Posebno se radujemo saradnji koju će zajedničkim koncertom započeti Manhattan String Quartet i vrhunski bh. muzičari, naše kolege Nihad Krečo, Sakib Lačević i Vedran Tuce.

Dear audience, We are proud that we have spent the previous Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival seasons in creating some extraordinary music and in the atmosphere of community between performers and the audience, which has confirmed modern theories about every artistic endeavor being an indivisible organism made by the artist, the work and the audience. This reflection on artistic activity particularly addresses the awareness of the context in which art is created and the need to react to the circumstances of that context. The 2013 Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival’s visual identity, created by Bosnia’s own Ideology Creative Team, consciously reflects our position that we can not ignore the fact that tomorrow we will play works by Mozart, Brahms and other great masters of art, in a country in which museums are being closed due to the lack of funding, in which the most valuable works of art that have been given to us by some of the most acclaimed artists of the world still do not have a home, where there are not enough active composers, in which culture is being funded more according to personal and political interests, than the interests of quality, long-term relevance and expertise, and in which, for all the above, no one appears to bear any responsibility. Although unusual for a festival of chamber music, SCMF has decided that its mission will be to celebrate the pleasure of pure consciousness, therefore the mission of raising public awareness, and not the expected beautifying of our “gray” reality. This year, the Academy of Music, along with the artists and the audiences, will use the festival programs and campaign for an educational project of promoting the message that art, such as the art brought to us by Mozart and Brahms who are in the SCMF 2013 focus, is not a parasitic and peripheral social activity that needs charity, nor is it a form of entertainment that is supposed to temporarily divert attention from the reality by celebrating superficial beauty.

Quite the opposite, art is valuable as the most noble form of objectification of the human spirit, it is the space in which the human arises furthest from its simple biological form of existence, it is the brightest product of the spirit of humanity, which reaches its maximum heights in music. SCMF here sends a clear message that we understand our context, and that we will protest whenever it has adverse effects on art and society, that we will not succumb under “pleasant and adaptable” actions and disregard the substance of what we do - great art by masters of music whose creation has ennobled and changed humanity. In this way, the Academy of Music consciously continues its artistic and educational activities in communication with the widest audiences, and as a gift to the citizens and guests of Sarajevo, offers these foremost world events free of charge. We most cordially thank Chris Finckel and Dino Mulić who have created the conditions in the United States for making and continuing this festival. We thank Manhattan String Quartet and Christopher Taylor for their return, Cihat Aşkin for our lasting friendship, we thank Stanley Drucker and Lech Antonio Uszynski for their first concerts in Sarajevo. We are especially looking forward to a new cooperation, which will be launched by the joint concert of the Manhattan String Quartet and acclaimed Bosnian musicians, our colleagues Nihad Krečo, Sakib Lačević and Vedran Tuce. We thank the participants of the SCMI who made Sarajevo the best summer music classroom in our region. Special thanks to the the Open Society Fund and the Oswald Family Foundation for their faith in us, and all the other patrons, sponsors and friends who have helped the realization of the festival, in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the United States. Finally, all praise goes to our young student festival team whose great dedication and professionalism throughout this festival makes them the ideal fighters for their musical tomorrow. Welcome to the beginning of the third Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival!

U predstojećim danima nastavljamo slaviti umjetnost velikih kompozitora: u svojoj trećoj sezoni SCMF u fokusu ima život i djelo Wolfganga Amadeusa Mozarta i Johannesa Brahmsa.

Dear friends, it is our pleasure to present to you the 2013 Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival and Institute. We invite you to join us for 10 days of great music and we look forward to sharing this thrilling season with you! We are continuing our contribution of the celebration of the greatest composers. For its third edition, the Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival & Institute celebrates the works and lives of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johannes Brahms. We look forward to sharing their timeless and expressive works of art with you. Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival and Institute has now reached 3 successful years. We are very proud of what we have accomplished so far, and look forward to the many great challenges and programs to come in our continual pursuit of excellence! With great success comes great responsibility. We understand that Bosnia and Herzegovina is in a cultural crisis. The arts are characterized as “dying” or “ill”. For us, it is important that the SCMF is not politically neutral but rather to stay very active in the role of promoting the benefits of classical music and arts in general. Having that in mind, we have decided to send a clear message and join the protest for the prosperity of arts and artists in Bosnian-Herzegovinian society. Behind our success are many great people who do their work extremely well. We are

honored to continue our collaboration with the Academy of Music in Sarajevo and its dean Dr. Ivan Čavlović. Our team is made of young, talented and energetic people who live for music with phenomenal Amila Ramović as head of the team. All this has been made possible thanks to our many donors from around the world. Thank you all for your support and for your love of the Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival and Institute. This will doubtless be a great and memorable adventure and we are happy to share it with everyone!

