How the process worksAlthough i t is by no means essential that you

understand the Land process to get beauti fulp ic tures, many camera owners are in terestedin learn ing how the camera works.

The Land photographic process uses a l ight -sensit ive "negative" material which is some'th ing l ike convent iona l photographic f i lm. Ord i -nari ly this negative, after exposure, would bedeveloped, f ixed, washed and dr ied, and thenused to make pos i t ive pr in ts in another ser iesof operat ions. But in the Land camera, the nega-t ive and posit ive are developed at the samet ime, by the same chemica l reagent .

As the d iagram shows, the negat ive and pos i 't ive ro l ls are p laced in the i r conta iners , w i th thenegat ive moving past the lens box and arounda ro l ler , where i t meets the pos i t ive sheet .

When the camera back is c losed, the upperand lower rol lers press the two sheets together. As the sheets are pu l led to process a p ic ture, asmal l sea led "pod" conta in ing a je l l ied com'pound and attached to the posit ive sheetpasses between the rol lers and breaks out

along one edge al lowing the mixture to f low out.The rol lers spread the reagent between thetwo sheets, and development takes place. At rue photographic image forms on the whi teposit ive paper (which is not l ight-se.nsit ive). Theimage is made of meta l l ic s i lver car r ied overf rom the negat ive in prec ise ly the r ight amountsto depict the scene as you photographed i t .
