Peter Ammann, Dr. phil. Ruth Ammann, dipl. arch. Two Ways—One Goal Peter Amman and his sister Ruth Ammann (Training Analyst and Supervisor at the C.G. Jung Institute Zürich) chat about the differences and similarities in their Jungian approaches to analysis.

In these casual talks each semester, ISAP analysts offer glimpses into their personal approaches to Jungian analysis. (For ISAP students, not credited for training.)

The castle-like clubhouse, a stately neo-Gothic villa, was once referred to as a place where the holy fire, le feu sacré, burns. The Club was founded in 1916, and was a forum for Carl Jung’s ideas. Besides a guided tour of the premises, e.g. the unique library, we will hear a lecture by Ursula Kiraly-Müller about the foundation and development of the club, with special emphasis on the club as Jung's research field and "Human Experiment", where he could test his discoveries and theories on himself and the club members. The club was therefore also a "group process", often involving delicate challenges. It was far from certain that this experiment would succeed.

06 07 Lecture Maria Anna Bernasconi, lic. phil. Wednesday 27.02. 19:00-20:45

=== Basic Jung === Showing the Divine: Materialisation and Spiritualisation in Various Religions Many religions symbolize the divine through sacred images. They also invoke divine presence with sound, music, scent and ritual movement. There is a danger, however, that the material manifestations of the divine are taken as the Ultimate itself. Jungian psychology maintains a clear distinction between archetypal image and archetype per se. Examples will be given to show how this may be applied to various religious traditions.

Small Trickster, Heroes and Primadonnas? The Archetypical Core of Development A common Jungian view focuses on the biological foundation of archetypes. Complementary to this view I will argue that the development of the child’s psyche also depends on archetypal constellations. These correspond to the actual individual disposition and needs of the child. ISAP Students

Soul Music: The Song That Remembers the Soul In the wake of the death of "the Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin we can take a look at what it is in soul music that so well expresses and attends to the longings of soul, allowing yet bringing some release and satisfaction to the restless soul in turbulent times, in the turmoil, torment and strife experienced within and without.

The Blank Mother Jung’s essay on the Mother Archetype is juxtaposed with the theory developed in the book The Dead Mother from French psychoanalyst Andre Green. Both Jung and Green describe attachment situations where the psyche becomes narrowed and fragmented, affecting experiences of self and other, connection and individuation. The presentation illustrates some of the emotionally complex and internally deadening space that can transfer from a mother to her child. See also 11 45 CH-course No. 1

11 45 Lecture Susan Schwartz, PhD Thursday 11.04. 13:00-14:45 Other areas of interest: 01 and 12

The Father Absent to His Daughter Jung coined the term father complex and described it as feeling toned and shaped by the experiences with the personal father. When too powerful, one disappears into the complex. The “father imago” that lives within leaves no space to attach, just a gap and emptiness. A daughter with an absent father learns to be inhibited, with her emotional development arrested, and adulthood feigned rather than realized, without a sense of identity or authority. With clinical examples and dreams. See also 11 43

In the Service of the Self How do we respond to what emerges from the unconscious? How do we discern nudges from the Self? What are the implications of following a leading of the Self, and what do we risk if we do not? How do we overcome our doubts, fears, and anxiety? What resources and energies might we count on to help us along the way? Students are asked to contribute CHF 15 for art supplies. 12 ISAP Students

=== Interlude === Encountering the Simpleton: An Initiation for Our Time The Simpleton is the hero of many fairy tales. He also appears in classical literature and has become since a few decades a recurrent figure in cinema. It is as if the theme were particularly constellated for our time. The first part of the seminar will present archetypal patterns characteristic of simpleton stories. In the second part students will be invited to do an active imagination aiming at internalizing the different figures involved in a simpleton story and giving it a meaning in their individual psyche.

=== Interlude === Alchemical Process of Depression Jung`s fascination with alchemical symbolism and the unconscious provides us with the tools to understand our own psychological processes. A path is opened to transform the dark night of soul into a meaningful, enlightening experience. In order to accomplish this, the ego must undergo its own death and rebirth.

Frühling 2019 Spring 41

“How does analysis effect change? The answer, it seems to me, lies in an ever deeper appreciation of

the infinity of the symbolic experience. … (M)ovement into an archetypal level of consciousness is the

logical outcome of a process that relies on the symbolic dimension of human existence. … (T)he

process of change in analysis is always oriented to the transcendent nature of the symbolic.”

George B. Hogenson, “From moments of meeting to archetypal consciousness: emergence and the

fractal structure of analytic practice”, (p. 311) in Who Owns Jung? Ed. Ann Casement 2007, Karnac

Books Ltd., London.
