Over the  last ten years, a number of new voices have burst on the scene of

Tamil  feminist  and women’s  literature.  The work  of  Salma,  Kutty  Revathi,

Malathi  Maitri,  Sukirtharani,  Leena  Manimekalai  and  others  has  been

received with  both  rave  reviews  and male  chauvinist  condescension.  The

present paper examines  this new body of writing,  its  larger  location within

discourses on Tamil cultural politics, the social locale of contemporary Tamil

women writers and the question of how this new writing relates to  literary

and wider cultural traditions.
