    Undergraduate scholarships

    The Melbourne Scholarships Program is one of themost generous and comprehensive scholarshipprograms in Australia. It recognises the outstandingacademic achievement of students from Victoria,

    Australia and around the world.

    The University of Melbourne is also committed toproviding access to higher education to students whomight otherwise be excluded by socioeconomic,cultural, geographic and other disadvantages, andwe offer a range of opportunities for those applicants.

    Students with an ATAR below 99.90 may beconsidered if places are available.

    Students must apply for the relevant coursethrough VTAC.

    No separate scholarship application is required.

    Q Excludes the Master of Music Therapy, Master of Psychology and Master of Genetic Counselling. Students must meet course prerequisites, however no minimum grade point average is required to receive the guarantee.

    Chancellors Scholars Program

    In 2012, the University of Melbourne is introducing six new versions of our NewGeneration degrees for very high-achieving students. Chancellors Scholars will receivea range of benefits and will be guaranteed a place in the graduate program of theirchoice Q . This guarantee includes the Universitys flagship degrees such as the Doctor ofMedicine, Juris Doctor (Law), Doctor of Dental Surgery, Doctor of Optometry, Doctor of

    Veterinary Medicine and the Master of Architecture.

    Under-represented schools.

    Have attended school and resided within

    a 250km radius of the Mildura GPO for atleast 12 months preceding the date of theirapplication

    Require assistance with the expenseof moving to Melbourne and with livingexpenses and/or tuition fees during theircourse.

    students The following scholarships are available to internationalstudents commencing at the University of Melbournein 2012. You are an international student if you arenot a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, and are notan Australian permanent resident (or a holder of an

    Coming from Darwin, Collegeimmediately provided me with avibrant and supportive communityand a place I can call home inMelbourne. At College, there isalways a friend to talk to, somethingto celebrate, a game to play, sport towatch and something to eat!

    Assistance from scholarships andbursaries has helped me to stay inCollege for the length of my degree.

    The Brumby Project was funded by a Dreamlarge Student Grant. It was a joint partnershipwith Melbourne veterinary students and the Kalandan Foundation, which assists in thereduction of the wild brumby population in the Snowy Mountains, as well as givingdisadvantaged youths an opportunity to work with horses in their Brumby Camp Program.

    Residentialscholarships

    The Universitys residentialcolleges collectively offerup to $3.5 million in financialassistance, scholarshipsand bursaries to studentseach year.

    The Universitys 11 undergraduatecolleges offer outstanding support forstudents. In 2012, financial support fromthe colleges will assist over 600undergraduate students to experiencelife as part of a collegiate community.

    As well as scholarships for academicexcellence, many scholarshipsspecifically assist students from a rangeof diverse backgrounds, includingregional and rural students, internationalstudents, Indigenous students, refugeesand students who are the first in theirfamily to attend university. Somescholarships are also awarded on thebasis of course, community involvement,leadership potential, and abilities inmusic and sport.

    Many colleges also provide financialsupport in the form of bursaries tostudents whose financial situation mayprevent them from being able to live atcollege, and some colleges employstudents to provide additionalassistance.

    Scholarship and bursary support usuallyincludes a reduction in fees, ranging fromaround 5 per cent to 100 per centremission of fees. Colleges often requirean application for scholarships orassistance.

    The University also offers a range of other grants, prizes, awards and bursaries to ourstudents. Grants are available to undertake volunteering or leadership activities,awards and prizes are available for outstanding academic achievement, andbursaries are available for a variety of needs.

    Travelling scholarships

    Travelling scholarships are available to assist studentsenrolled at the University to undertake part of their studiesoverseas. The following scholarships are available toboth domestic and international students in 2012 (unlessotherwise specified).

    Benefits Eligibility Applications

    Melbourne Global Grants Up to $2500 for overseas study of more

    than 12 weeks approved for credit toyour degree.

    Up to $1000 for overseas study of lessthan 12 weeks approved for credit to

    your degree.

    Number available: Over 1000.

    To be considered, undergraduate students,including honours students, must:

    Have an overall weighted average of at least 65%

    Have completed, or be about to complete,at least 75 points and at least one year ofstudy at the University of Melbourne at thetime of application

    Not have received a Global Mobility Grant, Award or Scholarship in a previous round.

    Students must:

    Submit an appropriate application formby the relevant deadline

    Be approved to go on exchange, study

    abroad or to undertake study or workoverseas by their faculty(s).

    Amanda went on exchange to theUniversity of Toronto, Canada.

    I loved the opportunity to live inone of the oldest colleges at theUniversity of Toronto. The view out mywindow, looking across the Universitywith the city in the background, wasbreathtaking!

    Spending a week in Toronto beforeclasses began allowed me to fall inlove with the city, orientate myselfand meet many other internationalstudents.

    Benefits Eligibility Applications

    Melbourne Global Scholarships in Language Study $500 up to $7000 (depending on length

    of program) to undertake languagestudy overseas.

    Number available: Up to 60.

    Students must:

    Have completed a full year of language

    study at tertiary level in the language theyintend to study overseas

    Be enrolled in studies in their targetlanguage

    Have achieved an H2B (70%+) average inthe target language

    Be receiving credit towards their Universityof Melbourne degree for their overseaslanguage studies.

    Offered by the School of Languages andLinguistics to students studying a languageoverseas.

    Students must apply directly to the School ofLanguages and Linguistics.

    Closing dates: 31 March: For travel on or after 1 May

    and before 1 November

    31 August: For travel on or after 1November and before 1 May in thefollowing year.

    OS-HELP LoansThe Department of Education, Employmentand Workplace Relations (DEEWR) providesOS-HELP Loans to assist undergraduate

    Australian students in under taking some oftheir study overseas.

    Funding amount is indexed each year (up to$5600 in 2011).

    Australian cit izens or holders of a permanenthumanitarian visa who are enrolled in aCommonwealth Supported Place in anundergraduate degree are eligible to apply foran OS-HELP Loan to undertake study outside

    Australia with an approved overseas highereducation institution as part of exchange orstudy abroad.

    Students must submit an application for anOS-HELP Loan to Melbourne Scholarshipssix weeks before overseas studycommences.
