We are fortunate that the Greater China market continues to brim with talent and opportunities; and whilst this is good news for all of us, the competition for the businesses and for the best people has created the so-called war for talent, which is the ability to identify and retain qualified talent in organisations.

Jebsen’s core purpose is to enrich people’s lives by providing a choice of quality products and services. Our employees work hard every day to realise this vision and, in turn we strive to create an environment where Success Breeds Success — where they can grow and excel, and enjoy a fulfilling career.

To achieve this all of us, our managers, team leaders and colleagues must accept our responsibility to embrace Recognition, one of Jebsen’s core values, not just during special occasions but also on day-to-day basis. Respecting each individual and acknowledging their contribution can be an effective motivator, even more so than financial incentives. There are many ways in which we are doing this, and the results speak for themselves.

Our highly motivated team at Jebsen Consumer is embracing the rapid changes in the retail environment and have embarked on an omni-channel journey that, by 2018, will deliver a personalised experience to every shopper. The seamless integration of online and offline experiences also continues with the opening of the fourth J Select physical store in Hong Kong.

Over at Jebsen Fine Wines, our team members have built a diverse portfolio of premium wines, spirits and sake that was showcased at a five-week event in Ocean Park, Hong Kong. Together with renowned partnering wineries, they have also brought the wine culture to more enthusiasts with a series of engagement activities during the China Food and Drinks Fair (CFDF) in Chengdu. Meanwhile, our Blue Girl Beer team is harnessing the power of collaborations, working with Consumer Business Unit’s Ricoh team to roll out a creative 360-degree beer tower campaign in Hong Kong, and sponsoring legendary singer Jacky Cheung’s sold-out concert tour in Quanzhou.

A collaborative team culture has produced impressive results for Jebsen Motors, which has topped the list of Porsche China dealers for the second consecutive year. To thank its people, an incentive trip to Japan was organised for 18 Gold and Silver certified technicians and their families while top sales consultants were treated to a memorable four days in Inner Mongolia as part of the Porsche China Snow Force event.

Jebsen Industrial applauds its top-performing sales staff through its annual Sales League initiative and this has certainly contributed to the high-performing culture that has led to two major wins for the business unit — the Outstanding Sales Award from renowned

French lensmaker Thales Angenieux and the exclusive rights to represent Phantom® high-speed cameras in China’s cinematic, media and broadcast markets.

At the Group level, a series of employee recognition initiatives are well underway, such as Jebsen Heroes, which is based on the idea that every employee contributes to the Group’s success and is therefore a hero in their own right. We recently

launched the ‘Polish Your Hero Gadget’ campaign, where employees nominated colleagues who strive for excellence on a daily basis. Congratulations to the 115 Jebsen Heroes whose efforts have been recognised by all of us!

I would like to take this opportunity to specifically recognize our motivated and high-performing employees for not only doing their best at work, but also for taking the time and effort to give back to the community. Our CSR activities like Project Morning Star field trips, Life is Art workshops and WWF Run for Change would not have been possible without your participation. Thank you for being an inspiration to others.

Helmuth Hennig Group Managing Director

Accelerating service standards As part of a city-wide expansion, Porsche Centre Hong Kong has opened a cutting-edge Porsche Body & Paint Centre as well as Asia’s first stand-alone Porsche Classic Car Centre (Porsche Classic Partner) in May 2017.

The new Porsche Body & Paint Centre, located in Tuen Mun, is a sprawling complex that is home to Porsche-certified technicians using the latest techniques and advanced equipment to restore Porsche perfection to both body and paintwork. Also located in Tuen Mun is the Porsche Classic Partner Hong Kong. Integrating service, workshop and sales under one roof, it is part of an exclusive worldwide network and is the first such facility to open in China.

According to Mr Grant Smith, General Manager of Porsche Centre Hong Kong and Macau, the facilities underscore an uncompromising commitment to continually elevating its customer services with convenience and peace of mind.

Blue Girl Beer is redefining fun with two new collaborations! Working with Jebsen Consumer, who represents Ricoh, it launched the ‘Hong Kong Blue Girl Beer X Ricoh THETA SC - 360° Share the Moment Tower’ — a creative campaign that had beer lovers taking 360° photos atop the beer tower with the Ricoh Theta spherical camera.

