PLANETARY  HEXAGRAMS  WITHIN  ASTROLOGY  WHEEL.  The  planetary  energies  can  also  be  invoked  into  a  ritual  wheel.  These  invocations  are  hexagonal  made  up  of  an  ascending  triangle  and  a  descending  triangle.  This  means  to  invoke  the  planets  we  use  triangles  that  are  based  on  element.  All  invoking  follows  the  course  of  the  Sun  and  all  banishing  works  counter  to  the  direction  of  the  Sun.  I  place  these  hexagrams  in  the  astrology  wheel  because  I  find  it  easier  to  remember  how  to  invoke  and  banish  and  at  what  position  each  of  the  planets  sits.        

 I  =invoking                                                                                                                                                                                          B=Banishing    If  we  study  the  make  up  of  the  Hexagrams  from  the  work  of  Israel  Regardie1  we  notice  that  the  ascending  triangle  has  Saturn  at  the  apex  in  Capricorn  and  the    base  of  the  triangle  is  made  up  with  Venus  in  Virgo  and  Mercury  in  Taurus.  This  creates  an  Earth  triangle  with  all  planets  of  rulership  of  the  earth  signs.  However

the  planets  apart  from  Saturn  are  not  placed    in  the  sign  of  their  rulership.  Mercury  and  Venus  are  mutually  receptive.  The  descending  triangle  has  the  Moon  at  the  inverted  base  in  its  sign  of  Cancer.  The  two  planets  at  the  ascended  baseline  are  Mars  and  Jupiter  both  in  water  signs:  Jupiter  in  Scorpio  and  Mars  in  Pisces.    Again  we  have  an  inverse  of    rulership  positioning  but  this  time  by  the  nocturnal  rulership  placement  of  Jupiter  and  Mars.        This  concept  of  the  Earth  based  triangle  being  solar-­‐  as  in  daytime  and  the    inverted  triangle  is  a  water  triangle  and  rulerships  are  the  night  thus  working  the  lunar  energy  means  the  hexagram  operates  in  solar  and  lunar  times.    Invoking  on  any  arm  of  these  triangles  follows  the  direction  of  the  sun  and  banishing  follows  the  reverse  motion  of  the  sun.  As  in  the  idea  in  all  geometric  shape  connected  with  magic  is  the  pair  of  triangles  –one  upright  and  one  inverse  symbolises  as  above,  so  below,  as  without  so  within.  This  concept  is  found  in  most  symbols  of  planetary  magick.  To  draw  the  hexagram,  they  are  not  continuous  like  the  pentagrams.  They  are  two  distinct  triangles  so  if  we  begin  by    

• Invoking  Saturn  we  would  draw  Saturn  to  Venus  to  Mercury  and  back  to  Saturn.  Then  begin  with  the  Moon  to  Mars  to  Jupiter  and  back  to  Moon.    Invoking  the  Moon  would  draw  the  Moon  triangle  first.  

• Invoking  Jupiter  would  flow  Jupiter  to  Moon  to  Mars  back  to  Jupiter,  then  Mercury  would  begin  the  Earth  triangle  to  Saturn  to  Venus  to  Mercury.  

• Invoking  Venus  would  run  Venus  to  Mercury  to  Saturn  back  to  Venus  and  the  water  triangle  would  begin  with  Mars  to  Jupiter  to  Moon  and  back  to  Mars.  

