Alles deesdae is so modern en glansryk.

Dit lyk nie so nie. Nou wonder ek, hoeveel bes-bewaarde geheimresepte is nog daar buite?

Time to do good

WINNING LETTER: LANQUEDOC SOUP KITCHEN

We would like to thank Reverend Leon Klate and his Congregation in Pniël as well as our Anglican Church who responded to our plight in last month’s Riviernuus. Because of Pniël Church’s generous contribution to the soup kitchen we will have more than the usual 5 pots of soup available to the community on a Wednesday afternoon. We believe no one will be turned away without having anything to eat.

A BIG thank you to the congregation of Pniël who opened their hearts to the children of Lanquedoc. We would also like to thank the brave women of the Anglican Church’s Mothers Union who run the soup kitchen every Wednesday.

To all Dwars River Valley residents who still want to contribute, we will greatly appreciate any contribution.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

GEHEIME RESEPTE

Sixty Seven Minutes. That is all that is required of our time on Wednesday, 18 July, to do good. It is Mr Nelson Mandela’s 94’th birthday and his wish is for all South Africans to perform a noble gesture by helping a disadvantaged citizen.

There are a number of charity organizations that will greatly appreciate our assistance. Among them are Lanquedoc and Kylemore’s soup kitchens on Wednesdays. That’s where Riviernuus’ staff will be.

It was through his effort (and others like him) that we can attribute the existence of this newspaper. We are a bit early, but on behalf of all Riviernuus readers: Happy Birthday, Mr Mandela! We greatly appreciate the many sacrifices you made for all of us throughout your 94 years.

Mooi bly,

In the last three months the Dwars River Valley has been blessed with three sets of twins.

To the proud parents: Enjoy your two blessings and good luck with the double trouble!

They say there are two things in life for which you are never truly prepared: twins.

haPPy Birthday tata, WE LOVE YOU.

Ramadan mubaRak

The Executive Mayor Conrad Sidego, the Municipal Manager (Acting) David Beretti and the staff of Stellenbosch Municipality wish all the Muslim families well over the month of Ramadan.

When Nelson Mandela walked free from Victor Verster Prison on that historic Sunday, 11 February 1990, the only thought on his mind was his contribution towards making our country the great nation that we can be.

The reception of the released Nelson Mandela at the gates of the prison was overwhelming. On their way from Victor Verster Prison to the Grand Parade in Cape Town, where Madiba was scheduled to make his first public appearance in many years that day, the convoy of cars with Madiba and Winnie Mandela in a chaufer-driven silver Toyota Cressida (nogal), drove down the Wemmershoek Road, and onto the R45 from Franschhoek, over the Dwars River bridge near Solms-Delta, past Groot Drakenstein, and onto the Klapmuts off-ramp.

Many people of the Dwars River Valley were lining that stretch of road that day to catch a glimpse of this world icon who most people around the world want to be associated with.

Ironically, or by design, this route that Madiba’s freedom convoy were travelling on is part of the Dwars River Valley Escape Route. So we can proudly claim that we supported Madiba in his “escape” from prison.

As we enter the month of July, Nelson Mandela’s birth month and the month that brings us Mandela Day, each South African is called to volunteer our time, skills and

resources in service of others, to celebrate the birthday of Madiba in a manner that honours his legacy.

South Africans, and people all around the world, from all backgrounds, are getting ready to follow in the footsteps of our country's and the world’s most celebrated leader by dedicating at least 67 minutes of our day in serving the needs of people in need as part of the Nelson Mandela International Day celebrations on 18 July.

Mandela Day, which is commemorated annually on his birthday, was formally adopted by the United Nations in November 2009 and was first celebrated on 18 July 2010. The day serves to inspire ordinary citizens like us, that the well-being of our communities and our country is everybody’s responsibility.

As we prepare to make our contribution in honour of the decades that Nelson Mandela

and his comrades spent in sacrifice so that we can live in a better world, we are reminded of his words in handing over the baton to us: “it is in your hands to make a difference”. To promote selflessness, compassion, generosity and love we are all asked to dedicate some time to invest in our communities.

