IMMIGRATION

APPLYING FOR VISA

Exchange students must obtain exchange student visa BEFORE entering Korea. Please apply for your visa assoon as you receive the acceptance package. Entering Korea with a tourist visa and then changing to D-2-6 visa in Korea is NOT permitted.

Single-entry Visa

You can enter Korea only ONCE.You cannot travel outside of Korea until you obtain an Alien Registration Card (ARC), which may be issued around 2nd week of April. If you apply for single-entry visa, do not make travel plans outside of Korea in February –beginning of April.

Multiple-entry Visa

You can enter and re-enter Korea multiple times.You can travel outside of Korea even before you obtain ARC. You still need to obtain ARC after entering Korea as all foreigners staying in Korea for more than 90 days are required to have it. Multiple-entry visa does not exempt you from the obligation to obtain ARC.

NOTE ON VISA ENTRY TYPE1. Check with the Korean consulate or embassy in your region if it is possible to get a

multiple-entry visa if you wish to travel before your Alien Registration Card (ARC) isissued. In some countries, only single-entry visas are granted due to agreementbetween the countries. In case you travel outside of Korea before your get your ARC,you will need to get a new D-2-6 visa from abroad to enter Korea.

2. If you enter Korea with a single-entry visa and transit to other countries, your D-2-6visa will expire and you will need to get another D-2-6 visa from abroad before thesemester starts. Make sure not to transit in Korea.

3. If you have no plans to travel outside of Korea until around the 2nd week of April, asingle-entry visa is fine. You can travel later on when you receive your ARC.

When you receive your acceptance package, please check if your personal information (name, birthdate,etc.) is correctly stated on the Letter of Acceptance and Certificate of Admission.

Sogang University (Meaning Admission approved by Sogang)

NOTICE FOR KOREAN DESCENDANTS• If your nationality is non-Korean but if you are a Korean descendant, then you must inquire the nearest

Korean consulate or embassy ASAP regarding your nationality and the type of visa you must obtain.

• According to the Nationality Act of Korea, although your nationality is currently not Korean or never hasbeen to your knowledge, if your parents’ nationality is Korean at the time of your birth, you areconsidered to have a dual citizenship and a Korean within the Korean territory.

1) If you were born BEFORE Jun 14 1998: If your father’s nationality is Korean at the time of yourbirth, you are considered to have a dual citizenship.

2) If you were born AFTER Jun 14 1998: If your father’s or mother’s nationality is Korean at thetime of your birth, you are considered to have a dual citizenship.

• If you have a dual citizenship, you may be required to make a Korean passport and enter Korea with it.

• Clarifying your dual citizenship may be complicated and time-consuming, and therefore you shouldinquire the Korean consulate as soon as possible. Make sure to have information on your parents’citizenship at the time of your birth and date of your parents’ naturalization (if any) before asking theKorean consulate. Note that this process is entirely in the hand of the Korean consulate as Office ofInternational Affairs has no information on your family background.

• When you enter Korea, make sure to bring photocopies of all the documents that you have submittedto Korean consulate since the Immigration Office in Korea may also ask for these documents again.

NOTICE FOR STUDENTS FROM HIGH TUBERCULOSIS RISK COUNTRIESThe Ministry of Justice Korea requires international students from high Tuberculosis risk countries to taketuberculosis test at hospitals designated by the Korean embassy or consulate in your country and submit thetest results when applying for your visa.Students from the following 18 countries must submit the TB test results when applying for your visa:Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Vietnam,Thailand, Russia, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, China, Sri Lanka, East Timor, Kirgizstan.

Group Application

After the semester begins, OIA will receive ARC application from exchange students and apply on your behalf.- For collecting ARC, you must visit Immigration office individually to

get your fingerprints registered as well.

Individual Application

You must visit Immigration Office individually and apply for ARC.- If you wish to apply on your own- If your family name is similar to a Korean family name (e.g. Kim,

Lee, Park, Go, etc.)

