Dear Lord,
We pray for our Christian brothers and sisters in
Syria and Iraq, not only caught in the middle of the
cross fire but driven away as well because of their
faith and belief. Keep them safe Lord and that the
neighboring countries to where they have fled grant
them shelter and a new home.
Amen

Fellow Pasig Rotarians:
First of all, let me congratulate RJ Ermita’s NU Bulldogs for winning
this year’s UAAP Senior Basketball Tournament. They came from No.
4, wiped out Ateneo which was the No. 1 team, and then swept FEU for
their first championship in 60 years! Galing!
It has been three months since we started this journey. Now that we are
in the middle of our fourth month, we need to bring in possible
prospects. If we follow the suggestion of Rotary International, that
“Each One Bring One”, we can immediately double our membership.
Certainly, each of us know at least one friend that we can share Rotary
with. So invite them for lunch on Thursdays, so they can Light Up
Rotary!
Reminder to the TRF Chairman, November 29 will be the TRF Banquet
at the Hotel Sofitel. Please look into the possible moving up to Major
Donor status of the Multiple Paul Harris Fellows. I also know of several
Rotarians who can become Paul Harris Fellows by availing of the Raffy
Garcia Challenge which districts all over the Philippines are taking
advantage of. For $500, you can become a Paul Harris Fellow by the
assignment of 500 recognition points from PDG Raffy Garcia’s gifts to
the Rotary Foundation. Let's become a 100% Paul Harris Club!
Last week I talked about the Rotary Day Event on November 15, 2014.
The entire District will have a medical mission and job fair simultaneous
with other zones. RC Pasig and RC Mutya ng Pasig will lead the zone in
this project. We have the lead in the Medical Mission and Mutya ng
Pasig has the lead in the Job Fair.
Secretary John Peter and myself met with some of the Best Class
Presidents of Zone 6 to discuss assignments and to determine what we
exactly want to do during the medical mission; what kind of service will
we offer to the potential patients. It was agreed that Pasig West and

Pasig Sunrise will handle the Dental area. Our dentists like Dir. Nick
Guzman and Louie Orosa can help out in that area.
Dr. Aga has a source of cheap medicines and will come up with the list
of medicines that we will need. But for now we can initially budget
P15,000 for these medicines. We will be collecting P500 from each of
you to fund these medicines.
Since we will have volunteer doctors and nurses, we will have to prepare
food for them. We can do it in many ways, but I think it will be easier
and cheaper if we get a caterer that will serve two meriendas and a
lunch. We will ask another P500 from each member to be used for the
food expense.
It was also suggested by President Cathy that we buy sacks of rice from
NFA. The reason for this is that everyday people line up for hours to buy
rice from the NFA store. They are only allowed to buy three kilos at a
time. So, the people who have been treated can buy up to 3 kilos of NFA
rice at NFA cost.
The botas are being picked up from the printer and we can distribute
them soon. This will be our first major project this year. When we
distribute these botas, we can have some fun and games with the
children of GK and serve them Mcdonalds or Jolibbee.
PE Ner is the head of the Rotary Day committee. He should have formed
a committee by now and will start coordinating with PE Oddette of
Mutya ng Pasig.
We will be doing something to improve attendance starting with next
week’s meeting. Hopefully, everybody supports the moves so that we
can improve our attendance.

When we set the number games professor to speak to us twice in a
couple of months, he had different pictures to show and make the front
of the Tinig worthwhile for him to keep. But Dra. Sugar Armas spoke to
us several weeks apart and with no attempt to make her Tinig Portrayal
worthwhile, she had the same picture placed. I am sure it was not her
fault. Much more the father’s. The way she was dishing out her talk in
simplistic, easily understood style, you will never believe daughter ni
Ray.
There were only six attendees in the rushed fellowship last Thursday and
to make it seven, Ray was there. Despite weeks in advance for the grand
party of PP Peping, only a dozen attended from the club. PP Ed L. was
more at home as he brought ever devoted Ching and lovely daughter to
the great delight of Peping.
The one in charge of our memorial lunch that would be the second time
in two years is energetic PP Peter. He summoned PP Peping and yours
truly to make the preparation. If we hit 60%, that would be pretty good
as I have about 59 in my recollection system who are preparing for our
eventual joining them. I can recall: Johnny Alban, Doy Aldanese, Mike
Ampil, Jess Arnaldo, I.G. Atendido, Obet Barreto, Bing Basilio, Rene
Berroya, Cering Bustamante, Doding Carlos, Piling Castillo, Del Catli,
Bob Chandran, Charlie Cheng, Milton Chiung, Alon Chung, Lino