In celebrating the 94th birthday of Madiba we are also encouraged to remember and celebrate the values and the character of this inspirational leader. Values of humility, servant leadership, compassion, forgiveness, reconciliation and nation building. It is these values that we are actually called upon to embrace as we make the contribution that will change our country’s character, in honour and celebration of Madiba’s legacy.

The opportunity presented to us by participating in Mandela Day will help us to share in the great man’s legacy of compassion, contribution, forgiveness and nation building.

On his Long Walk to Freedom, Madiba has shared many of the conversations that he had with himself, but the ones that we can most appropriately share on this occasion are his conversations about Forgiveness and Freedom:

FORGIVENESS“As I walked out the door toward

the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my

bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.”

FREEDOM“For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way

that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

Happy Birthday Tata. We Love you. Siyabonga.

Tamlyn Jacobs, ‘n Graad 4 leerder by Pniël Primêr, was onlangs aangewys as een van drie wenners in Cape Wool se Merino kompetisie vir laerskole.

Welgedaan Tamlyn!

gesture of appreciation to the Lanquedoc community. “It is Agrimark’s goal to support communities who support our business,” Brinkhuis said.

On behalf of the Lanquedoc community, Father Jerry Francis thanked Agrimark and Sentino Projects for their contribution. "The hall will be officially opened on 14 July and made available for use by the entire Lanquedoc community," Father Francis said.

“Die Here se genade het my deurgedra,” sê Aunty Sophy.

Veels geluk Aunty Sophy!

Probleme soos behuising sal automaties in plek val indien daar beter samewerking is.”

Drug BustNot less than 20 persons had to face the full might of the law during June 2012 when they were caught on different occasions in the possession of various drugs by members of Groot-Drakenstein Police.

Among them were at least three suspected drug dealers where big quantities of Mandrax, Tik and Dagga were confiscated. The total street value of the drugs confiscated amounts to almost R30 000-00.

On Tuesday 12 June 2012 a suspected drug dealer was arrested on a farm in Simondium after a member of the public gave information of the drug dealing at his residence. His house was searched and a quantity of Dagga, Tik and Mandrax was confiscated.

A police member posed as a drug user on Thursday 14 June 2012 and bought

Tik at a dealer in Lanquedoc. The police then entered his house and found almost R10 000-00 worth of Tik and Mandrax in his house. The suspect tried to flee but was caught immediately by the vigilant police members.

On Friday 15 June 2012 members on patrol came across a suspected drug dealer in Lanquedoc on his way home. He appeared to be suspicious and was searched on the spot. Tik with a street value of R 11 000-00 was found in his possession. It was later found that he was on his way home from his supplier in Cape Town.

Other arrests were made in Lanquedoc, Pniël, Kylemore and Simondium. Most of these arrests can be linked to a good and sound relationship between the community and the police. The police once again appeals to the community to blow the whistle on crime. Let us continue to take hands and be brave partners in the fight against crime. Tel: 021 874 8000

The Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch Municipality, Alder-man Conrad Sidego, is proud to announce the innovative “Stellenbosch Valley of Character” Project.

The project aims to not only enhance the core values of Stellenbosch Municipality but also those of the community. Stellenbosch is a community of possibilities where one can embody and live this vision of a town that is value-driven.

This campaign follows hot on the heels of Sidego’s “Stop at the Stop Street” campaign which he launched in October 2011. “I drive through Cloetesville on my way to the office and noticed that motorist did not stop at the stop streets. I was also horrified that some mothers with children in their cars would not stop at the stop street. We continue to complain about crime and lawlessness but are in fact contributing to the greater sense of lawlessness.

“To combat this attitude of simply ignoring regulations and the mindset some people may have of 'doing my own thing' we need to look at our values and ethics. Do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do and not because

a traffic officer will pull you over and give you a fine. Doing the right thing when no one is looking is what we need.”

The Valley of Character campaign kicked off with an introductory session for senior municipal officials on 6 June 2012. Officials will receive inspirational messages on a weekly basis which will help motivate them to live with greater consciousness of  moral character, and to be examples to the rest of the community. This approach wants to inspire change from the inside out.

