    A

    s international trade grows

    and supply chains expand,

    there is now an absolute

    ocus on reliable, low-cost

    and rapid delivery channels.

    Manuacturers need fexible

and cheaper links to suppliers in remote areas

and the intensiying competition or new

markets means the nished goods need to be

delivered to the customers very oten on

    short deadlines. Moreover, many start-up

companies might not have the resources to

invest in a logistics system o their own. Add

to this the act that getting a dierent par tner

or each stage o the supply chain is both

cumbersome, as well as susceptible to more

constant breakdowns. This has led to the move

towards Third Party Logistics (3PL) becoming

even more pronounced as more and moremanuacturers outsource all stages o their

production except marketing, sales and high-

    level management. Hence, these companies

also need best possible logistics to handle

    their extended supply chains.

ENTER 3PLThird party logistics rms are those companies

which take this a step orward and dont just

provide transportation o goods, but also oer

    acilities such as consolidation, orwarding,

    customs brokerage, warehousing, ulllment,

distribution, less than truck services and

    practically any trade-related services that

their customer needs. Moreover, using 3PL

companies gives manuacturers the ability to

track their shipments real-time by using GPS

monitoring and other measures feet operators

use to manage their feet. Vikas Mit tal, MD,

McCain Foods India, believes that the need

to have a specialised logistics partner is even

more signicant or an expansive country as

India, where logistics accounts or as much as

13 per cent o the GDP (`6,750 bn) compared

cent). This is largely due to poor quality

o inrastructure and the unorganised road

    transport sector.

This is what is prompting everyone rom

global rms who to set up actories in India

to smaller start-ups to seek out organised

partners who are nancially stable, dependable

and who want to be partners in the business,

rather than just be a transporter. According to

Indiastat Database, KPMG Analysis, the 3PL

sector in India is witnessing an annual growth

o 30 per cent which is in sharp contrast with

the 10 per cent growth which the sector is

seeing globally. Indias 3PL market is projected

to witness a CAGR o around 26 per cent in

2011-2013, resulting in a revenue opportunity

    o nearly `24,451 crore ($4.6 billion) by 2013.

This is also benecial or the feet operator

because it gives him the possibility o

diversiying his business. Moreover, it gives

him a perennial source o income since he

is billing the client or everything rom

    transportation to warehouse storage and

    distribution.

HOW 3PL WORKSThe 3PL system has been extensively used

in Europe and America, and now in countries

like China, which have become major

manuacturing hubs. In China, where a ew

hundred actories that manuacture a large

portion o the worlds garments, consumer

electronics and other products, the logistics

    inrastructure is quite primitive, especially

as you move inland. The major retailers and

    manuacturers outsourcing to these actories

are using their relationships with large 3PLs

to control their overseas vendors logistics

perormance. A ew large 3PLs rms under

US or European buyers handle the logistics

rom the actories to the nal destination. This

is increasingly true as more companies havestarted using India as a hub or production or

South-East Asia. Global sourcing and growing

    competition among manuacturers have made

material movement more complex, giving rise

to third party logistics players. According to

estimates, Japan (80 per cent) accounts or a

high proportion o 3PL to the overall logistics

activity compared with India (9 per cent).

    By outsourcing their logistics activities,

    manuacturers are not only concentrating

on their core business operations, but also

    achieving cost-eciency, improving delivery

    perormance and enhancing customer

satisaction. For instance, a company which

has a transportation spend worth `1 crore

by tying up with a 3PL company which has

a spend o`100 crores will be able to have

a lower transportation cost due to increase

in business. Moreover, 3PL companies are

catering to the manuacturers by extending to

them acilities such as specic packing, cross

docking, auto replenishment systems and real-

    time tracking o shipments.

3PL IN INDIAOne o the leading logistics and transpor tation

supply chain and logistics solutions with a

    global presence, is Transport Corporation

    Genex Logistics, Director,

    Mr.Mansingh Jaiswal

As a 3PL provider, we spotted

the gap that connects with the

other side of the providers and

have been able to create solutions

around this that are not only

    specific but also integrated ones

    covering end-to-end activities

    THIRD PARTY LOGISTICS PLAYERS

    DIESL, National Operations Head,

    Mr.Vikram Mansukhani

    Our bouquet of offerings,

    coupled with extensive experience

over the last 10 years is backed

    by internationally benchmarked

    IT systems. This has helped

establish DIESL as a leader in

    Indian Logistics Industry

oering logistics solutions to other Indian

companies, have turned these logistics division

into prot centres. Other major players like

Gati, Saexpress and Blue Dart have also

started oering 3PL services. DIESL (Drive

India Enterprise Solutions), a Tata group

company, jointly owned by Tata Industries

and Tata International, is a leading provider o

integrated logistics solutions, with over 176

    warehouses connecting 4,000 towns across

India. DIESL operates more than 4.4 million sq

t o warehouse area, covering around 90 per

cent o the countrys districts and managing

over 1.25 million transactions per month. Mr.

