North Saanich Councillor Craig Mearns agrees both sides of the debate over housing do not want to change the atmosphere and cul-ture of their community and says what Monday night’s public hear-ing will do is add diversity without a drastic impact.

Mayor Alice Finall says it’s unre-alistic to think that the housing developments proposed in North

Saanich will not change the community in a significant way.

Mearns and the council major-ity, Dunstan Browne, Ted Daly and Conny McBride led the vot-ing on seven bylaw and official community plan amendments which will allow increased resi-dential housing density in spe-cific locations within North Saanich. The result sent the large audience at the Bodine Hall at the Mary Winspear Centre into applause and cheering, as most of

the crowd was clearly in support of the change.

Monday’s public hearing was

well-attended and many speak-ers took to the microphone to express their opinions on coun-cil’s work to designate increased housing densities in two parts of the district — the Canora and Rideau road area and along McDonald Park Road. Both areas have development proposals pending, which could see the construction of up to 164 new

units on lots smaller than what has been the norm in North Saa-nich. The hearing Monday night

included phased development agreements for those projects. Council’s vote moved them closer to reality.

It’s a reality most of the people at the public hearing want to see happen. A majority of the speak-ers supported changes to the dis-trict’s regional context statement (RCS) and official community plan (OCP) as well as the development plans.

“Up to now, North Saanich has been exclusive,” Mearns said after the hearing. “The average selling price of the average house here is around $700,000, and that excludes people from the community.”

Some speakers Monday night, a few of them single parents who work in local industry, said they wanted homes that are more afford-able than that.

“This housing can be affordable for workers,” said one speaker, an employee of Viking Air who recently bought a home at Canora Mews. “I grew up in Sidney and had to move away to afford property. Now, I was able to get a decent house because of the new develop-ment here.”

It’s this example that the council majority holds up as housing that’s more afford-able in North Saanich — homes at a lower price point, not necessarily government subsidized housing, which Mearns said is a different issue.

“I’d like to see more afford-able homes,” he said, “but we (the municipality) are part of the problem as we’re charging high amenity fees for these units.”

He added it’s a compli-cated situation, as the dis-trict has stated it wants developers to pay for their impact on local infrastruc-ture.

Some of the speakers in support of the changes were involved directly or indi-rectly with development, including members of the Sidney North Saanich Indus-trial Group which has been urging Peninsula municipali-ties to find ways of accom-modating cheaper housing for their employees — most of whom live in the Western Communities and commute to and from work.

Overall, supporters of the changes included a mix of residents and younger peo-ple who are looking for the opportunity to live close to where they grew up or work — or be able to stay in North Saanich as they grow older and can no longer take care of their properties.

Opponents included mem-bers of North Saanich Com-munity Voices, who handed out information before the hearing and tried to mobi-

lize their camp to support Finall and councillors Celia Stock and Elsie McMurphy (McMurphy was not at the hearing), who have been fighting spot rezoning and the subsequent push for OCP change to allow for increased density.

“This is a major turning point in the history of North Saanich,” said Springfield Harrison, a long-time critic of council.

He called for a full OCP review — a wish that Mearns said could be granted after the election, should the incumbents win back their seats in November.

“If our group were to get re-elected,” he said, “we would have an OCP review. There are a number of issues that need to be dealt with.”

Mearns promised the pub-lic would be involved but the process would not take

the four years the last OCP took to be created. He added the final decision on an OCP would be the hands of coun-cil.

Finall said she was pleased so many people attended the hearing, adding there was a lot of effort made to get peo-ple to attend.

“I think some people felt that there wasn’t much point,” she said.

Some speakers at the hearing — on both sides of the issue — asked whether councillors were open to changing their minds. That didn’t happen.

Browne said he listened to people but was unmoved.

“I have heard nothing that would convince me oth-erwise,” he said. “This has gone on for nearly all of the time this council term. It’s time to make a decision.”

Coun. Conny McBride added minds on both sides of the council table were made up years ago, in a debate that has gone on for much longer.

“It’s important for North Saanich to move forward,” she said. “It’s important to have a diverse community.”

Coun. Ted Daly said not everyone in North Saanich is against this kind of change.

“We were elected to do a job,” Daly said, noting the issue goes back 11 or 12 years and has not been rushed by this council or any other. “It took this council two-and-a-half years. What we are doing is making this a more inclusive community and I’m proud of that.”

