PecuniaEnglish manual

I. Goal of the GameThe players are all clerics, living in a dark time. You must gather the poor lambs searching for salvation (lamb cards), and line them up before you. Use the effects of the people you have gathered, and the events that will happen (Worship, Starvation, Sabat, Raid) and be the one to earn the most fame(points)!

II Contents* 57 Lamb cards of 11 types

6 Missionary5 Farmers6 Mercenaries3 Grave Robbers5 Inquisitors6 Clowns5 Hunters4 Clerics6 Meat traders5 Witches6 Slaves

* 4 Event boardsWorship, Starvation, Sabbat, Raid

* 16 Event chips* 4 sheep pawns* 1 Pilgrim pawn* 1 Starting player card* 216 points worth in point chips

II – 1. The lamb cards(A) Card name / art – there are 11 different types(B) Traits

Four different numbers. From top to bottom, they mean Faith, Food, Festival and Strength; these numbers correspond to the Worship, Starvation, Sabbat and Raid event boards respectively, and are important when these events occur.(C) Special effect(D) Colour – This decides which event this card will accelerate.

Page 2: Pecunia en Rules

II – 2. Event boards(A) Event name – there are four different types(B) Event effect – This happens when the event occurs(C) Card places – This is where Lamb cards are placed on this board; always from place #1 and up.(D) Sheep pawn place – Where you place the sheep pawn

III. PreparationsSetting up the event boards* Set up the event boards so that each board is a side in a common square. The numbers 1 2 3 on the board should face outside of the square. You can place the boards in any configuration, but placing them like the figure below is recommended until for your first couple of games.* Place all the event chips face down in the middle of the square. This is the chip bank.* Place one sheep pawn on each event board. Place the Pilgrim on the Worship board.

Setting up the lamb cards* First, all players get a Cleric card, which represents themselves, and place it face down before them. This card is now waiting. Keep it separate from your hand and thecard line of “gained” cards that you will gradually build up during the game. Any non-used Clerics should go back to the box.* In a 2 or 3 player game, take out 1 each of Missionary, Mercenary, Meat Trader, Clown and Slave (the cards that there are 6 of) and put back in the box. They’re not used in the game.* Shuffle the rest of the lamb cards, and deal 5 face down to each player so that they form a line of 5 cards in front of each player. For rules purposes these cards are called players’ hands. A player may always look at the cards in his hand, but may never change the order.

Setting up the point chips* Put the point chips, sorted after points, close enough but don’t mix them together with the event chips.

This concludes the preparations. The player who most recently visited a temple, shrine or church is the starting player, and takes the start player card.

IV Flow of the gameThis game is divided into a number of rounds, and each round has three phases.

Page 3: Pecunia en Rules

The three phases are always taken in order:1. Card play phase2. Event phase3. Renew cardsDepending on how the game is played, the number of rounds will vary. The player who has most points when the game ends wins the game.

IV – 1. Card play phaseIn the card play phase, players will take turns playing cards, from the start player andclockwise around the table, until everyone has retired from the phase. On a player’s turn, he can take one of the following two actions:[A] Play the leftmost card in his hand* He plays the leftmost card in his hand onto an event board of his choice. However, he may not play a card on a board without a sheep pawn, or on a board that already has 3 cards on it.* The card should be placed on the lowest vacant number on the corresponding board.* This action can obviously not be taken if the player has no cards in hand, or when there is no free board to play on.[B] Retire from the phase by gaining all cards from one of the boards* Choose one event board that has at least 1 card, and do the following:1) Take the sheep pawn from the board and place before you.2) Take all the cards played on the event board, and add to your line of gained cards. If you don’t have a line (like, at the start of the game), these cards will form the beginning of the line; if you already have a line, the new cards are added to the end of your line. The order in which they were placed on the event board must not be changed.3) Place one event chip on the event boards, according to the following rules:

Rules for placing event chips (3–4 players)If you were the first to retire from the card playing phase this roundPlace 2 event chips on the board you took cards from.Place 1 event chip on one of the two neighbouring boards. If you were the second to retire from the card playing phasePlace 1 event chip on the board you took cards from.Place 1 event chip on one of the two neighbouring boards. If you were the third to retire from the card playing phasePlace 1 event chip on the board you took cards from.If you were the fourth to retireYou don’t place any event chip.

Page 4: Pecunia en Rules

Note: You can skip putting chips on boards that already have 4 chips on them. Having more than 4 chips is the same as having 4, so it doesn’t matter.* Players who have retired from the card play phase (those who have a sheep pawn) won’t participate in the phase anymore. Their turns are skipped until the phase ends.* You can only retire if there is at least one eligible board (with at least 1 card on it).

When all players have retired* When all players have retired and gained cards, the card play phase ends.* The player who retired the last gets the start player card, and will be start player in the next round.

In a 3 player game, one of the event boards will be left with cards on it. These cards are left where they are. So the next round will begin with a board with cards already on it.

IV – 2. Event phase* Any board that has 4 or more event chips on them, will occur. Resolve the event, and then move the Pilgrim to that board.Note: Each event is explained in detail on the event details sheet.* If more than one board has 4 or more chips on them, they are resolved in order closest to the Pilgrim in clockwise direction; the board the Pilgrim is standing on being the first in line.* Points chips gained are to be face down.* After resolving an event, return its event chips to the bank.* When there are no boards with 4 or more event chips on them, the event phase ends.

Example of play[Worship]Has no sheep pawn, so you can’t place there.[Sabbat]Already has 3 cards, so you can’t place there.

