11th ANNUAL DIG WITH THE EXPERTS AND SPECIAL EVENT DAY ON MAY 16TH

Many excellent complete trilobites, some multiples on a slab, were collected during the 2014 ‘Dig with Experts’ event. The experts will excavate an area for this program and show you how to split the shale to discover some complete specimens. Although a large complete trilobite is the goal, there are other unique fossils besides trilobites that can be found at Penn Dixie. Cephalopods, carbonized wood, fish remains, crinoid calices, and other specimens may be found with careful excavation and preparation.

Join us on Saturday, May 16th when HNHS Cincinnati members Dan Coo-per, Don Bissett, Matt Phillips, and their team will show you how complete trilobites can be found. The program will take place from 9 AM to 4 PM. The cost will be $25/Penn Dixie member and $30/non-member. This will be a fun event and a chance to find some other interesting fossils that have

been preserved in the rocks at Penn Dixie. The newly excavated area, with fresh layers of the Smokes Creek trilobite layer, will be staged around the digging area for participants to split the layers uncovering specimens that have been buried for over 380 million years!

A Special Event Day will also be held on May 16th where telescopes will be available to view sunspots and visitors may collect fossils for $9/adult and $7/child 12 and under, children 2 and under and Penn Dixie members will be free. Staff and volunteers will introduce visitors to the site and lead them to some of the better collecting areas on the site where they can keep all the fossils they find.

Participants in the “Dig” should bring gloves, a crack hammer, chisels, a pry bar, safety glasses, a small shovel, newspa-per, paper towels, Elmer’s glue & water, and a collecting bag or flat for your specimens. Dan, Don, and Matt have been collecting at Penn Dixie for many years and know some of the good areas to collect. Penn Dixie members and non-mem-bers, from around the country and Canada, are already signed up for the ‘Dig’. If you are interested in signing up for this program, please call (716) 627-4560 or email [email protected].

HNHS members are welcome and encouraged to visit the Penn Dixie Site during the daylight hours by leaving a message on the Penn Dixie phone at (716) 627-4560 indicating when and how many in your party will be on-site. This helps keep track of site use and when vehicles are parked outside of the gate, that they are not mistaken as abandoned cars and towed away. Please do not block the gate, as groups and other trips may be visiting the site and we don’t want to have to tow your car if we cannot locate you. The access road off of North Street is a right-of-way obtained from the Town of Hamburg by the HNHS for site access. This private roadway was installed with HNHS funds to make the site accessible for all. This is not an official town roadway and should remain open for site accessibility at all times.

Each membership has received a membership card that should be brought to the site each time you visit. If you encoun-ter any problems with trespassers or individuals on the site, please leave a message on the Penn Dixie phone, photo-graph them, or if the situation warrants, call the Town of Hamburg Police at 648-5111, and if there is an emergency call 911 and ask for the Hamburg Police Department and explain your problem to them. If a call is made to the police depart-ment, please leave a message on the Society phone ASAP or call one of the HNHS officers. If you have any questions or concerns about these procedures, please call and leave a message and we will get back to you ASAP. The numbers of incidents are decreasing, but it is our goal to make the site incident-free and enjoyable for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PENN DIXIE TO BE AT THE ERIE COUNTY FAIR AUGUST 12-23Penn Dixie will have an exhibit in the Erie County Fair Au-gust 12-23 in the Conservation Building from 9 AM-10 PM every day. The Penn Dixie exhibit, fossil dig, program infor-mation and items for sale will be part of the exhibit. Penn Dixie will have two staff and/or volunteers at the exhibit for the entire day. A sign-up sheet is being prepared to sign up representatives for a 4-hour minimum shift. There are free admission tickets and parking tickets available for volun-teers that will represent Penn Dixie during 12 days of the fair. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Jerry Bastedo at [email protected] or call (716) 627-4560. This is going to be an excellent opportunity to market Penn Dixie programs, events, and memberships. More informa-tion will be available in the July-August newsletter.