Even Finall and the minor-ity of councillors did not change their positions.

“I’m just not buying that any of these projects will lead to affordable or work-force housing,” the mayor said, indicating the lobby-ing efforts of local industrial businesses in recent years to seek housing for their many employees. “I continue to oppose this.”

Coun. Stock added she, too, remained opposed to the bylaw amendments.

“My reason hasn’t changed from the very beginning,” Stock said “I’m OK with some development, but this just feels like it’s too much.”

Both sides at the council

table tried to use tallies of letters, emails and speakers to back up their positions, but Finall agreed little of that mattered in the end for it all came down to how council would vote.

“I don’t see this as a defeat,” she said when asked. “It was in the cards, probably from the beginning of this term.”

Finall added she fought for what people wanted her to fight for. Now, she said she feels like there will be more development proposals com-ing forward and will continue to impact the community.

Mearns said the two proj-ects on the books will prob-ably gain some traction after Monday’s public hearing but said other developments will take time.

He added the two projects debated Monday probably won’t even break ground for some time. He added he doesn’t think others will come forward to council before the municipal elec-tion in November.

There are other proposals out there, he said. Including the two already on the books, there are a total of around 520 units being considered at the planning stages.

With an extra two weeks of unplanned summer vaca-tion after teachers in B.C. announced continuing job action, the Sidney Lions Food Bank is sending out a plea for any kind of kid-friendly sta-ples.

“We’ve just been going through the basic items like crazy,” explained the food bank’s administrator, Bev Elder.

“Because there was the extra two weeks with the kids at home we noticed an increase in usage then and haven’t been able to catch up,” she said, adding that she’s even seen a few teach-ers using the resource in order to feed their families.

Elder said the food bank normally sees a decline in donations this time of year but their client numbers also go down slightly in the summer so it’s usually not an issue. But not this year.

“We’re still seeing steady client numbers and we need the same amount of donations that we get at other times of year in order to keep up with the demand,” she explained.

A handful of fundraisers

over the last month have helped, she said, but cash donations always go to pur-chasing fresh food because of the food bank’s discount.

“We can stretch the dol-lar value farther so we tend to buy expensive items with cash donations like eggs, milk, cheese, meat and fresh fruit and vegetables,” she said.

Right now, Elder said the most important items the food bank is in need of is any-thing that can stretch a meal

or that can be used as snacks.“Things like canned veg,

soup, pasta, peanut butter, snacks for kids, cereal and also personal hygiene items like toilet paper, toothbrushes and toothpaste are all things we’re almost out of,” Elder said.

The easiest way to donate, she continued, is to simply drop by food or personal hygiene items to the food bank in Iroquois Park (just past the corner of Fifth Street

and Ocean Avenue) between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday to Friday.

“All the large grocery stores on the Saanich Peninsula also have donations bins which get emptied daily so people can drop food there as well,” she said.

Those who are unsure of what types of items to pur-chase can always call Elder at the food bank at 250-655-0679 or visit www.sidneyfoodbank.com to donate online.

Bev Elder of the Sidney Lions Food Bank is asking the public to lend a helping hand after a larger-than-normal demand by local families for the food bank’s help this summer.

The B.C. government finished the fiscal year in March with a surplus of $353 million by keep-ing overall spending growth below one per cent, accord-ing to audited public accounts released Tuesday.

It’s the first official surplus budget for B.C. since the 2008-09 recession, and a bigger surplus than what was promised by the B.C. Liberal government in last year’s election campaign.

Total program spending increased only 0.4 per cent during the year, which Finance Minister Mike de Jong credited mainly to a hiring freeze and restrictions on discretionary spending in ministries.

Health care spending rose $360 million over the previous year, which was more than $500 million lower than the forecast in the government’s post-elec-tion budget.

Education spending was up $299 million, while spending in natural resource ministries fell $337 million.

The province stayed in the black despite taxation revenues coming in $402 million less than the budget forecast. Natural resource revenues to the prov-ince exceeded forecasts by $109 million.

NDP finance critic Mike Farn-worth said the surplus budget was achieved “by picking the pockets of hard-working British Columbians” with higher fees and increases to B.C. Hydro,

ICBC and other rates.Farnworth estimated B.C. resi-

dents are paying an extra $300 million a year in such fees, not counting the latest increases to B.C. Hydro and Medical Services Plan rates.

