Principal’s Message Thank you to all the students, staff and parents who have contributed to making 2015-2016 another successful year at Richmond Secondary School. The spirit, enthusiasm and academic and extracurricular accomplishments of our students were outstanding and the commitment of our many scholars, athletes, actors, artists, musicians and volunteer clubs and student leadership groups has been tremendous. The professionalism and dedication of our staff is always impressive and often inspiring. The volunteers on our Alumni Association, Dry After Grad and PAC played an invaluable part in helping to build a greater sense of community at our school. I especially want to acknowledge and thank our 2016 graduates for the positive leadership they provided during their final year at RSS. Members of the 88th graduating class in our school’s history have carried the torch with pride. As witnessed by the remarkable number of scholarships presented at our classy Valedictory Ceremony and the many members of the class accepted to a wide variety of universities and colleges, they will continue to succeed in the future. Lastly, it has been an absolute privilege to serve the Richmond Secondary community in my first year at the school. I am grateful for the tremendous people I have met and I am proud to be a part of the Richmond High family. My hope is that every RSS student has felt that they belong and they could achieve and learn. I wish every member of our extended school community a safe and enjoyable summer, and for our graduates and retiring staff members, all the very best in the exciting road ahead. Thank you, Mr. A

The 1st Annual Colt Carnival – A Tremendous Community-Building Event! Congratulations to Student Council and student-leaders from several of our clubs for organizing a tremendous year-end celebration on June 20 called ‘The Colt Carnival’. Hundreds of RSS students and staff shared laughs, signed yearbooks, listened to live music, played carnival games, got temporary tattoos, participated in a watermelon eating contest, tried the inflatable bungee-run, watched various teachers, students and our principal get soaked in the dunk tank and enjoyed hotdogs, cotton candy, popcorn and prizes. Student Council hopes to grow this event into an annual RHS tradition and the first ‘Colt Carnival’ was a wonderful celebration for our entire school community! Thank you to the Student Council executive and their sponsors Ms. Chan and Mr. Chow – it was a fabulous ending to a great year at RHS!

2016 Valedictory Ceremony at UBC Our 88th Valedictory Ceremony on Wednesday June 8 was a classy and memorable event for our graduates of 2016. Over 1,000 grads, staff, special guests, alumni, parents, family and friends helped celebrate our graduating students in the beautiful Chan Centre for Performing Arts at UBC. The speeches were hopeful, the Alumni presentation to Ms. Kay Sakata (RSS grad of 1934) was uplifting, the class Historian Brian Fabula and Valedictorian Daphne Hong represented their classmates with great style, humour and passion, the grad choral group performed brilliantly and, most importantly, we celebrated each of our graduating students with dignity, respect and honour as they walked across the stage. There was a large and impressive turnout of staff and the grads and their families were very appreciative, both of the beautiful ceremony and the genuine support and care demonstrated by so many. Based on the incredible number of awards, scholarships and post-secondary entrance awards granted to our grads, they are sure to continue to do very well in the road ahead. It was a great night of celebration for our entire school community. The grads will enjoy their formal Dinner & Dance and Dry After Grad celebrations on June 29/30. We wish all the best to our 2016 grads!

One Act Festival A Hit! Our Mainstage Theatre hosted a very successful One-Act Festival in the RSS Theatre from May 24-26. This year's festival was a tribute to retiring teacher Ms. Barb Barker, and featured a variety of scenes from her 30-year career as a drama teacher in Richmond. Audience members enjoyed scenes of comedy, drama, satire, melodrama and more, brought to life by our very talented cast and crew. Bravo to all and we sincerely wish Ms. Barker all the best in her retirement. Students interested in acting, performing or working backstage in a technical or support role are encouraged to seek out Ms. An as our theatre program continues to prosper and grow and everyone is always welcome!

RSS NEWSLETTER VOLUME 88, Issue 11 JUNE 2016 RSS Student Achievement Celebrated
On the mornings of June 13 and June 14 we held four grade assemblies to recognize and celebrate all of our Grades 8 to 11 students who achieved distinction this school year in academics, athletics, arts and service to the school. A huge congratulations to the subject award recipients, the Colts athletes of the year in each grade and both Service (30-hours) and impressive Major Service Award (90+ hour) recognition winners. Parents were welcome to attend the assemblies where students were recognized in front of their grade peers and the support was warm, enthusiastic and heartfelt – well done Colts! Please note - Honour Roll certificates will be included in the June report card available in Homeroom at 10am on June 29.
Grade 8 Mini-Camp and Sleep-Over! On September 23-24 we will welcome all of our youngest students to Richmond Secondary School at a Grade 8 Mini-Camp and Sleep Over. Thirty Grade 11 and 12 volunteers and student leaders have been selected to plan, facilitate, lead and engage our newest Colts in a variety of team building events and activities. We are aware that the transition from Grade 7 to high school comes with excitement, a little anxiety and a lot of questions – for students and for parents. Working with staff, our senior students will welcome our newest students and organize several fun ‘getting to know you’ activities as well as lead sessions with practical tips and information on ‘how to succeed in high school’. Held on the first pro-d day in September, the students will be at the school for the full day and overnight, under the direct supervision of staff, and the purpose is to welcome our newest students and help them build positive connections and form new friendships as the RSS Grad Class of 2021. Grade 7 parents and families will receive more information in the mail – but are asked to keep September 23/24 free on their child’s calendar for this exciting event. Welcome Colts!!
The Memory Tree Mural The Richmond Kinsmen Adult Day Centre contacted Richmond Secondary to have a mural commissioned for their dining room. RSS art students Patricia Ferrera, Andy Lin, Charlene Mui and Suzanna Wu took on the large mural project. The image is a tree with bare branches so that the patients at the Kinsmen ADC can decorate the tree every month to help them remember the time of year and the four seasons. The mural took many hours to paint, but the students happily volunteered their time to create this meaningful project for our community. The beautiful finished mural clearly shows it came from the students’ hearts!

