Seamer Tooling Innovators

We are the market leaders in non-OEM seamer tooling and lead the world in Seamer Tooling Innovation/Development. Throughout our existence, we have introduced many new features such as special non corrosive materials, high quality coatings, ceramic

bearings and specialized seals all originating from the Seamer Tooling business here in Shipley.

We have to supply better tooling than the OEM’s fit on their machines.

Over the years, we have proven that our tooling is capable of producing far more seamed cans than our competitors. Also due to the quality of our products the customers benefit from improved seam quality, reduced maintenance, reduced lubrication frequency, reduced lubrication quantities, less seam adjustment interventions and longer life

tooling.

Seamer Tooling Innovators

We manufacture approximately 10,000 items of tooling per year even though as a company we do not manufacture seamers anymore.

We are at the forefront of tooling improvements and in conjunction with our R&D facilities here in Shipley, Crowns Wantage site in Oxford and with the help of our fantastic

customers we are able to launch new developments to the world of seaming when they are proven to offer benefits over existing products.

As a guide our tooling is capable of closing 60 million + cans in the beverage market and 25 million + cans in the food market.

Why Are CMBE Better?Materials:

Stoody® – Introduced to the seaming process by CMBE. It’s an alloy made up of 50% Cobalt, 25% Chrome, 12% Tungsten plus a few others.

• Totally corrosion free• Hardness of approx. 52 Rockwell C• Rolls are spun cast – molten alloy poured into a horizontal rotating mould which

ensures lighter debris is flung to the outside and the heavier debris to the middle, this is removed during machining resulting in a near perfect casting structure.

• Chucks are ‘hipped’ – powder metallurgy method creating the area of the chuck lip in Stoody® with a perfect grain structure but the body in stabilised stainless steel. None of our competitors use this technology.

• Resistant to acidity of products and caustics

CMBE Innovation

Major success – Revolutionised the seaming industry – e.g. chucks last 4 times longer than 440C – competition followed.

Why Are CMBE Better?Coatings:CMBE Innovation

• Developed specifically to prevent metal pick up during the seam formation which was a major issue.

• Lines had to be stopped to polish roll profiles• Applied by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) which changes the surface of the

material to a Titanium Carbide (TiC) – grey colour, or a Titanium Nitride (TiN) – gold colour.

• Method performed at 1000ºC in a vacuum retort for a period of around 6 hours in the case of TiC coating.

• A chemical reaction takes place on the surface and the coating sinks into the substrate changing the surface of the Stoody to either TiC or TiN.

• Different to common method of spraying coating on top of surface.• Thickness of coating between 3 and 5 microns. • Extremely hard at approx. 3500 Vickers for TiC or approx. 2500 Vickers for

Titanium Nitride for TiN.

Why Are CMBE Better?Coatings Continued:

• Vital to the success of our tooling and is why we need to use such specialised materials that remain hard and completely corrosion free even after been subjected to 1000ºC temperatures.

• Refined textured coatings – LW5 (old) – TTA/TTC. Surface is prepared, coat on top. As per hipped chucks no competition use TTA/TTC, they still use some form of LW5.

• Resistant to acidity of products and caustics

CMBE Innovation

Major success – Extended the life of chucks and rolls due to immense hardness – improved production as TTA/TTC combat ‘Skidders’ – competition

followed.

Why Are CMBE Better?

Stoody® Cobalt Chrome seaming rolls proved they were far superior to traditional 440C Chrome Cobalt Steel and were lasting twice as long as the Timken Taper Roller bearings

that were fitted in them.

Customers were having to replace bearings during the life of the roll – which hadn’t previously been the case.

Progression:

CVD (Titanium Nitride TiN or Titanium Carbide TiC) coating system increased the life potential of our seaming rolls tenfold.

Bearing life became a critical issue.

“Innovation not Recreation”

Why Are CMBE Better?Ceramic Bearings:

Discussed with our bearing supplier an alternative to Timken Taper Roller bearings, said company manufactures bearings for the Aerospace and Defence Industries. It was agreed that bearing development using Ceramic materials needed to be investigated.

CMBE Innovation

A close relationship between the companies exists and the result is the bearing technology that we now supply.