Ajay Chopra, CEO o DIESL explains, Its not

about stung your goods in a warehouse

or a truck, its about providing multi-scaled,integrated systems driven solutions that add

    value to your supply chain.

Future Supply Chain is another example o a

successul 3PL company. Its centre in Bhiwandi

caters to ood and FMCG sectors while its

state o the art distribution centre at Nagpur

processes 400,000 pieces o apparel per day.

The company has warehousing storage capacity

o over six million sq t spread across strategic

    locations in India. Express transportation

services o Future Supply Chains are provided

    pan-India through its hub-and-spoke model

and the companys International logistics cater

to exports and imports. We associate with

our customers to provide optimal supply chain

network through a hub-and-spoke model and

other services to enable shortest time-to-market

and lowest cost-to-market, Mr Anshuman Singh,

MD and CEO o Future Supply Chains, explains.

Another example is Genex Logistics that

ocuses on value creation through process

innovations. Its 3PL solution has been

beneciary or a leading apparel and ashion

retailer. Genex Logistics is considered as

an appropriate partner because o their rich

    experience in 3PL services.

As is clear by Genex and FSCs experience,

the best example o the need or logistics is

in the apparel sector. Customer needs in the

sector are very dynamic and the retailer had to

respond to change in demands very quickly. In

order to ensure customer satisaction, supply-

chain solution is the need o the hour to ensure

entire range o activities rom sourcing to sales

are well-synchronised within shortest possibletime. This high-level service eciency has to be

coupled with least possible operational costs,

which is the biggest challenge or a retailer.

As a 3PL provider, we spotted the gap that

connects with the other side o the providers,

and have been able to create solutions around

this that are not only specic, but also integrated

    ones covering end-to-end activities, Genex

Logistics Director Mr. Mansingh Jaiswal said.

CHALLENGE FOR THE FLEET OPERATORThe challenge or the large feet operators

is how to implement an ecient system that

would deliver goods to their destinations

on time while achieving a sizeable prot

margin. FedEx and UPS have successully

    implemented the hub-and-spoke model to

    attain a competitive logistics advantage.

    Future Supply Chain, MD and

    We associate with our

    customers to provide optimal

    supply chain network through a

hub and spoke model and other

    services to enable shortest

    time-to-market and lowest cost-

    to-market

    TCI SCS, President and CEO

    Mr Jasjit Sethi

    The services encompass

    small parcels to over-

    dimensional cargo, express

    movement to warehousing.

contributor to improve processes in supply

chain at Dabur has been the technology.

Future Supply Chains too oers state-o-the-

art distribution centres with multi-level racking

MHEs, RF guns, etc, and uses a GPS-based

    vehicle tracking system.

The usage o a feet management system

is an important aspect o the 3PL, and is

employed by everyone rom TCI to Future

    Supply Chains since monitoring such

a large feet and ensuring its eciency

becomes a critical part o the services

oered to the client. Moreover, active feet

    management through GPS systems (which

pass on the inormation about feet movement

to a centralised control room) ensures youknow feet availability to take on new orders,

reduce turn-around time and, at the same

time, can provide real-time updates to your

    clients about their orders.

By becoming a 3PL player, a feet owner, not

only gets a perennial source o income, but

also increases his prot margin due to more

value added services that he provides. He

has also moved up the value chain and thus

plays an even stronger role in the economy.

Also, since he is working as the complete

solutions provider, he can integrate with his

clients strategies. This enables him to plan his

resources in a much more ecient way. He can

anticipate more loads, thus buy better trucks,

plan his requirement o unds and drivers well

in advance. This ensures that his feet is never

short on carrying loads and is utilised to the

    optimum.

reduce transportation cost, it also improves

the cycle times and reduces inventory.

Express & Logistics (EXL) is one o Indias

rst companies to create a hub-and-spoke

distribution model in an industry, which is still

in the early stages o development. According

to Indiastat Database, large feet operators,

too, have started experimenting with the

hub-and-spoke model, which has resulted in

increase o their market share rom just 2 per

cent in 1994-95 to 11 per cent in 2010-11.

The model can be practiced by small and

medium feet operators who can integrate

themselves into the hub-and-spoke network o

a large feet operator and act as their spoke. It

is a smart solution to meet the transportation

    demands o a booming nation.

FLEET MANAGEMENT SYSTEMSTechnology remains the buzzword when

it comes to 3PL. Recently, DIESL roped in

Tata Consultancy Services or 100 crore

As the Indian transport andlogistics sector spreads

its wings, the onus is on

    the Indian feet operator

    to develop into a provider

    o end-to-end services,

rather than a mere provider o transportation

services. With a renewed ocus on adopting

the hub-and-spoke system to spread network,

increase feet utilisation and enhance revenues,

warehouses have become an integral part o

supply chain. The hub-and-spoke model, which

the Indian transportation sector is ocusingon, requires goods to be transported rom the

manuacturing acilities to major hubs where

they are unloaded, assorted, tagged, and then,

    transported between smaller centres, rom

where they complete their last mile. In this

eature, we ocus on warehouses and how

setting them is the last piece o the puzzle,

making you a complete service provider.

