Lov i krivolov – ubijanje ptica grabljivica i sova – želja zatrofejem
Hunting and poaching – killing birds of prey and owls andthe desire for trophies
Birds of prey and owls are even today killed in many huntingzones because they are deemed pests and hunting competitors. Eventhough all birds of prey and owls are strictly protected, today they arenonetheless still mercilessly hunted and killed, which leads todeclining numbers in the wild.
Poisoning threatens an entire series of large birds of prey
Skupina strvinara, prvenstveno bjeloglavi sup ( )nestao je iz Nacionalnog parka Paklenica upravo zbog postavljanjazatrovanih mamaca. Donedavno je trovanje bila velika prijetnjaposljednjoj koloniji i jedinom hrvatskom utočištu ovih strvinara, naKvarnerskim otocima - Krku, Cresu, Plavniku i Prviću.
Gyps fulvus The carrion-eaters, primarily the Griffon Vulture ( ),have disappeared from Paklenica National Park precisely due to poisontraps. Until recently, poisoning was a major threat to the last colonyand sole Croatian refuge of these vultures on the Kvarner islands:Krk, Cres, Plavnik and Prvić.

Banding and telemetric marking methods constitute attempts tomonitor the migratory routes and winter feeding grounds of individualspecies to ensure better protection for individual endangered species.
Sve veća upotreba kemikalija u poljoprivredi nepovoljno djeluje ina ovu skupinu ptica.
Any substantial use of chemicals in agriculture has a negativeimpact on these birds. Chemicals in the tissue of birds of prey build upinto enormous concentrations which lead to a multitude of harmfulmetabolic changes, which are reflected in the success of nesting, number of chicks, etc.
Nagle temperaturne promjene, zatopljenja i zahlađenja, orkanski vjetrovi pridonose varijabilnosti uponudi hrane, izboru niša za vrijeme gniježđenja, a izravno utječu naveći mortalitet mladih ptica.
Global climate change caused by increasing human activity hasmanifested itself negatively among many species of birds of prey andowls, particularly migratory birds. The climatic conditions in theirwinter feeding grounds are changing. Drastic changes in temperature, warming, cooling and gale-force winds contribute to variations in foodsupply, the choice of niches during nesting and also lead to highermortality among young birds.
Kemikalije – pesticidi u poljoprivredi Agricultural chemicals and pesticides

Zaštita ptica grabljivica i sova još uvijek nije dovoljno učinkovita unašim zaštićenim područjima, posebno u nacionalnim parkovima iparkovima prirode.
Protection of birds of prey and owls is still not sufficiently effectivein Croatia's protected zones, particularly in national parks and natureparks. The simultaneous decline in numbers of individual species ofnesting birds, such as the GriffonVulture in Croatia and its extinction inPaklenica National Park at the close of the twentieth century, indicatethe neglect and extreme indifference of the local population towardanimal species and nature in general, and the inadequacy of protectionefforts. Popularization and education in small educational centers, such as this one in Mala Paklenica, are intended to raise awareness andturn the attention of various groups of visitors, particularly youngergenerations, children and students, to the importance of theseendangered species for whom protection is essential. It is high time topreserve and better protect not just habitats but also these valuableand diverse groups of birds, for if nothing is done even more of themwill become extinct.

Principal reasons for endangerment
Birds of prey and owls are today the most endangered groups ofbirds in Croatia. A large number of birds of prey and owls are threateneddue to human activity which directly impacts them or their habitats.
Habitat changes-habitat destruction, food shortages, construction power lines, windmills and highways
Ptice pripadaju među najvažnije pokazatelje ukupnog stanjaprirode. Njihova povezanost s područjem na kojem obitavaju čini ihupravo vrlo osjetljivim na vanjske utjecaje i promjene u staništima, pasu odlični bioindikatori kvalitete staništa i ekosustava.
Birds are among the most vital indicators of the overall health ofthe natural environment. Their bond with the territory in which theyreside makes them extremely sensitive to external impacts and habitatchange, so they are in fact excellent bio-indicators of habitat and eco-system quality.