“Innovation not Recreation”

Why Are CMBE Better?Benefits of our Ceramic Bearings:

• Extremely free rotating bearing• Minimum drag• Reduces/eliminates lacquer removal and metal pick up in the roll grooves

during seaming process.• Angular contact bearing that is manufactured with Stainless Steel Raceways and

Ceramic Balls (Silica Nitride) enclosed in a Plastic Composite cage• Corrosion free

• Bearing Progression• Developed two single bearings into a cartridge bearing system which we

now use• Cartridge bearing that is automatically pre-loaded when the roll is fitted into

the roll pin

“Innovation not Recreation”

Why Are CMBE Better?Benefits of our Ceramic Bearings:CMBE Innovation

• Insulation properties of Ceramic balls mean less heat generated from the seaming head to roll arm to roll pin

• Seaming roll assembly runs much cooler reducing dimensional drift of the double seam from a cold start to production temperature.

• Life of the Ceramic is more than equal to the roll life, especially if our CVD coating technology is used.

• Resistant to acidity of products and caustics

Why Are CMBE Better?

CMBE Innovation

All Steel Tapered Roller - short life despite frequent greasing.

Single row Ceramic - long life with vastly reduced grease interval.

Cartridge Ceramic – even longer life and reduced grease interval.

Benefits of our Ceramic Bearings:

Major success – Bearing life drastically improved – Double seam performance improved meaning less human intervention – competition followed.

“Innovation not Recreation”

Why Are CMBE Better?Specialised Seals:

We decided an improvement was needed to further improve the Seamer Tooling Technology on offer. Looked at ‘off the shelf’ seals but none were suitable. CMBE contacted many different seal suppliers and created a ‘specialised’ low friction labyrinth seal named “Eco-Seal”. This seal still allows the excellent rotational qualities of the ceramic bearing to be exploited in full whilst remaining anti-corrosive.

CMBE Innovation

“Innovation not Recreation”

Why Are CMBE Better?Eco Seal Results:CMBE Innovation

Tooling life and performance is far superior to any other seamer tooling manufactured worldwide

Prevents lubricant escape and protects roll

bearing from product/water

ingress.

Less lubrication in rolls results in less grease ‘fling out’ meaning less

contamination risk.

Ceramic bearing using Eco Seal Seaming roll only

requires lubricating every 72 hours not

every 4 hours (Timken) resulting in more production

time.

“Innovation not Recreation”

Why Are CMBE Better?Eco Seal Example:

On an Angelus 60L (6 head seamer) running at 600 cans per minute, assuming that with Timken Taper bearings the seamer is stopped for 10 minutes every 4 hours (240 minutes) to lubricate the rolls. (Non-stop production – not 100% realistic due to product/can changeover’s, down days or efficiencies).

CMBE Innovation

1. Machine down for 10 minutes in 4 hours (240 minutes)2. Machine down for 60 minutes in 24 hours (1440 minutes)3. 60 minutes = 1 hour4. 600 cans per minute x 60 minutes = 36000 cans extra per day!5. 36000 cans per day x 7 days = 252,000 cans extra per week!6. 252,000 cans per week x 4 weeks = 1,008,000 cans extra per month!7. 1,008,000 cans per month x 12 months = 12,096,000 cans extra per year!

“Innovation not Recreation”

Why Are CMBE Better?Specialised Seals:

“Eco Seal” improved grease lubricated seaming rolls superbly well but didn’t give the results we had hoped for on oil lubricated seamers. Further development was needed to improve our seamer tooling on oil lubricated seamers. Again, ‘off the shelf’ seals but none were suitable. Working in close partnership with our seal suppliers CMBE created a ‘specialised’ low friction lip seal named “Evo Seal”. Similar to “Eco Seal”, this seal still allows the excellent rotational qualities of the ceramic bearing to be exploited in full whilst remaining anti-corrosive.

CMBE Innovation

Major success – Less oil fly – Less product/water ingress – Seaming rolls exceeding guaranteed life – cost saving through performance

Page 26: Seamer Tooling Company Presentation

“Innovation not Recreation”

Why Are CMBE Better?Specialised Seals Continual Improvement:

In recent years, emphasis was placed on seamer hygiene. CMBE decided to take our seal technology one step further to specifically prevent contamination from oil spill out of our seaming rolls. “Ultraseal” compliments “Eco Seal” and “Evo Seal” and sits inside the cartridge bearing assembly without increasing the frictional resistance of the seaming roll. In addition the seal also prevents contaminate ingress into the bearing.

CMBE Innovation

Oil Lubrication - Customers comment on how much cleaner their seamers are using Ultraseal due to no oil escaping CMBE seaming rolls.

Grease Lubrication – Even less ‘grease fly’. In some instances re-lubrication is carried out every 6 months. Approximate greasing savings of £1500 per 250

million components seamed.

Savings in maintenance are immense!