WHY DO WE NEED A WAREHOUSE?According to a KPMG report, driven by the

    growth in production and consumption,

    organised retail, logistics outsourcing and

goods and service tax, the demand or

warehousing in India will grow at 6.8 per

cent annually during 2010-13. The Indian

    industrys requirement or warehousing space

is expected to grow rom 391 million sq t o

storage space in 2010 to 476 million sq t in

2013. This demand is uelled by the demand by

the engineering goods, IT, electronics & telecom

sectors, whose demand or warehousing space

is expected to grow by 8.2 per cent and 8.6 per

    cent, respectively.

This presents the Indian feet operator a golden

opportunity to develop his warehousing acilitiesand expand business.

WHO NEEDS A WAREHOUSE?The modern Indian Warehouse is a ar cry rom the

concept o a warehouse or a godown, which is a

mere our-walls and a shed. It is now a state-o-

the-art set up eaturing high levels o automation,

    multi-rack, palletisation inrastructure etc.

But, at the core o it remains the need to securely

store goods, away rom natural calamities and

sae rom thet, in such a way that the products

can be eciently provided to the consumer at

the given time o requirement. The need or a

warehouse arises due to the time gap between

production and consumption o products. By

bridging the gap between production and

consumption, a warehouse creates time utility. A

warehouse enables a rm to carry on production

in anticipation o demand in uture and sell their

products whenever there is adequate demand.

The need or a warehouse arises, also, because

some goods are produced only in a particular

season, but are demanded throughout the year.

For instance, a Chennai-based company produces

light xtures which are in demand in Delhi and

nearby areas. In order to ensure that its orders are

delivered to the customers on time, it is unable

to wait or a ull truck load to transport xtures

to Delhi, which will be both time-consuming as

well as expensive. This is when the warehouse

steps in. Now imagine i the same company had

transported its light xtures to a warehouse in

anticipation o the demand, these light xtures

were then assorted, stocked and saely stored

at a warehouse on the outskirts o Delhi romwhere they could be transported according to

the demand. At the same time, it might not be

cost-ecient or a small company to develop its

own warehouse. On the other end o the spectrum

could be an Italian company which produces

shoes that have a market in Mumbai. For the

company to ship these shoes as per demand

would be a lot more expensive proposition than

shipping them en masse, and then supplying to

their local counterparts as per demand.

HOW DOES A WAREHOUSE WORK?TCI warehouses, or instance, oer inrastructure

to unload goods, rack them, store them saely

and then load them back onto trucks using

orklits and stackers, when the demand is

received. In addition to this, they also boast o

    IT-driven Warehouse Management Systems,

    Hand-Held Scanners, well-documented and

rened processes or receipt, put-away, picking,

Warehouses need not be acreswide, but spacious enough to holdwhatever the customers would want

value-added services such as ticketing, labelling,

returns besides oering back-end support to

the customer and coordinating between the

    suppliers and the end-customers.

Warehousing is a win-win proposition or both

feet operators, as well as the manuacturers.

It ensures that the manuacturers can

concentrate on their core business and leave

the rest o the work to proessional rms

and at the same guarantees feet operator a

permanent and perennial source o business.

However, building a warehouse does present

its share o problems. For instance, it exerts

even greater pressure on the logisticscompanies need to be ecient in their

operations and mechanise warehouses in order

to cut costs and reduce losses. Moreover,

feet operators need to benchmark processes

and systems and ormulate metrics to meet

    world-class eciency and productivity levels

especially when it comes to dealing with

    international customers. Companies need to

use metrics to measure on-time delivery, order

    ulllment, ll rate etc.

HOW TRUCKERS INDIA DID ITWarehouses are expected to constitute about

35 per cent o the total logistics industry

in India. Major players in the warehousing

    segment are Central Warehousing Corporation,

    State Warehousing Corporation, and Food

    Corporation o India.

But, the perect case study is that o Truckers

India. Established in 1950 as M.M.O & Co., the

Assam-based rm was retained to undertake

logistics and warehousing or Indian Tobacco

Company (ITC), then known as the Imperial

Tobacco Company. They have now grown to beone o Indias most prominent logistics, reight

    distribution and warehousing companies and

boast o several blue chip FMCG companies

as clients. In 1980, Truckers India emerged

as a division and soon expanded its base to

cover over almost the entire country. Today,

the company serves over 1,200 towns and

cities in India, with a feet o around 300

vehicles, a combined sta strength exceeding

    250 and a storage space exceeding 7,25,000

square eet (approximately 50,000 sq mt).

mind while setting up a warehouse. The most

essential is its location, which should be both

well connected, as well as in close proximity o

the manuacturing hubs o the clients. The most

    common misconception is that warehouses

need to, by denition, be acres wide. They

just need to be large enough to ulll yourand your clients requirements and acilitate

easy loading and unloading o goods. Most

o the overhead expenses go into buying,

constructing, renting or outtting a building or

    several buildings.

