Ruabon News Letter 237 20.08.2018
Ysgol Rhiwabon
August 16th 2018
A LEVEL EXAMINATION RESULTS
Ysgol Rhiwabon is celebrating another successful set of A Level results
achieved by its Sixth Form. Ysgol Rhiwabon staff and governors are proud of
the achievements of this year’s students as they prepare for university or the
world of work. There are some excellent individual achievements which are a
testament to the incredible amount of hard work put in by the students and
teaching staff, supported by parents.
Notable areas of success this year were:
• 100% pass rate at level 3
• The majority of passes at grades A-C
• A third of the grades at A* to B
• Excellent results were achieved in all vocational subjects, where the
majority of grades were Distinction or Distinction Star level.
• 75% A-C pass rate in the new Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate
Headteacher, Mrs Ferron-Evans said,
“Yet again we are very proud of our sixth form students. This year’s grades
reflect a huge amount of hard work across a broad range of subjects from the
students and staff in the school. These results will allow our youngsters rich
opportunities to further their studies at university or to enter the world of work
as confident individuals. We wish them continued success in the future.” End of Release
We can all be proud of these achievements by ‘OUR’ Senior School and no doubt wish
all the students a GREAT future.

St Mary’S PriMary School, ruabon.
Mrs Alison Mates-Jones' Nursery Class performed a wonderful ‘Mini
Beast’ assembly which was enjoyed by the rest of the school and a
large audience of parents and friends.
All the children in Nursery Class spoke about spiders, caterpillars or
butterflies. They sang lovely Butterfly and Ladybird songs. The
ladybird song: 'Ladybug, Ladybug'
had actions and the children held
up paper ladybirds they had made.
They had also made butterflies and
spiders.
The children recited the Arabella
Miller: ‘Caterpillar’ poem and ‘Incy
Wincy Spider’. The assembly also
included an element of maths with
the children being aware of the
fact that spiders have eight legs
and butterflies can have
symmetrical patterns. Thank you to Helen Probin, Teaching Assistant, for supplying these wonderful
photos and report on behalf of St Mary’s School.

Ruabon WI – August Report
Members gathered at the Village Hall on a sunny evening and
after the business had been attended to, some time was spent
discussing future events:
1.The Ruabon Quiz team, who are finalists in the WI County
Quiz Competition, will face their adversaries in Ruthin on September
28th.
2. A Bingo Night is being planned by the Federation, more details
next month.
3. A day trip to the Anderton Boat Lift will be investigated.
4. A MacMillan Coffee Morning will be held on September 20th at
St. Michael's Close, Ruabon.
5. The Denbigh and Flint Agricultural Show will soon be held and
several of our members have been busy finalising their entries.
The speaker for the night was the well-known entertainer Lowri
Williams. Her topic was 'Wireless in Wales' and her message was to
inform us of the influence and importance of Welshman, Professor
David Edward Hughes, born about 1831, in the development of
wireless technology. His father, a bootmaker from the Bala area,
went to London, married and had 4 children, all of them musical
prodigies. They successfully toured with their singing abilities and
then the whole family emigrated to America where they continued to
tour and entertain. They were even invited to sing in the White
House. It is thought that the long journey to America had
stimulated the young David's interest in communication and by 1857
he had transposed the Morse Code into the written word - a
teleprinter. Then came his work on wireless technology, resulting in
a microphone and even a metal detector by 1881. Unfortunately
David Edward Hughes did not patent his inventions and a lot of his
work was taken up by more well-known names. There is a small
Wireless in Wales Museum in Denbigh which is said to be very
4
interesting, but opening times are limited and visitors are advised to
check first.
Lowri delivered all this with verve and vigour, getting us all to sing
appropriate songs, supported by her strong and splendid voice. It
was a lovely performance.
Lowri was thanked by Angela Frost; teas were served by Mary
Baxter and Christine Holmes; the raffle was won by Christine and
the competition for a humorous card was won by Margaret Williams.
The talk on 12thSeptember will be on Glass Painting by Suzanne Gill,
at 7 p.m. at the Village Hall. All are welcome.
Thank you to Margaret Williams for this report.

Calling all footballers! This Saturday 25th August at Penycae FC, Afoneitha Road,
LL14 2PF (13:00 – 17:00).
Email received from Shane Hughes of Keep Wales Tidy
“Just to let you know that Keep Wales Tidy
has been invited to support a campaign
sponsored by McDonalds aimed at young
footballers called “Love where you play”
http://www.mcdonalds.co.uk/ukhome/Sport/Football/LetsPlay/community-football-
days.html#close
Keep Wales Tidy as a charity is receiving money from the arrangement which will be really
helpful for funding the work our officers do in Wales including crucially supporting
community clean-up and environmental projects across Wrexham.
As Keep Wales Tidy Project Officer for Wrexham I’ve been asked to cover the
next event which is taking place this Saturday 25th August at Penycae FC,
Afoneitha Road, LL14 2PF (13:00 – 17:00). As a result of this I was
wondering if anyone would perhaps like to take part and volunteer at the event
from either 13:00 to 15:00 or from 15:00 to 17:00 😊. I will be there for the
whole event.
The main focus of the event will be to bring litter recycling to the attention of
those involved and to encourage the correct use of the bins. Some litter picking
and sorting will be required too. Previous events across Wales have been
extremely successful
All the best
Shane
