IntroductionIntroduction

Intra-venous route is often used for anesthesia of small and large

animals as well as for inoculation of pharmaceutical products, extract of

compound, nanoparticles and viruses to the animals. It is important for

one to master the skill of administering drugs to rodents (mice and rats)

through intra-venous route since these animals are widely used as test

subjects in many experiments. In addition, if one is able to apply the

technique accurately, the number of animals used per group can be

reduced. The data derived from the experiment is also reproducible and

convincing. Although various methods and techniques have been

introduced for administration of substance through intra-venous route,

however; no methods are perfect until now.

This workshop is organized by LARU & LASAM, and has been

conducted by Laboratory Animal Resource Unit, Faculty of Medicine,

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for almost 10 years. The course has

benefited many participants from local higher institutions in Malaysia. The

workshop is targeted for young scientists, researchers, and students

currently conducting research projects using animals. The workshop is

limited to 50 participants. This two-day workshop covers theory and

practical aspects of intra-venous route administration of anesthetic drugs

on mouse, rat and rabbits. It is a must for the participant to experience

and to learn this new technique before one embarks on any animal

experiment.

Course Objective

To obtain basic and advanced knowledge of intra-venous

inoculation and anesthesia in rodents (mice, rats and rabbits).
