Q2: What features does the C-3030ZOOM have?A: Main features:

(1)Ultra high image quality: 1/1.8 inch type CCD, Total 3.34 millions pixel(2)Exposure mode: Various exposure modes making advanced shooting possible.

(Programmable, Aperture priority, Shutter priority, Manual setting)(3)Digital tele-mode: 3X optical zoom lens plus the 2.5X digital zoom make possible

photographs equivalent to 7.5X zoom.(4)Movie: Recording and playback of movies is possible:

Max. 360 seconds in SQ mode; Max. 88 seconds in HQ mode(5)Sound recording: Sound can be simultaneously recorded with a movie.

For still picture, sound recording is possible during or after shooting.(6)LCD monitor: 1.8 inch type, wide angle TFT LDC monitor.(7)Easy operation: With mode dial and menu screen, easy operation is achieved.(8)USB function: Either a serial or USB interface can be used for connecting to a PC.(9)

High speed processing: Recording time and playback time are shortened.(10) External flash: The connector that fits to the exclusive external flash FL-40 andhas communications capability is added.

Q3: What is the TTL iESP auto-focus system?A: This is an addition to the conventional centre-weighted contrast detection method. Thecentral section is divided into smaller areas to detect area-to-area variations of contrast. The result is intelligently analysed so that false metering information, caused by thebackground or empty space is prevented and a proper focus on the intended subject ispossible.

*iESP : Intelligent Electro Selective Pattern

Q4: Explain: Image Quality mode (Recording mode) settingA: Using an arbitrary combination of 5 types of image sizes and 3 types of compressionmodes (non-compression, lower-level compression, higher-level compression), the ImageQuality mode (Recording mode)can be set.

Q5: Explain: Quick shooting and the sequence mode of the C-3030ZOOMA: Quick shooting: One or two seconds after the shutter has been released in the normalmode, the next shot can be taken.Sequence shooting: Pictures can be taken in a sequence. The built-in SDRAM with a largecapacity of 32 MB makes possible sequence shooting at high speeds, about 3.3

frames/sec., in all modes, except TIFF mode. The following should be noted:(1)To eliminate the effect of camera shake, a shutter speed should be set at a faster

    shutter speed than 1/30 sec.

  • 8/7/2019 QA_C3030ZOOM

    5/19

    5

This means a dark subject may appear even darker than when shooting in normalmode.

(2)When the extension flash is used, it is recommended to adjust the flash settingsto match the sequence shooting speed.

    (3) In the case of AF sequential shooting, the shutter speed is reduced.

    (4) Note that the built-in flash can not be used.

Q6: Explain: digital zoom modeA: Set the digital zoom mode to ON and set the optical zoom to 3X, then a maximum zoom

effect of 7.5X can be achieved. Note: In digital zoom mode, the images may lose someof their quality depending on the conditions.

Q7: Explain: Connection terminal for an extension flash.A: The terminal for an extension flash is included. The terminal can accept the FL-40which is an extension flash provided exclusively for Olympus digital cameras. Using theoptional flash bracket FL-BK01, various flash modes can be synchronised for a wide

variety of photography with a camera.

Q8: Explain: Sound recordingA: Using the built-in microphone, sound recording is possible. Simultaneous recording ispossible when shooting in movie mode. When taking still pictures, about 4 seconds ofsound can be recorded after shooting. For a still picture, sound recording can be added ormodified afterwards.

Q9: Explain: USB terminalA: Besides serial terminals, a USB terminal is included. A huge amount of image data can

be downloaded into a PC at an extremely high speed. This function is therefore veryuseful.

Q10: Explain: Exposure control systemA: Four exposure control systems are provided:

(1)Program auto exposure systemJust press the shutter button down, then the aperture and shutter speed areautomatically optimised to suit the scene to be taken.

(2)Aperture priority auto modeThe depth of field can be manually altered. When the aperture is changed, theshutter speed is automatically set so that the proper exposure is maintained.

(3)Shutter priority auto modeThe shutter speed can be altered so, for example, a fast-moving subject can becaptured with great clarity.

(4)Manual modeThe aperture and shutter speed can be manually set. Greater shooting flexibility isachieved.

Q11: Explain: Two types of light metering modesA: The C-3030ZOOM is provided with two light metering systems, the digital ESP and the

spot light metering system. In the digital ESP photometry system, the centre andperiphery of the picture frame are separately measured to select the optimal exposure. In the spot photometry system, only the centre is measured. Therefore, a darker

subject can be taken with the proper exposure without being affected by backlight, etc.