Vicente, Kenneth Dy, & Teddy Yabut. Denny Samson pala also. I might
have missed one or two but better instead of including buhay pa pala.
This will be on our 30th October meeting. The October celebrants,
including spouses, would host the extras as this Thursday PP Lito would
be the lone host. Even if madoble or matriple, please invite the spouses
of our dead Rotarians. The spouses naman of Rotarians who have gone
ahead would also be honored. Or, siblings as the case of our PS Joji who
recently lost a brother and a sister. As well as those who lost a son or
daughter as PP Peping and PPA Bella, and, the late Manny Estacio who
lost a daughter in Silliman campus.
There are a handful whose spouses and their Rotarians were together,
namely: Tito & Pacita de Guzman, Tony & Belen Guevara, Tacio &
Pacing delos Reyes, Julito & Dolly Francia, Carding & Fely Francisco,
Poch & his first two spouses Ramirez, Tony & Tess Limgenco, Joe &
Emma Jota, Remy & Conching Maranan, and, Danny & Spouse Floro.
There might be two more pairs who did not let us know one way or the
other that they went ahead.
To those who went ahead, perhaps a recollection of what they were best
known for would be great. Like PP Teddy Yabut when PP Rhett looked
worried about his condition, Teddy told him “what’s wrong with you, is
this the first time you will see a man dying?”.
A reminder of those who should order candles, rubber boots, and,
sponsoring a scholar. My apologies to Rtn. Henry, I honestly thought he
had one of our scholars with him, that was his spouse pala. When PP &
AG Hermie Orbe greeted her, I honestly thought Rizal High scholar.
Cradle snatcher? No, she sped up Henry’s recovery from that very bad
accident. He proved the tree was stronger than his car then.

The White House honors Rotary women for their humanitarian
service
Senior Rotary leaders gathered Tuesday at the White House to honor 10
women for their service projects, an event attended by members of U.S.
President Barack Obama's senior staff.
The Rotary members presented their projects, in the hopes of creating
new inroads for government partnerships and support.
"This is recognition of the great work that they do but also serves as a
great vehicle to inspire others to do similar kinds of things," said Rotary
General Secretary John Hewko. "One of the things we're doing a better
job of is sharing our story to the non-Rotary world."
The honorees were selected by Rotary senior leaders and endorsed by
the White House from clubs around the U.S. but their projects touch
lives across the globe.
Carolyn Jones, of Anchorage, Alaska, has served numerous times as a
Rotary volunteer in Russia, three of them as a preschool teacher for
developmentally delayed children in orphanages. During her
presentation she lamented hearing about a child sold for a bottle of
vodka, and vowed to use her honor as a stepping stone to save more
lives.
Jacqueline Parsons, a licensed professional counselor from San Antonio,
Texas, works on projects in her community and abroad, including the
FLAG (Fitness, Literacy, Attendance, and Grades) program, which
provides incentives to students to go to school, including bikes, sports
equipment, and other items.
Ginger Vann from Baker, Louisiana, coordinates tutoring for at-risk
students. With the help of her club, she renovated an uninhabitable

school building, and worked with tutors to reach 50 students each day.
She's also passionate about workforce development in Baker, where
well-paying craftsman jobs often go unfilled.
"We just don't have enough craft workers, people who are certified to do
the jobs," she said.
Michelle Candland, from San Diego, California, works with Monarch
High, an alternative school designed for homeless children.
"Right now there are over 1.3 million homeless kids on the street in
America. That's more than there are Rotarians around the world," said
Candland. "Twenty thousand of those kids are in San Diego alone."
"How can a child focus on school if their tummies are growling, their
shoes don't fit, and they don't even know where they are going to be
sleeping the next day?" she asked. "It takes an entire community to work
together to solve this problem."
The other honorees Tuesday were Bernadette Blackstock, Marion
Bunch, Carol Butler, Elizabeth Usovicz, Deepa Willingham, and Jane
Winning.
Winning, a registered nurse from Chowchilla, California, has provided
immunizations and health exams to more than 2,500 people in need
across Mexico, Honduras, Ecuador, and Guatemala. She's also worked
with Rotaplast International to provide free cleft lip and palate
reconstructive surgery to those who cannot afford it.
"A gentleman was 65 years old and he said, 'I can kiss my wife for the
first time,'" Winning said of the man post-surgery. "Those are incredible
experiences you don't get to share every day."
Butler, also from Anchorage, highlighted two projects. The first is a
statewide suicide prevention plan. According to Butler, Alaska has the

