United College, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan and Tsinghua University, Beijing jointly organised a social service student exchange programme Pass-it-on: Service Learning Programme by United College and Cross-strait Tsinghua from 12 July to 11 August 2014. Thirty students from the three universities participated in experiential service learning in Hong Kong, Beijing and Taiwan. They visited local communities and gave a helping hand to grassroots families by providing voluntary services. (P.9)

In the election concluded on 29 July 2014, Mr Cheng Kar-shing, Mr Raymond K Cheung, Mrs Irene Y L Cheung, Mr David M H Fong, Dr Fong Yun-wah, Mr Hamilton H H Ho, Mr Ho Man-sum (Alumni Association Representative), Mr Lee Kwok-chung (Alumni Association Representative), Dr Solomon K N Lee, Dr Liu Lit-mo, Mr Shum Choi-sang, Professor Stephen H S Wong (Assembly of Fellows Representative), Mr Ricky W K Wong and Ms Lina Yan were re-elected Trustees of the Board. Professor Christopher H K Cheng (Assembly of Fellows Representative) was newly elected as Trustee of the Board. The term of these fifteen Trustees will be for three years from 1 August 2014 to 31 July 2017.

Mrs Pearl Kong Chen, the beloved wife of Professor Chen Tien-chi, former College Head of United College, passed away peacefully on 21 July 2014 at the age of 88. Mrs Chen was a recognised gourmet in Cantonese cuisine and made a significant contribution to the promotion of Cantonese cuisine and fine dining. During the headship of Professor Chen, he and Mrs Chen actively participated in student and alumni activities. Mrs Chen also organised a staff cooking class to strengthen the bond between the College and staff.
The memorial service for Mrs Chen was held on 10 August. United College and its members will always remember Mrs Chen and her support to United College. The College would like to express our deepest condolences to Professor Chen and his family.

A delegation led by Professor Jimmy C M Yu, College Head, attended the International Forum of Modern College System organised by Beihang University in Beijing on 15 July 2014, and exchanged views with Colleges in cross-strait Universities. United College also signed an agreement with Zhi Xing College of Beihang University, in order to strengthen the connection and cooperation between two Colleges and facilitate cultural exchange.

Appointment of Acting Head
With the support of the Environment and Conservation Fund, food waste composting machine is newly installed in college. Food waste generated is changed to useful material, such as organic fertilizer or fish food, so as to lessen pressure to our landfills. In the coming semester, the College Environment Committee plans to launch a Love Food campaign. It is hoped that reduce waste at source will solve the waste problem. Details will be announced in due course.

Applications are invited for the UC Shum Choi Sang Mentorship Programme 2014-2015. This Programme, jointly organised by United College and the United College Alumni Association, is sponsored by Mr Shum Choi-sang, former Chairman of the College Board of Trustees. The main purpose of the Programme is to foster a mentoring relationship between alumni and undergraduate students of the College. Through this mentoring, it is anticipated that students will be able to build up self-confidence, develop good ethics and communication skills, and enhance their knowledge beyond mere book-learning. The Programme will also recruit overseas mentors to provide support to students planning to participate in exchange programmes. Their contact and communications will be mainly by electronic means.

Digital Heritage Elite Athlete Scholarships
The Digital Heritage Elite Athlete Scholarships were established to provide opportunities for present and retired elite athletes who have made significant contributions to the sports world to study in United College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong while at the same time helping to promote sports participation and health awareness in the College. There are one to two awards, ranging from HK$30,000 to HK$60,000 each. 20142015 UC Shum Choi Sang Mentorship Programme 2014-2015

