“The United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to de-velop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through par-ticipation in global ministries of the church. The first UMW event of 2016 was the UMW 2016 Leadership Training held at Petaluma UMC. The current UMW Board and Gloria Imagire and Robyn Jovalis attended this informative event. Cheryl and Brandon Kim will be the featured speakers at our next general meeting, June 12, 2016. Cheryl and Brandon are ZOE International missionaries to Thailand who rescue children from slavery and other atroc-ities by providing them a better life and God’s love. They spoke at last year’s Call to Prayer Meeting and we are lucky that they have time to give us an update on their im-portant work. Due to the dedication of many volunteers, the spring Rummage Sale was once again a huge success. The rummage sale raised $6,019.52 and the Next to New Department
raised a record $1,415.25! Many thanks to all who volunteered and donated. The purposes of the UMW Reading Program are: Expand understanding and participation
in God’s mission Increase sensitivity to all human beings Encourage critical thinking about issues
facing humanity Grow in understanding Scripture Enhance self-knowledge and act from
that knowledge Strengthen involvement in the Christian
mission Reading program members read books at their own pace and share with others. Con-tact Alice Kubo if you’re interested in the Reading Program or have any questions. The UMW welcomes all women to attend and become members. Contact any of the UMW officers if you have questions or want to join! Co-presidents:: Joanne Mikami,
Joyce Oshiro Secretary: Kathy Marquardt Treasurer: Yvonne Kato

SUMMER
Staff Change! Many thanks for Eileen Boyd, our choir direc-tor and Chris Cogin, our pianist for their ser-vice! Their last day was May 15, Pentecost. SJUMC was blessed with their music! Our new Choir director is Lyssa Ogilbee. She was a music teacher at Kennedy high school before her recent retirement and she also is a good friend of Eileen, so our transition will go smoothly. We are still searching for our pia-nist.
Special Summer Wor-ship SJUMC PASSPORT TRAVELING THROUGH THE BIBLE Have you wonder if you know basic things many Christians are supposed to know? Come and join us this summer! We will go over the bible stories that most of people grew up with! We will have different programs and projects throught the summer, related to our vision, loving God, serving others, transforming our Lives. We are still looking for volunteers who are willing to share their talents.

Western Jurisdictional United Methodist Wom-en (UMW) Quadrennial Meeting was held in Salt Lake City on April 22-24, 2016. 48 UMW attended this meeting from the CANV Confer-ence. What a blessing to attend this event, meet other UMW and to share what I learned. The Western Jurisdiction of the UMW Church encompasses the westernmost regional confer-ences of the United States: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, The Pacific Islands, Guam, Saipan. California/Nevada Conference—Bishop Warner
Brown Alaska, Pacific Northwest, Oregon/Idaho Con-
ference—Bishop Grant Hagiya California/Pacific Conference—Bishop Minerva
Carcano Desert Southwest Conference—Bishop Robert
Hoshibata Yellowstone & Rocky Mountain Conference—
Bishop Elaine Stanovsky The purpose of this meeting was to expand concepts of mission through participation in the
global ministries of the church such as develop-ing a plan for starting new churches. They also elected 2 people to represent the Western Jurisdictional (Stell Wallace from Pacific North-west Conference and Susan Williams from Alaska UMC Conference). During the election we were in Bible Classes which were one of the more exciting events. During free time you could attend workshops: I attended the Acting for Justice Immigration and Praying and Beading. There were other clas-ses such as: Be Just, Be Green Living it Out, Crossroads Urban Center turns 50, Freeing the Captives (human trafficking), Keeping, Organ Music Alive, Maternal and Child Health Today. Restoring the Sacred Circle – Indigenous Americans, United for a Fair Economy, Laby-rinth Meditation, Ubuntu Event – UMCOR. It was a wonderful event. If you would like more information please ask me and I will share more information. Thank you for letting me represent SJUMC at the Western Jurisdic-tional Meeting.

Pray for Nepal Earthquake Survivors
Global Ministries Missionary Katherine Par-ker who serves as part of the health team of the United Mission to Nepal, offers specific prayers for the people of Nepal following the devastating April 25 earthquake.
There is anxiety that this event will trigger another quake on one of Nepal’s other two fault lines and that more aftershocks will further destabi-lize buildings. Please pry Psalm 46 for the assurance of God’s continued presence and protection.
Please pray for those who have lost loved ones and those who have lost their shelter either temporarily or per-manently. Please pray for those sleep-ing outside that the weather will hold stable and it won’t rain.
Water shortages are always a problem in Kathmandu, so please pray that the water supply will be sufficient and un-contaminated. Please pray that the temporary outdoor living will not lead to cholera outbreak.
Please pray for our response team traveling to Kathmandu and for UMN staff as we implement our emergency response plan to help those in need.
Please pray for calm and release from fear as the aftershocks continue.
Thanks to the many people
who made this Sale a success!
