How  This  Convening  Differs

The  NaLonal  Postsecondary  Strategy  InsLtute  (NPSI)  is  focused  on  the  strategies,  structures,  accountability,  and  sustainability  mechanisms  for  a  district  to  mobilize  stakeholders  and  advance  college  and  career  outcomes.          District  teams  will  be  engaged  in  three  ways  throughout  NPSI:    •  InformaLon  sessions  on  strategies,  structures,  accountability,  and  sustainability  mechanisms    •  Role-‐alike  sessions  where  district  administrators  will  meet  with  people  in  similar  roles  in  other  districts    •  Team  planning  Lme  where  district  teams  will  have  Lme  to  reflect  and  work  on  their  own  district  plan  with  support  from  NPSI  consultants

TEAM  TIME  –  RULES  OF  ENGAGEMENT  Establish  Team  Trust

• Commit  to  keeping  conversaLons  taking  place  among  team  members  confidenLal  regarding:  • Ideas  being  pursued  • Documents  produced  • Work  not  authorized  to  be  shared  or  published

Engage  In  Honest  Conversa9ons

• Honesty  and  integrity  are  highly  valued  ahributes  for  engendering  trust  and  respect  • Lack  of  honesty  is  a    work  stopper/deal-‐breaker  for  moving  forward  in  our  development  and  future  success

Foster    A  Culture  That  Enables  Every  Team  Member  To  Share  Their  Perspec9ves

• Foster  a  culture  where  everybody  walks  the  talk  and  nobody  walks  on  water.  • Foster  healthy  conflict  and  debate    that  ahack  the  problem,  not  the  person.

©Joyce  V.  Brown  ConsulLng  Group  -‐  All  Rights  Reserved  25

TEAM  TIME  –  RULES  OF  ENGAGEMENT

Acknowledge  Dysfunc9onal  Behavior

• DysfuncLonal  behavior  is  defined  as  conduct    the  majority  of  group  members  consider  as  an  impediment  to  the  work.

•  Key  Points  To  Remember:  • The  more  a  person  tries  to  protect  their  domain,  the  faster  you'll  lose  it.    Turf  wars  quickly  deteriorate  into  dysfuncLonal  silo  behavior  and  bunker  mentality.  It's  all  bad.

•  Influence  without  authority  or  control  is  the  true  test  of  leadership.

Don’t  sit  on  the  sideline  –  get  in  the  game.

• Take  responsibility  for  something.  • The  team  wins  when  we  all  play  and  play  by  the  same  rules.