Process takes

It takes about 4 weeks.You must visit Immigration Office with jurisdiction over your residence to collect your ARC. Your fingerprints will be registered when you collect your ARC from immigration Office. Details will be explained at the Orientation.

Re-entry Permit

D-2-6 visa holders are permitted multiple entries to Korea for as long as the visa is valid on the condition that he/she is a registered foreigner in Korea through the Korea Immigration Service. This enables international students to travel to other countries and re-enter Korea without applying for re-entry permits each time he/she re-enters Korea. In other words, you can go abroad and re-enter Korea only after you have obtained your Alien Registration Card. Make sure that you do not go abroad until you obtain ARC if you hold a Single-entry visa.

ALIEN REGISTRATION

Alien Registration is a legal registration with the immigration authorities in Korea. All foreigners intending to stay in Korea for more than 90 days are subject to Alien Registration. All exchange students coming to Sogang University must apply for Alien Registration Card after entering Korea as one semester is about 16 weeks long.

NOTICE FOR KOREAN DESCENDANTSKorean descendants must apply for either “Overseas Korean Report of Domestic Residence” (F-4 visa holder)or Alien Registration (D-2-6 visa holder) depending on your visa type.

Make sure to bring the following documents from home:• A photocopy of your parents’ naturalization certificate (if available)• A photocopy of your birth certificate• Any other document that verifies your parents’ and your nationality• Photocopies of all documents you have submitted to Korean consulate at the time of applying for

visa• A photocopy of your parents’ passport

INSURANCE

Students should have already uploaded a copy of their health insurance certificate when submitting theonline application form. Students who have not yet submitted their insurance certificates must purchasean insurance plan that is valid in Korea during the entire period of their exchange and send a scanned copyof the insurance certificate to [email protected] by January 16, 2017.

When submitting insurance certificate, students must make sure that the document they upload containsthe following information:

- Name of the student- Insurance coverage area (worldwide or Korea)- Insurance coverage period (must be valid during the total period of stay in Korea)

An insurance card that only states the student’s name is not sufficient to prove that the student haspurchased an insurance plan for his/her exchange semester. Above three elements must be clearly statedin the documents that students submit.

Students who do not have valid insurance must get the health insurance (Joongang INS Korea) designatedby Sogang University. It is however, strongly recommended that you purchase an insurance from yourcountry before coming to Korea. If you cannot purchase insurance in your home country, you mustinform the Office of International Affairs by sending an e-mail to [email protected] will give you instructions on how to purchase the insurance that we have.

All students must be responsible for their own health and safety. It is very important that you take note

of your own insurance claims and the coverage as well as the important contact numbers that you might

need during your stay in case of any emergency. Take note of basic safety precautions since it may be

your first time living on your own away from home for a long period of time.

COURSE INFORMATION & REGISTRATION

Courses are offered in both Korean and English at Sogang University. About 20~30% of all courses areoffered in English. Exchange students can take courses in English that are open to exchange students.Some students who are proficient in Korean can take courses offered in Korean but this would require avery high level of Korean proficiency (higher than TOPIK 4).

Exchange students can take minimum 9 credits to maximum 19 credits per semester. A typical course atSogang University is given 3 credits.• 3-credit course = 45 contact hours per semester• Minimum and maximum workload per semester includes the Korean language course (either 3 credits

or 12 credits) offered at Korean Language Education Center.• Students taking the intensive Korean language course (KAP200) must register for at least one academic

course from the University to maintain status as an exchange student.

FULL TIME STUDY AND CREDITS PER SEMESTER

RESTRICTED COURSESSome courses are restricted to incoming exchange students. These restrictions are determined by therespective academic department/faculty. Therefore, students must select “courses for exchange students”when viewing the course list.Courses from our Law School, special graduate schools and professional graduate schools except forSogang Business School (MBA) and Graduate School of International Studies are restricted to exchangestudents. Courses from our Art & Technology department are restricted to exchange students fromuniversities that do not have a direct bilateral agreement with our Department of Art & Technology. Ifyour university does not have an agreement with our Art & Technology department, you will only be ableto take Art & Technology courses if there are spots available during the course change period when thesemester starts.