De Jong noted that the prov-ince’s total debt continues to rise, topping $60.8 billion includ-ing debt of B.C. Hydro and other Crown agencies.

“We are borrowing to build instead of paying for the grocer-ies,” de Jong said of the addi-tional debt, which includes $3.2 billion for schools, highways, transit and hospitals.

B.C.’s debt stands at 18.2 per cent of gross domestic product, about half of the level of Ontario and the federal government’s debt-to-GDP ratio.

YOUR VIEW

I was appalled by the behaviour of many attendees at the public hearing on July 14 into the rezoning of several North Saanich properties. In spite of the mayor requesting no clapping or other expressions from the audience, we got every kind from supporters and opponents.

This can be, or is perhaps meant to be, very intimidating and is form of bullying.

A public hearing is not a popular-ity contest, decided by the amount of applause one side receives. It is part of the process of deciding new bylaws and should be conducted in a dignified and civilized fashion, so that council, who have to be open minded at this time, can hear the comments from the public — with-out being distracted by cat calls.

I found the whole environment in the hall extremely toxic and left as soon as I had spoken. I know we are passionate about our politics in North Saanich but that is no excuse to be disrespectful at such meet-ings.

J. DomanNorth Saanich

Even a glacier is faster Re: What’s the Rush (PNR

letters, July 4). Once again a writer who is opposed to any and all development projects in North Saanich has grossly distorted the facts in claiming that councilors Browne, Daly, McBride and Mearns by-passed the OCP and zoning

bylaws. Nothing could be further from the truth. All bylaws follow the same legislated path. There are no provisions for shortcuts without invalidating the process. The developments at McDonald Park and Reay Creek, received first and second readings months ago. It is common practice to receive the third reading after the public hearing and such practice is permitted by legislation. The claims made, that the four above mentioned councillors have somehow circumvented process are, frankly, libelous.

Mayor Finall, along with councilors Stock and McMurphy, have consistently voted against residential development and work very hard to be as obstructive as possible to the process, even going so far as lobbying the CRD. Thus, when McMurphy expressed her concern in council over pre-determined voting, many of us chuckled over the pot calling the kettle black.

I must point out the Reay Creek project has been with the district for a decade. The McDonald Park project has been waiting for six years. For comparison, a comprehensive master plan for Royal Bay, with more than 2,000 homes, moved from committee meetings to public hearing and third reading in less than five months.

It takes police Policing cyclists takes police

on the street. Will voters next fall ensure that proper funding is provided?

There certainly are some jerks on bicycles. Many of them are well-equipped and fancily dressed — in cars I’d call that the Audi mentality (a noticeable psychographic group recently).

At the same time, we should recognize that the cost of dangerous cycling is not the same as from dangerous driving. In most cases the bicyclist hurts only themselves, albeit with B.C.’s medical system all of us pay for treatment of those who live. I’ve stopped caring about them but would rather not get blood on my vehicle.

More police on the street would also stop dangerous vehicle drivers. The value of frequent police presence was proven by a dramatic reduction in accidents on the Malahat a few years ago. Without frequent presence the jerks know they have little risk of being caught, so they continue to put others at risk for their own convenience and psychological jollies.

There’s no excuse for such disrespect

Don’t wallow in density

After all is said and done, how new housing development in North Saanich plays out will be the telling of the tape for one of the community’s most divisive issues in recent history.

On Monday, North Saanich council voted into effect changes to its official community plan to allow for increased housing density in two specific areas of the district.

On the map, those zones look entirely appropriate for new growth — close to transit, near places of employment, infrastructure is for the most part in place and most importantly, it does not appear to be any different than existing housing right next door. As we have seen with the Canora Mews development, there is a demand for homes that cost significantly less than the North Saanich average (more than $800,000 over the last six months) and are suited to a changing demographic.

They do not appear to threaten existing properties or productive agricultural land in the district and meet a variety of housing needs expressed in our communities.

Looking ahead, hard feelings left over from this debate will carry into the November municipal election. Let us hope that those feelings do not blind the community to the fact that each elected official acted in what they saw were the best interests of their constituents. The politicians, too, must remember they are at the table by the grace of the electorate.

