Pfizer Direct major threat PEAK wholesaler group theNational PharmaceuticalServices Association (NPSA) haswarned of the likely collapse ofthe current CSO systemguaranteeing delivery of drugsacross the country if othermanufacturers adopt a similarmodel to the controversialPfizer Direct distribution topharmacy. Yesterday Dr Ian Harper fromDeloitte Access Economicsreleased a report showing thatif GSK, AstraZeneca and Sanofi-Aventis go down the sameroute the cost of delivering theremaining medicines coveredby the CSO would rise by 37%. This snowballing effectmeans that “the option ofabandoning the CSO willbecome increasingly attractiveto traditional wholesalers asthey seek to maintain viability, further compromising patientaccess to the full range of PBSmedicines”. Harper and the NPSA areadvocating that the governmentshould force Pfizer to also offerits medicines to the three fullline CSO wholesalers - even if itpersists in its directdistribution model. Dr Harper said that thegovernment was effectively“wasting taxpayer’s money” if itdoesn’t ensure that availabilitythrough full line wholesalers ismandated for PBS listed drugs. At the launch yesterday of theEconomic Analysis of ExclusiveDistribution of PBS Medicinesreport, Harper also detailed thesituation in the UK, France,Germany and South Africawhere there had beensignificant problems with theavailability of medicinesfollowing the adoption of direct

distribution. “Overseas experienceillustrates how exclusivedistribution can change thedynamics of the pharmaceuticaldistribution supply chain, shifting the focus frompharmacy to manufacturers, and hence from a systemorientated toward patient needto one driven by commercialimperatives,” the report warns. NPSA is urging “policyintervention” to uphold theobjectives of Australia’sNational Medicines Policy. A number of pharmacistspassionate about the impact ofthe changes on their patientsspoke out at yesterday’s launch- details in tomorrow’s PD. MEANWHILE NPSA, whichincludes Symbion and Sigma, isset to shortly expand with theaddition of state-basedwholesalers CHS and NationalPharmacies, giving a strongervoice to the group. And although API isn’t amember, President PatrickDavies told PD that in the caseof Pfizer Direct NPSA isrepresenting the interests ofthe full wholesaling sector.

GSK on PBS and new drugs TOUGH financial environmentsshould not preclude patientsfrom access to new medicinesthey need, according toGlaxoSmithKline GeneralManager Australia and NewZealand, Deborah Waterhouse. Waterhouse’s commentscome in the wake of theGovernment’s decision to listthe benign prostatichyperplasia medicine Duodart(dutasteride/tamsulosinhydrochloride) on the PBS from01 August (PD Tue). Initially referred to theGovernment for listing by thePBAC, Duodart was indefinitelydeferred from the PBS inFebruary this year, in a movewhich forced GSK to undertakeurgent discussions with thegovt to prove that there weresignificant immediate and longterm benefits to patients andtaxpayers by listing Duodart. The discussions appear tohave paid off for GSK, withNicola Roxon finally conceding

that Duodart will produce anoverall saving to the budget. “We recognise theGovernment faces difficultfinancial and budget decisions, especially during this currenttight global fiscal environment, but deferring the listing of newmedicines on the PBS will leadto Australian patients beingunfairly treated,” saidWaterhouse. “They will not have access tothe benefits of the latesttreatments. The PBS continuesto be one of the Government’smost rigorous, evidence based, efficient and effective, spendingprograms,” she added. MEANWHILE The UrologicalSociety of Australia and NewZealand has welcomedDuodart’s listing, saying “this isgood news for the manyAustralian men who suffer thisuncomfortable condition, andwe are pleased they will haveaccess to this treatment at amore affordable price”.

PRIMATE is a water-baby at heart. An eight-year old gorilla,Zola, at Canada’s Calgary Zoohas become a smash hit afterhe was filmed having a dancein a puddle of water. Zola was caught dancing byhis keeper, who had taken hiscamera into the enclosure tofilm several primates, in a bidto raise awareness of theirendangered plight. According to zoo officials,Zola loves water and does adance every time heencounters it. “The whole behaviour ofjust being fascinated withwater and splashing andplaying is something that theydo in the wild and somegorillas do in captivity aswell,” a zoo spokesperson said. The film shows Zolastomping, tap- and splash-dancing through the puddle,as well as spinning on hisheel in what looks remarkablylike breakdancing. So far Zola’s splash-dancehas clocked 425,000 hits onYouTube, with the zoodelighted that his antics havegarnered so much attentionfor the highly-endangeredWestern Lowland gorillas.