highest rate of suicide per capita in the nation. The public awareness
plan educates Rotary members and Alaska residents to recognize the
warning signs of someone in crisis. She also talked about her club's
partnership with the Alaska Mission of Mercy, a collective of dentists,
staff, and other volunteers who provide free dental services throughout
the state.
"Dental care is a gateway to good health," says Butler. "There's an
increasing problem nationwide with people seeking dental care in
emergency rooms."
Usovicz, of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, has worked on service projects in
Missouri as well as abroad. In Malawi, she helped to reduce the rate of
malaria deaths by 65 percent to 70 percent in less than a year by
supplying the community with mosquito bed nets.
Willingham, of Solvang, California, is the founder and chair of Promise
of Assurance to Children Everywhere (PACE), an organization that
educates girls and their mothers, and works to prevent child trafficking
and early marriage in India.
Bunch, of Atlanta, Georgia, is the CEO of Rotarians for Family Health
and AIDS Prevention. She has received numerous awards on behalf of
her work for AIDS, and considers herself a mom who represents the face
of AIDS because she started her work after losing her son to the disease
in 1994.
"Because of that one single tragedy, my life's journey changed
dramatically from a very engaged business woman to a warrior on AIDS
and advocate of human rights," Bunch said.
As a result of her leadership, in April some 343,660 people received
health care, medical checkups, and counseling from 8,150 Rotary

volunteers during Rotary Family Health Days across Ghana, Nigeria,
Uganda, and South Africa.
Like Bunch, Blackstock, of Franklinville, New Jersey, has turned her
love of service into a career, launching the People for People
Foundation, which assists families struggling with financial hardships.
To date, the foundation has helped some 10,000 families afford food,
clothing, rent, utilities, medications, and other life necessities.
"Our combined mission today is not only to provide small grants but to
serve as advocates for our families and provide life-skill training and
mentoring and case management where needed."
The event in D.C. was also an opportunity for the honorees to share
ideas with each other.
"There are some resources still available to expand and improve projects
even amongst the women here," Jones said.
"Listening to the ladies, I was in awe," said Vann. "I was thinking what
if all 10 of us got together on one project. That would be amazing. We're
talking and it's exciting to be a part of that conversation."

GREATNESS OF ORDINARY LIFE
By: Rtn. Kel Pascual
Allow me to interrupt my travel notes and write some
insights about the article in the Inquirer of October
9th, "Time to Legalize Same Sex Union" wherein former UP law
dean Pacifico Agabin, also chair of the Philippine Judicial Academy's
Constitutional Law Dept is advocating that's it's about time that the
Philippines legalize same-sex unions. Though the subject matter is
just a personal opinion of the professor, still I feel the matter as very
crucial.
The article stated that the current Family Code of our Civil Code does
not allow such unions. Even setting aside this legal prohibition, as
well as Church precepts, same-sex union presents a critical
consideration as far as children are concerned. When legalized, there
is now an air of general acceptability that such union is now a
"family" which shall pave the way to a strong tendency for such
unions to adopt children- that is where the complication arises.
Let's take the different scenarios. A lesbian "family" adopts a female
child. The girl grows up in an environment where the majority of
other children have natural fathers and natural mothers. There would
be an "odd" feeling in her mind. Always in her thoughts would be
"who is my father, how come my classmates, my neighbors have dads
and I don't have one?" By the order of nature, there is always a
natural longing in children to look up to both a mother and a father as
they are growing up. Again by the order of nature this is also apparent
with the rest of all the animal species.
In a natural family, again by the order of nature, a child looks up to a
mother as the model of affectionate love and motherly care, as a
model of how a household is managed as far as food, clothing,
physical caring, orderliness of the home, even education, etc are
concerned. On the other hand, again by the order of nature, a child
looks up to a father for fortitude, courage, security, physical strength,

discipline, as a model of work or profession, leadership of the family,
as a source of financial security, etc. Going back to our scenario, the
adopted girl would be deprived of her natural longing for a father
image and model because her parents are both "moms."
There would be two tendencies for this girl when she comes of age, to
fall for an older man, relative to her age, because there was no father
image that she longed for in her home when she was growing up. The
other tendency would be to end up also with a lesbian relationship,
exactly as how she grew up in.
The next scenario, this same lesbian "married" couple adopts a boy.
The resulting tendencies could be worse. The boy is exposed to an
environment of females. As he is growing, all he sees are movements
and actions of females. The boy could end up as a male gay.
There seems to be a worse case if the union is between male gays and
adopt either a boy or a girl as their child. No matter how hard male
gays try to act as females, their nature or their order-of-nature would
still be masculine, so they couldn't really achieve the same level of
affectionate love, of motherly care, of patience in the physical care of
children, of orderliness in the home, patience in the kitchen and
laundry, etc.
There is still this disturbing consequential events from same-sex
union. From the paper "Getting the Facts: Same Sex Marriage"
published by the Family Research Council (Parents First, August
2012 issue), from that research, "for children with homosexual
parents, 3 of 6 sons reported sex with their father [we could assume
with either one of the two, as both are "fathers"], (2 of 3 sons said
they were homosexual as adults) and 2 of 11 daughters reported sex
with a step mother."