So, while this debate clearly demonstrated deep-seeded division not only on the council but in the community, it must be remembered there is a lot of hard work ahead.

Both sides on the housing issue have said they don’t want the character of North Saanich to change. While Monday’s outcome might be hard for some to swallow, to ensure that community goal is maintained, everyone must still use their voice and their vote to ensure that it does.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation had better not expect an imposed settlement to keep the beginning of the school year from being dis-rupted, Finance Minis-ter Mike de Jong said Tuesday.

Every other sector of the public service has been able to find agreements within the government’s balanced budget mandate, but the teachers’ union might be expecting a legislated settlement as has taken place in the past, de Jong said as he presented the pub-lic accounts that show B.C.’s budget balanced

as of this spring.“You cannot send

negotiators into a bargaining session with other public sec-tor workers, hammer out agreements that include very modest settlements, and then because another group decides to make a lit-tle more noise, provide more, because you are taking from one group in order to satisfy the demands of another within the context of a balanced budget,” de Jong said.

The BCTF strike for the last two weeks of June saved the pro-vincial treasury about $12 million a day, while year-end studies and exams were disrupted.

The two sides haven’t communicated since early July, when B.C. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kelleher said they are too far apart for mediation to be effective.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the BCTF has to reduce its demands, in particu-lar improved benefits he said represent an additional $225 million a year.

Those include increases to prepara-tion time, pregnancy and parental leave,

extended health and dental care and substi-tute teacher compensa-tion.

There are a lot of positive signs for small business in downtown Sidney, says Cliff McNeil-Smith.

The president of the Sidney Busi-ness Improvement Area Society (SBIAS), or Sidney BIA, says much of the feedback they are getting from owners is that business is improving — not to a point prior to 2008, but certainly better than last year.

“We are seeing changes to the posi-tive here,” he said in an interview.

There are still significant concerns, he continued, such as current store-front vacancy rates, but the trend so far over the late spring and summer is a lot more positive.

Donna Petrie, the BIA’s executive director and Town of Sidney event co-ordinator, added a strong indica-tor that the local economy is on the mend is with hotel numbers.

“They are doing well,” she said, “based on revenue per available rooms.”

Both McNeil-Smith and Petrie note that their local economy prognosis is based on mostly anecdotal evidence

from local businesses. McNeil-Smith said most private businesses don’t reveal with figures but their owners are keen to let the BIA know how they are doing, generally.

Sidney’s BIA, entering its second year of operation, was established to help market and promote down-town Sidney and all of the events and attractions that bring people to the area. Petrie calls that job delivering a complete experience to visitors and locals alike.

“The next phase of the BIA,” said McNeill-Smith, “once the brand iden-tity is established, is aspire to be more, to continue to improve this place.”

Part of that is working with Sid-ney’s mayor’s task force on down-town revitalization. The task force sent more than 40 recommendations to the BIA following a period of sur-veys and meetings. McNeil-Smith said the BIA executive and board are reviewing them. Asked if they were part of the BIA’s mandate, he said their primary job is to market Sidney and what’s already here.

Anything more would be up to the BIA membership to decide.

Business fortunes improving says BIA

SIDNEY — Peninsula Gallery will be hosting artist IceBear (Chris Johnson) next weekend for an “Art Encounter.”

IceBear will be at the gallery (100-2506 Bea-con Ave.) from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, to meet art lovers and demonstrate his technique on hand detailing of prints.

IceBear’s work spans the gamut from repre-sentational landscapes to contemporary three-dimensional graphic sculptures.

“His First Nations ancestry is the inspi-ration and foundation for the thoughtful and often deeply spiritual undercurrent to each piece,” said Peninsula Gallery owner Vivian Chen.

IceBear worked hard last summer and fall to give life back to two murals he created in Sidney almost two decades ago, one near the intersection of Res-thaven Drive and Bea-con Avenue and one on First Street in Sidney.

THE ARTS

More visitors and more donations in June

SIDNEY — More than 1,100 visitors went through the doors of the Sidney Museum on Bea-con Avenue in June.

Peter Wainwright, museum executive direc-tor, says for the first time they recorded visitors through their annual Best Loved Dolls of the Past 100 Years exhibit.

“It has proven to be very popular,” he said. “The museum recorded 1,179 visi-tors in June. This compares with an aver-age of 477 people for June from 2003 to 2013.”