Q12: Explain: iESP auto white balanceA: Based on the average value over the entire image and on the information about the

area surrounding the subject, measurements are taken to determine the colour of thesubject itself and lighting conditions in the peripheral area. As a result, skin colours canbe reproduced with high fidelity under various conditions.

Q13: Explain: Pre-set white balanceA: Besides the auto white balance, 4 colour temperature options can be set. These are for

daylight, overcast, tungsten lamp, and fluorescent lamp light respectively. Even under

lighting conditions that pose difficulties to the auto white balance mode, the pre-setwhite balance modes offer a proper color balance.

Q14: Explain: Manual focusA: In addition to the auto focus, the manual focus can be set at any given distance

between 20 cm and infinity, in 160 steps. After the focus-setting has been confirmed onthe LCD monitor, the shot can be taken.

The distance indicated on the LCD is only as a guide.Q15: Explain: Auto bracket function

A: If the correct exposure is difficult to find due to complex lighting conditions, shots inthree or five exposure steps can be taken. The bracket step can be selected from0.3EV, 0.6EV, and 1EV. After the shutter button is released, the pre-set number offrames are taken at the different exposures.Hold the camera firmly until all exposures are complete. This mode is available in all image quality modes except TIFF mode.

Q16: Explain: ISO speed settingA: Depending on the scene, the sensitivity can be selected from among approx. 100 fixed,

approx. 200 fixed (speed increase:2X), and approx. 400 fixed (speed increase: 4X). Fora greater ISO sensitivity, the higher shutter speed and lower illumination can be applied

    to picture shooting.

Q17: Explain: TFT LCD monitor with a wide viewing angleA: In the case of the TFT LCD monitor, the screen can clearly be viewed from other

angles other than the front. This is useful for low angle or high angle shooting.

Q18: Explain: Remote control shootingA: Using the remote control device, shutter release or zoom operation can be performed

from a distance. Note the following:(1)When the remote control has not been operated for approx. 3 minutes after shooting,

    the setting is cancelled.

(2)Working distance may be reduced in brightly lit areas, such as in direct sunlight.(3)Do not subject the remote control window to bright light.(4)The Selftimer/Remote control mode will remain after a picture has been taken using

    the remote control.

Q19: Explain: Function shootingA: Picture effects are possible. Images can be captured in Black and White plus sepia

tones. When White board is selected, letters written on the white board can be clearlyread. The same is for Black board.

If the letters are not clear in White board or Black board mode, use the exposurecompensation.Off: normal colour imageBlack & white: grey scale B & W imageSepia: nostalgic brown grey scale imageWhiteboard: 2 digit B & W mode, bright part is changed to more white, dark to blackBlackboard: 2 digit B & W mode, white is changed to black and from black to white

Normal Black & white Sepia Whiteboard Blackboard

Q20: Explain: Movie recordingA: Movie recording with QuickTime Motion JPEG is possible. However, this produces morenoise than with still pictures.

When the 32 MB SmartMedia is used, movies can be recorded for the duration shown

    below.

Q:21 Is it possible to use the C-3030ZOOM LCD Monitor as a viewfinder?A: Yes. Set the mode dial at A/S/M mode, then the LCD monitor is automatically turned

ON. When the P mode is set, press ON/OFF button for the LCD monitor. If a shot istaken using the LCD monitor as a viewfinder, camera shake is easily caused. Also, notethat a battery will be severely used up.

Q22: Which type of battery can be used for the C-3030ZOOM?A: The following can be used: 2 Lithium battery packs, NiMH batteries, Lithium batteries,

NiCd batteries, or AA Alkaline batteries. When the following batteries are used, liquidleakage, heat generation, explosion will be caused. Never use them.

(1)A negative pole (minus side) is flat and a portion of the negative pole is coveredwith a seal( insulating sheet).

(2)A negative pole (minus side) is flat and is not covered with a seal (insulatingsheet).

Damage or injury caused by the use of the above mentioned batteries will not becompensated. The use of batteries such as (4), in particular, will cause a short in thebattery cell resulting in heat generation. A battery mentioned in (4) should never beused. Batteries mentioned in (1), (2), and (3) may also cause a short due to mixing offoreign matter. There is a danger of heat generation.

Q23: Is the Lithium battery pack (LB-01) rechargeable?A: It is non-rechargeable.

Q24: Why cant Carbon-Zinc Manganese batteries be used with the C-3030ZOOM?A: In addition to short life of the battery, heat generated by the battery may cause damage

    to the camera body.

Q25: When a Ni-HM battery is used, the alarm indicating weak battery appears earlierthan with a Lithium battery pack. Why?

A: Because of the different battery characteristics.

The battery can be used for a while after the alarm starts blinking.

