REDESIGNING CITIES with Autonomous Vehicles Perspective by Naomi Siodmok Hello, my name is Naomi Siodmok and I am a Master of Science in Urban Design (MSUD) student at Georgia Tech. I am currently assisBng Ellen Dunham-Jones, the Director of the MSUD program in realizing a lecture, podcast, and video series called REDESIGNING CITIES: The Speedwell FoundaBon Talks at Georgia Tech. Below are some of my reflecBons. Give it a read and I hope you will consider the MSUD program here at Georgia Tech! Tuesday, December 4, 2018 kicked off the REDESIGNING CITIES series with Jeff Tumlin and Harriet Tregoning discussing the convergence of mobility, technology, and design in Redesigning CiBes with Autonomous Vehicles. I experienced a lot of emoBons during this presentaBon and conversaBon. At Bmes I was legiBmately fearful for the future, other Bmes I was nodding in complete agreement, and then someBmes I was leZ wondering, waiBng on an answer I did not receive. The Fear - I am fearful that although we have great people out there like Jeff and Harriet advocaBng and working to prepare for autonomy, there are not enough people acBng. CiBes need to step up to create policies that encourage acBve transportaBon, support shared vehicles over private ownership in an autonomous world, encourage equity, and conBnue to create engaging urban environments. The Agreement – As a user of the transportaBon system, I could not agree more with the need to change the percepBon and experience of public transportaBon. Jeff and Harriet menBoned that we cannot let public transportaBon die. CiBes need to look to other ciBes that have seen growth in ridership like Sea^le. Sea^le has made their priority to move people over vehicles. Lingering QuesBons – Jeff dropped a shocking fact in his presentaBon. He menBoned that 4.4 million American have jobs as drivers and that we must consider the labor implicaBons of autonomy, throughout the remainder of the presentaBon neither he or Harriet further addressed the topic. I was leZ wondering what will happen to those 4.4 million people once the vehicle can drive itself? Also, what will happen to the small towns and the people in them that make a livelihood mainly on drivers and truck drivers stopping to eat, sleep, and refuel? Overall, this lecture got me really thinking about the future and excited for the opportunity to graduate and apply my degree in urban design to tackle the urban challenges of the 21 st century.     2018年年12⽉月4⽇日星期⼆二, Jeff Tumlin和Harriet Tregoning 在重新设城市计之在⾃自动驾驶时代(Redesigning Cities with Autonomous Vehicles)讲座上,就移动性,技术和设计的融合等话题展开激烈烈讨论,正式拉开了了重新设计城市系列列的序幕。

    在整个讲座过程中,我经历了了很多思考和不不同的情绪。有时我对他们描述的未来会产⽣生恐惧,有时候我会感到完全认同他们的观点,有时候⼜又会觉得⾮非常的疑惑,希望进⼀一步了了解相关信息,获得更更多的解答。

    我的恐惧,主要源于尽管我们有Jeff和Harriet这样优秀的专业⼯工作者,他们主张并为⾃自动驾驶时代努⼒力力做着准备,但像他们这样的⼯工作者还远远不不够。城市需要加强制定⿎鼓励活跃交通的政策,在⾃自动驾驶时代⿎鼓励更更多共享汽⻋车和更更少的私家⻋车,⿎鼓励公平,并继续创造引⼈人⼊入胜的城市环境。

    我所赞同的,是我作为⼀一位普通的交通乘客,完全⽀支持改善公共交通的观念和体验的倡议。Jeff和Harriet强调说我们不不能让公共交通死亡。城市需要关注像⻄西雅图这样通过

    改善公共交通的使⽤用使得乘客量量增⻓长的城市经验。⻄西雅图已开始将真正⼈人通⾏行行的优先权置于交通⼯工具⾏行行驶之上。

    最后我的疑惑,是Jeff在他的演讲中抛出了了⼀一个令⼈人震惊的事实——他提到⽬目前有440万美国⼈人的⼯工作是司机,我们必须考虑⾃自动驾驶时代对就业问题的影响。在整个讲座后半部分,他或Harriet都没有再进⼀一步讨论这个话题。我想知道⼀一旦⾃自动驾驶⼴广泛推⾏行行将会对这440万美国⼈人造成什什么影响?此外,这⼜又会对那些⻓长久依赖过路路司机和卡⻋车司机停靠吃饭、休息和加油的⼩小城镇,以及其中⽣生活的⼈人们会产⽣生怎样的影响?

    总的来说,这个讲座让我真正思考未来。我也为我有机会就读城市设计项⽬目来以应对21世纪的城市挑战⽽而感到兴奋。

    본 글에서는 강의에 대한 저의 몇 가지 생각을

    소개해보고자 합니다. 이 글을 읽고 조지아텍의

    도시설계학 석사과정에도 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.

    2018 년 12 월 4 일 화요일, REDESIGINING CITIES

    시리즈의 막을 올리며 제프 텀린과 헤리엇 트레고닝이

    도시에서의 자율주행자동차가 이동성, 테크놀로지,

    도시설계에 주는 영향에 대해 토론했습니다.

    저는 이 날 발표와 토론 시간 동안 여러 상반되는 기분을

    경험했습니다. 미래에 대한 막연한 두려움도 들었고, 어쩔

    때는 이야기에 완벽히 동의하며 고개를 끄덕이다가도

    어떤 이야기에는 고개를 갸웃하며 의문을 품었습니다.

    두려움이 들었던 이유는 제프와 헤리엇처럼 자율주행이

    가져다 줄 미래를 철저히 대비하는 사람들도 있지만

    그렇지 않은 사람이 훨씬 많기 때문이었습니다. 이를 위해

    도시들은 대중교통을 장려하는 정책을 만들고, 자율주행

    공유차량을 적극 지원해야 하며, 평등하고 참여적인

    도시환경을 만들어야 할 필요가 있습니다.

    헤리엇과 제프가 후원자를 포함한 방문객들과 강의 후

    이야기를 나누는 모습이다.

    동의했던 부분은 대중교통에 대한 사회적인 인식과

    경험이 바뀌어야 한다는 내용이었습니다. 이 부분에

    대중교통 사용자로서 깊이 공감했습니다. 제프와

    헤리엇은 대중교통이 사라져가는 것을 지켜만 볼 수

    없다고 말했습니다. 도시들은 시애틀과 같이 대중교통

    이용자들이 늘어난 도시 사례들을 참고해야 합니다.

    시애틀은 대중교통 이용자를 자가용 수보다 더 많이

    만들기 위해 노력해 왔습니다.

    몇 가지 난제들도 있었습니다. 제프는 강의에서 충격적인

    사실을 알려주었는데, 미국인 중 무려 440 만명이

    운전업에 종사하고 있으며 자율주행에 의해 직업을

    위협받고 있다는 것이었습니다. 제프나 헤리엇은 그 후 그

    주제에 대해 더 언급하지 않았지만, 저는 큰 의문이

    남았습니다. 자동차가 스스로 움직일 수 있는 날이 오면,

    운전사로 일하고 있는 440 만 명은 어떻게 될 것이며,

    그런 운전사들에게 숙식과 연료를 제공하며 생계를

    유지했던 작은 마을들의 운명은 어떻게 되는 것일까요?

    전반적으로 본 강의는 저에게 미래에 대한 기대감과

    도시설계를 통해 졸업 후 21세기 여러 문제를 해결하고

    싶은 열망을 가져다 주었습니다.