Donations at the door were also up significantly — $1,876 compared with a previous June average of $457. Wainwright added visitors were 70 per cent local and 39 per cent from other parts of Greater Victoria. Those numbers, he clari-fied, do not include the LEGO exhibit during Family Day.

“A typical month sees about 20 per cent of visitors coming from Greater Victoria other than the Penin-sula,” he added.

That jumps to 37 per cent for the LEGO display.“From this we conclude that the exhibit is

drawing people from throughout Greater Victoria and farther,” said Wainwright. “As an example, a doll collectors’ club from Nanaimo organized a three-car convoy to bring its members to see the exhibit.”

The Museum, he continued, is already making plans for another doll exhibit in 2015, and hope-fully an ongoing one into the foreseeable future.

“Several doll collectors’ clubs have expressed interest in contributing to the show,” he said. “There has also been some interest in showing a collection of Japanese dolls from our sister

city, Niimi. There does not appear to be any shortage of material so we expect that each year will see a significantly different exhibit.”

The Sidney Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Its current doll exhibit runs to the end of July. In August, there will be a display featuring the theme of

the 100th anniversary of the Sidney Volun-teer Fire Department.

Ford parties on with fun new FiestaTORONTO: It’s a lovely day on the backcountry roads of suburban Ontar-io, just west of Toronto, chosen to show off this ‘special’ version of the popular Ford Fiesta. It’s an enjoyable drive through a pretty landscape, dotted with quaint farms, moving along at a decent speed. Easy to forget the Fiesta is powered by Ford’s smallest engine, the 1.0L EcoBoost. With three-cylinders, an output of 123 horses and peak torque of 125 lb-ft., it’s not something to scoff at. Furthermore, there’s an overboost feature that will give you access to 148 lb-ft of torque for up to 15 seconds. Furthermore, Ford touts it as having the best highway fuel economy in its class. It uses an estimated 4.3L/100km on the highway and 6.2L/100km in the city. Along with this new engine, there are also a few tweaks for the 2014 model year. You’ll find new headlamps with chrome accents, a new decklid and tail lamps. Inside, there are new steering wheel controls, a new door design, a new cluster design and additional chrome accents on the door handles and throughout. Not to mention the

additional cupholder in the rear!Complete with a new interior and exterior look, the Fiesta certainly adds life to the party. It exudes pep and still has a lively personality. That can be attributed to a 5-speed manual trans-mission. With the 5-speed manual, the gear throws felt a little long, but then again, we’re not talking about the ST, its the Fiesta’s performance-ori-ented sibling. Noteworthy: the cabin stays serene even at highway speeds; when you’re cruising in fifth.

Keeping unwanted noise out of the car’s interior is always high on the priority list for subcompacts. It has a roomy trunk, accommodating up to 422L behind the second row in the hatchback.Of the two body styles offered – there’s a sedan or 5-door – I fancy the hatch-back. I also think its styling has a little more flare. As for handling, we had the chance to put it through an autocross-style track to demonstrate its abilities in tighter, higher speed turns. While many people probably won’t drive the Fiesta like this – even though it’s quite fun – it can handle its share of bends without

faltering. Matched with its electric power-assisted steering, you have a good amount of steering feel whether driving at high or low speeds. The engine is its strongpoint but it’s not just a one-trick pony. I like the interior a lot. The steering wheel is soft to the touch and I like that you can control various functions like the audio, Bluetooth, or cruise control from it. The centre stack has charm, too. Atop sits a colour display, followed by Ford’s infotainment system, followed by the climate con-trols. It’s hard to get lost in its setup, and the buttons are clearly marked with large writing. Equipping the Fiesta with the 1.0L en-

gine has a $1,295 premium. What that gives you is the extra bit of power and the fuel economy savings. This engine can only be outfitted on the SE trim, which has a starting MSRP of $14,866. However, it’s available on both the sedan and hatchback models.Overall, the Ford Fiesta 1.0L has its benefits. A snappy engine, a great look and a comfortable ride quality. Whether you just drive it around the city or beyond, the Fiesta one-litre is a sturdy road companion with impressive fuel economy. Visit www.ford.ca for more information.

