Verbs are said to be either ACTIVE or PASSIVE
ACTIVE: the Subject of the sentence is to do the action.
Sample sentences: Nissans employs 130,000 people.
PASSIVE: the Subject of the sentence is to receive the action.
Sample sentence: 130,000 people are employed by Nissans.

Sample sentences:
The new policy is approved by the executive committee.
“Hamlet” was written by Shakespeare.
Oh my god! My bike has been stolen!
The refrigerator will be repaired.
The form of “BE” varies according to the tenses of the sentences. In this lesson, we focus on the passive forms in The present simple, past simple, present perfect and future tense. Therefore, we will consider the form of “BE” in these tenses.

A new school will be built in the area.

Sample sentences:
Our books are printed in Singapore.
Most of our best fruit is exported.
How often are the machines serviced?
The past participle of regular verbs is the same as the past tense.
Past participle end in –ed:print – printed – printed export – exported – exported service – serviced - serviced
Irregular verbs have different patterns:
take – took – taken
make – made – made
forbid – forbade – forbidden
Sample sentences:
All our visitors are taken to the factory first.
This model is not made of aluminum.
Is smoking forbidden in your office?

The passive voice is used to describe actions:
When we don’t know the doer of the action.
My briefcase was stolen last night.
(I don’t know who stole it.)
When it is not important to know the doer of the action.
These televisions are made in Japan.
(We don’t need to know who makes them)
When we want to emphasize the doer of the action.
This dress is made by my mother, the one I love most.
(I’m proud of my mother, who makes this dress for me.)

When we do not know who was the doer of the action, forget about “BY”
Someone stole my bike. My bike was stolen.
When we are interested in the doer of the action, use “BY”
Mr Brown built the house. The house was built BY Mr Brown.

Roses are one of Kenya’s most important crops, and Kenya