DAH MOZARTA I BRAHMSA MEĐU NAMA

Zanimljivo i lako objašnjivo! I jeste savršeno!

BREATH OF MOZART AND BRAHMS AMONG US

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johannes Brahms are the featured composers at this year’s Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival. Where could the story of these two geniuses, each of them grand in his own way, be told in a more magnificent way than at a chamber music festival? They lived in two different centuries, but in the same cultural environment, that of Vienna: Mozart, in the second half of the eighteenth century, and Brahms, in the second half of the nineteenth century. Both of them carried the styles of their time. Mozart, whom musicians and critics call “Jesus” of his art, (referring to his early death and his messianic grandeur), has created a unique opus that will live forever, in the way the that all great human ideas and discoveries of spirit do. Mozart is one of the most important people and indeed one of the most important musicians who have graced this earth, standing next to Bach and Beethoven. But where does his greatness come from? It comes from the spirit of the beauty that he left to humanity, a beauty with carefree lightness, but all human depth, unstoppably flying from continent to continent, from century to century, in perpetuity, immune to hesitation and obstacle. The greatness can be found in the pride of the human spirit, versed to the awareness of the essence of the human and artistic being. Mozart created by playing with notes, as easily as breathing air or drinking water. The beauty he created, unbounded and untouched before him, will remain unique, as unique as the eternal beauty of the human spirit. Mozart was creating to make the world a more beautiful place!

On the trail of Mozart’s genius, almost a genius of the same magnitude, Johannes Brahms was creating his own art. Brahms, a somewhat grumpy Viennese man with a serious North German mentality, was on the same path of great artistic achievements of his predecessors and then broke new ground. Vienna was not ready to accept Bruckner, R. Strauss, or Mahler at the time, but it did accept Brahms. This can be easily explained. Brahms’ music followed the path of purity of Mozart’s melodic thought and showed his understanding of the music of Mozart, music that is thought of as an irreplaceable product of the human spirit, and only its most beautiful creations need to be presented to audiences and people of artistic spirit. That premise was important to Brahms, especially when he was dissatisfied with his contemporaries and the new stylistic trends, even predicting the end of music as such! Fortunately, he was wrong! But the idea tells us much about Brahms as a composer. By struggling hard to reach great musical ideas and by slowly forming great melodies and grandiose movements from the smallest musical cells, Brahms gave the world what he thought was perfect. And well it was! Listen to any of his creations, and it is clear how thoughtfully and carefully he worked when making choices and shaping his tonal material. Mozart and Brahms vary significantly in the way they reflect the struggle of creation, but they are very close in the beauty they have given the world. Each of their works at this year’s Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival reflects this beauty. The very first concert (August 28), features two major string quintets (string quartet plus viola). The Brahms String Quintet in G Major, Op. 111, develops the ideas of its initial material beyond recognition in contrasting ideas of differing

Pored Haydna i Bartóka (29. Novi repertoar Mozartovih i Brahmsovih djela, tri čuvene sonate i Scherzo, bit će u izvedbi violiniste Cihata Aşkina i pijaniste Christophera Taylora, dvojice umjetnika s dva kraja svijeta, ali ujedinjenih u otkrivanju tajni muzike Mozarta i Brahmsa (1. IX).

Pored navedenih djela Mozarta i Brahmsa ovogodišnji SCMF bit će mjesto izvedbe još nekoliko kapitalnih djela kamerne muzičke literature: Gudački kvartet br. 5 Bele Bartóka (29. I opet poseban koncert (3. S ovom konstatacijom budimo spremni dočekati treće izdanje našeg festivala i preslušavajući izabrana djela pružiti duši priliku da udahne tragove vječite božanske ljepote.