Keith Morgan

Even if you squint while looking at the Hybrid gas-electric car on your driveway, you likely have a hard time imagining it is anything like an F1 racecar. However, the new advanced hybrid technology at play in this 2014 season means that Formula 1 has never been closer to your driveway. The car power units are 1600cc tur-bocharged V6 engines with direct fuel injection. They have to complete each race with 35 per cent less fuel, with a maximum fuel load of 100kg (not litres) and the fuel flow is restricted to 100 kg/hour. That would mean your favourite driver would bow out half way through without further engineer-ing help.In addition, the power units have two electric motors, one linked directly to the turbocharger, the other working in the same way that the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) used to do. The result is a combined maximum power output of around 760bhp, which is similar to the output of the V8 cars of last year.It is a certainty that the rapid-fire experimentation that is going on in F1 will result in improvements to our everyday cars. That’s the beauty of this highly competitive sport that is so geared to winning. Changes come faster because there’s no chance to undertake testing that takes ages

under normal testing.Last year, when I visit-ed the Monaco Grand Prix as a guest of the Infiniti-Red Bull F1 race team, I chatted to Infiniti engineers who marvelled at the pace of improvement. Said one Infiniti engineer: “They do things so much more quickly than we can do under normal development processes because they have to. And the changes they make are so thoroughly tested on the track. It points two ways: sometimes what they do shows us the way to go but also the way not to go!”Hong Kong-based Infiniti has made a very shrewd move in tying itself to the F1 team and particularly the reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. The German racer is the marque’s Director of Performance. His association goes far beyond the typical celebrity endorsement, for he takes on a literal hands-on-the-wheel approach to his role. He has played a significant role in the development of the compact Q30, which should surface later next year. He has already left his mark on the all-new Infiniti Q50 sport sedan and sports car enthusiasts pray a

high-powered ‘Eau Rouge’ version of the car will hit the production line. Yours truly, will join the team next month at the Belgian Grand Prix, at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, location of the famous ‘Eau Rouge’ corner. We will drive Q50s from the south of England, through the Euro Tunnel and on to Spa.Immediately prior to the race week-end, yours truly will join international journalists in a behind-the-scenes visit to the team’s UK base in Milton Keynes. There we will learn something about the fast track work they carry out on the F1 cars. I suspect we will get a peek at what is in store for that car on your driveway and you will read about it here.

What do you get when you combine the world’s best-sell-ing zero emission vehicle with innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt? Answer: a Nissan LEAF electric vehicle that might just be “the world’s cleanest car.”Created to demonstrate its potential use in future pro-duction vehicles, this LEAF’s exterior was treated with a specially engineered paint that is designed to repel water and oils. The “self-cleaning” paint, called Ultra-Ever Dry, creates a protective layer of air between the paint and environment, effectively stopping standing water and road spray from creating dirty marks on the LEAF’s surface.

Drives-U-Crazy ... Stop signsStop signs mean stop now, not eventually. There’s little that’s more scary when you are moving briskly along a major city arterial route than to be confronted suddenly by a car rolling at a clip over a stop line from a side road on the right. The driver knows whether the car is going to stop before entering the highway. I don’t because I’m not a mind reader. What drives-u-crazy?

When the Porsche Cayenne was introduced, I ques-

tioned why the iconic sports car maker would build a grocery-getting SUV.Boy was I ever wrong.

Porsche not only suc-cessfully introduced the Cayenne, it went on to become its best-selling

vehicle and – wait for it – I even bought one! So, with the latest introduction of a smaller SUV called Macan,

Good looking, high performer tops the price list, toothere is less fanfare around the fact that it actually exists and more excitement about how it performs. The bigger question is with so many small luxury SUVs entering the market, is the Macan worth the $54,300 to get a base model or $82,200 for the turbo?

Looks The Macan uses same platform as the Audi Q5, a Volkswagen Group sibling, but features an entirely different body shell and engine options. The most striking design element is the wide hood that folds over the side of the front fenders, making a seamless, wide stance that is impressive. The hood actually has cutouts for the headlamps and weighs only 17kg. “Side Blades” decorate the lower body of the Macan and can be ordered in black, a matching body colour or carbon fibre. The back end of the Macan is particularly sleek and tidy, the taillights wrap around from the side and into the tailgate with precession. It’s the lack of a trunk release that makes the design so pleasing. Instead, a small button on the base of the windshield wiper that electronically re-leases the power tailgate. Below the tailgate four exhaust tips tell passersby that this is a powerful machine.

