodied the same scientic spirit and open discussion as our meetings in Suzhou and Cold Spring Harbor.

Indeed 2013 was a remarkable year for Cold Spring Harbor Asia.

2013 CSHA President’s Essay

Stories can be told in many ways. Good scientic stories usually follow a narrative form typical of a well-rounded tale, with a beginning, in which the scope of the plot unfolds, a middle, in which the narration twists and turns, and an end, when all is revealed. Narrating the story of your scientic discovery through a scientic talk or poster requires care and thought, a good understanding of your audience,

a clear grasp of the logical ow of your material, all best leavened with a little humor.

Cold Spring Harbor meetings are famous for the large number of short talks selected from the openly submitted abstracts, many given by rst-time presenters. The opportunity to learn the latest unpublished work is as much part of the rationale in attending our meetings as is the chance to mix with leading experts. And whether you are offered the opportunity of a keynote talk, a ten minute short talk or a poster, many of the same rules apply to preparing your material. Plan your presentation with care, out of respect for those to whom you will be telling your story. All the more reason to do this, since CSHA audiences are international, with many having travelled a very long way to hear you. Here are a number of points to consider:

Firstly, know your audience. This should inform the extent of introductory material needed and should dictate how much jargon you can use (the less the better!). A broader audience needs more context of why your work is important, and how it ts into the wider picture. A highly specialized audience may need at most one introductory slide or gure, before you go into the details of your research. At all times, try to keep your audience engaged, even when you are in front of hundreds of people, through eye contact, pacing and style.

Don’t overwhelm your audience with too much content. However much work you and your labmates may have done, think carefully about how much material you can present in the allotted time. Make sure you leave enough time for your novel and unpublished work to be showcased, since what you are looking for is feedback and comment on work you plan to publish, not what is already in the public domain.

Plan the timing and pace of your talk, or the layout of your poster, with care. Good organization really helps in navigating through even complex material, and will make your science stand out compared to your competition. Even negative or mixed results can be presented in such a way as to drive the narrative forward. In terms of timing of your presentation, running over by a minute or so is generally accepted, but better still prepare to nish within the allotted time. It is rude to take time away from other presenters, either because you think your work is so important or because you did not plan well. Too many times, I have witnessed a presenter antagonize an audience by not nishing on time, and all that anyone can remember afterwards is that the person overran their time, not the work they presented.

Design your slides or poster to be legible and clear by the entire audience, not just the big shots in the front row, without excess use of transitions or animations, except when these help in conveying a scientic point. Only include data or concepts that you are going to have time to address in your presentation. Large amounts of data on slides that you have no time to cover is confusing, and detracts from your narrative.

Acknowledge the work of others as you go along. Many of your colleagues and collaborators may be in the audience, and they will not appreciate having their contributions unrecognized. You can do this throughout the presentation or at the end, but do not forget to reference the work of others whenever it is appropriate. It can lend heft to your own research and shows that you are able to integrate your work in a broader context. And when handling the discussion after your talk, avoid condescending or patronizing the person asking the question-sometimes it can help to rephrase their question out loud, in case it was missed by some of the audience rst time round.

In summary, my general advice to would-be presenters is that practice makes perfect. Know your slides, practice by presenting the talk or poster out loud to peers, practice at home and practice on your way to the conference. That will ensure you get your message across, and can lead to useful discussion, collaborations or even job offers!

2013, the fourth year of Cold Spring Harbor Asia consisted with 17 conferences (7 spring conferences, 9 fall conferences and 1 oversea session in Japan) and 1 summer course. Many conferences are becoming real series meetings, which keep on repeating every 1 or 2 years, such as the membrane protein meeting, the neuro circuit meeting, etc. About 3000 scientists have joined CSH Asia’s meetings and course. Nobel laureate Dr. Thomas Sudhof attended and delivered his lecture at the Francis Crick Symposium on Neuroscience: the Changing Brain. CSH Asia is glad to have the joint conference again with ISSCR in stem cell biology and achieved a great success. CSH Asia also moved its rst step towards the oversea community and held a special CSHA session at the 86th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Biology.

Our statistics show that there were total 2991 registrants (including 374 free auditing students and 98 representatives fromthe local biotech companies) from 43 countries who have participated in the seventeen meetings and the summer course. In general, female participants took about 40% of the total participants.

In terms of geographic distribution, the top 5 countries/ regions from which we have the most attendees are China (including HK) (1792), USA (503), South Korea (109), Japan (92) and Singapore (60).
