Destruction of organic matter increases atmospheric CO2, which may ormay not be a problem, but for the farmer, it very rapidly compromiseslong-term soil health. More corn is not better for anybody in the longterm.

Increasing corn production throws an already weak rotation out of kilter.Corn-on-corn allows serious pests, like corn rootworms, to crank uptheir populations in a hurry, requiring heavier use of insecticides to

control them. Disease pressures increase, and micronutrients such aszinc diminish rapidly. The reduction of nitrogen-fixing crops in therotation necessitates greater applications of chemical fertilizers, whichconsume immense amounts of energy to manufacture and in somecases including the very commonly used ammonia further destroysoil organic matter.

Ethanols growth has been so dramatic that there are now concerns

about the amount of corn available to meet various demands,including food, animal feed and export.

However, one of the most important emerging concerns is the

consumptive use of water. Consumptive use of water is broadlydefined as any use of water that reduces the supply from which it iswithdrawn or diverted. Consumptive water use by ethanol plantslargely comes from evaporation during cooling and wastewaterdischarge. As a rule of thumb, water utilization is 10 gallons per

minute for each 1 million gallons of yearly ethanol production. Thusa typical 50 million gallons per year ethanol plant would need 500gallons per minute of water [= 265 million gallons per year ofwater].

Minimal data is available on groundwater depletion, and the scopeof future water availability is not clear. It will be to the benefit of theethanol industry, and rural development initiatives in general, to getmore clarity on the relationship between ethanol production, waterconsumption, and impacts on water supplies.

During the 2008 food crisis, the average price of food increased43 percent, according to the U.S. Agency for InternationalDevelopment. Experts worry that low food stocks, high demandand food price volatility could lead to future food crises.

Biofuel from corn is capped at 15 billion gallons, so the cornethanol industry is not expected to expand much once the cap is

reached in 2015. The production of corn ethanol is notably inefficient, but the

government continues to subsidize its production. Meanwhile,Brazil produces far more efficient biofuel from sugarcane, butrepresentatives from the Brazilian biofuels industry say the U.S.use of tariffs prevents ethanol development.