According to the KPMG report, the best areas

    or developing warehouses are Mumbai,

National Capital Region (NCR) and Nagpur.

Other attractive locations lie in major western

    and southern cities. The warehousing

landscape in India is witnessing multiple

    interesting trends, including increasing

    opportunities across many user segments,

emergence o attractive tier-2 cities as

warehousing locations and several key buying

    preerences o customers, Manish Saigal,

Head Transportation and Logistics or KPMGIndia writes in the paper.

According to him, a boost or the Indian

warehousing sector could be the onset o GST,

which has potential to revamp the national

warehousing network. According to the act,

which is still pending in Parliament, both

Central and State taxes will be collected at

the point o sale, ruling out multiple layers o

taxation that currently exist. Both components

will be charged on the manuacturing cost.

The company has urther ver tically integrated

itsel, and is creating built-to-suit logistic parks

or its clients. With over 260,000 square eet

o space already created, they have another

400,000 square eet o space in the pipeline.

With the vast experience the company has, in

this eld. Truckers India has adopted various

green initiatives to ensure that its Logistic

Parks are sustainable and eco-r iendly. It also

boasts o an extensive communications and IT

network, including a customized in-house feet

management system, coupled with an online

GPS vehicle tracking system, and an online

accountancy system that helps them keep tracko their operation.

"Our core competency is in clearing and

    orwarding warehouses models. At present,

we have warehouses in 28 cities across India,

which specialise in services such as total

    material handling, enterprise resource planning

(ERP), stock inventory management etc, Mr.

Ankush Gujral, partner at Truckers India shares.

Genex Logistics is another company which,

    besides operating 12 warehouses across

India, has also developed a FTWZ (Free Trade

Warehouse Zone). An FTWZ or all practical

purposes are Integrated Zones which are

designated a oreign territory or the purpose

o carrying on unhindered business. The

Government o India then extends acilities like

tax, duty deerment benets, reduction in custom

clearance times and excise duty exemptions or

    manuacturers using these FTWZs.

Mr. Prakash, a senior ocial o ONS Logistics,

another senior player on the Indian warehousing

scene, shares, "We believe in consolidationprocesses. Dierent packages addressed

to the same receiver calls or consolidation.

This ensures that the customer availing o our

services incurs minimum cost, at the same time,

the service provider, gets the maximum margin."

WHAT TO KEEP IN MINDThe Government o India oers subsidies to

    people setting up rural warehouses/godowns

are, however, a couple o things to keep in

This will benet individuals as prices are likely

to come down. Lower prices will lead to more

    consumption, thereby helping companies.

WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMSWarehouse management systems (WMS)

help manage warehouse resources eciently.WMS are generally associated with larger

    and more complex distribution operations.

However, even smaller and mid-size companies

    are increasingly recognising the signicance

    o WMS in today's environment o integrated

logistics, JIT (just in time) delivery and

    e-commerce.

Logistics players have recognised that they

    need varied and comprehensive logistics

expertise or each region and state to address

the geographical diversity o India and

    remain competitive.

For larger feet operators, the warehouse

and distribution service will prove to be a

    great investment.

RETAIL HUBS AT WAREHOUSES?These days, a large number o individuals and

    small-scale businesses order smaller quantities

    o materials rom warehouse distributors.

However, their orders are more requent than

the ones placed by larger companies. Doubling

warehouses as retail stores, with the larger

orders on top shelves and smaller bundles

on the lower ones or the walk-in consumers,

is one marketing trend that is increasingly

catching on. This automatically makes a

warehouse a one stop shop. Another marketing

trend which is more in tune with internet

subscribers is gaining traction again, with

small orders being shipped worldwide rom

    various warehouses.

For large feet operators, the warehouse anddistribution service is a great way to conduct

business as it is a sensible investment which

will increase their prot margins in a big way.

At the same time, warehouses can also be

very benecial or smaller feet operators who

can integrate into the network o a large feet

operator and oer its warehousing acilities to

its clients. Alternatively, a small feet operator

can look to develop smaller rural warehouses

which can integrate into the a large feet

    operators network.

For large leet operators, warehouses are an investment

as they double up retail hubs

AT A GLANCEBharatBenz gives importance to intricate

details, which ensures that the trucks are

sturdy, reliable, powerul and o top-notch

quality each time. Our customers swear that

BharatBenz trucks are truly made or India, as

their trucks have been taken to dierent and

toughest terrains all over the country without

    acing any problems whatsoever.

Mr. Byram Dhalla, Managing Director, B.D

Dhalla Transport, is a leading high-volume

transporter o lubricants like Castrol, Shell,

    Total etc. The Mumbai-based businessman's

main concern was not compromising on

quality. "Buying a quality product was cer tainly

one o the big plus points or us to go or a

BharatBenz truck," he says. Dhalla adds with asense o pride, "I believe we have the very rst

truck that was invoiced in the country. We are

proud to be owners o that truck."

