HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

2016 has been a good year for the Board of Trustees. Our members include Janet Takeha-ra, Tommy Hoshiyama, Scott Rasmussen, Jane Combs, James Newsome, Richard Fer-nandez, Tule Yomogida, Bob Kimoto and Clar-ence Kado. All of the members have worked diligently and faithfully to maintain the Church and parsonage properties. In 2017, Scott will be terming out, Janet will just do facilities us-age and insurance and Tommy will be staying on for another 3 years. We will be adding Julie Nishite and Eric Hirata as 2 new members in 2017 for a total of 9 Board Members. Since the creation of the Improvement Fund in the sum-mer of 2015, the Trustees now have a dedicat-ed funding source to do some of the repairs that had been delayed for many years due to no funding. The congregation has been very generous in contributing to this fund so that we now have over $60,000. Much of that will be retained in the fund to use in case of emergen-cies which always seem to arise. The Board has prepared an extensive 5 year plan starting in 2017 to do some major repair and mainte-nance work to include painting the buildings inside and out, repaving the parking lot, resur-facing roofs, etc. now that we have the emer-gency fund established. In the past year we

have accomplished the following items.

1. Richard Fernandez has been replacing lights, and light fixtures inside and outside the buildings, fixing electrical plugs, cleaning up graffiti from the fence and the walls, repairing the choir skirt and railing, fixing the water foun-tain in the gym, oiling locks and ball bearings in the fences and many other repairs that make the building look better. Now with the exception of the south side of the Church, we are well lit at night for the basketball program and other

nighttime activities.

2. 12 people were trained through the Trustees in First Aid, CPR and the use of the AED. Most of the trainees were renewing their 2 year certi-

fication.

3. All of the blinds in the Fellowship Hall build-

ing were either repaired or replaced.

4. A leak near the storm drain in the front park-

ing lot was dug up and repaired.

5. The Fire suppression system in the MCH

had to be repaired.

6. The backflow valve in the southwest corner of the property was leaking and had to be re-

paired.

7. The old men’s bathroom clogged drain was fixed and we are in the process of replacing the

stalls and sinks.

8. The subterranean and wood termites in the

Fireside room have been eradicated.

9. A leak in the MCH kitchen roof was repaired.

10. A temporary Church identification sign was put up on the front sanctuary wall and Richard repaired the lights highlighting the sign and the

front of the Church.

11. All the Church gutters have been cleaned.

12. George Yomogida replaced the door at the Parsonage leading from the garage to the

house.

13. The hallway and old bathrooms by the

Fellowship Hall will soon be repainted.

All of this work and future repairs have been made possible by your donations to the Im-provement Fund and the General Fund. With-out your continued generosity, we would be unable to maintain our wonderful facilities. We thank God for his continued guidance in our work and for the many volunteers who help

make it all possible.

Sincerely,

Janet Takehara¸ Board Chairman

Diabetes & Prediabetes (Jan.22) by Dr. Tom Aoki Sunday after the service around Noon) What is diabetes? Nearly 29.1 million Americans have diabetes, a serious disease in which blood glucose (blood sugar) levels are above normal. Most people with diabetes have type 2, which used to be called adult-onset diabetes. At one time, type 2 diabetes was more common in people over age 45. But now more young people, even children, have the disease because many are overweight or obese. Diabetes can lead to problems such as heart disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney disease, and nerve damage. One out of four people do not know they have diabetes. Many people do not find out they have diabetes until they are faced with problems such as blurry vision or heart trouble. That's why you need to know if you are at risk for diabe-tes. What is prediabetes? An estimated 86 million Americans over age 20 have prediabe-tes. Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they usually have "prediabetes" that means their blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be called diabetes. People with prediabetes are more likely to develop diabetes within 10 years and they are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke. (www.niddk.nih.gov)

Place: Carlton Plaza, 6915 Elk Grove Boulevard, Elk Grove, CA 95758 (next to Nugget Market) Room: Craft Room, 2nd floor (midway down the hall) Meets: December 18 Time: 12:45-1:30 p.m.

Place: ACC Care Center Dining Hall,

7801 Rush River Dr, Sacramento, CA 95831

Meets: 4th Wednesdays Time: 10:00-10:30 a.m.

Hello All, It is with mixed emotions that I let you know that I have accepted a job with the Sacramento County Assessor’s Office. My last day was December 23 and I started with the County on

December 27.

When I started in October of 2004, I was the mother of 3 young kids and very grateful to have a job that respected that I was a mother first. I was able to attend my kids’ events and share in their school life, as well as pick them

up at the end of their day.

My sons have since grown up:

My oldest Robert is attending Cal State Long Beach and will graduate with a de-gree in Business in 2017.

My middle son Lucas is at University of the Pacific in Stockton and will graduate in May, 2017

My youngest Thomas is graduating High

School in May, 2017.

I am so grateful to SJUMC for enabling me to be a mother first. I am also so grateful that during Thomas’ battle with cancer I was shown so much love and concern and was uplifted by

the many prayers that came our way!

I am also very grateful for all of you that make up the very special community of SJUMC. I have learned so much here and you will always hold a special place in my heart. My new job will be that much easier with all that I have

learned here.

I want to thank the many people who bright-ened my days at the office. And the many vol-unteers that have helped out throughout my 12 years here. The office would not run without you! On a spiritual note, I will retain my membership here and will attend on Sunday’s as always! I look forward to seeing you on Sundays! :) I look forward to this new chapter in my life and will always be grateful to the Garden Church! :)

Save the Date—Feb. 5, 2017 Lately, the topic of conversation among our seniors is focused around our common "problem"...........that we have a houseful of possessions that our children and our grand-children don't want! We are stuck, not knowing what we should or should not do. Sound familiar? Please come join the Older Adult Committee on Sunday, February 5, 2017 after church in the Fireside Room when we will kick off the new year with an informal discussion about this "problem". Grab your coffee hour good-ies and come sit with us. We'd like to know how extensive this "problem" is so we can figure out how we can deal with it in future discussions!

THANK YOU SJUMC This year we collected $1,755 to help those in need at SSIP. We were able to provide fami-lies with turkeys, chickens with your dona-tions. We used part of this money during Thanksgiving and will use some for the Christmas holiday and in the new year 2017. Your generous donation helps families and individuals who come to SSIP. The SSIP Food Closet thanks you again. SSIP Repre-sentatives, Frances Lee, Jane Combs, Shi-geko Shibata and the many volunteers from SJUMC.

The 15th Annual SJUMC Crab Feed will be held on February 11th, 2017 in the Multicul-tural Hall. This function benefits the Special Events Fund to support our Church budget. This all you can eat menu will include salad, spaghetti, nigiri, crab, ice cream and drinks. Bring a big appetite as the fresh crab is won-derful. We will also have our world famous raffle sponsored by the Basketball Program and the ever popular paper airplane contest. Adult tickets are $50.00 and children under 10 are $15.00. Tickets can be purchased after church on Sundays beginning in De-cember until the week before the crab feed. Tickets can also be purchased at the office. If you have questions, call Janet Takehara at 916.393.4586 or cell phone 916.704.4586.