Undergraduate students:• Undergraduate students can only take courses from the Undergraduate School.• Undergraduate students cannot take courses from any of the Graduate Programs.

Graduate students:• Graduate students can take courses from Undergraduate and Graduate programs.• Graduate courses from the Graduate School, Graduate School of Business and Graduate School of

International Studies are only available to graduate students. Courses from other graduate programs arenot open to exchange students.

Although most of the course syllabi will be available before the course registration period, there could besome courses that take longer for the course syllabus to be uploaded online. In that case, please see if thesame course has been offered in previous semesters and use the course information of the previoussemester for your reference.

COURSE REGISTRATION

COURSE REGISTRATION PERIODOnline Course Registration (Undergraduate School & Graduate School)Exact dates will be notified through e-mail and the notice board on the application site.• Spring semester: January 24 ~ 25• Fall semester: around end of JulyOffline Course Registration (Graduate School of Business & Graduate School of International Studies)Courses from the Graduate School of Business and Graduate School of International Studies cannot beregistered online. Course registration for theses courses will be done when the semester starts. Students willhave to attend the courses that they wish to take and receive approval from the professors on the courseregistration form that will be provided at the orientation upon arrival.

※ Students will have a chance to change their courses during the course revision period when the semesterbegins. However, since popular courses are filled up quickly, it is imperative that students do their courseregistration during the registration period before the start of the semester.

Course registration is done online through Sogang University’s SAINT Portal system. However, courseregistration for courses from the Graduate School of Business and Graduate School of International Studiesis done offline when the semester begins.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO CHECK BEFORE COURSE REGISTRATION• Check your student ID number and SAINT password (This will be provided by a separate e-mail later)• Make a list of courses that you wish to take considering the course schedule. Write down the course title,

subject code and academic session. Courses that clash in time cannot be registered.• Double check the course registration period and time since course registration is on first-come first-served

basis. It is rather competitive to get into some of the popular courses, so it is highly recommended that youlog in promptly when the registration begins.

• Please have additional 2 or 3 courses in mind in case you do not get the courses you wish to take.• Please note that some courses might get cancelled or class schedules might change. There is a course

revision period when the semester starts, so do not worry too much.• For those students who wish to take courses offered in Korean (not Korean language courses), please

contact [email protected]• Check that you have Internet Explorer on your computer. You must use Internet Explorer as your browser

when viewing and registering courses. Other browsers will not work.

GETTING FAMILIAR WITH SAINT PORTAL SYSTEMIn order to do the online course registration, students must learn how to use Sogang’s SAINT Portal system.You will be using this system throughout the semester for your academic management such as checkingclass schedules, attendance, grades, etc.

Students will receive an e-mail with the course registration dates and their log-in information to SAINTportal. Students must log into SAINT Portal before doing their course registration. Please make sure thatyou do not log into SAINT for the first time on the day course registration begins. Please log in couple ofdays prior to the registration so that you do not panic in case you face problems in logging in.

Use Internet Explorer as your browser at all times.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR COURSES ONLINE

Go to Sogang University website http://www.sogang.ac.kr and click on “Course Registration” banner.

CLICK

When you click on Course registration banner below page will appear. Enter your SAINT ID (Student IDnumber) and password. Please make sure that you are not logged into SAINT Portal when logging in forcourse registration. The site will block log-in in this case.

※ Please note that you can access the Course Registration site only during the course registrationperiod. If you try to log-in before or after the course registration period, the system will reject your log-in.

After log-in, below page will appear. Make sure to change the settings to English by clicking on the “English” button in the upper right corner.

Enter the characters and click on “Enter” button.