    It was BharatBenz's superior technology

that convinced both Mr. H.R. Khurana and

Mr. Ram Krishna o Sheetal Parivahan to join

the BharatBenz amily. As they deal in

perishable ood like rozen meat, sh, ice

the engine, gearbox, chassis and compared

it with other companies. It was obvious that

    BharatBenz's technology was much better,"

    voiced both the business partners.

Agreeing to this, VRL Logistics, Chairman and

Managing Director, Mr. Vijay Sankeswar, said,

"This is a German product, so the technology is

    very good."

Mr. Tushar Ghatge, Managing Director, GhatgePatil Transports, admits to being foored by

    Mr. M.C. Narendra

In BharatBenz trucks, the mileage is very

good. I'm getting around 4.2 kmpl on an

average load, compared to 3.8 kmpl with other

trucks. This amounts to Rs 20,000 savings per

month, nearly hal o my EMI amount.

"Imagine, these trucks are 100 per cent ready

to transport goods throughout the month, that

is 30 days. This is certainly a revolution or us."

POWER PACKEDThe power generated by our trucks took our

customers by surprise. Most them could not

stop raving about the engine and its eciency.

Mr. Priyajit Barad, Director, Ketan Constructions,

was all smiles when he said, "These trucks have

the most powerul engines in the market. Their

phenomenal output makes a dierence as we

can now nish six trips instead o our in the

same time. This is a big improvement."

VRL Logistics' Mr. Sankeswar is also o the

same view. "With higher horsepower, it hasbeen proven that while other trucks do our

trips, these vehicles can do ve trips. Our

productivity has increased and we can provide

good service to our customers" he said.

But not everything is about power eels

    Mr. Vishal Choksi, Director, Shreenath

Mr. M.C. Narendra, Proprietor, Sri Rama Weigh

BharatBenz trucks, the mileage is very good

compared with other trucks. I'm getting

around 4.2 kmpl on an average load, which

is very good. Other trucks are nowhere near

BharatBenz as they return only 3.8 kmpl." In

terms o productivity and expenses, he said,

"I do around 4 trips to Ahmedabad per month.

With BharatBenz trucks, I save around `20,000

per month, which is almost hal o my EMIamount."

It's not just the feet owners who are impressed

Keeping in mind the dynamic natureo business, our trucks are designedto be highly reliable and eicient

    The Indian economy moves just

as well as its road transport

    network and the vehicles that

ply on it. With 75 per cent

    o the reight market share,

according to Indiastat, it is o

utmost importance or the Indian trucking

industry to create solutions that maximise

operational eciency o vehicles to keep the

businesses unctioning the way they should

be with a prot margin! The need o the

hour is a truck which can do more and astertrips in challenging conditions, without letting

the cost o operation escalate. And this is

where BharatBenz comes into the picture.

Our portolio o trucks are developed ater

lakhs and lakhs o kilometres o testing under

gruelling conditions and have been built

specially keeping in mind the requirements o

    Indian feet operators and drivers.

BharatBenz Light Duty Trucks are designed to

t into all business and operating requirements

in India. With LDTs beginning to play a

growing role in the hub-and-spoke system o

transportation, the demand or ecient, robust

LDTs is at an all time high. This model involves

transportation o reight by Heavy Duty Trucks

and Medium Duty Trucks to dierent hubs in

the country, and then using LDTs to carry the

required cargo to its nal destination. The use

o LDTs in the nal leg o the journey rom

the hub to the destination o delivery (spoke)

ensures optimum utilisation o space and

    operating eciency.

Our new LDTs have been designed specically

to ulll our customers requirements and the

benets will be visible rom the rst day o use

itsel, as BharatBenz trucks meet the highest

standards o quality at a competitive price. We

have achieved this with a localisation o over

90 per cent in our LTDs, without compromising

on the high standards o quality that Daimler

swears by globally. Our trucks have undergonea cumulative testing o 75 lakh km at our

track in Oragadam, Chennai. The track has

been designed in such a way that the 5.6 km

stretch simulates the roads and terrain rom

Kanyakumari to Kashmir. The LDT range is

based on the FUSO Canter platorm, a leading

light-duty truck brand in Asia. Though the

Canter platorm is a tried and tested one, the

trucks themselves have been built ground-up.

CLASS LEADING FUEL EFFICIENCYThe new 914 and 1214 haulage trucks come

with a host o eatures which will make sure

that customers get the best in mileage and

maintenance costs. The high pressure CRDI

engine injects a precise amount o uel into the

cylinders at 1,600 bar, ensuring a superior air-

uel mixture. It also boasts o 4 valves in each

cylinder which ensure an increase in the infow

o resh air and exhaust movement o gases

out o the cylinders. This not only achieves

better combustion, it also ensures higher uel

    eciency. Working together these eatures

make the BharatBenz LDT range a class leader

    in uel eciency.