Q26: How long can a battery last in the C-3030ZOOM?A: To estimate the life of the supplied Lithium battery, refer to the table below. Note that

battery life widely varies depending on the type of battery, manufacturer, camera useconditions, etc.Values in the table are shown only as a reference, and are not guaranteed.

    d) When connected to a PC.With Alkaline batteries, battery life widely varies depending on the date of manufacture, manufacturer, and temperature. The use of the optional NiHM battery re-charger (BU-40SNH/BU-40S/B-31S/B-30S) is recommended.

When our NiHM battery is used under the conditions specified above, estimatedbattery life, as a guide, is about a half of Lithium battery.

Q27: What is the key for longer battery life on the C-3030ZOOM?A: When the power is kept ON for about 3 minutes without any operation, the power saving

function works and displays on the control panel disappear. Furthermore, about 4 hourslater the power is automatically turned OFF. If a picture is not to be taken for a while, turnthe power OFF where possible.

When a new battery is used, the aken time before it is switched to the standbystatus becomes longer in some cases depending on the type of battery.

Q28: Why isnt the C-3030ZOOM switched to the standby status after 3 minutes?

A: Note that when the power is supplied from the AC adapter, the status is not switched tostandby, and the power is also not turned OFF.

Q29: After the LCD monitor of the C-3030ZOOM is turned ON, how many minutes does ittake before it is turned OFF?

A: After the power is turned ON, if no operation is conducted for 3 minutes, the monitor isautomatically turned OFF. In case of auto playback, the monitor is automatically turnedOFF 30 minutes later.

    Q30: What is the REC-check?

A: When REC-check is set, the picture just taken is displayed right away, and the user isasked whether the picture is to be saved to the SmartMedia card or not. Note that theREC-check can not be used in the TIFF mode.

Q31: Some items can not be selected in the shooting menu when the REC-check iseffective. Why?A: Even during checking with the REC-check, shooting can continue. However, the

following items of the shooting menu can not be modified.

    (1)Drive(2)Recording(3)Function Card(4)Card setup(5)Mode setting

Q32: When the full time AF mode is set to ON, the camera always operates in the AFmode. Why?A: When the full time AF mode is set to ON, the camera keeps the subject in focus even if

the shutter button is not activated. When the full time AF mode is set to ON, the subjectalways appears in focus displayed in the LCD monitor. Note the following:

(1)When the full time AF mode is set to ON, the battery life is shortened.(2)When the LCD monitor is off, the full time AF function does not work. Turn on the

LCD monitor to use.(3)For Card set up or Card cover alarm, the AF operation of the camera does not

    stop.

Q38: In the Macro mode of the C-3030ZOOM, what is the shortest distance to a subject?A: In the Macro mode, shooting can be performed at a shortest distance of 20 cm for all

zoom ranges, from wide to tele. Note that when a flash is used, the bright or dark areabecomes noticeable.

Camera Zoom Position Shooting Distance Macro Mode(Vertical XHorizontal)

    WIDE end 20 cm 18.1 24.6 cmC-3030ZOOM TELE end 20 cm 6.4 8.5 cm

Q39: What flash modes does the C-3030ZOOM have?A: Four types of flash modes are provided.

(1)Auto-flash mode: Flashes for darker subject or inverse lighting.(2)Red-eye reducing flash mode: Emits pre-flashes before regular flashes to reduce

red-eye.(3)Fill-in Flash mode: Forced activation.(4)OFF Flash mode: Does not flash even for a darker subject. In addition to the above four modes, an extension flash mode, a slow synchro mode(first and second curtain) can be set.

Q40: What is the slow synchro mode?A: A slow shutter speed is set to catch entire scene. The flash is fired at the start or end ofexposure. The mode is useful for shooting at night. In the first curtain effect mode, theflash is lit at the start of shooting. When moving car is captured, the light tracks are drawnin front of the car. second curtain effect mode: Flash emits at the end. When moving caris photographed, the light tracks are drawn behind the car like atail.

Q41: When the power is OFF, foreign matter, such as dust, can be seen in the finder. Why?

A: When the lens is sunk into the camera body (power OFF), foreign matter such as dustmay be seen. Because of the finder mechanism, the surface of finder lens can be seenduring power OFF. The finder is not defective. While shooting (power ON) such foreignmatter can not be seen and does not effect the images.

Q42: Can set items be saved after the power is turned OFF?A: When Set clear is set to OFF on the camera, a desired setting can be held

    14/19

    14

continuously. Even if the power is turned OFF, it can be held before the setting ischanged.

Q43: Is it possible to make the camera beep when the shutter is pressed?A: Yes, the can be set.

Q44: Is it possible to set camera so that pictures are not displayed after they are taken?A: Whether recorded pictures are displayed on the LCD after shooting can be set.

