Vital Signs for SJUMC: The UMC is asking all church’s to record their vital signs as a means to define the aspects of a successful ministry and offers a real-time way to measure against it. This will benefit the church as well as our conference. A way to track major indicators of church health. SJUMC will record their vital signs based on the following: Worship attendance, total number of persons received into the church by profession of faith, offering, and total amount given to other organizations for support of benevolent and charitable ministries. Total number of persons actively engaged in small groups – small groups are groups of people who gather together on a regular basis with the goal of becoming more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, through an intentional process of learning, mutual support and accountability, and / or service to the world. At church council or all church gatherings or meetings are encourage to have: Opening prayer, Share how you felt closest to God since the last gathering, Devotion (for exam-ple, upperroom), closing prayer Total number of persons from the congregation engaged in local, national and international mis-sion/outreach. Persons sent out on behalf of the congregation for ministries intended to trans-form people in your community, your region, and the world. Shigeko Shibata has offered to tract the 2014 small groups. For Mission activity please contact the Mission Committee chairperson, Sue Teranishi. Please feel free to contact Shigeko for more information and report the number of people who attend small groups at [email protected] or 916-395-2550

Grant for Young Adult Leaders! (Spark12) Spark12 provides funding, coaching, and other support for young adult leaders and those working with young adults who have innovative ideas they believe will change the world. The deadline for applications has been extended to May 16. Spark12, supported by the United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry,

is accepting applications from teams or individuals who want to bring their ideas to life. Those selected as Spark12 fellows will receive funding, mentors with expertise in a related field, and a network of peers eager to perfect the work of the team. Spiritual formation coaches will help fellows remain grounded and oriented toward doing the most good. As a Spark12 fellow, participants will be challenged to refine their vision, learn how to express their goals, and be networked with people/organizations that might be inclined to sup-port an idea like theirs. Spark12 organizers believe the process will help participants be more successful than if they launched their ideas alone. Finalists will be interviewed in June, and those that are selected as fellows will be invited to a retreat in Nashville in August for coaching and mentoring sessions. For more infor-mation or to submit an application, visit the Spark12 website.

United Methodist Women (UMW)

SJUMC’s UMW is a “ community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experi-ence freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellow-ship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.” We started the year with the Feb-ruary 9th Call to Prayer Meeting in which we installed the new board members: Kimi Ronay and Jayne Muraki Rasmussen, Co-Presidents; Joyce Oshiro and Joanne Mikami, Co-Vice-Presidents; Shigeko Shibata, Treasurer; and Alice Kubo, Secretary. The Adult Literacy Pro-gram with the Bowling Green Chacon Academy and the McCoy Language Academy was high-lighted. Patty Honbo and Barbara Kado are spearheading the program training four new tutors and interviewing and matching prospec-tive students. Alice Kubo introduced the UMW Reading Program in which participants select books from topics ranging from Education for Mission, Leadership, Nurturing for Community, Spiritual Growth, Children and Youth. This is a great way for our unit to expand its knowledge of God’s mission. The UMW serve as tobans (a designated num-ber of women in UMW) who host fellowship, assist in memorials or special events. Toban duties are one of the important missions in support of our church and the UMC. Our mem-bers are assigned one month of the year for duties as required in addition to scheduled UMW events. This year, due to the aging of our unit, we decided we could only handle nine months of fellowship hours, so the summer months will be shared among all members of the church. Toban duties for memorial services will still be handled by UMW. We hope to grow our unit in the next few years with new mem-