The engine delivers its peak torque curve over

a wide range o engine speeds. In act, even

at low speeds, the torque is quite high. This

reduces the need or constant gear shits,

which aids mileage. Both the 914 and the 1214

come with an overdrive gearbox which helps

the trucks cruise at sustained speeds in lowRPMs, resulting in ecient highway trips. The

gearbox also provides or stronger gears with

more contact area, and shot peening make it

very reliable. This, coupled with a viscous an,

helps keep the engine at its optimum operating

temperature to achieve the best possible uel

eciency. The BharatBenz LDTs will deliver

our customers a uel eciency benet o at

least 10 per cent compared with the options

    available in the market today.

The robust 3,907 cc engine provides or a

longer lie, as well as less noise. The Electronic

Control Unit (ECU), with its sensors, have

made the engine responsive in all sorts o

terrain. Since LDTs spend a lot o their time in

trac and congested areas, the diameter o

its clutch plate has been inc reased to 330 mm

or the 9 tonne version and 362 mm or the 12

tonne one. This ensures more contact area or

better power transmission and lower slippage.

The concentric slave cylinders installed in the

9 tonne version increases the plate lie and

lowers the clutch pedal eort, which goes on

to make the truck easier to drive in trac.

The LDTs load carrying capacity has not been

compromised as the trucks sport semi-elliptical

suspension is aided by the heavy banjo type

axles, which ensure strength and durability.

And, all this sits on a Canter chassis which

    boasts o a higher depth o 228 mm and a

fange width o 80 mm which improves its

BUILT AROUND THE DRIVERKeeping in mind the person who is expected

to drive, our trucks are designed to be highly

comortable and sae. This also goes a long way

in increasing driver productivity, in what is a very

harsh trucking environment here in India. The

cabin sports a Doorwell structural rame, side

door beams and a reinorced cab foor and box

rame. These measures will ensure that the crew

are sae in the event o a collision.

The cabin is spacious and ergonomically

designed with enhanced ventilation. The seats

are two-way adjustable equipped with lumbar

support and head rests. The steering is o a tilt

and telescopic kind, which can be moved up/

down and orward/backward to achieve the

best driving position. It is made o PU material

or enhanced grip and comort. The gear shit

lever too is placed very conveniently, and

sports a cable shit mechanism which makes

shiting as smooth and precise as a car.

An ideally positioned digital instrument cluster

    provides inormation like distance-to-empty,

    progressive mileage and engine temperature

indicators, giving the driver ample warning to

take corrective measures in case o malunction.

To increase operational ease, the parking

brake lever and the exhaust brake switch are

conveniently located or easy reach. All these

mean that the driver can be at the wheel or a

longer duration, without eeling road weary.

tacky and a bit boring. The games articial

intelligence doesnt give a challenge to serious

drivers, but or everyone it is a good challenge especially under the Proessional diculty

level. Theyll cut corners, take shortcuts,

optimises their vehicles or a given track.

go seriously o-road, you can easily beat your

opponents as theyll mostly stick to the roads.

The games graphics, or its time, are airly

decent. Jig the settings and the graphics appear

particle eects which arent smoke eects are

will simply appear as coloured pixels. Ironically,

though, the game actually looks best when

using the built-in sotware renderer instead o

    hardware acceleration.

JEREMY MCGRATHS OFFROADRev up your 4-wheel trucks engine and get

into the renzy o rallying. The diculty levelgradually increases, giving players enough

then there is an option to use McGraths expert

advice to make the game simpler.

TRUCKSFORMERSThis monster truck game is a world ull o

    obstacles and explosions. With Trucksormers,

THE KING OF ROUTE 66You learn that the amous highway Route 66i

is ruled by an evil organisation Tornado. They

which once helped create the Route 66 legacy.

You choose rom amongst one o ve truckers,

each with his own strengths and weaknesses

in the categories o speed, torque and truck

weight, and set out on the highway, challenging

thugs. Along your mission, business owners

will charge you with dierent missions to help

you in your quest. This ranges rom time-

    based delivery situations to no-holds-barred

races against rival truckers. The multiple

mission options keep things interesting. The

gameplay is as expected, even though thesetrucks are a bit sluggish. You are provided with

nitro containers that can help you speed past

opponents. But, speed means serious sacrice

in control o the truck. So, the game is as

    challenging as it is eventul.

BIG RIGS OVER THE ROAD RACINGBig Rigs serves up brake-jamming, convoy-

rolling action across the United States o

America. Players climb into their big rig or

some non-stop cross-country driving action and

race rom Portland, Oregon, to Miami, Florida,

hauling loads and trying to stay one step ahead

o the law. For those who like circuit racing

better than point-to-point, the developers have

also included ve dierent tracks or time trials

or more outrageous driving action. There

are ve courses and our dierent rigs in the

Custom Race mode. This is a game built on a

serious budget, so dont expect any cutting

edge graphics. But expect some good old-

    ashioned truck driving.