Q45: Which extension flash is recommended for the C-3030ZOOM?A: The Olympus extension flash FL-40, which has been designed exclusively for the

Olympus cameras, is recommended. Also, commercially available flashes can be used.In the case of extension flashes, check warning notices.

The exclusive extension flash FL-40(1)Photographs can be taken with just the FL-40 or together with the built-in flash.(2)When the exclusive extension flash is used, the mode should be set to TTL-

    AUTO.

(3)For connection between the camera and the exclusive extension flash, theexclusive grip and synchro cord should be used. When the FL-40 is used in otherconditions than those mentioned above, the function will be just the same ascommercially available regular extension flashes.

Commercially available extension flashes(1)Shooting with a commercially available extension flash is possible.(2)Commercially available extension flashes can be used in its AUTO/Manual mode

only.(3)The cameras flash modes have no effect on the extension flash. Only Fill-in

    Flash mode is effective.

(4)Some of the commercially available extension flashes are provided with a highvoltage type of synchro terminal. When such extension flashes are used, theymay not function properly. For the specification of the flashs synchro terminal, contact the respective manufacturer.

(5)Some of commercially available extension flashes are provided with a synchroterminal with reversed polarity. In such case, even if the terminal is connected, the flash will not fire.

(6)When selecting the extension terminal, use a product that meets the followingbasic conditions.(a)Use a clip-on type flash.(b)When an extension flash is used, exposure should be adjusted on the

extension flash unit. When an extension flash is used in the Auto mode, the F-number and ISO speed on the flash should be set to the same values asthose of the camera.

(c)Even if the auto F-number or ISO speed on the extension flash is set at thesame value as cameras, proper exposure may not be set depending on theshooting conditions. If this is the case, adjust either the Auto F-number or ISOspeed on the extension flash, or calculate the distance in the manual mode, then use the flash. However, the F-number and ISO speed can be adjustedonly in increments of 1EV, and further fine adjustment of exposure is notpossible. (Exposure compensation in the camera is made invalid in extensionflash photography.)

(d)Use a flash that can cover an illumination angle for a 35 mm focal length lensused for 35 mm film, or wider. However, in close-up photography using thelens with wide setting, illumination may not properly reach to the bottom of the

  • 8/7/2019 QA_C3030ZOOM

    15/19

    15

frame. A flash equipped with a wide adapter to spread illumination angle ofthe flash is ideal.

(e)Use a flash unit with a flash time of 1/200 sec. or shorter when using the unitat full strength. With flashes with a longer flash time, such as a ring flash, aportion of the emitted light may not contribute to the exposure.

    (f) If a flash unit with communications capability, other than the FL-40, and itsaccessories is used, the unit may not function properly and may getdamaged. Avoid the use of such flashes.

Photographic pictures taken using commercially available flashes are outof our warranty.

Q46: What percentage of the actual field is viewed through the finder of the C-3030ZOOM?A: About 80%of the actual field can be viewed through the finder. To check the image

taken by the camera, use the LCD monitor for playback. Always check details such asthe image focus, exposure etc. on a PC.

Q47: Is it possible to view images on a TV?A: Yes, it is possible. When sending images to the TV, the LCD monitor on the camera is

turned OFF. Connect the A/V cable, supplied with the camera, to the A/V outputconnector on the camera and the input connector on the TV.

Q48: How to playback movie pictures or sound.A: Movie pictures can be played back with the camera, but without sound. However, when

the camera is connected to a TV, both movie and sound can be played back. For playing back movie pictures or sound on a PC, QuickTime 4 is required.

Q49: Can night views be taken with the C-3030ZOOM?A: If Manual focus is set on infinity, night views or distant views can be taken in focus. Night

views can also be taken by using the slow synchro mode. However, here you should usea tripod.

Q50: Can a night sky be taken with the C-3030ZOOM?A: Because the shutter speed can not be set to OPEN (bulb exposure), the camera is not

suitable for taking shots of the night sky.

Q51: Can the C-3030ZOOM be used for dental photography?

A: The recommended ring flash is not supplied. Therefore, the camera may not be suitablefor dental photography.

Q52 How to take a panorama picture with the camera.A: Here a tripod is recommended. When taking panorama shots, let the edges of the

adjacent images overlap. Areas to be overlapped should be, as a guide, about 20% ofeach image.

Note: In some cases, images can not be properly pasted depending on the type ofpicture (extremely dark images, or distorted images taken at close distance). Also, if the number of images to be pasted is too many, longer processing time is

    required.

Note: In the case of the C-3030ZOOM, panorama photography covering upper, lower, left and right directions (maximum 10 frames) can be taken.
