    Water our most precious resource.

Water is essential to life. It covers nearlythree quarters of the ear ths surface. Yet,fresh water constitutes barely three percentof our total water resources, with most ofit contained in the glaciers and polar icecaps.

Changes in the global climate havecaused many people to re-think. Today, our key priority in terms of environmen-tal awareness it to be more sparing withnatures resources. And nowhere more so

than in the case of water, the stuff of lifewith which we are all in constant dailycontact.

With Pontos we have taken up thischallenge. Since 2001, Pontos is synony-mous with biological water recycling.

Like our parent company Hansgrohe SE,which we have been integrated in 2011,we are committed to producing ecologicalproducts in harmony with nature.

Our first steps towards biological waterrecycling were taken back in 1994 byKlaus Grohe. From 1997 onwards, theprocess was proven in practice and overthe years, the Pontos AquaCycle develo-ped into the sophisticated, reliable systemwe have today. Even now, it still under-

goes continuous testing under laboratoryconditions in the interests of further im-provement. At the same time, we invest inthe development of new, resource-savingtechnologies. Because we know that ourwater supplies are not limitless.

This diagram shows just how important itis to use water with care. It indicates thatfour billion people i. e. half the worlds

    population will suffer extreme water

shortages by 2025. That is, if we carryon as we do ... And did you know thatwater shortages also slow down economic

    growth?

Are we really running out of water?

    Drinking water quality required

*The average per capita water consumption in

Germany is 129 litres per day.

    How much drinking water

    do we really need?

Water is too valuable to be wasted. In thefuture, it seems we will no longer be able

to take its constant availability for gran-ted. We are accustomed to use drinkingwater for almost everything even wherewe dont need it. The pie chart illustratesthis clearly: the green segments representactivities for which drinking water qualityisnt strictly necessary.*

Thats where the Pontos AquaCycle comesin. It allows water from showers and baths

to be reused thanks to a purely biologi-cal recycling process with no chemicaladditives.

The Pontos AquaCycle represents a majorcontribution to ecological sustainability. Itreduces water usage and with it watercosts by up to 50 percent, providing uswith an intelligent way of saving waterwithout compromising any of our moderncomforts.

    Short and sweet:

    The process in a nutshell.

1 Firs t a filterremoves coarse particles (e.g. textile fluff

or hairs) from the incoming grey water from the shower

    or bath tub.

2 Then the water undergoes the first stage of biologi-

cal treatment. Here, with the supply of atmospheric

oxygen, microorganisms degrade the contaminants in

    the water.

3 In the second stage of biological treatment, the

process of the first stage is repeated.

4 In the final stage, the water is disinfectedby using

an UV lampand stored in the process water tank until

    re-use.

5 The sediments generated during the biological treat-

ment are automatically removed and conducted into

    the drains.

6 If insuffi cient process water is available, the automatic

drinking water back-up ensures supply to the tapping

    points.

It has always been the aspiration of H ansgrohe todesign products in line with ecological cr iteria. And because our element is water, we at Pontos encouraged by Klaus Grohe have been com-paigning for the sustainable use of water since t hebeginning of the nineties. In 1997, initial develop -ments for biological water recycling started to un-dergo practical trials, and these provided the ba-sis for the technology we use in our biologicalgrey water recycling the Pontos AquaCycle.

    Sustainability: Grey water recycling

Grey water recyclingrelies on the fact thatone half of our water needs do not require waterof drinking quality: f lushing the toilet, cleaningchores and watering the garden are all taskswhich can be satisfactorily perf ormed with waterof recycled quality.

    Added sustainability: Grey water recycling

    with heat recovery

The way to save energy as well as water is to take

advantage of heat recovery. Here the heat in wa -ter from the shower and bath is recovered andused again. This saves on the energy for heatingwater and thus reduces CO

    2emissions.

Heat recovery and grey water recycl ing

    make an important contribution to

    sustainable architecture

For those who consider moder n architecture andsustainability to be inextricably linked, heat reco-very and grey water recycling should be an obvi-ous solution. Both systems help to reduce operati-

on costs and attract certificates for sustainableconstruction, which in turn raise the value of aproperty in the long term.

    The futurehas begun.

Warm grey water from the shower and bath enters the first stage of the Pontos HeatCycle with biological treatment. The grey water heats the transfer medium

(water), which is pumped through the heatexchanger in the first stage.

The now preheated transfer medium is fedinto a stratified storage tank.

D Fresh, cold drinking water flows through asecond heat exchanger inside the stratifiedstorage tank. Here it is preheated and then fedto the hot water generation.

The cold heat transfer medium is removed fromthe stratified storage tank and pumped throughthe heat exchanger in the first stage of thePontos HeatCycle. The entire process takes

    place continuously.

Service water supply forconsumption points (WCs,irrigation, cleaning, etc.)

    Circuit 2: Grey water recycling

A filter first removes any coarse particles fromthe incoming grey water, such as lint and hairs.

Then the water enters the first stage of thebiological treatment unit. Here microorganismsbreak down the dirt constituents of the water, with atmospheric oxygen being added.

The second stage of biological treatmentinvolves a repeat of the process from the first

    stage.

    1

    2

    3

4 In the final step, the water is disinfected withthe aid of an UV lamp and stored in the servicewater tank until it is used again.

The sediment arising during the biologicaltreatment is automatically drained off into thesewage system.

If too little service water is available, theautomatic drinking water refill ensures that the

consumption points receive a reliable supply.

Practical application: Heat recovery and grey

water recycling illustrated by a hotel

Due to the high volume of water generated fromshowers and baths, heat recovery with PontosHeatCycle and grey water recycling with PontosAquaCycle make particular sense in large residen-

tial units such as hotels and halls of residence.

Because water from the shower and bath are recyc-led and used a second time with Pontos AquaCycle(e.g. for flushing the toilet), drinking water demand

and effluent volume are both reduced significantly. What is more, using the heat of the water from theshower and bath, can significantly reduce the ener-gy consumption and hence CO2emissions as well.

The illustrations on these pages clearly indicatehow our fully integrated system fits in with the dailyfunctioning of a large property.

Pontos HeatCycle heat recovery can be deployed as a stand-alone unit or in combination with grey waterrecycling.

Combining the two technologies brings benefits for properties that not onlygenerate a high volume of grey water but also have high demand levels forservice water and warm drinking water.

A stand-alone heat recovery unit makes sense where there is only a smalldemand for service water, but where showering means that a large volumeof warm water is both produced and demanded - as is the case in sportsfacilities and swimming baths.

Grey water recycling is worthwhile in properties where water is producedfrom showers and baths and at the same time there is a high demand forservice water (for flushing the toilet, irrigating green spaces, cleaning).

    contribution to green building

    certificates

BREEAM is the assessment method of the British Building Research Establishment (BRE) which certifiesbuildings according to environmental aspects. In the category of energy efficiency we are able to scorehighly because up to 20 % of the energy for heating water can be saved with the Pontos HeatCycle. Andthe Pontos AquaCycle manages to secure a full 50 % of the points in the field of water efficiency. TheLEEDaward, which is issued by the US Green Building Council for sustainable construction, gives uscomparable percentage scores.

In its field of Ecological Quality the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) awards us up to

10 % of the points. The DGNB Certificate documents environmentally sound, economically efficient anduser-friendly buildings.