Your line:Your hand:

This is your third turn during the card play phase. You check your hand, and would like to play your leftmost line card on the Worship board, but you can’t, because the cards there are already taken (it has no sheep pawn). You can’t play it on Sabbat

Page 5: Pecunia en Rules

either, as Sabbat is already full.So instead, you decide to retire. You can choose Starvation or Sabbat, but you don’t want the cards on Sabbat, so you take the two cards on Starvation, and take the sheep pawn from that board. You are the second to retire, so you place an event chipon Starvation, and one one neighbouring event; you choose Sabbat. Also, as you have a Witch in your line, its effect is applied, and you place one extra event chip on Sabbat and on Raid. The cards you gained are added to the end of your line, after the Cleric, in the same order as they are played on the Starvation board, that is Witch first, Mercenary second.

The remaining player play out the phase. The third player to retire took the cards from Sabbat, so one event chip was placed there. At the end of the phase, the play area looks like this:

Each player’s strength:You: 6Player A: 2Player B: 5Player C: 2

As “Raid” has 4 event chips on it, a Raid occurs. As the Raid effect says, everyone totals their strength in their line. All players except those with most strength (everyone but you), discards their front card in their line. Also, the players with the least strength (A and C) discard the next card in front, too. Then, the player with the single most strength (that is you), gain 6 points from the effect of the Mercenaries. Finally, the pilgrim is moved to the Raid board.

Note: Effects from lamb cards with the same name, stack. If you have several Mercenaries or Meat Traders, you gain the points they say for each of the cards. The same goes if you, for example, gain more than one Witch at the same time; you will do the event chip placing effect once per Witch card you gain.

IV – 3. Renew cards* From the start player and clockwise, players renew their hands until they have 5 cards in hand. If you already have 5 cards, you won’t renew.* When you renew your hand, you draw one card at a time, adding it to the right of your hand, so that they are lined up in the order you drew them. Remember you are

Page 6: Pecunia en Rules

now allowed to change the order of the cards in your hand.* When everyone has renewed their hand, return the sheep pawns to the boards.

If the deck runs out* The first time the deck of lamb cards is depleted when you’re to draw a card, shufflethe discards to form a new deck. After this point and until the game ends, the event phase is skipped (or rather, it changes timing – see below). The second time the deck is depleted when a card is to be drawn, the game ends immediately.

Changes in the event phase after the deck has been reshuffled once* Once the draw deck has been reshuffled once, the event phase changes timing behaviour for the remainder of the game.* Instead of taking place once all players have retired from the card play phase, thereis an “event phase” after every player’s turn; meaning that if any board ever has 4 or more event chips, it will trigger as soon as the current player has finished his turn.* Apart from that, it’s resolved in the same manner: resolve event – clear it from event chips – move Pilgrim. If several board have 4 or more event chips at the end ofa player’s turn, they’re resolved in Pilgrim clockwise order, like normal.* Once the insta-event phase is resolved, resume the card play phase.

V Game endThe second time the draw deck is empty and a card must be drawn, the game ends immediately.* Players count their point from the point chips, and adds to that 1 point per lamb card in their line. The player with the most points wins!* In case of a tie, the number of lamb cards in the line is the tie breaker (with the more cards being better). If that’s also a tie, then the tie remains.

VI Rules for 2 playersPecunia is mainly designed for 3–4 players, but can be played on 2 players. The rules are adjusted in the following way:* Player hands are 6 cards instead of 5.* To retire from the card play phase, you need to take 2 sheep pawns (the first time you take cards, you will remain in the card play phase).* The game ends the first time the deck is depleted and a card is to be ddrawn. The event phase never changed timing behaviour.* The rules for placing event chips changes to as follows:

Page 7: Pecunia en Rules

Rules for placing event chips (2 players)The first time someone takes a sheep pawnPlace 2 event chips on the board you took cards from.Place 1 event chip on the next board in clockwise direction. The second time someone takes a sheep pawnPlace 1 event chip on the board you took cards from.Place 1 event chip on the next board in clockwise direction. The third time someone takes a sheep pawnPlace 1 event chip on the board you took cards from.

Event effects are applied as written. (For example, during a Raid, the player with least Strength will discard his 2 front cards in his line.)

VII Tactical hintsPecunia is all about choosing when to retire from the card play phase, and deciding which board to play your lamb cards on. Unless you’re careful, you can lose half yourlambs from a badly timed event, and lose all opportunity to gain points.Take the following three things into consideration:* It’s usually risky to early on play a card onto an event of the same colour. Another player is likely to snatch it before you, and it will be highly beneficial for that player.* Always keep a good count of your Strength and amount of lamb cards in your line. During Raids and Sabbats, your front cards will be discarded unless you have enough.* Your cleric has 3 food, and without him, you’re likely to be heavily hurt during Starvation. Don’t settle for taking 1 card during the first round, or you’ll be in trouble, as your Cleric will be discarded too soon.

Neverending strife. The land is scorched… people die from famine and warBlood is needlessly shed over power, money, and the little food there is to share. In the endless tunnel of fear, people lose all hope, some voluntarily choose the narrow path, others turn their backs on our teachings, and run to heretic beliefs. But the Lord will forgive all, and give us new hope.

He is there, behind the words, behind the riches. No cattle is as bountiful as the lambs who can be used not only for their wool and milk, but also their meat and knowledge.

You lost lambs. I pray that the Lord will be with you.

The players are clerics, working for a better world. You must gather the poor lambs searching for salvation (lamb cards), and deliver them to salvation.Heretic witches, slaves… they are all here for your help.

It may happen, due to famine or war, or the occasional sacrifice during sabbath, that some lambs will lose their lives… but their spirits will be happy by the Lord’s side.