Falconiformes
Birds of prey ( ) are predators, or hunters, and theyare at the top of the food chain. Today there are approximately 300species of these birds living throughout the world.
Most birds of prey actively hunt their prey in flight, or they feed oncarrion. Sharp vision and the position of their eyes enables them toquickly observe and accurately pinpoint their prey, while theirpowerful wings and maneuvering ability help them seize their prey, which they catch on land, in the water or air. They overpower animalsranging from insects to vertebrates with their powerful legs and feet, featuring three toes turned forward and one back, armed with sharptalons. A strong, bent beak with sharpened edges helps them tear theirprey into smaller pieces.
A total of 36 species of birds of prey have been recorded in Croatia, and out of these 16 are classified in various endangered speciescategories, and three species have even become extinct. So far, a totalof 22 species of birds of prey have been recorded in the territory ofPaklenica National Park.

Škanjac (Buzzard)
Birds of prey vary in size. While some are slim and aerodynamic, such as some small falcons no larger than a sparrow, others are heavywith wide wing spans, such as the Golden Eagle, with wing spansreaching 2.4 m. Most species have large heads, short necks, powerfulbent beaks with sharp edges to tear meat, and sturdy legs with sharptalons to catch their prey.

Precisely because they hunt by observation, birds of prey havevery sharp vision. Some species have vision that is at a minimum fourtimes stronger and more detailed than that of humans, so that they canspot their prey from great distances. For example, the American kestrelcan recognize a 5 cm long mouse from a distance of 275 m, or 0.6 cminsect from a distance of 34 m.
Ishrana
Većina ptica grabljivica hrani se velikim odličinki i puževa, do vodozemaca, sisavaca i drugih ptica. No, povremenose hrane i strvinama.

Diet
Most birds of prey feed on a wide variety of live animals, fromcaterpillars and snails, to amphibians, mammals and other birds. Evenso, sometimes they feed on carrion. Only a small number of species, such as the Griffon Vulture, feed exclusively on carrion. Some specieshave very specialized diets. The Honey Buzzard, for example, feeds onwasps and their larvae, while the White-tailed Eagle and Osprey feedon fish.

Today there approximately 200 species of owlsin the world. What sets owls apart from
most other birds is their adaptation to nocturnal activity.Well-developed hearing and vision, thick and softfeathers that enable virtually silent flight, and sharptalons to seize prey make it possible for them to functionas highly effective nocturnal predators. Only fortyspecies of owl are actively solely at day-time, mostly adawn and dusk, while the rest are active both at nightand during the day.
In Croatia, 11 species of owl have been recorded, ofwhich one, the Short-eared Owl iscritically endangered, while another species, the PygmyOwl has been listed asvulnerable. A total of six species of owl have beenrecorded in the territory of Paklenica National Park.

Mala ušara (Long-eared Owl)
Owls are recognizable by their rounded contours, upright posture, large heads and eyes positioned on the front of their heads, and shorttails. Their beaks are short and hooked and difficult to see in theirplumage. Their legs are strong and often covered with feathers, whilethey use their long, powerful bent talons to catch prey. All owls havesoft and thick feathers which makes their flight virtually silent.

Sove imaju izuzetno razvijenoosjetilo vida i sluha.
Owls have exceptionally sharp sight andhearing. Their large and very sensitive
eyes, which can make use of even thetiniest amounts of light, allow
them to detect and catch prey incomplete darkness. The owl'seyes are almost entirely on thefront of its head, so they can seein a manner similar to humansand precisely gauge thedistance of their prey.
Although they have no externalears, owls have the best hearing of
all birds. The reason for this is a largeinternal ear and a high number of
auditory nerve cells.
Ishrana

Diet
Most often they feed on tiny mammals, mainly rodents, but theyalso hunt birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects. Smaller species, suchas the Scops Owl ( ) and Little Owl ( ), feed oninsects, while larger species, such as the Eagle Owl ( ), catchlarger animals, like hedgehogs, rats, dormice and hares. Like otherbirds, owls have no teeth so they cannot chew their food. They thusswallow smaller animals whole, and use their beaks to tear apart largerprey. Indigestible parts such as bones and feathers are regurgitated aspellets.