PENN DIXIE FOSSILS NEEDED Have you been high grading your Penn Dixie fossils? Do you have too many brachiopods, horn corals, trilobite heads, bodies & tails, and crinoid stems? Please do not throw them out!! Penn Dixie can use them for the fossil dig, the fossil kits, and the fossil grab bags. If you have a lot of these specimens that you do not want, please bring them to the site so they can be used to get many children and adults excited about fossils and collecting. As Penn Dixie is going to have the fossil dig at the Erie County Fair this year, thousands of fossils are going to be needed for the kids visiting the exhibit. If you need to have your fos-sils picked up, please leave a message at (716) 627-4560.

20TH ANNIVERSARY PLANNED FOR SATURDAY,AUGUST 29, 2015Penn Dixie was formed in January 1996 when the Hamburg Natural History Society, Inc., acquired the first 32.5 acres of the site with the assistance of the Town of Hamburg. Since that time, the HNHS has purchased two additional contiguous tracts of land, 16.75 acres in 2004 and 5 acres in 2008, to make Penn Dixie a 54-acre outdoor education center. Penn Dixie was initially cleaned up in May 1996 and staged development of the site was begun. The site now has over 4,100 ft. of paved trails for handicap accessibility with wheel chairs, walkers, strollers and wagons; five shelters; a 26-ft long bridge across a tributary to Rush Creek; Eagle Scout projects that cleared and trimmed over 3,000 ft. of trails and installed fabric and stone on over 1,800 ft. of those trails; Eagle Scout projects also constructed and installed many blue bird nesting boxes, bat houses, owl boxes, chain link fencing, planted many trees and shrubs, constructed two of the five shelters on-site, and performed many cleanup projects on the site.

The HNHS/Board, staff and members are planning on a 20th Anniversary Celebration of the saving, preservation and development of the Penn Dixie Site on Saturday, August 29, 2015. Anyone interested in helping with this event may contact Linda Catalano, HNHS/Penn Dixie Treasurer at 603-9340 or leave a message on the Penn Dixie phone at (716) 627-4560. Sponsors will be solicited to help fund this celebration and will be recognized for their support. If you, your company or organization, would like to help sponsor this event or take out an ad, information will soon be available.

FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESKThis may be the winter that would never quit, but it is finally over and Spring has arrived. The trilobites have weathered the snow and cold well. Penn Dixie is off to a great start with visitors from 14 states and three countries – Canada, China and Japan. The turkey, deer, and variety of birds are providing some added excitement for visitors. Schools, groups, and families are having some great discoveries and an exciting experience learning more about the geology, fossils, astronomy, and nature at the site. Bring your family, visitors and colleagues to Penn Dixie this year. Have your children and/or grandchildren experience some of the programs and summer day camps for fun-filled activities learning about the natural sciences.

Welcome to all those new members listed in this newsletter and thank you to all the members that have renewed. Memberships are an important source of revenues that help provide programs and events. Please help Penn Dixie continue to grow by recruiting new members from your family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors. They will enjoy and have as much fun as you and your family are while helping support the No. 1 Fossil Park in the United States! Thank you all for your support.

Thank you to all those who have made donations to Penn Dixie and are listed in this newsletter. Special thanks to Matt Phillips, of Martinsville, VA, who has made a $2,000 donation to help support the programs and opera-tions of the Penn Dixie Site. Matt is a Life Member and continuing supporter of Penn Dixie. Donations, of any size, help continue and expand the operations, programs, and development of Penn Dixie. As a non-profit orga-nization it is always a struggle raising funds. Your help is gratefully appreciated. Thank you all.

The HNHS/Penn Dixie needs new Board Members. If you are interested in helping Penn Dixie increase pro-grams, continue the site development, and help secure memberships and funding for the outdoor education center, please contact the HNHS/Penn Dixie Board President Felice Krycia at 649-7296, it takes many hands to working as a team to attain the goals and objectives of the Society.

