THE TOURING EVENTS OF THE PLANT FOR THE PLANET PROGRAMME LED BY THE YVES ROCHER FOUNDATION – INSTITUT DE FRANCE PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET UP EACH YEAR AND ENCOURAGE INITIATIVES FOR PLANTING TREES AND LIVING HEDGES. BUT THEY ALSO GO FAR BEYOND THIS.

LA TOURNÉE D’ANIMATIONS DU PROGRAMME PLANTONS POUR LA PLANÈTE DE LA FONDATION YVES ROCHER – INSTITUT DE FRANCE, CE SONT CHAQUE ANNÉE DES RENCONTRES ET DES ACTIONS POUR PLANTER DES ARBRES ET DES HAIES VIVES, MAIS PAS SEULEMENT.

La Fondation Yves Rocher s’engage, avec l’AFAC-Agrofores-teries, pour défendre la cause de l’arbre partout et dans tous ses états : en soutenant la production de graines locales en Auvergne, en reconstruisant le paysage bocager chez un agri-culteur à Rivarennes, en greffant des pommiers pour préser-ver les variétés anciennes en Franche-Comté… Depuis 2008, la Fondation Yves Rocher a déjà planté 2 millions d’arbres en France et organisé une centaine d’animations, toujours riches de rencontres, d’engagements et d’échanges. Mais, au-delà des quelques journées d’animation avec les bénévoles réunis par la Fondation, le programme Plantons pour la Planète, ce sont avant tout des planteurs qui œuvrent tous les jours pour les arbres, en France et partout dans le monde, pour planter 100 millions d’arbres à l’horizon 2020 et marquer la planète d’une empreinte résolument positive.

Alongside AFAC-Agroforesteries, the Yves Rocher Foundation is committed to defending trees everywhere in a variety of ways, from supporting the production of local seeds in Auvergne or rebuilding the wooded landscape around a farm in Rivarennes to grafting apple trees in order to preserve old-fashioned varieties in Franche-Comté. Since 2008, the Yves Rocher Foundation has planted two million trees in France, and organised around a hun-dred events, with each one always delivering a rich variety of encounters, commitments and discussions. But beyond these few days of events attended by volunteers of the Foundation, the Plant for the Planet programme is first and foremost about the planters who work with the Yves Rocher Foundation every day to cultivate trees in France and around the world. Their objective is to plant 100 million trees by 2020, thus leaving a resolutely positive foot-print on the planet.

LAQUEUILLE, PUY-DE-DÔME (63)> Les terres auvergnates ont été choisies pour organiser une animation du programme Plantons pour la Planète sur le thème de la préparation de graines locales. La Mission Haies Auvergne, partenaire majeur de la Fondation Yves Rocher, soutient depuis 2010 la mise en place d’une filière de production de plants garantissant l’origine locale de la graine. Un capital génétique essentiel pour la flore qui doit être capable de résis-ter ici aux rigueurs de l’hiver et l’été.

LAQUEUILLE, PUY-DE-DÔME (63)> The Yves Rocher Foundation chose the Auvergne region of France to organise a Plant for the Planet event on the theme of local seed preparation. La Mission Haies Auvergne – a major partner of the Yves Rocher Foundation – has been supporting the introduction of a plant production network guaranteeing the local origin of seeds since 2010. This genetic capital is essential to the local flora, which must be able to withstand the region’s summers and harsh winters.

« Nous avons choisi de travailler les graines d’aubépine. Elles sont difficiles à extraire, c’est un vrai challenge. Il faut écraser les baies, trier la pulpe, la filtrer au moins quatre fois avant d’en sortir des graines. »“We decided to grow hawthorn seeds. They are difficult to obtain, so it’s a real challenge. Graines de fusain d’Europe (Euonymus europaeus), autrement dénommé « bonnet d’évêque » de par la forme de la capsule rose bonbon qui englobe les graines orange vif. C’est une essence qui ne passe pas inaperçue dans la nature à l'automne ! Les graines sont toxiques. C’est avec les branches de cet arbuste qu’on fabrique le crayon fusain.

Spindle grains (Euonymus europaeus) are named for the shape of their pink capsule that carries the bright orange seeds. This variety is easy to spot in autumn! The seeds are poisonous, while the branches of this shrub are used to make charcoal pencils.