bers to help us continue this vital mission of welcoming and connecting all those wishing to worship at SJUMC! Our unit also participates at the District and Conference level. Gloria Imagire is the Bridges District Communications Officer and Shigeko Shibata will be representing our unit at the UMW Assembly in Louisville, Kentucky which meets every four years. Just around the corner is UMW’s semi-annual rummage sale on May 3. This mission not only cleans our congregation’s closets and garages but also provides inexpensive clothing and household items to many of SJUMC’s neigh-bors. Any unsold items are donated to local charities. Much fellowship and teamwork makes for a fun few days of sorting, setting up, selling and cleaning up. Please consider volun-teering your time and get to know us better! UMW and the Mission Team will host Janet Lahr Lewis, the UMC California-Nevada Con-ference Missionary to Israel and Palestine on June 25th at 2 p.m. Look for details to come on this important program and plan on attend-ing and learning first-hand what is going on in the Middle East. The remainder of the year is still in the planning stage, but In addition to two more general meetings and the August field trip, we are look-ing at a one-day spiritual retreat. Details to be announced. Keep it in mind as it is sure to inspire you to action! Jayne Muraki Rasmussen, Co-President, Unit-ed Methodist Women 2014

The Walk to Emmaus a spiritual retreat

Three days that start with Thursday dinner and end on Sunday Evening can be a particu-larly special time in your life of faith. It is the Walk to Emmaus – a time to “walk’ together with other women or men (weekends are separate opportunities for women and men). As one of the ministries of the Upper Room of the United Methodist Church, Walk to Emmaus is active throughout the US and the world. During the weekend, 15 talks are given that reflect the essence of what it means to be in relationship with God in Jesus Christ. Combined with sharing together, prayer, communion times, singing and lots of laughter, each participant or “pilgrim” on the walk is blessed with time to grow spiritual-ly. The upcoming walks will take place in Woodland United Methodist Church, Ca., not very far from us. The dates are: Men’s Walk – May 29—June 1; Women’s Walk – June 5 -8. There is NO COST to you as sponsors will support your transportation and all other ex-penses. Registration deadlines are: Men – May 13, Women – May 20. The Fall Walks will take place in Fallon, Nevada in October. Those who are interested in the Emmaus Walk, please talk to any of the following peo-ple: Alice Kubo, Emi Alicaya, Loretta Ashiza-wa, Betty Hirata, Elaine Maeda, Mary Naka-mura, Jayne Rasmussen, Kimi Ronay, Shi-geko Shibata, Sue Teranishi or May Ukita if you have any questions or to get an applica-tion.

Handy People Needed! Please submit any names (such as God’s helpers, God’s handy man, etc….) of people who can do small projects around the church (such as changing bulbs, etc,!)

The following thank you letter was received in March. SJUMC volunteers Kathy Marquardt, Belle Ito and Betty Hirata have also been help-ing weekly in the library, along with several other occasional volunteers. Dear Members of the Sacramento Japanese United Methodist Church: On behalf of the Bowling Green School com-munity, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Sue Teranishi and all of the other volunteers who have given so much time and effort to repairing damaged books in our school library. The group began about a year ago with a backup of over 700 damaged books. Spending a couple hours each week, they have gradually whittled the pile down to almost nothing, despite the fact that books kept being added. The volunteers have repaired an

estimated 850 books to date! This is a task that, under the present circum-stances, would not have been done without volunteer help. It is an amazing accomplish-ment that has enabled our students to read these treasures once again. Thank you for all you do to help our school. Article from the Instant Connection - The California Nevada

Conference of the UMC News!

For over a year, Sacramento Japanese UMC (SJUMC) has been fundraising to host a Stop Hunger Now food packaging event. Stop Hunger Now has long been working to eradicate hun-ger by sending low-cost nutritious food around the world to those in need. Their meal-packaging events are volunteer-based programs that compile nutritious dehydrated meals of rice, soy, vegetables, flavoring, and 21 essential vitamins and minerals into a convenient package that can be transported conveniently. On March 23, the SJUMC community finally raised enough money to package 15,136 meals by 55 people. From restaurant fundraisers, individual do-nations, and fellowship fundraisers, the church worked hard to do all they could to help. Finding a way to be involved in hands-on mission is an ongoing theme in the church's future goals because of their Mission Committee and their vision statement of "Loving God, Serving Others, and Transforming Lives". Members from ages 5 to 95 helped to pour ingredients, carry boxes, measure food, and do what they were able to make a difference.