More training sessions are planned when Council returns from recess in July 2012. Please contact the mayor on 021 808 8740 or [email protected] should you wish to implement similar programmes in your organisations or communities.

UINSAKE- J a c k y G O L I AT H Besturende Direkteur, De Fynne Kwekery

Skadu of Vol son; Klei- of Sanderige grond; Klein of groot plant soorte; Meer jarige of een jarige plante; Reg-op of verspreiende groei wyse. U plant keuses sal bepaal hoe u finale tuin sal lyk.

This month’s network session was held at Molenvliet Guest and Wine Estate.

This family owned estate is surely a gem in the Dwars River Valley and their claim that this is “where Heaven and Earth meet”, is definitely not far off. They concentrate mainly on functions such as weddings and parties.

Thank you Molenviet for your warm welcome and opening your doors to these great initiatives.

We also had the privilege to see the demonstration of a flower decoration presented by Elmarie Bredell from El Lefleur. This was an absolute wonderful experience to see.

She showed us how to use ordinary plants you find in nature and turn it into beautiful arrangements. Elmarie also talked about styling and re-energizing an establishment. Local businesses and entrepreneurs that attended our network session thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Our message with this month’s session:“As the Dwars River Valley SMME’s, let us all take hands and work together to achieve more.”

GEVAAR:Skerp Puntemet

- nadine L A N S

Hoe lank nog voordat ‘n mens of ‘n kind raakgery of selfs deur ‘n rondloperhond gebyt word?

community conVersations

The June 2012 issue of Riviernuus was a revelation. The new free classified section was a community conversation in itself.

Like opening the treasure chest of the Dwars River Valley Community, with people sharing the many gifts, talents and services that our community has to offer, the people of the Valley defining themselves. I firmly believe that the most empowering exercise in any situation is the ability to define myself, ourselves. If I don’t define myself, somebody will do it for me. If I don’t know who I am, somebody will tell me who I am. If I don’t know where I’m going, any road will take me there.

On a personal level, and as a community made up of various organizations and neighbourhoods, we have a duty and a responsibility to define ourselves. We speak about the need for positive community conversations in our Valley so that we, ourselves, and not another, determine who we are, what we stand for, what our hopes are, how we do things, who we relate to and how. We choose to define ourselves because at some point we have to grow tired of being told who we are, where we come from, where we ought to go and how we should proceed on our journey.

Another article that caught the attention was the call for support by our neighbours in Lanquedoc for blankets, warm clothes and soup ingredients to help people who have fallen on hard times.

This call has generated a warm response around the Dwars River Valley Community, a conversation of compassion, contribution

and generosity. Quite a number of individuals and organizations are en-couraging their members to become the contribution that will make a difference in the lives of our neighbours.

And in the process, while making these contributions that help restore the dignity of our neighbour, we are defining ourself as a caring, compassionate community, a community that is built by focusing on people’s gifts rather than what we don’t have. Our conversation must always be about what we can do, not what we can’t do.

To make a difference in our community, we must begin by naming the existing context and grow into a new way of thinking that leads to new conversations that produce a new context.

Our current context is a long way from one of gifts, generosity and accountability. The dominant context we now hold is one of deficiencies, interests, and entitlement. Out of this context grows the belief that the suffering of communities is a set of problems to be solved.

The interest we have in problems is so intense that at some point we take our identity from those problems.

Simply put, the conversation that we choose to have with ourself, must declare that if we want to make our communities stronger, we should study our assets, resources and talents.

It is in the attention to these things that we can create something new. Possibilty. In the face of difficulty we can despair, get angry, or choose possibilty.

Join the conversation. Kom praat saam. Masikhulume. Contributions can be sent to [email protected]

’n Feestelike atmosfeer het by uitstek geheers.

Ja, ’n uithaler sukses was die dans by uitnemendheid.

Feesdansgangers was uitgedos in skerp en deur-die-ring-getrekte formele drag.

Welgedaan manne!Luke Cyster in aksie