RSS NEWSLETTER VOLUME 88, Issue 7 FEBRUARY 2016 RSS NEWSLETTER VOLUME 88, Issue 11 JUNE 2016 RSS Leadership Students Give Generously The 30 students in our PE 10 Leadership class had a successful year in supporting a variety of causes. The year began with the class raising $1447 for The Terry Fox Foundation and coordinating our annual school-wide Terry Fox Run. The students then embarked on a community initiative by raising funds for Thunderbird Elementary School, an “in-need school” in Vancouver that is home to the largest social housing project in B.C. Leadership students acted as big buddies to the Grade Ones and Twos at Thunderbird throughout the year, carving pumpkins and creating Christmas crafts to sell as a fundraiser. Through selling gift cards and Purdy’s Chocolates, enough funds were raised to take all their little buddies on a field trip to the UBC Botanical Gardens. Additional funds and a van load of canned goods collected during our food drive helped fill winter hampers for the families in need in the Thunderbird community. The Leadership group then shifted their focus to a local cause in our own school district for Feed-U-Cate 38, a district program that helps provide funding to schools that run breakfast/lunch programs for students. Using fundraising and leadership strategies acquired throughout the year, the students embarked on their fundraising task in groups with little direction from their teacher. Collectively, they managed to raise $2234 for the food program and presented a cheque to Assistant Superintendent Ms. Wendy Lim on June 13. Congratulations Colts for your incredible leadership, energy, organizational skills, empathy for others, and for supporting for those in need. Thank you also to our teacher Ms. Kippan for all her hard work and inspiration!
RHS 2016 Yearbook Our school has been producing yearbooks since 1940 and on June 20 our students received the latest RHS edition. The yearbook is a wonderful 208-page collection of photographs, stories and images of the 2015-2016 school year. Each student is included in the book, as are photographs and individual write-ups for our graduating students. Similarly, all of the Colts teams, clubs, events, happenings and staff are in the annual – a great keepsake for students and staff to cherish now and in the years ahead. A huge thank you to Mr. Zadorozny and the members of our dedicated Yearbook classes. Special recognition goes to Julia Pascual, Ysabella Tabuena, Jorielle Krawchuk, Jade Robinson and Jen Wang for their leadership, initiative and creative excellence this year. Bravo and thank you!
Curriculum & Graduation Changes? The Ministry of Education has been working on significant curriculum, provincial exam and graduation requirements changes for all secondary students in B.C. These changes will be in place for Grades 8 and 9 students in September 2016 and for Grades 10-‐12 students in September 2017. Parents are encouraged to read and explore more online at https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca
August Mail-Out? Check the RSS Website! With the labour uncertainty at Canada Post, a possible strike or lockout could cause the August mail out from the school to be delayed. Parents are urged to check the Richmond Secondary School website beginning in the middle of August for updates on school start-‐up on Tuesday, September 6 as well as the 2016-‐2017 calendar. http://rhs.sd38.bc.ca

Colts Athletics Congratulations to the hundreds of RSS students who wore the maroon and grey and represented our school with skill, determination, competitiveness, sportsmanship and class this past year. A sincere thank you to our staff and outside coaches and sponsors for making the 2015-2016 Colts athletics seasons so successful – we appreciate the time you put in and all you do to coach, lead and mentor our young student-athletes. From the spring season, we congratulate track athlete An Yu for winning the district and V&D 1500m and placing 9th in B.C., our Junior Ultimate team for winning the RSSAA title and placing 11th at the Provincial championships, the Tennis team for winning the RSSAA title and placing 10th at the B.C. tournament and our Senior Ultimate team for placing 2nd in Richmond and 5th in the Tier I Provincial championship tournament, a year after

Congratulations also to our Colts athletes of the year – Jenise Lo, Dana Sander, Sandra Balitaan, Emerson Cooke, Chelsea Ramos, Ryan Liu, Natalie Cooke, Liam Brusse and Philip Gundic and our graduating students recognized for athletic excellence Nikol Grishin, Christine Fan, Jeremy Bariso and Sinthujan Kalainathan. Recognition for exemplary service to athletics went to Rachel Gurdas, Allyson Lara, Daphne Hong and Cecilia Tsang. All students are encouraged to try-out, get involved or support Colts athletics next year – see the sign-up sheets by Mr. Winograd’s office and listen to the daily announcements. Dragon Boating and Many Other RHS Clubs!! Each year at RSS we offer over 30 extracurricular clubs and activities for our students to join, volunteer, lead and belong. We urge and encourage all students to get involved in at least one positive group, team, club or activity at our school – this is a great way to make friends, learn and grow your volunteer and leadership skills and build your resume. Dragon boating is one example of an active club at our school and the RHS Flying Colts team practiced weekly for months and competed in the high school division of the Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival on June 18-19 in False Creek. The team is sponsored by Ms. Yasui and included 25+ students and this year they won the bronze medal in their division! Dragon boating is a great physical work out and tremendous team-building activity for students; however, we offer a full range of clubs and opportunities. Some other examples include a Garden club, Games club, Business club, Green Team, School Newspaper, 30-Hour Famine, Cheerleading, Japan club, Colts That Care, Florida Science Edventure, Grad Committee, First Responders, Library Monitors, Chinese Chess club, Student Council and more – we encourage all students to get involved next year – attend our Clubs Day at lunch on Friday, September 30 to promote your club or to find out more about clubs offered.
All the very best to our 2016 grads! We wish everyone a safe and happy summer and look
forward to seeing all our returning students on Tuesday, September 6.
