shape

The future residence of the villa have strong affection with nature and want to get involved with it, but nevertheless they didn’t want to compromise it on the individual privacy. The connection with the nature is a big essence as involvement of all the family members.

The main mission is to create different areas where there is space for privacy, social activities, a work space (studio) and a strong connection with nature.

The concept “From Shelter to Nature” is derived from the interaction between housing and nature. With several design steps implemented, a certain flow is generated that encloses the gap and unite the contrast.

The “U” shape of the villa is based on the study of the sun light which has a dictating role. The forest with long trees and dense shrubs interfere with the sunlight and shade a part of the landscape. This interference has been used as motivation for the placement of main arrangements, some spaces are in need of direct sunlight (space with Social activities) meanwhile other spaces (Studio) can experience sunlight in a negative way.

Each family member is given the opportunity to decide in wich stadium they want to interfere with nature and it’s environment. It always has the choice to be totally transparent, partly transparent or to be excluded. This opportunity is given by the technological applications included in the façade of the building. The wooden framework can be manipulated to create this different kind of experience with the environment.

missioN

The mission of this project is to provoke the interest of young people between the age of 15 to 25 in the world of contemporary art. The main intention is to start a project in the form of a culture center, where the youth have the possibilities to engage in the big spectrum which contemporary art provides.

The engagement with the contemporary art should be provided on different scales. The purpose of the culture center lies not only in providing space for exploring art & the artist, but also to be creative and be an artist yourself. The main mission is to create a culture centre for the youth, where eight different art facilities are embedded in a structure where they can profit from each other as a collective and engage the visitors with the contemporary art.

The big spectrum of contemporary art is one entity that consists out of 8 segments. Each one of these segments represent an Art facility. These segments of art facilities have some alignment in the use of program and the mission they have for the Art facility in mind. In the case where there are similar goals and persuasions, there is interference of several segments seen as an advantage for diverse and punctual program.

The concept of “giant stride” is based on the route and the engagement you get with the contemporary art. It is based on the journey you experience by taking each step forward. The knowledge that you acquire on your journey will have a mental impact. But this mental impact is getting acknowledged mostly towards the end of the journey.

To emphasise the progres, whenever you take a step it is now a translation into a physical form. The route you take is tilted upwards, this activates the physical interaction within the culture center. The slope will lead towards the highest point wich represents a moment of revelation. This moment focuses to provide a full view of the culture centre.

The small steps taken at the early stage are suddenly justified as a “giant stride”.

NEW CITY PARK

missioN

coNtext

The Westwagenstraat in Rotterdam is located in the central district of the city, among the most visited areas of Rotterdam. even though the street is located in a prime location within the city centre, the street doesn’t function optimally due to several obstacles. The street isn’t visually attractive or interesting to visitors.

The main mission was to rehabilitate the street and unite it with the central district. Also to provide it with a new programme that fits the location, the vision of the municipality, and also effect the visitors of Rotterdam.

The municipality has a great vision for Rotterdam district Laurenskwartier. They aim to create Laurenskwartier as the new “City lounge” area for professional visitors. Transforming the public outdoor space to higher and much more precious areas.

The goals of municipality are visible in the present motions. There are currently a few projects planned: creating City Park in front of the Laurenskerk; uplifting the Binnerotte and uplifting the Coolsingel with greenery and social programs. The metaphor of the core intensions for the vision of Laurenkwartier are based on, the evolving of the city into a vital quality space, where the visitors can meet each other, and they can have the amusement. In essense the space should contribute to the quality of living in Rotterdam.

The concept of “Upgrade by downgrade” is focused on the vision of Rotterdam, to provide the city with the motion and encouragement of living a qualitatively better life. The motion is there to fil in the gap that has been created by urban context.

The downgrading of the site is based on demolishing the small scale buildings and leaving the monument protected towers. This will provide the site with the monumental nascence and in the meantime it will enhance the street view, by creating public space and introducing new sights that interact with the location.

The upgrade is based on bringing back the disapering insect, who formed the base in our diversity of food chains, the solitary bee. The solitary bees are responsible for pollinating 80% of the plants, and they have provided us with 2/3 of different vegetables and fruits. Because of this pollination a polyculture and biodiversity arises, this will provide the city with rich public yards and healthy environment.

The disappearing of the bees finds its origin in how we have affected the nature. Throughout the development of the city, we have withdrawn the food sources of the bees with different aspects. We did it by using pesticides, providing a seamless monoculture of food courtyard, and the urbanization of the city. The combination of these aspects have affected the bees in a negative way.

The future city park is embedded in a concept (“Upgrade by downgrade”) and enlarge it up to Westwageningstraat. This will create the opportunity for encountering the canal and building a bridge that combines the two parts with each other. On the meeting point of two parts there will be a pavilion realized.

