In 1974, four Collegians wereorganized to provide oppor-tunities for student leadership,

service activities, and intramuralathletic competitions. As enroll-ment increased, the number ofCollegians increased; today thereare 42 Collegians, each withapproximately 100 members. Allclassifications (freshmen toseniors), academic majors, andbackgrounds blend to form aunique group of friends thatotherwise might never meet. EachCollegian elects officers, whodevelop organization, communi-cation, and leadership skills asthey plan collegian meetings.Games, skits, and devotionalmessages are incorporated in themeetings. They also coordinateoutings each semester.

All Collegians are called by Greekletters and have their own name, colors, andmascot. For “Greek Rush” in the fall semester, members design and construct colorful paradefloats and exhibit booths to recruit new members.New students are always welcomed into aCollegian and there is no hazing.

After choosing a Collegian, the participation levelis up to each student. Members can compete in anumber of major and minor sports, like soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, flag football, swimming, tennis, wrestling, table tennis, andchess. In addition, men’s Collegians sponsorcheerleading squads that cheer at intramuralsports events.

Joining a Collegian is a great way to catch the spiritof student life.

Message—Dr. Jim SchettlerThere are three kinds of days in the

life of a believer: building days, battling days, and banner days. This is abanner day to celebrate what God hasdone with a group of His children. Thisday His banner is raised. Let everythingthat has breath praise His name! We will

aged us, and sharpened us for Hisservice. We sing glory to the God whonever slumbers and who does not eventake naps. He knows the where, thewhat, the how, the when, and the why ofevery aspect of our lives.

Family of God, today rejoice! PraiseHim this day for all His benefits, for allHis blessings: the blessing of travelingmercies over the years going to and fromcollege, and the blessing of good healthand of a sound mind. Give Him glory, freshmen, He corrected you in love, Hecomforted you with peace, He changedyou for good. Sophomores, rejoice inHim; for those chapel messages, thosecare packages, those constant remindersof His love every day. Juniors, sing toHim with a song of gladness, gladnessfor your growth in Him, gladness foryour vision of Him, gladness for onlyone more year to go. Exalt Him most ofall, seniors, exalt Him above any otherrelationship, lift Him higher than anyother priority. As you leave this place,

not be slack to thank Him for His Word—that Word that guides us like a map, thatWord that feeds us like a meal, that Wordthat protects us like a shield. We willforever praise Him for being merciful. Wedeserved the lake of fire in hell, and Hegave us the golden streets of heaven. His

mercy endureth to all generations.

We have come from all over theglobe to praise the God of allgrace, the Sovereign supreme forbeing faithful with His promisesand liberal with His mercy. Thisday we reflect over all Hisgoodness and rejoice in Hismarvelous plan for all of ourlives. Praise Him for listening tothe prayers we have cried out.Praise Him for patiently moldingus into something greater thanwe were. Praise Him for provid-ing teachers and friends whoprepared us, taught us, encour-

make your Savior, Jesus Christ, not justpresent in your life or even prominent inyour life, but may He be pre-eminent.Never settle for anything less than God’svery best for your life.

Special guests, family members, students, faculty, administration, let us all be stilland know that He is God. The theory ofevolution is not taught here on thiscampus as a science, but as a myth, conjured up in the darkened soul ofman’s depravity to escape the responsi-bility to a Holy God.

We rejoice today in a God who hasfearfully and wonderfully created us witha purpose; to shine forth His glory. Wedo not accept here the belief thatabortion is a humane way of birthcontrol or that anybody has the right tochoose to kill a baby in what should bethe safest place on earth, a mother’swomb. We believe God knew us beforethe foundation of the earth and had adesign for us to complete. We sing praisetoday. We leap for joy in our hearts that

Nehemiah Spencer (Ala.) and Eunice Thiessen (Canada) receivedthe Presidential Citation of Merit, PCC’s highest honor for

representing several different flags, butpraise His Holy name, we rejoice todayall under one banner, the banner of thecross. We have many different customs, languages, and ideas represented here, but praise His name, we have one Lord, one faith, one birth.

The saddest, sorriest person here today isthe one without thanksgiving in hisheart. The most tragic situation in thisauditorium is the soul without joy in his

heart and praiseon his lips. Isthere angertoday? Doesbitterness dwelldeep inside?Does your justicesystem fight with

God’s sovereign will? Do envy andjealousy control your passions? Go tothe river of peace and toss all your care, hurts, and sorrows away, then run backto the altar of praise and shout with aglad voice, “God reigns!” Cry with allyour heart, “God is good, His mercy iseverlasting, His grace is sufficient, Hispresence is all I need.” For the timebeing, the battles are not raging, the

the God who created us has protected, provided, and planned for us all the wayfrom our mother’s womb.

We do not allow a humanistic view of lifeto be practiced by our students. Thisteaches if it feels good, go ahead and doit. I deserve a break today, everybodyelse is doing it. We believe that Godshould direct our steps by His Word inour conscience and that true worshipand praise to Him is a surrendered willin obedience towhatever Hewants.