1. Before you begin, prepare a list of subjects you wish to take. You should remember the subject codeand title of the courses. Double check that the courses do not clash in time.

2. Select “Subject No.”3. Enter the subject code of the course list e.g. AMC3055 and click on search.4. If you do not know the subject No. of the course, you can skip steps 2 and 3 and search for the course

by selecting the “Position” tab.5. Check course title and session of the course. There may be several different sessions of the same

course so make sure to select the correct session.6. If the course status is green, it means that there is available space in the course so you can register.7. If the course status is red, you cannot register for the course since the quota is already full.8. Click on the Subject name of the course you wish to register and it will be added to your course list on

the bottom of the page.9. If you wish to delete a course from the list, you can do so by simply clicking on the delete button that

looks like a trash can. Please note that when you delete a course, the quota will be given to otherstudents so please double check before you delete a course.

After you finish registering for the courses you wish to take, please log out and go to your SAINT portal tocheck if courses have been registered correctly.http://saint.sogang.ac.kr

You can see the courses that have been registered in the system. Make sure that you select the correct academic year and semester.

You can view your course schedule by clicking on “My Course Schedule” on the left hand column. You can also download your time table in Microsoft Excel format.

Please make sure to save a copy of your registered course list after your course registration. You will not be able to see your course list for a while until the semester begins so please remember to save a copy.

Exchange students can take Korean language program at our Korean Language Education Center (KLEC).

Office of International Affairs offers scholarships to exchange students who wish to take Korean language

course at our KLEC. The scholarship covers the tuition fee for the Korean language course and the amount

differs depending on the course that students choose to take. It is not mandatory for exchange students to

take the Korean language course. Students must take the heavy workload into consideration before applying:

only students who are dedicated to learning Korean and completing this course should apply.

Korean Language Education Center (KLEC) offers ten-week language sessions 4 times a year. However, Office

of International Affairs subsidizes the language course tuition only during the regular semesters (fall and

spring). Students who wish to take Korean language course during the summer and winter vacation must

register directly through KLEC and pay full tuition.

INTENSIVE KOREAN LANGUAGE PROGRAM (KOREAN FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES KAP200)

This course is designed to facilitate the natural acquisition of the necessary grammar, vocabulary, writing

skills, knowledge of Korean culture, and other useful information through the study of academic subjects.

Through this course, students will prepare for and learn about university life in Korea. The course is four

hours per day, broken down into 1 hour of writing (academic writing from level 3 onward), 2 hours of

speaking, and 1 hour of listening and reading. (The exact breakdown of the course varies according to level.)

Course Korean Language for Academic Purposes (KAP200)

Schedule Mon-Fri (5 times per week) for 10 weeks

Levels 1-6

Fee Tuition waived through scholarship, Textbook KRW50,000 - KRW65,000

Credit 12 credits

Only students majoring or minoring in Korean Language or Korean Studies will be allowed to register

for the intensive program (KAP200). Transcripts that student submit upon application will be used to

determine the area of study. Students who study East Asian Studies or International Studies with a focus

on Korea must submit a recommendation letter stating that the student needs to take KAP200 for the

student’s academic plan.

However, there is a deposit payment –USD 300 (which will be returned when students meet the

minimum requirement of 80% attendance with passing grade of 70%) that all students need to pay in

order to register for the Korean language course.

If students with other majors wish to take KAP200, they are not subject to our scholarship and thus will

have to pay 100% tuition to our KLEC directly.

Students taking KAP200 must register for at least one regular course(3 credits) from the university

undergraduate or graduate program in addition to the language course in order to maintain their status as

an exchange student. If a student intentionally fails the university course by receiving an FA (Failure due

to absences) and only attends the language course, the student will not be able to maintain his/her

status as an exchange student and thus encounter visa issues.