The pavilion has several functions: firstly to provoke the interest of the visitors, secondly being functional as beehive and possible to harvest the honey and last, to educate visitors in the need of bees and the effect they have on us. This is translated into several experiences.

within the pavillion you can safely interact with the bees, for example seeing how the beehive functions within. On the facade you can find the information and billboards.

This pavilion is connected with the two shops, “the bees’ knees” and “its Rotterdam honey”. Within those two shops you can buy products generated by the bees. Products as honey, candles and starting set for bee keepers.

missioN studies

Indonesia is known by its beautiful nature, culture and different experiences you can encounter throughout the different islands. The island Flores is blooming and is quickly getting rather popular with tourists. The site for the location of Eco resort is placed near the Molo Straight in the great wild jungle.

So the main mission was to find the essence of the relation between the target audiences and the natural context of the site. Once the essence has been found, the architecture can be implemented as answer for the use and reveal it in the experience that you can encounter.

The site is located far away from cities, therefore it has qualities to disconnect from everyday life pressures. The disconnection of the city encloses the tourists with other aspects, mainly by the encounter with: different variation of landscapes, the surrounding wilderness and the people that have the same affection for nature.

It’s a common thought that tourists seek the places with a strong relation of environment, to experience the beauty of the wildlife and to feel the extraordinary. But why do those people seek this kind of experience? This questions leads to a much broader study. So within this reasoning the following questions have been formed: why are those people seeking this experiences; what are their motives; and what goes true their mind, has lead into base of the concept. “Uplift yourself”

20+ DIleMMa

The study lead to a lot of clearness and focus for main purpose and the design structure of the Eco resort. The tourists have been devided in hypothetical mind sets : 20+ dilemma, midlife crisis and lovebirds.

These are type of people that are starting a relationship or already have one. They are mostly focused on eachother, and are seeking to build experience with eachother. The subtraction of resort and the intimacy between eachother is their highest priority.

These are the type of people who are for example at the end of their study, and are not yet ready to take the next step to adulthood, like applying for a job or continuing in their studies. They are simply scared of making these big decisions, that can influence there whole life. Before making these big decisions they want to experience the world, get motivated and inspired. These are people who are looking for social interaction and to be close to other humans and active life setting. A scope of age difference between (20-30) years.

These are the type of people who doubt the decisions they have made. Those decisions could be based on career choices, romances they had and the social disclosure they had sacrificed. It’s the moment of realization of things you could have done, what leads to doubt, frustration and unclearness in your head. These are people who are looking for social interaction, but also have the opportunity to seclude themselves and be on their own.

20+ diLemma

The slope of the hill and the variation of natural vegetation, in a way instruct the usage of the plan site. At the bottom of the hill, where the current Molo straight is located, you can find open space. This provides the possibility for creating social activities and programming for the site. Walking upward the hill you disclose yourself from the social group, but encounter the beauty and privateness of the jungle forest.

The architecture of the living space has been intentionally provided with minimum luxury, only the essential are implemented like: bed, space for personal storage and the quality of each shelter. The reasoning is to challenge the visitors to encounter the wilderness of the nature.

The living space of 20+ dilemma is based on social levels, where the steps of transitions provide you the difference between public and private. These steps give the freedom of choosing your own sociability. you have 3 stages based on privacy and publicness. At the 1st stage you are in your own shelter (cocoon) where u can rest and be on your own. On the second stage you are in company of your social group. At the 3rd stage you are on the same level as all the residents of the resort and gives you a opportunity to engage with all visitors.

The lovebirds nest is provided with ultimate privacy. It is lifted from the ground into the sky. This provides the sense of romance, where the lovebirds are the only one being in their nest and have the sight on everything but are personally can’t be seen directly. The lovebird nest main goal is to hypothetically represent romance, intimacy and engagement with eachother. Summarized in a quote it is “them vs world”.

So the path to the lovebirds should be an experience of it’s own, a romantic experience that they can share together. Within this reasoning is the idea of placing a lift involved. The lift is based on a pulley system, where the lovebirds should work as one and pull themselves up in the sky. The lift cage is provided of safety ropes in case of an emergency and a shelf for quick access of essentials, to provide the unneeded lifts each day.

midLife crisis

Lovebirds

The living space of midlife crisis is based on the flow of transitions between public, semi-public and private. The flow of transition combines the aspects public and private. Those two contrast are getting embedded with eachother in order to create new space. This new space provokes a sense of being private and unseen and at the same time it offers open sight like in a public space. The main entrance of the shelter is sliced to give an open and inviting impression. The slice can also be used as a sitting plateau, so the visitor has the possibility to interact with other visitors. Looking perpendicular from the main road at the shelter, the sight continues. But when the angle of your sight changes, the sight is interrupted by the closely spaced wooden verticals beams, this provides you with a sense of being private while also being fully open to nature.