Yes, we this daydesire to lift upand praise theLord. Give Himglory, moms and dads, for He has beenfaithful to you. Rejoice in the child Godhas blessed you with. Praise Him for ason or daughter who is graduating today.Foreign students, rejoice! Praise Him fora place you could come and study aboutyour Lord in an environment wherethere was not hostility or prejudice.Praise Him for your nation. Be glad forwhat you have received here to ministerback home. Many students come here

building is not done, but today is a day offfrom work.

Today is a banner day, a day of praise! Letthe joy of the Lord be your strength onthis day. May every one of us stop and say,“Thank You, Lord.” From the depth of ourheart to the roof of our mouth, we praisethe Son of God. What one thing can wegive the King of Kings? What gift can webring for the Lord of Lords, who has doneso much for us? We come today under theone banner that He will accept and that

The personality, character, andphilosophy of education atPensacola Christian College is

unlike other institutions. It was foundedwith the purpose of training young menand women for a life of service to the LordJesus Christ. During convocation, graduates shared these thoughts:

Esther Slater, (D.C.)—history/English“I came to PCC for a Christian education.

By combining Christianphilosophy with traditionalteaching methods, PCCprovided me with adistinctly differenteducation, giving me adecided advantage over

thousands of graduate school applicants. Iwill be attending Notre Dame Law Schoolon a full scholarship this fall, and I believe Iwill be a step ahead of my fellow studentsbecause of the education I received atPensacola Christian College.”

Raquel Gomez, (N.J.)—premed “PCC’sfaculty goes beyond the call of duty. Myteachers did not just teach; they showed

Christ’s love to me. My Bible teachershelped me become a better Christian asthey gave me good advice and prayed with

me for my family. Mypremed advisor helped meprepare for the MCAT examand for my medical schoolinterviews. The entirechemistry department

prayed for my dad as he went throughsurgery last semester. As I attend the MDprogram at Robert Wood Johnson MedicalSchool, I will cherish the memories of thefaculty here at PCC.”

Barry Moyer, (Pa.)—criminal justice “Thehighlight of my academic career was aninternship with the United States SecretService last summer. I gained experience in

counterfeit detection, fraudinvestigation, andprotection details. I ampresently being consideredfor a position as an officerwith the Secret Service.

Because of the excellent education Ireceived in PCC’s criminal justice programand the practical experience I gained

through my internship, I feel prepared forwhatever the Lord has for me in the future.”

Matt Waliszek, (Maine)—math andhistory education “My math and scienceclasses have shown me how God hasintricately woven His creation together,

and I look forward toteaching the handiwork ofGod in my own classroomin a Christian school. In allmy classes, including thosein my history major,

I was not just given man’s theories, butwas taught biblical principles as well astraditional, common-sense practices froma Christian perspective. PCC is unique inits excellent teacher training, and I amthankful for its standards.”

PCC’s administration, faculty, and staffare dedicated to training young people toserve God. Students graduate with a solidChristian foundation for serving the Lordin any profession. Many members of theclass of 2000 will be continuing theireducation at graduate schools.

Success is an elusive word, oftendiscussed but seldom defined. It is aword that is only used once in the

Bible. According to Josh. 1:8, success ispredicated upon adherence to the principlesof God’s Word. In a culture that measuressuccess by the benchmarks of prestige, possessions, and power, it was refreshing toreceive the following letter from the parentof a PCC student.

“It is truly a blessing to have a wonderfulChristian College like PCC for our son.Your affordable tuition has made collegeless of a financial burden. Your dedicationto academic excellence has assured us thatour son will have the necessary back-ground and skills to succeed in thebusiness world. Your Bible-basedteachings and high standards haveassured us that his faith will have theopportunity to be strengthened duringhis college days. God has blessed PCC,and PCC is a great blessing to Christianfamilies.”

This mother chose some significant wordsfor her letter including “dedication,” “skills,”“Bible-based teachings,” “high standards,”“faith,” and most important of all “God.”She knew the true ingredients whichcomprise the formula for Biblical success.

It is not a coincidence that these words aredescriptive of the student life, philosophy, and purpose of PCC. We exist as aninstitution to train young people to besuccessful for God. We believe that is alsothe heartbeat of many parents across ournation. We trust that you will prayerfullyconsider sending your children to PCCwhere we can work together to achieve thisgoal.

“This book of the law shall not depart out ofthy mouth . . . for then thou shalt make thyway prosperous and then thou shalt havegood success.” Josh. 1:8.

At the age of 26, Alexis deTocqueville, a famous Frenchstatesman, historian, andsocial philosopher, visitedAmerica in the 1830’s todiscover what made her sogreat. He studied Americafrom rural to urban, coastlineto inland, and published hisobservations in a classic two-volume work, Democracy inAmerica. Here is an excerptfrom his work:

“I sought for the key to thegreatness and genius ofAmerica in her harbors; . . .and boundless forests; in herrich mines . . . and institu-tions of learning. I sought forit in her democratic congressand in her matchlessConstitution. Not untilI went into the churches ofAmerica and heard herpulpits flame with right-eousness did I understandthe secret of her genius andpower.”

“America is great becauseAmerica is good, and ifAmerica ever ceases to begood, America will cease tobe great. The safeguard ofmorality is religion, andmorality is the best securityof law as well as the surestpledge of freedom.”