Inside What the Macan has over the Q5 is a level of interior refinement that is almost unmatched in the car business. It’s finished with fine leather

and a simple design that makes interacting with this SUV a joy. There are several drawbacks though. The cargo area is long but the rake of the rear window limits taking larger objects inside the car. The back seat I find too small for a family of four people. Since I own a Cayenne, I have a great perspective on the amount of room this Macan offers. Legroom is obviously tighter, headroom is just okay, it is the lack of space side-to-side that I find limiting. The Cayenne is a perfect family choice, the Macan I believe is suited for a single person or active professional couple. Not to say it couldn’t be use for family duty, it just wouldn’t be my choice.

Drive The launch of the Macan in Cali-fornia provided a route that carved through the mountains outside of Los Angeles on the way to Willow Springs racetrack. Porsche always holds its events at a racecourse, proof that they believe they have something in this new SUV. There might be some confusion surrounding the naming of this car. Both the Macan S and Macan Turbo come fitted with a V6 turbo. The base model is a 3.0L V6 with 340hp. The “Turbo” gets a larger 3.6L V6 with a higher output turbocharger and is rated at 400hp. The base model would be my choice. Driv-ing in back country roads the power was fantastic and the additional money could be spent upgrad-

ing the suspension from the base steel springs to steel with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) that allows the driver to set the firmness of the ride. This upgrade was noticeable on the track. The Turbo comes standard with this setup but the added power and expense was only really noticeable when the Macan was pushed very hard around the racetrack. For regular commuting the S is just fine.

Verdict I love the way the Macan looks, the interior is wonderful and the handling can be very sporty if the buyer chooses. Here is the issue: the Macan can get very expensive in a hurry. All of the cars I drove in California were over $100,000 with features like PASM, additional air suspension and sport-chro-no settings for the 7-speed duel clutch automatic. When I configure a base S with the features I would want like navigation, PASM, front and rear parking sensors, bigger wheels, Bose stereo and a few other odds and ends, comes to almost $75,000, never mind the $82,200 starting price of the Turbo. Having recently driven the spectacular Audi SQ5, from which this car is based, that 354hp rocket is a bargain at $60,000, almost fully equipped. I like the Macan, and they will sell every one to people who want to have the latest, but I think the pricing structure is a bit over the top. [email protected]

Peninsula athletes headed for B.C. Summer GamesDevon MacKenzieNews staff

Over a dozen young athletes from the Saanich Peninsula are headed to the B.C. Sum-mer Games which kick off in Nanaimo on Thursday.

Finn Battersby, an athlete with Peninsula Track and Field Club, is headed to the games with two other Pen Track members, Ben Sammons and Brennan Hop-kins, to com-pete against athletes from all over the province.

“I know I’m definitely looking forward to heading there,” said Bat-tersby, who competes in his event, the 1500m steeplechase, on Saturday.

“A highlight will be the fact that a lot of us will be compet-ing as a team for the first time rather than competing against each other which will be awe-some.”

Battersby, who starts Grade 9 at Parkland Secondary in Sep-tember, was a wild card in the games qualifications, meaning he was selected after qualifica-tions based on his qualifying placements and age.

“I’m turning 14 so to qualify as a younger athlete is great,” he said.

S a m m o n s will be com-peting in the p e n t a t h l o n event and Hopkins will take on the 100m hurdles.

Other ath-letes from the Saanich Peninsula will compete in various events

over the week-end including basketball, row-ing, lacrosse, softball, rugby and swimming.

The games wrap up on Sun-day, July 20. For an updated list of results visit www.bcgames.org.

Panthers hire new bench bossDevon MacKenzieNews staff

The Peninsula Panthers have hired a new head coach.

Grant Sjerven, a Saanich Peninsula res-ident and past Panthers player will take over the coaching helm for the Junior B hockey team beginning Sept. 5.

“We wanted to take our time and be patient in our search for a new Head Coach and I think that the wait was well worth it,” said Panthers’ owner and head of hockey operations, Pete Zubersky.

“We will have a lot of local kids on the team this coming season and we wanted a local coach, someone who will be excited to be part of what we have always tried to do out here on the Peninsula which is be a part of our great com-munity,” he said.