melodic flow. This is seen in the first movement, which is in sonata-form, the melancholic second movement, the scherzo-like third movement and the reflective fourth movement. The Mozart String Quintet in C Major, K. 515, shows a high degree of precision in expressing classically conceived melodic ideas and a dialogue between the instruments. The concert on August 29 will showcase the Brahms String Quartet in A Minor, where Brahms goes into new depths of his musical genius in search of the best solutions in the formation of tonal harmonies. Haydn and Bartók will also be performed on that concert. A special concert on August 31 is to be mentioned, with two Mozart pieces on the program: The Flute Quartet in D Major, K. 285, for flute, violin, viola and cello and the String Quartet in E flat Major, K. 428, along with the Brahms Clarinet Trio, Op. 114. This concert will feature three artists from Bosnia and Herzegovina: Nihad Krečo, piano, Sakib Lačević, flute, Vedran Tuce, clarinet, in collaboration with the Manhattan String Quartet. This will certainly be a unique performance by our resident ensemble of the Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival and professors of the Sarajevo Music Academy. On September 1 Turkish violinist Cihat Așkin and American pianist Christopher Taylor will perform a recital of Mozart and Brahms Sonatas. These two artists, from two ends of the world, will unite in unraveling the secrets of the music of Mozart and Brahms. The final concert on September 4 will be dedicated to Brahms alone: the Clarinet Quintet, Op. 115 and the Piano Quartet, Op. 25. These works will be performed by the Manhattan String Quartet and two renowned American guest artists, Stanley Drucker, clarinet and Christopher Taylor, piano. The high romanticism of Brahms and the unique communicative abilities of these artists will surely result in a concert not to be missed.

In addition to these works of Mozart and Brahms, there will be performances of several seminal works of the chamber music repertoire. The Manhattan String Quartet will perform Bela Bartók’s String Quartet No. 5. This is a piece of highly sophisticated character and meaning. Christopher Taylor will perform Oliver Messiaen’s Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jesus for solo piano. This work is an extensive musical and philosophical celebration of the life and events of the infant Jesus. Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for String Quartet and Three Pieces for Clarinet will be performed as well, two small form classics of the 20th century. On September 3, another important concert will take place. Our own Bosnian pianist and co-director of the Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival Dino Mulić will give a recital in which he will perform the Haydn Sonata in G Major, the Bach English Suite in A Minor, Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata No. 1 and Variations on a Theme of Corelli by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Each of these works are genuine representatives of their creators and a challenge for our highly sophisticated performers, but they also bring the true meaning of art in music. The composers and performers are ideally paired at our festival, which, without any doubt will be of unsurpassed quality and unique in our region. With this statement, we can be ready to welcome the third season of the Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival and by listening to the chosen works, give our souls a breath of air of these transcendental moments of divine beauty.

Hailed by the Boston Globe as “a national treasure,” The Manhattan String Quartet is acclaimed as one of America’s leading ensembles. Founded in 1970 at the Manhattan School of Music the Quartet has gone on to tour the world, appearing in such distinguished halls as the Rudolphinum in Prague, Salle Cortot in Paris and New York’s Town Hall. Well known for their pioneering interpretations of Shostakovich’s 15 Quartets, the Manhattans have presented this cycle for, among others, Great Performers at Lincoln Center, French National Radio, in single day marathons in Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan, and Festival in 2011. Dedicating much of their time as educators, the group has been Quartet-in-Residence at Colgate and produces string quartet workshops at home and around the world. In 2001 the Quartet introduced their ‘cultural expedition’ series, bringing American string players to the musical capitals of Europe to study a single string quartet in the city of its composition. These annual seminars have focused on the works of Bartók, Beethoven, Debussy, Dvořák, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Ravel, Smetana, Schubert and Verdi and introduced hundreds to their cultural contexts. The Manhattan Quartet has participated in numerous summer festivals and is proud to be the core ensemble of the Sarajevo Chamber Music Festival and Institute.

He uses all known new and modern techniques of playing the clarinet and bass clarinet, and constantly explores new possibilities of sound. He is currently working as a professor of clarinet and chamber music at the Music Academy in Sarajevo, and since 2008 he is the Head of the Wind Instruments Department.

O motivima za formiranje Sarajevo Chamber Music InstituteMotivation and Goals of the Sarajevo Chamber Music Institute

The Sarajevo Chamber Music Institute is dedicated to the belief that when people make music together, wonderful things can happen, lives can change, misconceptions can disappear, bridges can be built, bonds can form. We have devoted our lives to this principle, and to make it happen here we expect nothing but all of your effort, energy, intellect, and passion. Is that too much to ask? The music, the idea, the principle deserves nothing less.

We are very excited to be working with such a talented and diverse group of students, to share with you our love of chamber music, and to work with you on this great repertoire. It is our hope that with our hard work together we may learn of a week filled with beauty and harmony, learning from each other how to more convincingly speak the universal language of music.

This is what we do, it is who we all want to become, so let’s get started on this leg of our journey. Welcome, and let’s get to work!
