Mbekweni Police spokesperson,Serg Nceba Vanqa, said when policeentered the house at 04:20 last Thurs-day morning, Botes allegedly fired ashot at them. The bullet missed a po-liceman and hit the wall.

Police were able to overpower andarrest him, while his weapon, a Z75Pistol with one magazine and 13rounds, was confiscated and sent forballistic tests.

Upon a further search of the resi-dence, police and laboratory expertsfrom Panorama, who were presentduring the search, found eight 5F can-

nisters of Isopropanol, three 5F

cannisters of Glacial Acetic Acid, twocontainers with unknown brownchemicals, four 2,5F brown Dichloro-methane and one 5F of unknownchemicals, a hot plate, a laboratoryglass bottle, a burner, ten frostclamps, and two small scales.

Although no physical drugs werefound on the premises, sources saidthese chemicals are used to manufac-ture the MDA (3,4-Methylenedioxy-amphetamine) drug – a psychoactivedrug similar to ecstasy, but stronger.

A brown Steyr .308 rifle with 140empty cartridges, eleven 308 liverounds, sixty four 9 × 19 mm rounds,seven empty 9 mm rounds, four trap12 bore rounds and 96 rifle magnumboxer primers were also found andconfiscated.

A female friend (34) of Botes, whowas also in the house during the raid,was initially arrested, but the caseagainst her was withdrawn.

Botes was released on bail of R1 000.The case has been postponed to 21

April for further investiga-tion.

Man in court for young girl’s rapeA 39-year-old man from Mbekweni appearedin the Paarl Magistrate’s Court yesterday tohear whether he would be granted bail afterallegedly raping an 11-year-old girl from hisneighbourhood.It is alleged that on 21 March at about 13:30

the young girl was playing outside withfriends near the suspect’s house, when hechased her friends away and called her to hishouse.There he put her on his bed, undressed her

and raped her.Awomaninformedthechild’smotherof the

incident, where after the girl was taken to aprivate doctor.

The suspect, who is apparently a well-known and prominent political figure in hiscommunity, was arrested that afternoon.His bail application was heard on Monday,

whereafter court was postponed until yester-day for a verdict on whether bail would begranted or denied.At the time of Paarl Post going to print,

court was still in session.The suspect had also been arrested in 2012

for allegedly raping a 9-year-old girl, but thecase was dismissed due to a lack of DNAevidence.The suspect has not yet pleaded and

therefore his identity cannot be disclosed.

However, com-plaints are often re-ceived from the pub-lic about the amountof electricity whichis literally stolen es-pecially in informalsettlements.This is commonly known as “spaghetti

wiring”, due to the large number of illegalwires hanging from overhead cables andleading to informal dwellings.According to thewebsiteoperationkhan-

yisa, the government has estimated thatelectricity theft costs South Africa a mas-sive R4,4-billion every year.And in a radio interview late last year

when load-sheddingwas once again imple-mented, Eskom spokesperson Andrew Et-zinger admitted that as much as 7% of thecountry’s electricity is stolen via illegalconnections, something the state powerutility can no longer afford.Not only is this an illegal practice, but

dangerous and often life-threatening.Electricity theft kills and injuries many

innocent childrenand toddlers everyyear.Illegal connections are extremely danger-ous because incorrect wiring is used, andthe wires that run across floors, pathwaysor streets, are often not insulated.Drakenstein municipal manager, Jo-

hannMettler said that losses of electricityandwater are a great concern and is beingclosely monitored.

“Loss of elec-tricity amount to8,45% annually ofthe total electrici-ty consumption.Approximately6%of this isattrib-utable to technicallosses and only2,45% to theft orfraud.“Approximate-

ly 60% of electrici-ty is consumed bybusiness and in-dustry, and 40%by households.“ The highest

costs for electrici-ty theft occur inbusiness and in-dustry, and there-fore these net-works’ meters are

more regularly tested for errors.“Allmeters are checked every few years

and audited and if tampering with theme-tres is established, fines are issued andsteps are taken to prevent future tamper-ing.“If this problem remains, an electricity

connection is terminated and the consum-er must reapply for it.”MettlersaidthatareassuchasFairyland

and Siyashlala, where households are notmetred individually, are, however, meter-ed at the relevant sub-station.“TheMunicipality, therefore, knows ex-

actly what the use is in these areas. Thecosts of these areas are deducted fromfunds received by themunicipality for theprovision of free basic services.”Hesaid that thereareplans tohave these

houses individually metred and illegalconnections will then be removed.“Communitymeetingswill take place to

Canoe club tobe completedLIEZL DAVIDS

Paarl Canoe Club will soon beable to make use of their newpremises after funding for thecompletion of the new buildingwas approved at last week’scouncil meeting.