EVENING KOREAN LANGUAGE PROGRAM (KOREAN FOR GENERAL PURPOSES KGP60)

This course particularly reflects the demands of students who are working in Korea or exchange students, andincludes language that is frequently used in the workplace and in schools to help those students achieve theirgoals. Courses are held three times a week, and the materials are light, enjoyable, engaging, and helpful tostudents.

Course Korean Language for General Purposes (KGP60)

Schedule Mon, Thu, Fri (3 times per week) for 10 weeks

Levels 1-6

Fee Tuition fee USD 300, Textbook KRW50,000 - KRW65,000

Credit 3 credits

Students taking KGP60 will be offered around 50% scholarship and will thus only need to pay USD300

to register for the course. There is no deposit payment required for students taking KPG60.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Students must inform the OIA if you wish to cancel your registration for Korean language program. Pleasesend an e-mail to [email protected] stating that you wish to cancel your registration. Please indicatewhich course you have registered for. You will then receive a confirmation mail. Please note that yourcancellation is not finalized if you do not receive this confirmation mail. If students wish to cancel theirregistration before the registration deadline, they can simply do so by modifying their application formonline.

Cancellation fee for Korean language course will be as follows.Cancellations fees will be deducted from the tuition or deposit students have paid, according to the chartbelow.

Refunds will only be made to your Korean bank account in Korean Won, after you arrive at Sogang.

If you happen to cancel your exchange term at Sogang, you will then be able to receive the amount youpaid to your home account but please note that you will have to bear international transfer fees andother transaction costs incurred.

PAYMENTDormitory fee must be paid upon arrival at Sogang University through a local bank transfer. International transfer, checks, credit cards or any other formsof payment are NOT accepted. Students either have to open a Korean bank account and make a transferthrough the Korean account or withdraw cash and make a transfer at a local bank in Korea. CANCELLATION POLICY• Students who wish to cancel their dormitory application must notify the Office of International Affairs

before January 30, 2017. Any cancellations after the date will be subject to cancellation charges accordingto the regulations of Gonzaga Hall.

• If a student moves out of the dormitory after check in, student will have to pay the penalty charge as wellas the fees for room and meal plan that the student has consumed during his/her stay at Gonzaga.

• In case a student refuses to pay the billed cancellation charge/penalty charge/room & meal plan,transcripts will not be issued after the end of the semester.

CHECK-IN & CHECK-OUTStudents are allowed to check into Gonzaga Hall only during the designated move-in hours. Gonzaga has avery strict move-in policy so if you arrive earlier or later than the designated move-in period, please makesure to find temporary accommodation where you can stay until the move-in hours.

UR Seoul ResidenceStudents can also choose to live off-campus at UR Seoul Residence. It is a residence for internationalstudents located near Seoul Station which is about 20 minutes (by subway) away from campus. COST OF LIVING

Below is a table with the estimated cost of living in Korea. Please note that it is only an estimate and theactual costs will depend on your lifestyle.

CLIMATE

Korea has four distinct seasons: spring (March-May), summer (June-August), fall (September-November),and winter (December-February). Spring is the transition period between winter and summer. Averagetemperatures in spring range between 7.1℃ and 17.8℃. The weather remains chilly in March due to the lastcold snaps, but begins warming up at the end of the month. Summer is the hottest season. Receiving themajority of annual rainfall, it is also the wettest season. In fact, summer begins with the rainy season called‘jangma’, which generally lasts from mid-June until the end of July. During jangma, umbrellas and raincoatsare essential. Fall, referred to as the season of ‘cheongomabi’*, is the transition period between summerand winter. Humidity subsides and cold snaps return. As in late-May, the weather in early September iswarm. Then, it turns colder and drier starting late-September, contributing to the changing of colors ofleaves throughout October. Winter is the coldest season. The northern region, largely comprised ofGangwon-do and Gyeonggi-do Provinces as well as Seoul and Incheon Metropolitan Cities, is generally colderthan the southern region including Busan Metropolitan City and Jeju Island.