Penn Dixie is pleased to have Sarah Einhouse as the new full-time Director of Education who began employ-ment on April 27, 2015. She has hit the ground running with many programs well underway. In her first four days she has experienced Penn Dixie lecture programs, school groups at the site, the Penn Dixie Science Night, computer challenges, new programming development, and more. An article in this newsletter provides additional information on Sarah. Please welcome her when you see her at Penn Dixie programs, events and at the site.I would like to thank all the volunteers that attended the training on March 14. There were 33 in attendance, many have already been helping Penn Dixie with programs and activities. The Special Event, Astronomy pro-grams, school and group visits all need your help. We look forward to seeing you at many of our events.

Penn Dixie is taking a BIG step this year and will have an exhibit at the Erie County Fair in the Conservation Building for all 12 days from 9 AM-10 PM. This is exciting as it provides Penn Dixie an opportunity to meet and introduce the No. 1 Fossil Park in the United States to thousands of visitors that pass through this building every year. There will be a schedule setup, with four hour shifts to help staff this exhibit. We will provide training for those that will help staff the exhibit. This is a great opportunity for Penn Dixie and can help increase visitors and memberships, which are an important source of revenues. Fair passes and parking tickets will be available for those that help with the exhibit. See the article in this news-letter on how to sign up.

Penn Dixie has many schools, exhibits, programs, summer day camps, and other events throughout the spring-summer-and fall that you can help volunteer or participate. PaleoJoe is presenting an illustrated program on “Long necked Dinosaurs from Utah: Myths or Mysteries” on May 15 at 7 PM and he will be on Channel 7 AM Buffalo, with Linda Pelligerino, that morning promoting his presentation and Penn Dixie. The next is the 11th Annual ‘Dig with the Experts’ and Special Event Program at Penn Dixie. There are already participants in the ‘Dig with the Experts’ signed up from 6 different states and Canada. It will definitely be an exciting event for all to attend. Children’s Day June 7, the 24th Annual Penn Dixie Nature Cruise on June 14, and the 11th Annual Big Toys, Trucks and Bikes Event will be a great activities for all ages and a great way to start the summer of 2015! We look forward to seeing you at many of these events.

CHARITABLE GIVING PLANNING CAN HELP PENN DIXIEMany taxpayers attempt to streamline their finances to ensure that transactions that can be deducted on their tax return are completed in a timely way. This includes making gifts to charities. Do you plan to include your retirement assets in charitable donations? If so, consider how it may affect your finances. In some cases, it can be more beneficial to name the charity as a designated beneficiary of your retirement account, rather than giving the assets during your lifetime. The Hamburg Natural History Society/Penn Dixie is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, a charitable organization. In this uncertain economic climate, the HNHS/Penn Dixie is going to be more dependent on new and additional sources of funding.

A Charitable donation is a gift made by an individual or an organization to a non-profit organization, charity, or private foundation. Charitable donations are commonly in the form of cash, but can also take the form of real estate, motor vehicles, appreciated securities, or other assets and services. Charitable donations often represent the primary source of funding for many charitable organizations and non-profit organizations. Most charitable donations made by an individual will provide him or her with an income tax deduction. For more information contact our financial consultant Michael Brown, of the Wall Street Financial Group,

at (585) 507-2596.

CORPORATE CHARITABLE

PLANS & MEMBERSHIPS

Many corporations have estab-lished matching corporate chari-

table donation plans for their employees to make income tax deductible donations to their preferred charity or non-profit organization. The Hamburg Natural History Society, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that qualifies for these plans. Please check with your employer to see if the HNHS can be added to their charitable donation plan. If you do not see your company listed in the lists of corporate members, please contact your company man-ager or owner about helping support an important unique and classic educational, cultural, recreational and tourist attraction that you support. Memberships are a major supporter of the Penn Dixie programs and operations.