Drakenstein Municipality madeR1,9 million available for thisproject. The money will be used tocompensate the contractor forwork already done, to complete therest of the clubhouse and to con-struct security fencing.

This comes after the contractorstopped work on the clubhouse,which was partially completed,when the Paarl WaterfrontDevelopment (PWDC) came to ahalt as a result of legal action andthe contractor was not paid by thedeveloper.

Last year the contractor in-formed the municipality that theyowed the company money for workalready done.

Mayor Gesie van Deventer ex-plainedthatthehalf-finishedbuild-ing is still regarded as an asset themunicipality has gained, andtherefore the municipality mustcompensate the contractor forwork already done.

In the meantime, the transactionbetween the municipality andPWDC is in the process of being ter-minated by a court order.

The Paarl Canoe Club welcomesthis decision as the current struc-ture, rented from the municipality,was gutted by fire almost two yearsago.

According to the previous chair-man, Eric Farringer, who respond-ed on behalf of the Paarl Canoe

Club, the old structure was dam-aged to such an extent that thereis no electricity and barely func-tioningwaterandsewagefacilities.

“The club is extremely gratefulto the municipality for deciding tocomplete the building that was ear-markedtobe thenewclubhouse forPaarl Canoe Club.”

Farringer has been involved inthenewclubhousenegotiationsforseveral years, first with the devel-opers and later with the municipal-ity.

According to Farringer the ca-noe club has a development pro-gramme with more than 50 previ-ously disadvantaged children whotrain every weekday after school.

“Development coach Wayne Au-gust makes sure they completetheir homework and a meal is pro-vided after training and homeworkare complete. The lack of proper fa-

cilities for these children has beena cause of great concern. Thankful-ly, this will no longer be a problemsoon.”

PaarlCanoeClubisalsoinvolvedin the iconic Berg River Marathonwhich starts at their club. Theyhave also taken on the responsibili-ty of organising a new race, thePinkLadyDrakensteinCanoeMar-athon, which replaces the oldSwartland Marathon. This racewill start and end at the club.

“As much as any other organisa-tion, the Drakenstein Municipalityis responsible for making this racepossible by providing the newfacility. Many members of the mu-nicipal government should bethanked, but councillor AidenStowman stands out as a supporterof the Paarl Canoe Club and our de-velopment programme. Manythanks to all.”

Is the road carnageset to continue?

For most of us the Easter long weekend is a welcome relief, as wellas a well-deserved break after the first few hectic months of the year.

But to many it is also a time of anguish and mourning as the carnageon our roads continues.

Although road deaths decreased last year over the Easter weekendperiod, they remain a problematic situation.

Twomainfactors thatcontribute towardsroaddeathsover thisperiodare speed and drunken driving.

It is estimated that around 330 motorists were arrested last year overthe Easter weekend for drunken driving alone.

And speed freaks continue to travel to their destinations at ridiculousspeeds, endangering many innocent lives along the way.

Yes, once again numerous awareness projects will remind us aboutroad safety measures for the Easter weekend, but unfortunately thedeath toll at the end of the day will tell another tale.

When it comes to road safety, the bottom line is that reckless driversfar too often just get rapped over their knuckles for endangering thelives of others, or in many instances, for taking them.

Only once relevant punishment is dealt to those who choose to usepublic roads as their personal playground, normality may return toour roads.

Die doel was om ’n volhoubare lê-hoender-plaas vir die Brinkhuis-familie in vennootskapmetWindmeulEiersteskep,’nmaatskappywatreeds 37 jaar ondervinding in die produksie enbemarking van eiers het.

Winde het die Wes-Kaapse regering se slag-spreuk“BetterTogether”gestandgedoentoehyuitgewys het: ”Projekte soos hierdie kan slegssuksesvol wees indien opregte verhoudinge ge-smee word tussen die ontluikende boer en dieervare boere. Hierdie verhouding moet gebouword op vertroue en wedersydse respek vir me-kaar.’’

Rotary celebrates110yearsThis year sees Rotary Internationalcelebrate 110 years since its humblebeginnings in Chicago in 1905.

BETTERTOGETHER.

The WESTERN CAPE GOVERNMENT, Provincial Roads and Transport Management Branch, have awarded the contract toAmandlaGCF Construction /Umzali Civils Joint Venture in November 2013. The contract is now 16 Months into theapproximate 20 months duration.

Ongoing Rehabilitation works will continue to focus on MR218 heading towards Paarl. We would like to formally notify allPaarl residents that works on MR 218 will continue from the R44 side Towards Paarl, whereby the one-way system will stayin place for traffic from the R44 towards Paarl. Traffic from Paarl towards the R44 will have to utelise Paardeberg Road andMR25 towardsMalmesbury to join the R44 again as per attached illustrated map below. There will be a Stop and Go Systemimplimented from the completed section of works up to Paardeberg Road - this will be impliment from Thursday 9th April2015 (See sketch below)

Traffic will be accomodated on the existing road or on temporary deviations. In some instances, signalled one-way trafficwill be necessary. Acccess to and from both commercial and private properties as well as intersecting roads shall bemaintained at all times.