SAESSOLSHEIM, BAS-RHIN (67)> Le mois de mars et ses giboulées n’auront pas eu raison de la détermination des planteurs venus en nombre pour plan-ter le long des terres de Julien Scharch, un jeune agriculteur bio installé à Saessolsheim, en Alsace. La Fondation Yves Rocher a choisi en effet d’accompagner ce jeune exploitant engagé dans une démarche de préservation de la nature. Planter des haies, cultiver sans pesticides et au rythme des sai-sons, c’est pour Julien une évidence. L’agriculteur sait que ces arbres protégeront ses récoltes des intempéries, de la séche-resse et contribueront à préserver la biodiversité.

SAESSOLSHEIM, BAS-RHIN (67)> Even the drizzly month of March could not dampen the determination of the planters, who turned out in force to plant hedges along the edges of fields belonging to Julien Scharch, a young organic farmer operating in Saessolsheim, Alsace. The Yves Rocher Foundation chose to support this committed young farmer in his quest to help preserve the environment. Planting hedges and farming without pesticides in accordance with the seasons are all natural choices for Julien. The farmer knows that these plants will protect his harvests from the ele-ments, including drought, and will help preserve the area’s biodiversity.

VANDONCOURT, DOUBS (25)> Nos équipes de planteurs se sont également arrêtées sur les terres de Véronique Fiers à Vandoncourt, en Franche-Comté. Véronique Fiers, présidente de l’association Vergers Vivants, a été récompensée pour son action de préservation du patri-moine fruitier de sa région par le Prix Terre de Femmes en 2015. Elle a accueilli la Fondation Yves Rocher et ses invités pour un atelier de greffage de pommiers. Cette technique permet de multiplier une même variété à l’identique et ainsi de préserver des variétés rares qui sont souvent bien plus savoureuses que les fruits de supermarchés.

« Mon père et mon grand-père greffaient des arbres mais ne m’ont pas transmis leur savoir-faire. Je vais maintenant pouvoir greffer un pommier d’une variété rare dans mon jardin. »“My father and grandfather grafted trees, but they did not pass their expertise down to me. VANDONCOURT, DOUBS (25)> Our teams of planters also stopped off at the orchards belonging to Véronique Fiers in Vandoncourt in the Franche-Comté region. Véronique Fiers chairs the Vergers Vivants association and won the Terre de Femmes Award in 2015 for her initiatives to preserve the fruit-tree legacy of her region. Véronique welcomed the Yves Rocher Foundation and its tree-planting volunteers for an apple-tree graft-ing workshop. This technique makes it possible to identically repro-duce species of apple trees and to thus preserve some rare varieties, whose fruit often tastes better than the fruit sold in supermarkets.

POUR ATTÉNUER LES EFFETS DU CLIMAT > Une haie, lorsqu’elle est composée de plusieurs essences feuillues, a pour effet de filtrer et casser les masses d’air, elle « brise » le vent.

TO MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE> Hedges comprised of different hardwood species filter air mass and act as windbreaks.

POUR LUTTER CONTRE L’ÉROSION ET LES POLLUTIONS> Un réseau de haies implantées perpendiculairement à la pente permet :● de ralentir l’écoulement des eaux de pluie ;● de limiter l’érosion des sols ;● d’améliorer la filtration de l’eau donc de stopper les

substances « polluantes » et de mieux alimenter les nappes ;● de réguler le débit des cours d’eau.

Cette année, nous avons mené bien d’autres actions en France : In France this year, with the help of Yves Rocher, we have also:

900 mètres de hêtres plantés à Joué-du-Plain, dans l’Orne, pour réhabiliter l’Allée de la Motte.

Près de 1 000 arbres plantés à Chevry-en-Sereine, en Seine-et-Marne, le long d’un chemin rural.

250 amandiers plantés aux Baux-de-Provence, dans les Bouches-du-Rhône, afin de relancer la culture d’amandes dans les Alpilles.

200 mètres de haies ondulées plantés à Onet-le-Château, dans l’Aveyron, afin de protéger l’activité en milieu rural.

Plantation de haies à Rivarennes, en Indre-et-Loire, pour reconstruire des parcelles remembrées.

Plantation d’une centaine d’arbres à Sanguinet, dans les Landes, afin de former une haie en bordure d’une parcelle maraîchère.

500 mètres de haies plantés en bordure des wateringues à Warhem, dans le Nord.