TRUCKERS OF THE APOCALYPSEThe concept o this game was to simulate

the trucking/hauling business by giving more

attention to the actual driving than the actual

    nancial and bureaucratic elements involved

in the real proession. The player starts the

game with a beaten-up rig and has to improve

his status by buying a truck/trucks and hiring

drivers to make a large transport company.

it also provides the Indian feet operator an

opportunity to use the sides o these containers

WHAT IS TRUCK BRANDINGWe live in times where brand-building is as integral

to a business as the distribution network itsel

and this holds true or the entire Indian transport

industry too. By putting your logo on your trucks,

you give those driving on the highways a reminder

o your brand and give yoursel a higher recall

value. The more oten the clients see your brand,

the more likely they are to call on you when they

need your services. For instance, someone whoneeds to shit cities instantly thinks o Agarwal

Packers and Movers thanks to the massive

branding activities that they carry out on their

trucks. And they get this top-o-the-mind recall

without spending a signicant chunk o their

revenue on advertising on regular mediums such

    as newspapers, magazines and television.

While truck branding is a very common practice

    Benefits of truck advertising

It is a cost effective branding medium that reaches into

the city, suburbs, state or nationally across the country.

It gets your message to the client in all areas of their

everyday lives, from where they live, work and play, to

where they drive and shop, where they commute and

    travel, and where they congregate.

It increases the perception of the brand and adds more

    prestige to the name.

shied away rom branding their containers

due to a variety o reasons the primary ones

being the lack o knowledge and a feet which

predominantly comprises o older trucks. Amit

Gupta, Director o Global Advertisers, mostIndian feet owners are still, by and large,

unaware o the marketing value o their trucks.

However, as the Indian logistics market heads

towards consolidation, by acquisition o more

modern trucks and the rising share o LFOs,

truck branding is acquiring even more scope.

Primary players among the ones who have

recognised the potential o truck branding

are international brands like PepsiCo, Coca-

cola and automobile giants Maruti Suzuki,

    Hyundai, apart rom other multi-national

companies. They are very conscious o the

scope o advertising and branding on their

    delivery and transportation trucks.

According to Automobile Blogger, Darius Lam,

since the make and condition o the trucks

being used or branding matters a lot, the

uture lies with large feet operators who own

more than 20 modern vehicles and operate on

    a pan-India level.

NOT JUST BRANDINGAdvertising proessionals eel there is a lot o

potential to use these trucks or, not just brand-

building, but, also as advertising avenues which

have the possibility o growing into a new scope

o revenue or the feet operators.

Anand Prakash, Marketing Head at Park

Avenue, eels that there are several advantagesor brands to use trucks over billboards. "One

o the biggest advantages o truck ads, over

conventional billboards, is that they can travel

virtually anywhere. While billboards can only be

placed at certain locations and are governed by

city ordinances, a truck ad provides you more

reedom and fexibility. A billboard truck can

help spread your advertising message locally

or even across the country. You could even

plan a nationwide truck ad campaign, says

Prakash. He eels that the potential or moving

billboards is immense, since these trucks can

carry the message to several locations in a

single day. Companies that have their own

dedicated feet can plan an advertising strategy

so that audiences end up viewing their truck

    advertisement repeatedly. Billboard truck

ads increase the chances o viewers turninginto customers. Rajiv Mehta, Director o Blue

Oceans Media, too, agrees that truck operators

who run modern, well-maintained feets have

the possibility o attracting advertising. It can

be a very cost eective advertising solution

or gaining brand mileage in tier II and tier III

    cities, Mehta says.

ENTER TRANSIT MEDIAWhile in India, the transit media advertising

industry is still at a nascent stage, in other

The growing popularity o truckadvertising is due to its abilityto get noticed and draw attentionto the message

markets, the impressions gathered by billboard

trucks are monitored and assessed by using

GPS devices installed in the trucks. As more

and more Indian feet operators move towards

GPS tracking, advertisers are condent that

they can be used to measure responses and

the reach o the messages in the near uture. InIndia, BTL companies have started recognising

the potential o using heavy vehicles as moving

billboards in transit advertising, and have just

recently included it as part o their services.

With 3D concepts being used requently, the

designs are very innovative and eye-catching.

Well known companies like Moser Baer have

already realised the potential or this, and

have customised containers built to resemble

Moser Baer pen drives. These containers

are a regular presence on the Delhi-Jaipur

highway. Bharat Kohli, senior art executive o

Lintas, thinks this is because, The fexibility

that feet advertising oers, allow designers

to customise a brand message to suit the

unique tastes o the audiences that reside on

the route where these moving billboard ply. Acompelling digital design always commands

notice, helping companies increase their brand

presence across the length and breadth o

    the country.

HOW VEHICLE WRAPPING WORKSThe design is printed on special vinyl adhesive

and then the wrap is pasted on dierent

trucks, transorming the vehicle into a rolling

billboard. Alternately, you can paint the truck

with the brand logo o your service, even a

phone number that you could be contacted on

by users and the message you want to convey.

At the same time, in both cases the driver and

the cleaner need to be made aware to keep

the exterior o the truck clean and drive with

discipline on the highways. A badly maintainedtruck, with your branding on it or being badly

driven, will have a negative impression o your

    brand on the audience.

While advertising on the sides o your truck

and using it as a revenue source might

still be a little way o, using your truck to

communicate your message and build your

brand name will go a long way in establishing

you as a premium and proessional feet

    operator.