As Hong Kong’s number one imported beer, Blue Girl Beer was also an enthusiastic sponsor of Hong Kong legendary singer Jacky Cheung’s “A Classic Tour!” concert in Quanzhou on April 1. The concert has been hailed as a visual treat, with a four-sided, 360-degree stage for fans to take in the spectacular performances from every angle! With contribution from Park Ng and Tiffany Xiao

Jebsen Automotive Technik participated in Auto Shanghai for the fifth consecutive year.

Automotive Technik

The localisation expert Visitors to Auto Shanghai 2017, a highly regarded automobile industry tradeshow held in April, had the opportunity to experience the difference that Jebsen Automotive Technik is bringing to the industry. The business unit presented solutions from principals Euscher and Christian Bauer but it was the three joint venture brands, Mitec-Jebsen, Jebsen-TCG and MSR-Jebsen, that really drew attention. This is because Jebsen Automotive Technik is known to focus on production joint ventures in China, together in strong partnership with global technology companies.

“We invest in 50:50 joint ventures to establish localisation plants in China, and it is the synergy between two equal partners that allows us to thrive. Our partners from Europe bring the technology while we contribute the managerial know-how and 120 years of business experience in China. This model has proved to be highly successful,” explained Mr Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly, Corporate Development Director, Jebsen Group.

Jebsen Industrial’s Specialty Ingredients & Solutions team put together a tasty and hea l thy menu of innovative products for Food Ingredients China 2017. At the annual tradeshow in March, the business line not only demonstrated its capacity for innovation, but also showcased an in-depth understanding of the needs of its customers and their customers.

Fuel efficiency and emissions continue to be a key challenge for the power industry, especially as China ramps up efforts on greening its industries. For Jebsen Industrial’s Automation & Services Business Line, the annual G-Power tradeshow was the perfect platform to showcase its energy-efficient solutions.

Joining hands with USA’s John Deere, the Jebsen Industrial team showcased diesel engines for generator sets, industrial use and marine applications. Built on John Deere’s 175-year history, the engines have a proven record of emissions reduction, best-in-class fuel economy and rugged durability.

One track to the top Jebsen Motors achieved record sales and swept the Porsche China dealership ranking once again in 2016. Managing Director Mr Joachim Eberlein discusses his strategy for success and what lies on the road ahead.

2016 Nationwide Ranking of Jebsen Motors’ Porsche Centres

No. 1 Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang / Futian

No. 2 Porsche Centre Hong Kong & Macau

No. 5 Porsche Centre Shanghai Minhang

No. 8 Porsche Centre Hangzhou Westlake

No. 9 Porsche Centre Guangzhou

No. 10 Porsche Centre Shanghai Puxi

“To be considered the best out of 80 participating Porsche Centres in Greater China is an achievement made through the efforts and dedication of our team members. We are not only a trusted long-term partner of Porsche, but also one of the largest and the best-performing dealer groups in the region. This result demonstrates the success of our strategic investments in our facilities and our employees, as well as our commitment to the Porsche brand,” said Mr Joachim Eberlein, Managing Director of Jebsen Motors.

Getting in front with a head start The relationship between Jebsen and Porsche began 62 years ago in true visionary fashion when Jebsen introduced the German sports car brand to Hong Kong at a time when the island city had barely 170km of roads. In 2001, Jebsen Motors brought Porsche to Mainland China and, despite the absence of a sports car culture there, sold its first Porsche within two weeks.

Today, Jebsen Motors is one of Porsche’s largest dealer group partners in the world. And while it did have a head start, maintaining its lead and pulling ahead of the competition would take a clear strategy, constant focus, adaptability and hard work.

“Despite the tremendous improvements that we have made in the past years, we will continue to follow our strategy and operational goals that aim to deliver profitability, professionalism and exemplary customer service in the Greater China automotive industry,” said Mr Eberlein.

Jebsen Motors is certainly on track to exceed its 2016 record. In the first quarter of 2017, sales has been strong and the team has already served over 20,000 customers in their after sales operations.

State of the art facilities Continuous investment in facility infrastructure has been critical in helping Jebsen Motors to enhance service delivery to its customers. In recent months alone, it has opened a new Hong Kong Porsche Service Centre in Hung Hom, unveiled a state-of-the-art Body & Paint Centre and Asia’s first standalone Porsche Classic Car Centre in Hong Kong and completed an upgrade of its Porsche After-Sales Service Centre Hangzhou Westlake. Later this year, Jebsen Motors will also open a digital showroom in Guangzhou — the first of its kind in Asia — as well as a City Service Centre in Shenzhen that is inspired by the Le Mans race concept.

