Introduction: Even assuming a significant role in prevention model in Brazilian health, oral cancer continues to raise the rates of morbid- ity and mortalit y, becoming a national public health problem.

Objectives: To examine changes in the mouths of individu als in the population, seek and identify the presence of lesions, minor or not,and raise awarene ss about the risks of oral cancer.

Methods: 21,018 patients over 30 years of age in 98 municipaliti esin Paraná were examined between 1989 and 2011, and fragmented 5in 5 years. This period from 2004 to 2008. A questionn aire was won- dering about education , family income, often the dentist, prevention of oral cancer, alcoholism, smoking and consump tion of mate. Data such as sex and race. On clinical examina tion were observed : com- plete dentures, oral hygiene and oral lesions, and informa tion about oral cancer.

Results: We evaluate d 1826 individual s, of whom 54.9% female and 45.1% male, 94.4% were Caucasi an and 58.4% reported a family income less than two minimum wages per month. Regarding educa- tion 190 (50.7%) had incomplete primary education, 9 (21.1%) high school, 51 (13.6%) college, 55 (14.6%) were illiterate. Sent the 375 (20.5%) patients with suspicious lesions. Of these, 123 (33.2%)inflammatory, 167 (45%) traumatic , 63 (17%) leukoplak ic, 02 (0.5%)and 12 red lesions (3.2%) others. The frequency was reported tothe dentist: 85 (22.7%) with only pain, 97 (25.8%) will not, 53(14.1%) were edentulous, 79 (21.1%) once a year and 61 (16.3%) once every two years. We also collected data on poor oral hygiene 35.9%;denture 65.4%; 17.6% alcohol, smoking 20.3%, 36.0% consumption mate. Some people had never heard of prevention of oral cancer 28 (7.5%), since 81 (21.6%) have made preven tion and 266 (70.9%)never did.

Conclusion: Although effective , cancer prevention campaigns Hos- pital Erastus Gaertner serve only a small segment of the population.

Objectives: To examine the oral cavity of individu als in the popu- lation and educate them about the risks of oral cancer.

Methods: 21,018 patients older than 30 years old, of 98 municipal- ities in the state of Paraná, were examined between 1989 and 2011,being fragment ed into groups of 5 in 5 years. This work presents the group evaluated between 1989 and 1993. A questionnair e was won- dering about education, family income, often the dentist, preventi onof oral cancer, alcoholi sm, smoking and consumption of mate, and data such as gender and ethnicity. On clinical examina tion were observed : complete dentures, oral hygiene and oral lesions.

Results: We evaluated 1698 individuals and 68.2% women and 31.8% men; Caucasi ans totaled 91.2% and 81.7% earned less finishedhigh school, 28 (9.2%) high school, 13 (4.3% ) college and 76 (24.9%)were illiterate . We found 305 (18%) lesions in patients between 31and 60 years (71.5%), which were subseq uently forwarded. Of these injuries, 42 (13.8%) were inflammatory; 143 (46.9%) traumatic, 118 (38.75%) and other leukoplak ic 02 (0.7%). Asked about visits to the dentist, 81 (26.6%) only go when they have pain, 118 (38.6%) donot go to the dentist, 38 (12.5%) were edentulo us, 45 (14.8%) 1 goto the dentist once a year, 23 (7.5%) once every 2 years. They wore denture 226 (92.25%). The percentages refer to habits: 12.75% alco- hol, 27.5% tobacco and 33.1% consump tion mate. The prevention oforal lesions was approache d and 66 people (21.6%) had never heard of prevention of oral cancer, 88 (28.9%) had already made preventi onand 151 (49.5%) had never been examined.

Conclusion: Campa igns cancer prevention assist healthcare profes- sionals in preventing neoplast ic lesions and identification ofprecancer ous.