United College, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan and Tsinghua University, Beijing jointly organised a cross-strait social service student exchange programme named Pass-it-on: Service Learning Programme by United College and Cross-strait Tsinghua from 12 July to 11 August 2014. The Hong Kong part of this programme is sponsored by Dr Thomas Chen Si Yuan Social Service Programme.
The programme was divided into three parts. The first part of the programme was held in Hong Kong for ten days. Thirty students from the three participating universities, in five groups, were attached to different centres of The Spastics Association of Hong Kong (SAHK) to provide voluntary service to teenagers with special needs. Students also visited several social enterprises, conducted home visits to grassroots families living in sub-divided units, cubicle apartments and rooftop structures in Yau Ma Tei and Sham Shui Po area; while in the evening, they assisted People Service Centre to collect leftover food and then re-distribute it to needy people in Shek Kip Mei. More experiential activities include visiting community farm and joining Flag Day Fundraising.
The second part of the programme was held in Beijing, where students were arranged to perform various voluntary services: repainting walls for schools in Hebei, and improving water supply facilities in Shanxi.
The final part of the programme was in Taiwan. Students arrived in Fenglin, town in Hualien county, to learn more about the indigenous communities, and to organise a festive Demons Parade for local cultural promotion. The whole voluntary service programme completed on 11 August 2014.

Since its establishment in September 2005, United College Toastmasters Club (UCTMC) has strived to improve English speaking skills and standards among United College students. At Toastmasters meetings, members have the opportunities to learn by speaking in groups and working with others in a supportive environment. Members receive systematic trainings on impromptu speaking and public speaking through practice and feedback from their fellow club members. At present, more than30 United College students have registered as members of the Club. The Demonstration Meeting for recruiting new members will be held on Thursday, 18 September 2014 at 6:45 pm at Lecture Theatre C2, T C Cheng Building, United College. Experienced Toastmasters will attend the demo meeting and coach members on public speaking skills.

This programme is supported by Mr Fung Sun-kwan, and is designed to encourage students to take active and systematic steps to pursue whole person development through participation and involvement in academic as well as non-formal educational activities. The five core areas include ethical, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic development. Scores will be assigned to various activities under these areas, and participants will be awarded when the scoring reach specified points or above before graduation or twenty points in an individual academic year. All participants will receive an activity report certified by the College, and that could serve as reference for future career and academic pursuit.

Lockers in Room 109 of Tsang Shiu Tim Building are now available for non-residential students. Interested students should apply in person during office hours at the United College Dean of Students' Office on 2/F of Tsang Shiu Tim Building from 10 to 30 September 2014. Since only a limited number of lockers are available, application from residential students or students who have been assigned lockers in their respective departments will not be entertained except for special circumstances. For enquiries, please contact Mr Ron Wong at 3943 1288.
The loan regulations are as follows:
1) A deposit of HK$50 per locker is required. Applicants should pay the deposit via HSBC or Hang Seng Bank ATM to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (293-005005-001). Please bring along the ATM customer advice when submitting the application.
2) The lockers must be kept clean at all times and no valuables should be kept inside.
3) Students can decide the loan period of locker up to 31 May of graduation year. However, the College reserves the right to terminate the locker service under special circumstances and concerned students will be informed accordingly.
4) Before returning the locker to the College, students are responsible for cleaning the locker and returning the key in person to the College Dean of Students' Office. Deposit will be refunded by autopay.
5) Deposit will be forfeited if the locker key is lost. If the student wants to continue to use the locker, he/she has to re-apply and pay the deposit again.
6) Deposit will be forfeited for failure to return the locker keys upon expiry of the loan period. Items inside the locker will be disposed.

A two-room flat (around 650 ft2) at the United College Staff Residence is vacant for eligible married full-time staff of
United College to apply. Both the applicant and his/her spouse must not be entitled to housing benefits from the University or their respective employer. Applications will be assessed mainly based on the applicants' operational needs as well as his/her contribution to the United College.

The United College Alumni Day 2014 will be held on 25 October 2014 (Saturday) from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. All alumni are invited to join this annual reunion gathering to celebrate the College's 58th Anniversary, keep informed of the latest developments of the College, and to further strengthen the bond with their alma mater.
Each alumni may bring three family members to the event. The programme details and registration information will be released in late August 2014. Alumni can also refer to the registration form inserted with United Alumni Newsletter Issue 49 (September 2014) for details. To celebrate the 58th Anniversary of United College, the College will organise a
Reunion Dinner for Alumni graduated for 25 years and 35 years or above on 25 October 2014 (Saturday) from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Thomas H C Cheung Gymnasium, First Floor, Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building, United College. A group photo taking session will be held at 6:30 pm on 25 October.
The College will send invitation cards to Class of 1989 and Class of 1979 or before in late August 2014. For these two groups of alumni, please reserve your time and join this reunion gathering.