Sjerven played goal  for the club in the 1988/89 season. Prior to that, he played with Peninsula Minor Hockey. Later in his career, he moved on to playing with the B.C. Hockey League in Merritt and Penticton and then attended St. Cloud State Col-lege where he played three years in the Western

Collegiate Hockey Assocition.  From there Sjerven spent 11 years in

professional hockey with stops in Rich-mond, Chicago, Houston, Manchester, Sheffield, Odessa and Wichita.

He finished his playing days during the 2004/05 season as an emergency cal-lup with the Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL.

“Grant and I met on Canada Day for a coffee and discussed the opportu-nity coming in as the head coach,” said Zubersky.

“As an organization we are very happy to move forward with Grant pulling on the rope with us.

“Community is an important word in our business plan and with Grant being a local and well-known face out here, it’s an obvious fit.”

Zubersky said assistant coaches for the team haven’t yet been nailed down for the 2014/15 season. Brian Pass-more, the past Panthers head coach, will be taking on

coaching duties for the Westshore [email protected]

NORTH SAANICH — The Peninsula Base-ball and Softball Asso-ciation hosts the B.C. Minor baseball Mos-quito A provincials Aug. 1 to 3.

Featuring the top 2004-born baseball players in B.C., the tournament will be played at Rotary Park in North Saanich. Three Island teams, including the Victoria Red Eagles, will join Kamloops and six Lower Mainland teams to determine the province’s top team.

“We are very pleased to have placed five PBSA players on this roster of 13 Greater Vic-toria boys,” said head coach Dave Swinton, who also doubles as vice-president of Junior Baseball at PBSA.

“This reinforces our belief that we are run-ning a top-rate devel-opmental program at PBSA and comes on the heels of the all-PBSA eight-year-old team placing second in its Island championships that featured 13 teams from Campbell River south.”

“The Victoria Red Eagles will have played a six-week, 20-game exhibition and tour-nament schedule in preparation for these provincial champion-ships,” he said.

Recently returned from a successful annual Valley of Cham-

pions tournament in Kelowna, “the boys had an exceptional week-end going 5-0 in captur-ing the gold medal. This team seems to be a spe-cial group of boys and it’s our hope to post the six wins required in three days to win the provincial gold.”

The round-robin por-tion of the tournament Aug. 1 and 2 will see two games at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The Red Eagles play at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Day 1 and 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Day 2.

The top two in each pool will advance to the Aug. 3 semi-finals. Win-ners play later that day

What will set your home apart from amongst the many houses for sale in the local market?

That’s a question Carrell-Ayne Whalen will ask her clients after they’ve sought her out to help stage their home while the for sale sign is posted outside.

Whalen owns Simply Staged To Sell (www.simplystagedtosell.ca), based out of her own home in Sid-ney.

Her job is to assist people with a makeover of their homes once they are on the market.

Staging rooms for show is a lot dif-ferent than interior decorating, she says, and serves a much different purpose.

“Staging is designed to help sell a home,” she explains. “It removes those extreme personal touches and decor (such as a sword collection mounted on a wall) that can distract potential buyers.”

The goal, she continues, is to get people to see how the home looks when it’s lived-in and how their own furniture will look in the same space.

Interior decorating, Whalen adds is the act of putting a personal touch on a home’s decor — generally what happens after someone moves in. That’s the main difference between

the two styles.Whalen says she works with her

clients on staging the main rooms — living, dining, kitchen and master bedroom. The rest must be neat and tidy, she adds. Those are the rooms where potential buyers do the most visualizing of how their new home might look.

To make it happen, Whalen works with what people have and within their budgets, rather than simply opting for rental furniture. Often

that’s out of reach for seniors and others who do not have those kind of resources or storage space for their own stuff. The key, in the end, is to create a welcoming space.

With a background in personal shopping for major department stores and 15 years in the antique business, Whalen has some unique approaches to staging homes.

“I have that experience in antiques but more importantly, I have a busi-ness background.

“My dad was a follower of the Dale Carnegie method and always told me no matter what I do in life, make sure other people are as important as you are. Really listen. Only then can you help others.”

At work in the field for four years, Whalen approaches each home with a main focus: accentuate the posi-tive and camouflage the negative. Then look to the details to help set a room, and a house, apart from the rest.
