CH4 HISTORYQUEENS PARK HIGH SCHOOL

A ig pull for rowingSTuDENTS had the pleasre of taking part in a rowing masterclass from the Sir Steve

Redgrave Institte at the Qeens Park High School Rowing Clb.

The rowing sessions were part of a tri-school invitation experience to raise the prole

of rowing and its links to tness, and to give students the opportunity to work closely

with expert rowing coaches. Stdents from Blacon High, Hartford High, and Qeens

Park High School were all involved in the days sessions which involved them learning

abot the principles of rowing, actively rowing in single boats and then sharing the

opportnity to row with Sir Steve Redgrave.

It was a very bsy day for all stdents involved, and fortnately the weather was very

kind for the rowers who relished the experiences of being on the water. For some

students this was the rst time that they had rowed, and it was very clear to see the

hge developments they made throghot the day.

At the end of the day Sir Steve Redgrave gave a speech and awarded all stdents with

a certicate for all their efforts. It was great to see the support from members of the

school and parents, and Sir Steve Redgrave kindly took time to answer qestions from

stdents and to sign atographs.

Mr Clbb (Leader of Learning for PE at QPHS) said It has been a very special day

for all the stdents involved. Not only is great to see the stdents inspired by sch a

sporting great like Sir Steve Redgrave, it is clear to see the development and growth in

condence the students have shown throughout the day.

Half the country are presently ighting expanding

waistlines and contracting wallets. Its probably

true to say that most of us are a bit bored of all the

rich Christmassy food and are ready to get back to

basics.

I have to admit that sometimes a plate of egg and

chips does the job nicely but wont keep the cold

out on a bitterly cold January evening. For such an

occasion the Ham Shank comes into its own. Atapproximately 1 per 1Ib it really is a great value

meal for all the family. Todays recipe is Braised

Ham Shank with seasonal root vegetables.

The Ham Shank is cured pork shin, so it has plenty

of lavour and requires long slow cooking. Very

little preparation time is needed but a few hours

gently simmering will produce great results. This

meal is twice as good a value because a second meal

of Pea and Ham Soup can be created in minutes at

minimal cost for the following day or can be frozen

for another time.

Braised Ham Shank

with seasonal root vegetables

Cooking\time: 3 hours Serves 4

Ingredients:

Ham Shank - approximately 2.5 - 3Ib (1.135-1.365kg)

Carrots - 4 medium roughly chopped

Celery Sticks - 2 roughly chopped1 Large Onion roughly chopped

2 Bay Leaves

Cooking Tip: Soaked your Ham Shank in a large

saucepan of cold water for approximately one hour to

remove excess salt.

1. Add your celery, carrot, onion and bay leaves and

Ham Shank to a large saucepan. Cover with water

by 2 inches. Bring to the boil then reduce to a gentle

simmer.2. Cover and cook until the shank is falling of the bone

(approximately 3 hours).

3. After 3 hours gently remove the skin from the

Shank and strip the meat from the bone with a fork.

Serve with new potatoes and steamed cabbage with

plenty of black pepper to taste.

Pea and Ham Soup

The next day any leftovers can be turned into a

delicious and nutritious soup. If you have used up thestock from your irst meal then simply use a vegetable

stock cube.

Add the stock to a large saucepan and then add

500grams of frozen garden peas and a clove of freshly

crushed garlic. Bring this to the boil until the peas are

cooked. Then add all your remaining original meal to

the saucepan and blend in a food processor. Return to

the pan and reheat gently. Serve with plenty of crusty

bread and thick butter. Delicious!