Jebsen Motors enjoyed a record year in 2016. It broke its own sales record with a new all-time high of 9,593 units of Porsche cars sold and, for the second consecutive year, clinched top spot in the list of Porsche China dealers — with the prestigious ‘Dealer of the Year 2016’ being awarded to the Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang / Futian. What is equally impressive is that all of the Porsche Centres operated by Jebsen Motors made it into the Top 10 of Porsche China’s dealership ranking — an achievement that only Jebsen Motors can claim.

The Jebsen Motors leadership team proudly attended the Porsche China Dealer Conference 2017 where all Jebsen Motors-operated Porsche Centres were ranked in the country’s top 10.

This investment in infrastructure and facilities is not a goal in itself, but a way of supporting the Jebsen Motors team to better serve customers with comprehensive and convenient services. Premium customer experiences A Porsche car is the same regardless of which dealer it is bought from, but the customer experience can be dramatically different. This is how Jebsen Motors is setting itself apart from the competition — with premium, personalised customer experiences synonymous with the Porsche brand.

And because the customer experience is created by its people, Jebsen Motors does not pinch pennies when it comes to talent development. Last year, it invested over HK$8 million on staff training to ensure that its team maintains the highest levels of professional knowledge and service capabilities. Its 1,000-member strong workforce includes 30 Silver and Gold Certified Porsche Technicians and, just recently, rewarded 18 of them and their families with a fully paid vacation to Okinawa, Japan. Likewise, its best-performing sales consultants enjoy incentives like a four-day driving adventure in Inner Mongolia as part of the Porsche China Snow Force event.

“Our people are the face of our brand. In 2016, in addition to selling 9,593 cars, they also served more than 70,000 after-sales services customers — that’s almost 80,000 opportunities to make a good and lasting impression and that’s how important our people are to us,” said Mr Eberlein.

A commitment to the community In addition to its customers, partners and employees, Jebsen Motors also recognises its duty as a corporate citizen. Its community efforts are diverse — it seeks to encourage Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability among more people through initiatives like sponsoring the 2016 Shenzhen Longgang Half Marathon and encouraging its staff, their families and friends as well as over 100 Porsche car owners to participate. Jebsen Motors also hopes to deepen appreciation of the sports car culture through Team Jebsen, which sees drivers like Yuey Tan and Shanghai’s Cui Yue in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia every year.

As part of the carbon-neutral Jebsen Group, environmental protection is of equal importance to Jebsen Motors, which adopts eco-friendly repair material to ensure that its new Porsche Centres produce minimal carbon emissions. It uses environmentally-friendly water-based paint and electricity-driven paint dryers rather than conventional oil or diesel dryers at its Body & Paint Centres, for example. Its new Porsche Centres are also equipped with advanced green technologies that enable the recycling rainwater, collection of waste gas and use of geothermal heating.

Innovation and the future For Jebsen Motors, innovation will be the accelerator of success. In 2016, about 12% of its sales originated from online channels. Recognising that the Internet+ era has arrived, Jebsen Motors has established dedicated digital and social media teams at each Porsche Centre. The idea is to provide a seamlessly integrated premium customer experience both online and offline, so that customers can connect with the brand whenever and wherever they want to. Mr Eberlein also hinted at the possibility of adopting cutting-edge technology that would enable the live broadcast of new car launches and other high-profile marketing events later this year.

This new technology was recently tested during the annual Jebsen Motors Soccer tournament, where all games were broadcasted live.

We will not stop constantly improving ourselves and our services,” said Mr Eberlein. With this proactive mindset, impressive results in 2016 and exciting plans for 2017, Jebsen Motors is confident about its future in China’s dynamic automotive market.

Jebsen Motors’ Performance Goal: To become the industry benchmark of professionalism, profitability and exemplary customer service

Technology innovation in the Internet+ era

Premium customer experience with a total service approach

Highly qualified professional team including 30 Gold and Silver Certified Porsche Technicians

Well-developed facility network with top-ranked Porsche Centres across China and Hong Kong

While the cause of autism remains unknown, millions of people around the world are affected by it. In China, it is estimated that about 10 million people are autistic, of which, two million of them are children. World Autism Day on April 2 hopes to raise more awareness about the condition — at Jebsen, through its ‘Life is Art’ CSR programme, the Group hopes to help these children and their families on a more regular and sustained basis.

