    STORIES FROM THE STREET

    SUCCESSES & IMPACT

My brother could have used a program like this.

About the bus and the program... Te idea o having a mobile youth centre (a term I heard a lot duringmy ride along) is something that strikes me as odd. Odd you ask? Well, its certainly something Icould never have imagined until only a ew weeks ago. Odd in that its completely dierent. I thinkoverall, odd is a quality these days. Upon witnessing your sta approach, hang out, chat, and introducethemselves to the kids that were out in that cold park, I was impressed. Nobody ran away. Nobody wasupset. Instead, it was as though some more riends just showed up to the party... and not in any kind oirresponsible way. I know rom more a personal point o view that a program like this could certainly havebeneted my brother when we were growing up in Kelowna. I can see rom that angle how he elt like no

one cared, no one understood him, and how he never would have thought to show up at a physical placeasking or help. Te idea o someone coming to him and just hanging out and being able to listen mostlikely would have helped him get through what he needed to get through ar more quickly than he did(holding him up, as you said). I was, or the most part, out o the country when he went through his worsttime and I think my parents elt helpless with him.

Summer, 2008 (Bus Log)Te bus received a call rom a youth late Saturday evening, around 10:30pm. Concerned and not knowingwhat to do about a riend past out behind 7-11. We arrived to nd a young 13 year old, passed out, on herback, and unconscious. She had thrown up alot. We responded by immediately calling 911 and the police. We put her on her side, made sure she was warm, sae, and breathing. Te emergency services showed up,continued to assist her. We called her parent know o the situation and helped provide inormation onwhich hospital her child was being taken to.

Her mother was not surprised by her daughters behaviour, she was overwhelmed by the support and helpthe bus sta gave her daughter. In tears, she thanked the crew and knew her daughter would be ok. Shewas so appreciative that the bus was out there.

Great job by the bus crew and collaborations with RCMP and EMS.

HIS WAS HE HIRD SUCH INCIDEN WIHIN A WO MONH SPAN. Street youthare getting younger, more vulnerable and need more support. 95% o youth using drugs in school, rstbegin on the street, then ows into the schools. We need more early intervention and prevention on

the street. PoCoMo is proud the services Project Reach Out provides.

Stories from the Street is a section dedicated to the successes andreal life stories contributed by youth, staff, and other individuals that have