BANKING

It can be difficult to use foreign banks in Korea. There are branches of foreign banks in Seoul but many ofthem handle corporate customers only. Please make sure to bring a debit card or credit card that can beused in Korea. You must check before your departure whether the card that you will bring can be used inKorea.

MOBILE PHONES

Students can purchase prepaid SIM cards. Students must remember to unlock the “COUNTRY LOCK” in theirphones BEFORE coming to Korea. Phones cannot be unlocked in Korea, so it is imperative that you unlockyour phone in your country if you wish to use it in Korea.

PAYMENT METHODSDebit cards and credit cards are widely used as payment methods in Korea. Most credit cards, including Visa,MasterCard, American Express, etc are widely accepted. If you plan to use the debit card from your homecountry, please check with your bank at home and use the card that is accepted in Korea. There are ATMsin convenience stores and subway stations which may accept international debit cards but please note thatno all ATMs will accept international cards.

OPENING A BANK ACCOUNTIt is not mandatory for students to create a Korean bank account. However, students taking the Koreanlanguage course (KAP200) must open a Korean bank account in order to get their deposits back at the endof the semester. Office of International Affairs will help you create a Korean bank account and explain theprocedure at the orientation, so you do not need to worry.The campus bank is Woori Bank, so students will be opening a Woori Bank savings account when they createa bank account upon arrival.

If you want to rent a cell phone during your stay in Korea, you will have to do so after you get your AlienRegistration Card.

H.U.G is Sogang University’s biggest student organization founded in 2004, hosting numerous fun activitiesfor international students and Korean students to understand and adjust to the Korean culture and learn theKorean language. Such events include field trips, tutoring events, buddy events, MT (2 day getaway outsideof Seoul) and much more! All exchange students are welcome to join H.U.G and participate in variousactivities. H.U.G highly recommends you to pay a participation fee at the beginning of the semester toparticipate in H.U.G events without restraints. Details regarding the planned activities and the payment willbe explained by H.U.G later when you arrive!

Students should submit “Arrival Information Form” through the online application site after purchasing flightticket to Korea. Students can request for airport reception that is offered by our student organization H.U.G.HUG will meet you at the airport and bring you to campus. Please note that airport reception is only offeredon designated arrival dates and students are responsible for their own transportation costs (Airportlimousine bus). Students who request airport pick-up will receive an e-mail from H.U.G regarding pick-updetails before departure.

PICK UP INSTRUCTIONS

Incheon International Airport is the primary international airport serving Seoul. Most international flights,except for a few from Tokyo Haneda and Shanghai Hongqiao, come through Incheon airport. If you haverequested HUG pick-up service, make sure you exit through the designated exit and meet H.U.G students atthe designated meeting spot. You will receive an e-mail from H.U.G regarding the meeting spot. If you donot find your greeter, don’t panic. Wait at the meeting spot for a few minutes and try calling the greeter. Ifyou do not have a cell phone, please go to one of the Information Desks with a big “I” sign above. There isone between Exits A and B and another between Exits E and F.Make sure to ask your greeter (H.U.G member) for his/her mobile number in advance so that you cancontact him/her in case you get lost. Please give the telephone number and the name of your greeter to theperson at the Information Desk and ask the person to call your greeter. There are two ways you can get from Incheon International Airport to Sogang University if you do notrequest for airport reception by HUG or use the chauffeured airport pick-up service.

Find the Airport railroad station at the airport and take either the Express train or All stop train to GongdeokStation. It takes less time if you take the Express Train.

Get off at Gongdeok Station and transfer to subway Line 6 (Eungam direction) and get off at DaeheungStation. Find your way to Exit 1 of Daeheung Station and walk to the back gate of Sogang University. It takesapproximately 5 to 7 minutes.If you do not wish to walk, you can simply take a taxi from Gongdeok Station to Sogang University. ExitGongdeok Station through Exit 2 and take a cab from there. It takes about 5 minutes to get to campus andthe fare is around KRW3,500.