It is a provision of the contract that traffic shall beaccommodated with the least delay and discomfort to thepublic. The safety and convenience of the travelling publicare of the utmost importance and every effort will be madeto ensure that all temporary road signs, traffic cones,flagmen and speed controls are maintained and areeffective, and that courtesy is extended to the public at alltimes. The public is requested to be patient and exercisecaution when using the road.

TOP ACHIEVERS: The Paarl MediaAcademy is proud to announce that itslearners achieved a 100% pass ratefor the Work Readiness Programme(WRP) and Foundational Learning Com­petence(FLC) programme that wasrecently completed through the Printand Packaging Bridging PilotProgramme (PPBPP). The primarytarget audience for the pilot pro­gramme was school leavers withoutmatric exemption as well as earlyschool leavers. The bridging pro­gramme is recognised as an entry levelprogramme into any of the printingand packaging trades or related quali­fications. This formal learning path willease individuals into the industry whileequipping them with the necessary lifeskills and foundational literacy and nu­meracy. The pilot project was approvedand fully funded by the Fibre Process­ing and Manufacturing Sector Educa­tion and Training Authority. What started out as a casual runon a normal Tuesday morning,endedwitha localPaarlitebeinghospitalisedwithseriousinjury.

RikusHorn (24), fromPaarl,wentonhis normal earlymorning jog onTuesday 24 March, but things soontooka turn for theworse afterHornhad a serious fall in Main Road.“I started my run frommy flat in

Pontac Street at around 06:00. Ichose a different route on my wayout, and thought the Main Roadwouldbe theeasiestway togetbackto my flat.”At around 06:30 while jogging on

thepavementinfrontofAbsaBank,Horn’s left foot struck a brickwhich was poking out unevenly.“Iwas completely unaware of the

protruding brick and the momentmy foot struck the pointy edge, Itried to regain my balance. As I ex-tended my right foot to force mybody upright, my left leg gave wayto the leftandcollapsedunderneathmy weight.”As soon as Horn’s body hit the

pavement, heknewsomething seri-

ous was wrong.“I lay flat on the

ground with my backfacing Main Road. Acouple of minutespassed where I tried tomovemylegandgetup.Not having my smart-phone with me, I start-ed to panic and tried tograbtheattentionofby-passers .”Luckily for Horn, a

couple who were ontheirwaytoWellingtonfrom the gym, saw himlying next to the road.“Initially Jacques

and Sonja Maraisthought that I had beenstruck by a car. Theyproceeded to phone the ambulanceafter another good Samaritanstopped to help. The unknownwomanphonedmymother and toldherwhatwasgoingon. Ireallywantto thank these three people for alltheir help.”Horn was rushed to hospital

where his injuries were assessedand a emergency operation wasbooked.

“It turned out thatmy fall was more se-verethanIthoughtandI suffered a fractureddislocation in my lefthip.”Horn was subse-

quently told to take abreak from work fortwo weeks, and he willbe spending quitesome timeoncrutches.A specialist will deter-mine the amount oftime before he can jogagain but it is expectedto be several months.The Drakenstein

Municipal manager,Johann Mettler, hadthe pavement inspect-

ed.“TheMunicipality wishes the in-

jured person a speedy recovery.Weinspected the area and identifiedtwo bricks which will be repairedas soon as possible.”The municipality urges the pub-

lic to report these types of problemsto the complaints centre on021 806 4500 or e-mail customer-care@drakenstein.gov.za.

South Africa’s premier rare winecharity sale raised a total of R209 000for the beneficiaries with charityauctioneer Ken Forrester knockingdown, amongst other items, 12750 ml bottles of Nederburg VintageCabernet 1975 for R47 500 and theVan Ryn’s Charentaise Collection of10-year-old potstill brandy forR25 000.

Nederburg Auction team repre-sentative Moira de Koker presentedbeneficiary representatives TheoKemp, executive manager for theBreytenbach Centre, and SandraRandall, project coordinator forHope Through Action, with a chequefor R104 500 each to use for their re-spective community outreach pro-jects. The presentation took place atthe Nederburg winery in Paarl

TheBreytenbachCentre isamulti-disciplinaryculturalcentre thatpro-vides a platform for the youth to gainaccess to the arts, also offering lifeskills to help them make responsiblechoices, while the community-driv-en Hope Through Action projectreaches out to young people through

been earmarked for the boys’ pro-jects currently underway at theMbekweni Community Sports Cen-tre,” says Randall.