The programme, which runs in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, seeks to offer autistic children’s access to appreciation and application of art. With the support of staff volunteers, special activities such as concerts, exhibitions, workshops will be organised regularly this year. These diverse activities aim at infusing art to their lives, allowing them to express themselves through the collaborative work. Most recently, the young beneficiaries of ‘Life is Art’ put on an inspiring musical performance at Jebsen Group’s Annual Dinners, proving that art can indeed make a difference!

Through its ‘Life is Art’ CSR programme, the Group hopes to help these children and their families on a more regular and sustained basis.

For the ninth consecutive year, the Group has supported Earth Hour, the global movement to turn off non-essential lights for an hour to raise awareness about environmental conservation. On March 25, 2017, façade lights, neon signs, billboards and computers were switched off across all Jebsen offices as well as at its Porsche Centres and J Select stores. But that’s not all!

As one of the founding members and a double-diamond member of WWF Hong Kong, Jebsen actively supports a host of conservation events. It fielded two four-runner teams for Run for Change, WWF-Hong Kong’s charity event to promote a low-carbon lifestyle on February 24; invited colleagues to join a guided visit to WWF-Hong Kong’s Island House on March 18 where there are over 140 identified species of plants, a Nature and Well-Being; Lip Balm DIY Workshop at Island House on April 8; and a guided visit of Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre, the only sea-based marine education centre in Hong Kong, on May 6.

On May 7, Jebsen staff and their families joined the Walk for Water charity event, carrying 4.5 litres of water on their back over a 3km stretch to experience the hardship of villagers in places like Cambodia, China and Nepal and to help raise funds to build water facilities for those in need.

MINDSLeadership Journey

Given the rapidly changing business landscape and the emergence of new and advanced technologies, the Group released a new Confidential Information Policy in April 2017. The updated policy is designed to help its employees understand the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of protecting confidential information.

Group Chief Financial Officer Mr Jeffrey Lai explains: “In our line of business, we produce and are entrusted with a wide range of information, from personal data to trade secrets, processes, formulas and unpublished business information like pricing strategies and marketing tactics. While our people need this information to do their job, unauthorised access and fraudulent use can lead to significant financial and reputational loss.”

At present, access to confidential information is already strictly on a need-to-know basis. The guidelines set out in the Confidential Information Policy are meant to help employees understand what constitutes confidential information, under what situation or process can they access it, and how they should protect it from unauthorised disclosure in their daily work.

“When in doubt, we recommend that employees seek confirmation from Group Finance & Accounts, Business Unit Finance Controllers or Group Legal before disclosing any confidential information to another party, as a confidentiality or non-disclosure agreement may be required,” said Mr Lai.

“We also ask that our employees never ignore a potential ‘red flag’ — an indicator that something might not be right. For instance, the source who provided the information requests us not to disclose his identity. This should be reported immediately. We have processes in place to handle such reports in strict confidence so employees need not worry about retaliation.”

The Confidential Information Policy works hand in hand with the Group’s Code of Ethics and Business Conduct to ensure that its people are equipped to behave in a professional manner at all times. This, according to Mr Lai, has been the cornerstone to the Group’s 120-year success.

“The Jebsen name is trusted by many world-renowned brands like Dyson in the consumer space, Stella Artois in the beer market, Bollinger in the fine wines industry, Porsche in the automotive world and Thales Angenieux in the cinematic and broadcasting industry. We have also worked hard to gain the trust of consumers and companies in Greater China. The Confidential Information Policy is another step that we are taking to safeguard the trust placed in us.”

Confidence from confidentiality Jebsen Group Chief Financial Officer Mr Jeffrey Lai discusses the Group’s new Confidential Information Policy and its role in protecting the business.

In 1996, Bill Gates famously wrote that “content is king”. In 2017, however, data rules. Information, and the insights that come with it, can easily make or break a business. For Jebsen Group, protecting confidential information — not only its own, but that of its customers, partners and principals — is of the highest priority.

Group Chief Financial Officer Mr Jeffrey Lai believes that protecting confidential information is vital to continued business success.

In our line of business, we produce and are entrusted with a wide range of information, from personal data to trade secrets, processes, formulas and unpublished business information like pricing strategies and marketing tactics.”

MINDSPeople Speak

Team Success An inside look at how a collaborative team culture is delivering success for Jebsen Motors in Shenzhen.