The new buzzwordSAFETYAlarmed at the increasing number o highway accidents, leetoperators are going all out to make the Indian highways a saer placewords Anshika Ajmera Chhabra

    Indias rapidly expanding highway network

has posed a rather strange problem or

    the Indian highway trac maintaining

    delivery schedules, while negotiating

    constant detour, circumventing highway

constructions and work zones. Very oten,

this makes an already-alarming situation even

more precarious. India, which boasts o the

worlds second largest road network, has one o

the worst road saety records in the world.

    Realising this, feet operators, truck

    associations and truck manuacturers, have

made road saety their primary goal. Fleet

operators have initiated programmes to train

drivers on sae operation o trucks besides

measures, such as anti-lock braking systems

that the modern trucks by manuacturers like

BharatBenz boast o. Moreover, the advent o

    containerisation in Indian transportation has

already, to a large extent, eliminated accidents

that happen due to overloading o the trucks byregulating the load carried.

TECHNOLOGY TO KEEP YOU SAFEA signicant number o the large feet operators

    already employ GPS-based feet management

    systems which transmit important vehicle

inormation, such as the geographical location,

speed, uel economy etc, to a centralised

control room. These GPS systems also include

visual and audio alerts in case the driver is

overshooting the speed limit. Other advanced

    GPS applications

like Driver SaetyTool generate alertson unsae drivingevents

navigators provide the driver with alerts when

he is passing through a work zone and gives

him enough time to slow down well in advance.

Suresh Vernekar, Technical Director o Venus

Ethoxyethers, says, Our drivers are alwayson alert as they are aware that driving speed

is being monitored by us, thus, ensuring sae

transportation o hazardous chemicals by road."

Other feet operators like VRL Logistics, Siddhi

Vinayak Logistics, Vijay Lakshmi Transports, VV

Roadways and larger operators, such as DHL,

too use GPS-based systems to monitor drivers

    and feet movements.

    Siddhi Vinayak Logistics partnered with

Thrimble to develop a GPS-based tool or its

    2,750-vehicle-strong feet. With an advance

range o vehicles in our feet, the GPS system

helps us to monitor their movement to improve

utilisation and enhance per vehicle productivity,

Deepak Baid, Director, SVLL, says. Blue Dart

DHL, too, has adopted a similar system which

helps them identiy en route stoppage, delays

and other unoreseen circumstances and take

    corrective actions.

    Furthermore, advanced GPS applications called

driver saety tools (DSS) by Thrimble generate

alerts on unsae driving events like suddenacceleration, braking, harsh maneuvers, stretch

driving, night driving etc. This enables the

centralised control room to compile analytical

post-trip saety reports to help analyse driving

pattern and take corrective or preventive

measures to train drivers. It is also packed

with the ability to visualise driving data or 60

seconds beore an accident and 20 seconds

post an event to analyse what went wrong,

similar to the black box used in aircrats.

There are other eatures like alerts when a

vehicle leaves a Geo ence (goes o its pre-determined route),

inormation about any unscheduled spots etc.

These GPS applications, however, have not ound instant converts

among truck drivers, several o whom have rather predictably seen

these as a measure to curb their reedom. Its highly dicult to

make the drivers understand. For them, a GPS device or any kind

o tracking system is not looked at something which will make

them saer, but as something which is invented with the purpose

o tracking them, Nishant P Lapasia, Controller o Administration,

    Vijay Laxmi Transport, says.

Vijay Kumar Jairam, MD VV Roadways, agrees. Drivers are strictly

against being tracked via GPS. Even when it was installed, the

drivers try measures like putting a cloth (on the GPS unit) so that

their exact location is not known to us, Jairam says. The answer,

as most feet operators agree, lies in driver awareness.

SAFETY AWARENESSWith an eye on making the driver more aware, most feet operators

like TCI, Sri Ram Transport Company, Navata Road Transport

and Transporters Associations like Hyderabad Goods Transport

Organisation, and even truck manuacturers like BharatBenz, have

initiated driver training programmes. Sae driving tips and driving

discipline in all the cases is a very integral part o the curriculum.

In a bid to take this ur ther, logistics provider DIESL has launched

a nationwide road-saety training or truck drivers which aims to

cover 10,000 truck drivers over the next two years.

Fleet operators such as VV Roadways have initiated programmes

which also involve analysing a drivers tness levels and health

condition, apart rom his driving licence. VV Roadways takes this a

step orward and tests its drivers under an experienced driver by

sending them on a long distance driving test (1,000-2,000 km)

only ater passing it a recognition certicate is given to them.

Companies like Supreme Transport Organisation have hired

external instructors to train their drivers on sae driving. The

drivers are given proper training and saety tips by these

instructors. They are also instructed in important regulations

that they must abide by, said Pradeep Kumar rom the

    Supreme Transport.

CHECK POINTSWith an eye on addressing saety, VRL Logistics and operators

such as Best Roadways have set up check points across on most

national highways to monitor feet progress and ensure that the