• To  invoke  the  Sun,  you  invoke  the  six  other  planets.  Whichever  planet  you  wish  to  invoke,  the  second  triangle  begins  at  the  opposition  planet.  This  means  there  are  three  oppositions  represented  in  the  two  grand  trines:  Saturn  opposite  Moon  Jupiter  opposite  Mercury  Venus  opposite  Mars  So  what  does  this  tell  us?  If  we  were  reading  a  chart  we  would  find  these  oppositions  troublesome.  Saturn  /  Moon  is  no  laugh  for  anyone.  Restricted  emotion,  or  maybe  what  we  are  trying  to  do  by  invoking  these  planetary  energies  into  our  ritual  or  wheel  space  is  to  give  the  emotion  structure.  This  would  make  sense  with  magick  because  one  of  its  purposes  is  to  contain  “states  “so  we  can  learn  the  nature  of  how  they  work.  We  invoke  into  a  set  structure,  circle  or  wheel  that    which  we  have  defined,  perform  our  ceremony  which  is  to  alter  usually  a  mind  state  or  situation  and  then  release  the  energy  and  its  form  back  to  the  Universe.  The  second  opposition  of  Jupiter  and  Mercury  is  easier  to  understand  because  it  expands  knowledge  and  if  you  weren’t  interested  in  expanding  knowledge,  you  wouldn’t  be  studying  this  at  all.  Interestingly  Mercury  is  in  the  Taurus  so  the  opportunity  to  earth  the  knowledge  exists  and  Jupiter  in  Scorpio  expands  it  to  great  depth.  They  are  also  in  the  fixed  wing  of  the  triangles  so  the  knowledge  forms  and  stays  in  place.  The  third  opposition  of  Mars  and  Venus  seems  to  indicate  an  inclusion  of  the  sexual  self,  exploring  the  masculine  and  feminine  within  us.  Mars  in  Pisces  is  a  

surprise  because  this  is  almost  a  non-­‐functional  place  for  Mars.  If  I  had  to  pick  the  most  difficult  place  to  put  Mars,  I  would  choose  Pisces.  Mars  nature  has  to  swim  or  fire  is  deeply  immersed  in  chaotic  water.    This  pair  also  has  to  deal  with  mutability.  Maybe  this  highlights  to  us  the  changing  form  of  or  sexuality.          Now  I  must  admit  I  put  these  hexagrams  in  the  Astrology  Wheel,  Regardie  doesn’t.  He  says  one  is  a  fire  triangle  and  one  is  water,  however  if  we  want  to  place  the  hexagram  in  our  Astrology  wheel  and  I  do  because  I  believe  it  is  a  ritual  wheel  and  I  like  to  walk  and  mark  out  the  hexagonal  flow  between  the  planets  in  a  geometrical  circle  which  is  what  our  Astrology  wheel  offers,  then  the  two  triangles  can  not  be  fire  and  water.  They  can  be  feminine  –  earth  and  water,  or  if  I  rotate  them  slightly;  masculine,  air  and  fire.  To  get  two  perfect  grand  trines,  one  ascending  and  the  other  descending  in  our  astrology  wheel  they  can  not  be  fire  and  water  or  earth  and  air  triangles.      

 I=invoking  and  moves  in  the  direction  of  the  Sun  B=Banishing  and  moves  in  the  opposite  direction.    If  I  turned  the  hexagram  into  the  masculine  (see  above)  I  would  place  Saturn  in  Aquarius  as  it  once  had  a  rulership  of  Aquarius    and  is  considered  the  day  ruler  of  Aquarius,  Venus  to  Libra,  its  night  rulership  and  Mercury  to  Gemini,  then  the  Moon  would  got  to  Leo.    Mars  and  Jupiter  would  move  to  their  signs  of  rulership  

Aries  and  Sagittarius  respectively.  This  would  make  a  hexagram  of  complete  rulers  except  for  the  Moon.  Maybe  I  would  be  tempted  to  switch  it  to  the  Sun    (  Mr.  Regardie  rolls  in  his  grave  )  as  this  is  a  masculine  hexagram  and  wow  what  a  strong  piece  of  planetary  invoking  this  would  create.  I  have  to  concede  this  is  a  hexagram  of  enormous  power.        Why  would  we  use  these  hexagrams?    To  create  these  hexagrams  and  place  them  in  the  astrology  wheel,  I  am  following  the  work  of  magicians  and  trying  to  decipher  how  it  applies  to  astrology  if  used  as  a  magical  practice  today.  According  to  Melita  Denning  and  Osborne  Phillips  co  authors  of  Planetary  Magick,2  the  planets  evoke  in  us  a  stirring  of  the  Deep  Mind,  far  greater  than  the  superficial  level  of  the  physical  world.  As  if  held  within  us  from  time  immemorial  all  ancient  wisdoms  have  placed  the  planetary  wisdom  as  the  most  important.  In  their  work  they  suggested  we  invoke  the  planetary  energy  in  our  magick  work  to  trigger  the  notions’  of  our  desires  held  deep  within  us.  If  we  are  trying  to  use  magick  for  healing  or  teaching  we  can  evoke  the  symbols,  words,  colours  or  sounds  of  any  planet  to  strengthen  our  case.