Success Breeds Success

In Porsche China’s 2016 nationwide dealership ranking, Jebsen Motors’ Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang & Futian topped the list — climbing eight spots from its 2015 result and became Dealer of the Year, the prestigious award for the best Porsche center in Greater China.

General Manager Mr Victor Zhang believes this is the result of a strong and united team, and is grateful for the opportunity to work with motivated, likeminded professionals. Explaining, he said: “In Shenzhen, we have three locations — a 4S Centre in Longgang as well as a showroom and service centre in Futian. They are about 40km apart. If our team of 180 people did not work collaboratively, I think it would be challenging to ensure that our centres operate smoothly and that our customers consistently receive the best experience.”

“We have an unofficial work philosophy that we call ‘Going Back to Basics’. We believe that if we all do our best in everything, including the smallest details, then results will naturally follow. Every day, we ask ourselves: ‘Are our customers promptly greeted when they step into our showroom? Do we thoroughly understand their needs? Are we recommending the most suitable car for them? Are we treating customers’ cars like we would our own?” he added.

Mr Zhang’s attention to detail has been honed in his career experience with Jebsen Motors. He joined the company as an import coordinator in October 3, 2008 — a date he still clearly remembers as it coincided with Porsche Cayenne’s Mainland China debut. Since then, he has risen through the ranks, first leading Porsche Centre Beijing Goldenport to win the Dealer of the Year 2015 Award before joining Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang & Futian and repeating this achievement.

His daily strive for excellence is shared by every member of the Shenzhen team, including Mr Lai Fuda, who is one of the two Gold Certified Porsche Technicians in Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang & Futian. He is among just 10% of the world’s technicians who have managed to earn this prestigious title.

For over four years, Mr Lai, who started out in Porsche Centre Shenzhen Futian in 2009, shuttled between Shenzhen and Shanghai to train for the certification. In 2015, he was asked to join Porsche Centre Shenzhen Longgang to lead the team.

We play football and basketball together, with an informal competition for each held once a year. Team sports are a great way to encourage our people to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle and, also, to strengthen their team spirit, bonding and sportsmanship — which are all essential values at work and in life,” he shared.

“We now have two Gold, five Silver and 21 Bronze Porsche Certified Technicians in Shenzhen. Having grown with Jebsen Motors myself, I believe it is my responsibility to help my team members in their development journey too,” said Mr Lai.

In addition to his daily work, Mr Lai takes time to mentor others — earning him a reputation for being passionate about his job and patient and generous with his juniors. This team spirit is further enhanced through team sports, shared Mr Zhang.

Each year, the Group hosts a series of media engagement activities to share business updates, major achievements and development prospects with friends of the media in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. The four sessions were attended by a total of 59 media representatives, giving them the opportunity to experience different aspects of the Group’s business. They met Team Jebsen driver Cui Yue in Shanghai, sampled J Taste’s flagship yoghurt concentrate drink in Beijing, learnt more about Blue Girl Beer in Guangzhou and were introduced to Jebsen Fine Wine’s self-owned wine brands in Hong Kong.

Celebrating 2016, looking forward to 2017

A time for togetherness at the Group's Annual Dinners.

In February this year, the Group maintained its tradition of hosting a series of Annual Dinners in appreciation of its colleagues’ hard work. The gatherings in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, together with Group Chairman Mr Hans Michael Jebsen, Group Managing Director Mr Helmuth Hennig, Group Board of Directors and the senior management team, celebrated yet another milestone year in 2016. Important business updates as well as 2017 expectations were also shared with colleagues.

The Annual Dinners were also an occasion to thank long-service colleagues for their dedication and present their children with the Jebsen Scholarship. The highlight of the evenings were the delightful musical performances put together by 26 children and 14 staff volunteers from the Group’s ‘Life is Art’ CSR programme.

Strengthening media relationships

Recently, Group Chairman Mr Hans Michael Jebsen shared his insights on China’s One Belt, One Road initiative with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Noting that the initiative aims to open up the free flow of trade from China, across Asia and into Eastern Europe and Africa, Mr Jebsen spoke about the positive effect that international trade can have on minimising conflict among countries and poverty within them. Drawing from the Group’s own experience as a bridge between East and West, he said: “Engaging with other cultures means that you have to be prepared to listen to new viewpoints and to learn.”

Mr Jebsen also sees the initiative as an indication of China’s willingness to take on more international responsibility: “From being a non-participant on the world stage, to entering the world stage, to being at the center of the world stage, this is a natural progression for China.” With contribution from Angela Wong
